Five Divisions to Challenge Ocala This Friday Night

By BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media
OCALA, FL- After persistent rain showers washed away opening night on March 4th, Ocala Speedway will try again to kick off the 2011 racing season on Friday, March 11th, with a $1000 to win Open Wheel Modified feature headlining the night. In addition, Ocala’s Hobby Stocks, Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Gladiators, will all hit the clay for the first points races of the year.
The Modified Division at Ocala Speedway has been dominated by Jeff Mathews, and he will be looking to extend that domination in 2011. But the problem with being at the top is that everyone else is gunning for you, and a list of capable challengers will be aiming to knock “The Repo Man” down a few notches this season. Kyle Bronson would be the most likely candidate to unseat Mathews and has beaten him solidly in the past, but has yet to do it consistently enough to replace Mathews at the top. Perhaps 2011 will see those fortunes change, and a $1000 cash carrot dangling in front of the field certainly will provide ample motivation.

There will be changes in the Hobby Stock Division in 2011 as 2010 champion, Dean Jarvis, has taken his final bow and exited the building into retirement. One would assume that Heath Walker would be the most likely to succeed with Jarvis gone, but Walker handed his ride over to his son, Devin, who has moved up from the Gladiators. So now the door is wide open for whoever wants to jump into the early season lead, and no doubt there will be a heated scramble for the top position when the green flag waves this Friday. And if Daniel Miller Jr. can keep the rubber side down and all of the pieces and parts attached, he might just be the man to beat.

Ocala’s Amsoil Thunder Stocks were set to do battle on opening night but never got that chance, so Friday the 11th will be their first shot at Ocala’s tough 3/8ths mile since their $500 to win exhibition back in February. This time there will be points to earn instead of just a paycheck and some trophies, so the pressure will be on to see who can take control of the division. Jason Gamble got the win in February, proving that he still has what it takes to pose for frontstretch pictures after races, and will be one of the top contenders for the championship now that 2010 champ Scott Mooers will be wheeling a modified in 2011.

For much of the season in 2010 Ocala Speedway was the only option for racing Mini Stocks on dirt in the state of Florida. That has changed with the opening of the 2011 season, and rules changes enacted by the racers last year have changed the face of Mini Stock racing. Nick and Dan Kerr will be back and battling for another championship run, but other top racers have moved on and opened the door for new faces to keep the Kerrs looking over their shoulders. If no one can rise to the challenge, then the season may be another father versus son battle for the Mini Stock Championship.

As the 2010 season wound down last year, several different racers shared time at the top of the Gladiator points list. But in the end it was the consistency of Matt Shea that captured a championship, as he came from way behind over the course of the year to take the prize. This time around there will be new faces in the crowd and some of last year’s contenders will have stepped up to bigger challenges, so those who remain are left to figure out who can jump out in front of everyone else. And as was the case before, consistency and dedication to run every race may be the key to the championship once again, with the only question being who has the strength to get it done.

Ocala Speedway will open the grandstand gates at 5PM on Friday night, with hot laps at 7PM and heat races at 8PM. For more information such as ticket prices and directions, please visit America’s Dirt Track online at www.OcalaSpeedway.com, or call the track at 352-622-9400.

COBB IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME FOR NeSMITH CHEVROLET DLMS EAST BAY WIN

NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series News Release: Contact – ROBY HELM – (865) 207-4157

TAMPA, FL –February 26, 2011-  Phillip Cobb of Apollo Beach was in the right place at the right time to take the lead with ten laps to go and win the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series 50-lap main event on Saturday night at East Bay Raceway Park driving the Wells Brothers Farms Special.

For the second straight night, Doug Horton of Bruceton Mills, WV dropped out while leading the race when he suffered a mechanical problem with his Mainland Transport Warrior on lap 40. Cobb was running second at the time and inherited the lead. Cobb led the last ten laps for his first career NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series win.

“Doug had it won, but we were in the right place at the right time when he dropped out,” Cobb said. “Everything just went our way tonight, and we had a good race. Everyone raced us clean and the track was in great shape.”

