Story From East Bay Raceway Park Photos from Karnac.com

The Saturday finale of week 2 put the “winter” back in Winternationals with cold windy conditions reducing the fan count, but drivers turned in for the final night of competition.

With the top six in points locked in for the DIRTCar UMP Modified 75-lap main, six heat races were held to move two drivers from each heat to the main event. Heat winners were Travis Varnadore, Tyler Nicely, David Pollen Jr., Bradley Jameson, Devin Dixon and Tyler Clem. The three B-mains gave the final chance for drivers to secure a spot for the $5,000-to-win finale. Those consolations resulted in wins for Corey Bevard, Seth Geary and Brandon Hutchinson.

The top six drivers were entitled to a special hot laps session, but only five chose the extra laps. Following that, drivers gathered on the front stretch to draw for position in the order of points. Lucas Lee went first and took the outside front row with Victor Lee, driver of #4, drawing the 4. When the draw came to the final competitor, defending winner Kevin Adams had no choice but to take the last pill – which was the pole position #1.

After all the competitors were set, the field came onto the track with the thermometer reading 40 degrees. Lucas Lee took the early lead and the field was slowed on lap 5 for an incident between Bradley Jameson and Seth Daniels. On the next lap, Drake Troutman slowed to a stop, ending his night as the two-time winner in 2021 was held out of victory lane this year. On the restart, Adams shot to the lead from the outside. Lucas Lee gained the top spot on the next circuit and led until lap 16 when Victor Lee charged top the front. Wednesday runner-up Chris Wilson, who changed an engine overnight, made it up to second when caution waved on lap 23. The yellow wiped out a big lead that Victor Lee had accumulated, but Lee picked up right where he left off. The yellow returned on lap 35 for the mandatory fuel stop with Victor Lee, Lucas Lee, Kevin Adams, Shane Burrows (from 18th) and Nicely rounding out the top five.

On the return to action, Lucas Lee lasted only a couple laps before dropping the from the contest. Burrows contin uing his charge on the bottom, grabbing second on lap 49. By the time the caution returned on lap 58, Victor Lee had built up a 6.2-second lead, more than a half track in distance. Adams was able to eventually slip past Burrows who kept charging along the low line. The effort ended on lap 73 when Burrows stopped on the front stretch, setting up a two-lap shootout. No one could catch Victor Lee, who cruised to his second win of the week.

By the time Victory Lane had completed for the DIRTCar UMP Modifieds, the temperature had sunk to 37 degrees. It was time for the 25-lap A main for the Top Gun Sprints. Billy Bridges, Shane Butler and two-time feature winner Danny Martin Jr. won the preliminaries. The Lee and Jeff Barfield Memorial Clean Sweep, awarded to a heat winner who could win the feature, stood at $600.

At the start of the main, Shane Butler took the early lead but encountered a rough spot in the surface, which sent the car flipping. Multi-time series champion A. J. Maddox was collected in the incident and out of the race before a lap was completed. When the race went green, Martin wasted no time going from eighth to the front, passing Frank Beck on lap two. By lap nine, Martin had built up a half track lead on the field. As the leader was approached a lapped car, the car spun and continued right in front of the leader, a close call at the midpoint of the race.

After a lap 15 restart, trouble struck for runner-up Mark Ruel Jr. who attempted to pass a lapped car on the outside and hit the turn four wall. With eight laps remaining, Ohio’s Justin Clark used the outside line to make his way to second, but Martin could not be caught. Defending series champion Tyler Clem was able to pull Clark to claim at the end.

The 2022 Winternationals will continue with three nights of Late Model racing with the arrival of CrateUSA Racing 602 and 604 classes for Feb. 3-5.

Victor Lee Makes Late Race Pass Count for Winternationals Win

The second night of the DIRTCar UMP portion of the 2022 Winternationals saw an increase in car count as well as the addition of the season opener for the Top Gun Sprints series. The pit area saw 63 Modifieds and 26 Sprints for a Thursday night racing.

