Press Release from New Smyrna Speedway for reminder year including the Governor Cup

Press Release, Oct 18, 2022
New Smyrna Speedway
Due to extensive damage caused by Hurricane Ian, New Smyrna Speedway is suspending all events for the rest of 2022. Robert Hart (Pres) is quoted “I do not want to rush this, I want it done right!”
Damages to the racing surface, buildings, equipment, and signage have prompted this decision.
“It breaks my heart to not run the FL Gov. Cup!” quoted Jane Hart (owner) and president of the Heart to Hart Breast Cancer Foundation. “We had to cancel the Hart to Heart Breast Cancer Foundation Sunbelt David Rogers Super Late Model Series race and now this!” The Hart to Heart race is the premiere event to help raise money to support local Women and Men suffering from breast cancer.
This year would have been the 57th running of the prestigious FL Gov. Cup with names like Handshaw, Cagle, Allison, Tissot, Conners, Crowe, Brack, Anderson, Balough, Murray, Tuning, Porter, Cook, Orr, Russell, Rogers, Kittleson, Choquette, Colangelo and others gracing the coveted trophy. The event is one of the milestones for stock car racing.
Repairs to the facility are underway with more being scheduled at the time of this writing.
New Smyrna Speedway will return to racing in January of 2023 with the “Red Eye 50/50”.
While we wish that we could continue racing this year, circumstances will not allow. All pre entries to the 57th annual FL Gov Cup will be refunded promptly.
We apologize for any inconvenience and we appreciate your understanding and support. More detail will be posted as we continue to make New Smyrna Speedway the leader of stock car racing!
We want to thank our Sponsors, racers, fans and staff for their dedication and determination to get this great facility back into shape.
We look forward to seeing you at YOUR NASCAR home track Saturday January 7, 2023.

Due to Damage From Hurricane Ian the Remainder of the 2022 Regular Season Has Been Cancelled

As many of you know New Smyrna and the surrounding areas took quite the lashing from Hurricane Ian. Flooding ending up being the worst concern here and after the wind and rain died down the, New Smyrna Speedway was under water.

After the water drained from the racing surface and the pit area, the rest of the damage could be observed. After professional analysis Wednesday morning, it was determined that due to the flooding water that seeped under the racing surface, the underlayment of the track is not structurally sound and we have been forced to prematurely end the 2022 regular season. All October events (including the Son’s of Speed Motorcycle Event) have been cancelled and there will be no on track activities until at least November 6th.

All divisions championships, except The Florida Sunbelt Super Late Model Series, have been decided and the current point leaders will be our 2022 track champions. This is not how we wanted our season to end, but sometimes it is out of our hands. The 2022 Florida Governor’s Cup will decide who wins the 2022 Sunbelt Series for the David Rogers Super Late Models.

This year’s Governor’s Cup Weekend is still planned for November 11th -13th, as there should be ample time to make sure the racing surface is up to par for this prestigious event. All Governor’s Cup information is now online and can be found here: http://www.newsmyrnaspeedway.org/specials/gov-series/

We do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but remember many people in the state are dealing with situations that are much more severe. We hope that you and your family were able to weather this storm and we look forward to seeing everyone in November for the Governor’s Cup!

**We will provide further updates as they become available.

Bigley Memorial set on GO for November 26th 2022 at 4-17 Southern Speedway following Hurricane IAN