Dan Breuer of Troutman, NC finished second in the AES Racing Special, and Keith Nosbisch of Valrico, FL took the third spot in the Image Skin Care Rocket. Jack Nosbisch Jr. of Riverview, FL was fourth in the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Rocket, and Jeff Mathews of Tampa, FL grabbed the fifth spot in the Night Hawk Towing Rocket.

Shan Smith of Dade City, FL finished sixth in the Outlaw Race Parts TNT and 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA was seventh in the Bryson Motorsports Special.

Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA started 19th and finished eighth in the Hedman Husler Special to pick up the Hedman Husler of the Race Award. Greg Robertson of Waynesboro, VA drove the Wyn Bridge Industrial Fabricators Rocket to a ninth-place finish, and the defending and two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion Eric Cooley of Fulton, MS rounded out the top ten in the 78 Towing and Recovery Special.

Frank Wilson of Harold, FL finished 14th in the Wilson Lumber Trak-Star to pick up the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Race Award. Chase Edge of Lafayette, AL did not transfer to the main event by finishing fourth in the first 12-lap B-Main race to earn the Integra Racing Shocks Just Missed It Award.

Brindle was the fast qualifier among the 45 entrants with a lap around the 1/3-mile clay oval in 15.866 seconds. The four ten-lap heat races were won by Brindle, Horton, Jack Nosbisch Jr., and Cobb. The two 12-lap B-Main races were won by Mark Tice of Avon, MS in the Precision Marine Trak-Star and Doug Watson of Plant City, FL in the Brandon Auto Services Rocket.

Horton took the lead at the drop of the green flag to start the race followed by Brindle, Cobb, Jack Nosbisch Jr. and Keith Nosbisch. The Nosbisch brothers swapped positions on lap two with Keith passing Jack Jr. for the fourth spot. The first caution flag of the race came out on lap four when Chase Washington of Houlka, MS stalled the Greg’s Sawmill GRT in turn four.

The top ten for the restart had Horton leading Brindle, Cobb, K. Nosbisch, J. Nosbisch, Breuer, Mathews, Smith, two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model series Champion David Earl Gentry of Lewisburg, TN, and Steve Cook of Mt. Airy, NC. Gentry spun his Eads Farms/Dixon Plumbing Special in turn two on the restart.

When the field went back to green flag racing, Cobb passed Brindle for the second spot, bringing J. Nosbisch with him into the third position. K. Nosbisch got around Brindle for the fourth spot on lap five. Cobb and J. Nosbisch began swapping the second spot on lap six. J. Nosbisch was second on lap six, Cobb was second on lap seven, and by lap eight, K. Nosbisch began mount another challenge on his brother for the third spot.

While all of the dicing for position was going on behind him, Horton had stretched out to a full straightaway lead by lap ten. That advantage was erased on lap 11 when Shannon Lee stalled the Billy Riels Racing GRT in turn two to bring out the third caution flag of the race.

The caution flag came out for the fourth time on lap 12 when Steve Miller of Tampa, FL hit the turn four wall with the L. Miller and Associates Rocket. That was followed by the fifth caution flag on the restart when Dave Schmauss of Dover, FL spun the Cardinal Paint and Body Warrior.

Cobb and J. Nosbisch picked up their battle for the second on the next restart with J. Nosbisch passing Cobb when the green flag came out, and Cobb reclaimed the spot on lap 13. Horton maintained a comfortable lead when he began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 20. Business was picking up behind the leader, as J. Nosbisch, K. Nosbisch and Brindle began to battle for the third spot.

The trio went into the first turn three-wide on lap 26 with Brindle the meat in the Nosbisch sandwich. K. Nosbisch was on the inside, Brindle was in the middle, and J. Nosbisch was on the outside. All three cars went for the same piece of real estate, and the squeeze play cut down Brindle’s left-front tire. Brindle spun to bring out the sixth caution flag of the race.