Two-time 2021 Winternationals Modified winner Drake Troutman topped the field in qualifying and drew a 1 to set the fields for the six heats. Preliminary events went to Lucas Lee, Tyler Nicely, Victor Lee, Troutman, Steve Stevenson and Travis Varnadore. The top three in each of the preliminary events moved to the A main while three B mains set the rest of the field. The B features were won by Dawson Cook, Bradley Jameson and Allen Weisser.

Stevenson took the early lead in the 30-lap DIRTCar UMP Modified main in his first start in a newly acquired race car. The field was slowed for a caution on lap 5. On the restart, trouble hit as the field was approaching the green flag. Stevenson drove deep into the restart zone without picking up the pace, causing a chain reaction collision that involved a dozen cars. Lucas Lee’s ride climbed over Stevenson’s wheel and safety crews had to separate the cars. Race officials charged the caution to Stevenson, giving the lead to Lucas Lee. The new leader committed to the low line as the field shuffled behind in position battles. Kevin Adams and Troutman committed to the top line and tried to advance on the lower line. Tyler Nicely put on the best attempt to get past Lee, but found himself running out of racing room off the second turn with six laps to go. The new challenger would be Victor Lee, who last competed at East Bay 21 years ago. Victor Lee swept past Lucas Lee with three laps to go and roared to an exciting win. In victory lane, Lee dedicated the win to the late C.J. Rayburn, who had been an integral part of Lee’s racing operation.

The Top Gun Sprints held four heat events with A.J. Maddox, Luke Hill, Danny Martin Jr. and Garrett Green winning their heat races. In the 25-lap main event, Maddox held the lead for the first lap until Green moved out for the lead on the next lap. On the next lap, Martin slipped into second, as the fast cars moved to the top to make their way around the back of the field. Martin made his move for the lead on lap 7, sweeping low in an open area to complete the pass. The first caution waved on lap 10, but Martin was strong on restarts. Green was chasing and averted disaster late in the race when Danny Jones spun in front of the challenger. With his win, Martin picked up the Lee and Jeff Barfield Memorial Clean Sweep bonus of $300.

The action continues Friday night with 25 laps offered for Top Gun Sprints and 30 laps for the DIRTCar UMP Modifieds.

PME Now Sole Provider of Hamner Super Late Model Engines

PME Now Sole Provider of Hamner Super Late Model Engines

Sealed Engine Alliance Leaders (S.E.A.L.) has approved Pro Motor Engines (PME) to be the sole provider of Hamner Sealed Engines for Super Late Model competition racing.
PME owner Dennis Borem and Hamner Sealed Engines/ALR owner Justin Oertel reached an agreement to allow PME to build, tune, and maintain the Hamner Sealed Engines by PME. This relationship is now approved by S.E.A.L. to race in all Super Late Model races that use the S.E.A.L. engine rules. This offers drivers another option for competition and a more direct line of communications with the engine builder.
“We’re excited to offer customers once again a quality race engine with the Hamner Sealed Engines,” said Borem. “We have a proven track record with Super Late Models and are excited to work more directly with the racer and teams. We’re looking forward to what the 2022 season brings.”
Ricky Brooks, technical director for many series, including Southern Super Series, SRL National, SPEARS Southwest Tour, Trans Am, and a valid S.E.A.L. member, played an essential role in bringing these two builders together. “This is going to elevate this program further, get the program back to what it once was and I believe racers will be very happy. Dennis is a great partner, an experienced engine builder, and provides good customer service.”
PME is an approved engine builder for other spec series such as Trans Am TA2 and Pro Late Model. They’re also a supplier for Trans Am TA and NASCAR series.
The Hamner Sealed Engines by PME are available immediately for sale and rebuilds. PME also offers expedited rebuild options for those trying to make a race. Contact PME directly at 704-664-6800 for a quote and to learn more about the new program.
