Varnadore, Moon, Howard East Bay Winners

By:  Larry Jewett

10/23/2010

A five division program under a full moon went off without a major hitch as a few drivers took giant steps in their quest for the 2010 track championships. Feature winners were Travis Varnadore (Racecar Engineering Late Models), Billy Howard (Outlaw 4s), Eric Moon (Precision Kia Street Stocks), Michael Eaton (motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers) and Evan Page (Micros/Gadgets).

Howard moved out to his sixth win of the season in dominating fashion during the Outlaw 4 main. Howard won his heat, then had to deal with point leader Matthew Haynes during the main. Haynes encountered mechanical problems and fell back in the event, giving Howard some breathing room. Chris Zimmerman mounted the next challenge, but settled for second. Heat winner Stephen Hohlbaugh rebounded from an early race incident for third with Brittany Yates and Haynes rounding out the top five. (more…)

Racing Under the Harvest Moon

by Jimmy Rouse- Ocala Speedway Media

On a night where the Colortyme Open Wheel Modifieds headlined the night, the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association showed off their impressive cars, and the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks ran for a $1000 dollar prize, there just happened to be a full moon. There was also some great racing from the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks and the Gladiators.

The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, in their first race in over a month, would race first on this night and set the fans up for plenty of great battles on the night. Danny Miller, in his first race back since his terrible flip, Dean Jarvis, Heath Walker, and “Dough Boy” Patrick Williams were all fighting at the top for the first 18 laps. On lap 18, Dean Jarvis fell back with engine trouble and a yellow came out at that time. The final 2 lap battle was a real thriller and “Dough Boy” took a great win, followed by Heath Walker, Danny Miller, Billy Meadors, and Ronald Lentz.

DAARA, the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association, put on a show that could remind you of the first event at Ocala Speedway way back in 1952. With cars that have raced since 1936 to cars from the 1970s; and 26 year olds to 76 year olds driving, everything and anything was out there. Bob Jordan in his blue 1947 Kortis Kraft Midget won the Midget race, Ronald Hess in his  orange 1939 Chevy won the Modified race, and Captain Jack Sapp in his yellow ’60s Ward Watson won the Sprint race.

The $1000 to win Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks feature brought 31 cars out which led to a B Main. In the B Main, Eddie Kilbury, Willard Driggers, Eddie Lentz, and Jonathan Appleby earned the transfer spots and Vaughn Woodall moved in to the A Main through points position. The Feature had some excitement going on, as Chris Shea was working his way up from mid-pack. On lap 13, Shea got loose and Mike McDonald barely tapped Shea while trying to avoid him, which finished off Shea’s loop. On a restart, Mike Stalnaker looped it in turn 2 and Jesse Corbitt had nowhere to go except right into Stalnaker’s door. On the lap 17 restart, Jonathan Gillette did a ‘tornado spin’ in turn 4 which collected Richard Calmes, Chris Shea and Vaughn Woodall. At the end of the night, Scott Mooers outlasted the rest to take home the $1000, Robert Ray again finished runner-up, Jason Gamble finished 3rd, Steve Mooers was 4th, and Mike McDonald worked his way back up to 5th.

The Colortyme Open Wheel Modifieds had a fun night on the dirt with 1 major car swap: Kyle Bronson and Wayne Hammond. They switched cars for the night and it paid off. The race up front was between Kyle Bronson, Charlie MacNichols, Buzzy Reutimann, and Jeff Mathews with 2nd-4th switching continuously. Mathews didn’t have it easy, though, as he spun in turn 4 on lap 5. As the race neared its end, Reutimann passed MacNichols and Mathews passed both of them! No catching “The Killer” Kyle Bronson and he won his 3rd straight at Ocala, followed by Jeff Mathews, Buzzy Reutimann, Charlie MacNichols, and Larry Burkins rounding out the top 5.

The final event of the night was the Gladiators and they put a great show on with some good surprises at the end. On lap 1, James McCloud rolled the 57 in turn 2 and a flat tire was all that stopped him from staying out on the track. After the clean-up, Casey Feaster, in the 51 of Nathan Rhodes, had a problem on the left-front which pushed the car right into the turn 1 wall. On lap 6, more front runners, Jerry Taylor and Kyle Morse had a problem in turn 2 and the damage was evident on Morse’s driver side door. At the end, Matt Shea beat Devin Walker for first and Steve Johnson was coasting for 3rd when he slowed on the front stretch. Kathie Fisher had gradually moved up and was set for another top 5, but when Johnson slowed, Fisher jumped at the opportunity and got her first trophy on the night after her birthday. Ken McCloud was able to get around Johnson for 4th and Johnson did get 5th.

Ocala Speedway has kids costume contest this up-coming Friday along with the Late Models, Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks, Mini Stocks, and Gladiators. For more information or to see the complete schedule you may call the Speedway or visit www.ocalaspeedway.com.

JEFF SCOFIELD CLAIMS THE BIG MONEY AND POINT TITLE IN AUBURNDALE LATE MODELS

by Dave Westerman

The big money was on the line Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway as the Late Models and a huge crowd were on hand and enjoyed not only some spectacular weather, but an awesome Late Model race that saw Jeff Scofield play a waiting game, then come away with the victory and the 2010 Auburndale Speedway Late Model point championship.

A field of 25 top Late Model teams ran a very close qualifying session with Tim Russell setting quick time at 13.433 seconds closely followed by Anthony Campi at 13.529 and Scofield at 13.533. Joe Boyd and Daniel Webster rounded out the top five in time trials. (more…)

Teate Makes It Two in a Row at Mobile International with TBARA

by Marty Little
IRVINGTON, Ala. – Dude Teate made it two for two on the TBARA Gulf Coast swing Saturday night as he again bested the winged sprint car feature at Mobile International Speedway.

Polesitter Johnny Gilbertson hustled to the lead at the drop of the initial green flag but the first of two yellow flags waved on lap three when Bo Hartley ran off the backstretch. The field regrouped with Hartley at the rear and Gilbertson still in command until lap five when Teate’s fleet No. 0 powered to the point of the 17 car field.
Point leader Shane Butler gave chase and ran side by side with Teate for several laps until shredding his right rear tire.

The second and final yellow of the evening waved on lap 14 when D.J. Hoezle suffered a flat and looped his car out of harm’s way. When the green flag waved again it was all Teate as he powered to his fourth tour victory of the season. Hartley charged back after his early spin for second money ahead of Mickey Kempgens, Shane Butler and Steve Heisler. Heat race victories went to Hartley, Butler and Kempgens.