Horton led Cobb, J. Nosbisch, K. Nosbisch, Breuer, Mathews, Smith, Robertson, Bryan Bernhardt of Clearwater, FL in the Terry Eaglin Motorsports Rocket, and Cooke down for the restart at the halfway point of the race. Breuer passed K. Nosbisch for the fourth spot, while Turner powered from the 11th spot to move up to seventh.

Smith and Bernhardt got together in turn one on lap 33, and Bernhardt spun in turn two collecting Schmauss to bring out the seventh caution flag. Turner got by Mathews for the sixth spot on the restart, and then passed K. Nosbisch for the fifth spot on lap 35. K. Nosbisch reclaimed the spot on lap 37.

Breuer got around J. Nosbisch on lap 38 to take the third spot just before the eighth caution flag of the race came out on lap 40 when Cooke spun his AES Special in turn four while running ninth. When the field went back to green flag racing, K. Nosbisch passed J. Nosbisch for the fourth spot in turn four on lap 40.

Running with yet another comfortable lead, Horton suddenly slowed in turn three on lap 41 and came to a stop at the head of the front straightaway to bring out the ninth and final caution flag of the race. Horton was pushed to the pits and was done for the night. That misfortune earned Horton the Dominator Race Products Hard Luck Award.

Cobb now inherited the lead followed by Breuer, K. Nosbisch, J. Nosbisch, Turner, Mathews, Brindle, Smith, Cooley, and Robertson. When the field took the green flag, Brindle, who had come from the back of the pack, got busy and passed both Mathews and Turner to move up to the fifth spot.

Mathews was able to pass Brindle for the fifth spot on lap 43, and Smith also passed Brindle for the sixth spot on lap 44. Cobb was able to keep Breuer behind him in the closing laps to take the win with a .455 second margin of victory.

The next scheduled event for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series will be a 50-lap $2,500-to-win event at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN on April 2.

Campi’s Patience Pays off with Icebreaker Win

By Rick Anges

Bradenton, Fl. The Icebreaker race has been a main stay at ASA sanctioned DeSoto Super Speedway for over thirty years and it would be fitting that this race would be the kick-off for the new Florida United Promoters Late Model Series.

Twenty-five of some of the best late models lined the infield for qualifying for the 100-lap feature. When the final checkered flag fell for time it was local favorite Jessie Dutilly topping charts with fast time. Dutilly would run in the top five early in the feature but a front brake problem would send him into the pits. He would return and battle back for a twelfth place finish. Steve Dorer, Tim Russell, Anthony Campi and Justin Larson would round out the top five.

When the green dropped it was Steve Dorer out front but it wasn’t long before Jeff Scofield would muscle his way around on the outside and take over the top spot.

Several laps later Dorer would pull into the infield and the crowd gasped as his car suddenly burst into flames. Although there was a lot of fire Dorer was able to quickly escape and the flames were extinguished. Dorer would end up twenty-second on the night.

Tim Russell would use the same outside groove and get by Scofield for the lead. Russell would pull away to almost a ¾ of straightaway lead as Scofield and Campi battled for second. Campi would eventually make the pass and set his sights on Russell.

Several cautions would put second place Campi on the outside of the leader Russell for the double file restarts but each time the crafty Russell would be on his game and get a good jump to hold onto the top spot.

With just a handful of laps left the yellow came out for the last time and this time Campi would stay right with Russell on the start. The top two would go into turn one side by side and when they came out of two Campi was the new leader and would hold on to take the win. Russell would finish second and in his post race interview said he had spun the tires on the final restart. Jeff Scofield in the familiar #92 of Dick Anderson came home in third. Anderson was the winner of the first Icebreaker in 1980. Anthony Sergi came from his ninth starting spot to finish fourth and in fifth would be Justin Larson.

The Florida United Promoters Late Model Series next race will be Auburndale Speedway on March 19th.

DAUBACH AND DAVIS AMONG THE VICTORS ON AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY OPENING NIGHT

By Dave Westerman

A great crowd and very unusual warm February weather helped
Auburndale Speedway kick off the 2011 racing season Saturday
night as seven divisions took to the track for a great night
of racing.

Young Lance Daubach may well be the driver to beat this year
in the Sportsman class as he simply dominated things all night
taking the heat race win then surviving a rash of caution flags
to win the 25 lap feature race in flag to flag fashion. Sporting
a new ride, Brandon Duchscherer worked his way up to second by
the checker but had no real answer for Daubach's fleet machine.
Subbing for veteran driver Dave Dunkin, James Wright III came
home third ahead of Richard Elkins, Jr. and 2010 Modified Mini
Stock champion Scotty Sharpe who turned in a stellar performance
in his first outing with his new Sportsman.

Lee Davis was as impressive as Daubach in taking both the heat
and feature over a quality field of Modified Mini Stocks. Jason
Rendell kept Davis honest but had to settle for the runner-up spot.
Sharpe came home third in this one just ahead of Chris Spring who
turned in a great run in his first Mod Mini feature after moving
up from the Mini Stock class where he was last years champ. Fifth
spot went to Nathan Florian who got to the track late but made
the proper adjustments to his car between the heat and feature
and passed a number of cars to net his top five.

Although a number of Street Stock machines are still getting the
final touches put on them for the beginning of the year, James
Wright III had his machine ready to go even though his numbers had
to be put on the car after practice was over. Wright then passed
heat race winner Cody McDuffie on lap 14 and raced to the Street
Stock feature victory. McDuffie held on for second trailed by
Brian Harbin, Sammy Cressman and Jeff Waterman.

The biggest field of Scrambler cars in more than a year put on
some wild racing as Richie Acres and Jeramiah Frere split heat
race wins. Acres led the feature in his Saturn from start to finish
as the action was "bump and grind" behind him. George Gorham, Jr.
eventually grabbed second spot while Frere took the checker third
then lost that position in tech allowing Ronnie Sorensen to inherit
the third place finish ahead of the brother act of Shane and Bill
Bennett. Defending champion Kim Gullett had a rough night getting
the rear bumper of her car knocked off in an early incident then
having to pit to replace a flat tire later in the race. She still
managed a ninth place finish. Several new car and driver combos
were in action in the class with several sporting classy paint jobs.

The Mini Stocks were short on cars but the fans had plenty to
cheer about as 15 year old Jason Swilley picked up his first career
feature victory in the class leading green to checker. Mark Wells
had a career-best second place run while Sonny Miles took third.
Heat winner Eugene Davidson did not start the feature.

Apparent V-8 Bomber heat and feature winner Bobby Mobley was
DQ'd in tech for unapproved guide plates on the push rods of
his car's engine allowing Alan Seay to take the win after starting
deep in the field. Matt Bozeman brought his new car home second in
front of Preston Davis, Larry Chumney II and John Smith.

Little 10 year old Kristin Clements did it again in the Kids Club
as she held off Dakota Hunt and Justin Cribbs for the victory, and,
as usual, her win was a very popuar one with the crowd.

This coming Saturday night the Open Wheel Modifieds, Legend Cars
and Bandoleros have their season-openers and will be joined by the
Sportsman cars, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers and
Scramblers. Racing starts at 7 PM. For more information call

Calvin Cook Wins Biggest Payday of Career In $3,000 World Street Stock Championship

By Russ Calabrese

Tampa, FL  -February 26, 2011- The 24 year old driver from Pace, FL won his biggest payday since he has been racing. “Man, I’ve won some $1,000 to win and a couple $2,000, but nothing this big before” Calvin Cook stated.

Calvin Cook started twenty third which was the final starting spot for the $3,000 to win 50 lap A-Main Saturday night at East Bay Raceway Park. “Man I didn’t think we had a chance, but I decided to go for it” Cook said.

The top six were locked into the A-Main via the points system accumulated over the past two nights. After hot laps for the top six, they all stopped on the front stretch to pull pills to see where they started. The Okeechobee driver, Tim Powers was the point leader after finishing second on Thursday night and winning on Friday night. Tim pulled the number six starting spot. The number two man in points was Charles Christian, Jr and he pulled the pole position. Third in points was Thomas Pratt and he started fourth. Next to pull was Andrew Gipson and he started third, Billy Carlbert, Jr started second and Donnie Reed started fifth.

At the drop of the green flag, Carlbert, Jr and Christian, Jr battled side by side for several laps before the Christian, Jr spun out in Turn two and bringing out the first caution of the night. Donnie Reed quickly took over the top spot with Carlbert, Jr in second and Pratt in third.

After starting in the fourteenth position, Tim Gay from Tampa took the lead on lap fourteen. A lap later the caution was waived as the Carlbert, Jr spun out in Turn two bringing out the second caution. Top three were Gay, Reed and Tim Powers.

On the restart on lap fifteen Donnie Reed quickly jumped into the lead and four laps later Gay had a right rear flat sending him to the pits on caution number three. Reed was the leader followed by Cook and Powers.

On the lap twenty, several cars crashed in Turn one taking out several contenders. Pratt, Roger Crouse, Andrew Gipson, Kevin Durden, and the pole sitter Christian, Jr.. That brought out the red flag so that safety officials could get the track cleared for racing once more. The top three were Reed, Cook and Thursday nights winner Jimmy Sharpe.

On the restart, Cook wasted no time taking the lead away from Reed and did so on lap twenty one. One lap later, Reed cut down his right rear sending the defending East Bay Street Stock Champion to the pits. With Cook in the lead, Sharpe held down second, and Michael Cherry came up to fill the third position.

On lap thirty two Sharpe drove by Cook on the outside where his car seem to work better as Cook stayed on the bottom. “My car seemed to work on the low side” Cook stated.

For the next fourteen laps, Cook and Sharpe battled side by side, never touching each other and swapped positions several times during that run. Caution came out once more as Reed had some more problems. Cook was still holding down your top spot with Sharpe still in second with Powers now in third.

Battling to gain his lap back, Tim Gay was driving hard to gain it back and did. But with a few laps remaining, Gay went charging into Turn one hitting the cushion and riding the wall nearly rolling over. But with great car control, Gay never lost it and the caution never came out leaving Cook and Sharpe still battling each other.

When the checkered flag dropped, it was the man who started in the twenty-third spot picking up the win in just his third time out here at East Bay Raceway Park. Finishing second by a narrow margin of just .008 seconds at the line was Tim Powers, with Jimmy Sharpe finishing third.

In Victory Lane, Cook had several people to thank, including Rodney Wing, the 2-Time Open Wheel Modified Winternationals Champion here at East Bay. “ I spoke to him and asked about tires, he said you just gotta go for it.” He also thanked his wife Cassie, car owner Danny Palmer of Auto Finance. His dad, Tim, Bo, Warren, and Greg James. Also, Nine Mile Machine Shop with Clint Holmes, Cook Motorsports, and Slay’s Mobile Home Service. “ This is a brand new car I just built and only had these three races. I still can’t believe this, I am just so happy” was a grinning and jubilant young man.

Kevin Durden finished fourth while Del Powell rounded out the top five. Thomas Pratt, Greg Valdez, Roger Crouse after getting in the crash came home eighth, Michael Cherry, and Alan McCafferty rounded out the top 10.

Also, Cook was the seventeenth different driver in seventeen nights of racing here during the 35th Annual Winternationals here at East Bay Raceway Park. President Al Varndore said he doesn’t recall that ever happening here.

Opening night here at East Bay will be March 4th for the Go-Karts, and March 5th is opening night for the cars featuring the Late Models, East Bay Sprints, Street Stocks, Outlaw 4’s and the 4 Cylinder Bombers. Gates open at 5:00 pm and hot laps around 6:00 pm with racing to get underway at 6:30 on Saturday night.
