Three Racers Collect $1000 At Ocala

By BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  Racers and fans turned out in droves on Friday night for the “Miller Lite Night of Thousands” at the historic Ocala Speedway.  The event paid $1000 each to the winners of three racing divisions, including Ocala’s Hobby Stocks, the Amsoil Thunder Stocks, and visiting Sportsman racers from across the state of Florida, plus featured another competitive show from the Gladiator Division.  Everyone was greeted by beautiful weather and a well prepared racing surface, but under an ominous full moon things did not go according to plan for many.

Ocala’s Hobby Stocks got first crack at the $1000 cash carrot, and from the start it looked like no one was going to get it as multiple spins and collisions resulted in three separate restarts of the race. And if any driver had been counting on a long green flag run in order to gain momentum, it simply was NOT going to happen.  Tim Gay grabbed the lead and held it through several restarts after this and that, but Mike Tovet was all over Gay along with a determined Joe Belkey.  Also in the mix was Kevin Durden and Donnie Reed, but Reed would become entangled in a later scrape on the track and be relegated to a night of playing catch up from the rear.

As the caution laps added up the officials were forced to shorten the race to 12 laps due to time restrictions, and that resulted in an all out scramble for the win with Tim Gay crossing the line first.  But a trip through the tech shed a few minutes later handed the win to Joe Belkey, with Mike Tovet coming in second.  Kevin Durden was third, Howard O’Steen was fourth, and Matt Shea got his second top five in two weeks.

The Gladiators ran the second feature of the night with Kyle Morse starting from the pole, but Morse would stumble early with a backstretch spin which gave Sammy Dale the lead.  Meanwhile Becca Paugh ran strong in the top three for a few laps until she was overtaken by Ken McLeod and Casey Feaster.  And Feaster was not finished, as he began an all out, multi lap battle with Dale that had the crowd on its feet.

As Dale and Feaster battled it out, the 30 machine crept up from the rear of the pack to slip into the top five, and Kyle Morse made up for his earlier mistake by doing the same.  Going into the final lap as the Feaster and Dale tussle was getting more heated, Sammy Dale’s right front tire deflated causing him to all but slam the wall in turn four.  That incident handed Casey Feaster the win while Kyle Morse rebounded to second place and the 30 car finished in third place.  Sammy Dale valiantly limped through the final circuit to salvage fourth place while Dave Ladrie used the steady and cautious approach to claim fifth place.

It took four heats and a wild B Main to set the 24 car field for the Amsoil Thunder Stock $1000 to win feature race, and full moon or not, the Thunder Stocks are always going to get physical, especially when there is a cash carrot dangling in front of them.  And true to form they took multiple restarts to get the first lap into the books and then continued the carnage throughout the 20 lap race, where it became as much a matter of surviving to the finish as it was to try and finish in first place.

Scott Mooers held the early lead but succumbed to a broken transmission later on that left him dumping fluid in the infield.  That handed the lead to Eddie Lake, who then had to contend with Dave Kinsey, Luke Sadler, and Ray Wheeler. Wheeler turned out to be Lake’s biggest problem, and on lap 14 Wheeler wrestled the lead away from the blue 96 and held on to collect the win and $1000.  Dave Kinsey motored his way past Lake to grab second place and Luke Sadler did the same for third place despite a tire going down in the process.  Eddie Lake wound up as the fourth place finisher and Jonathan Appleby hung tough throughout the race to finish fifth.

If anyone expected the $1000 to win Sportsman feature to be any different from the first three feature races of the night, then they left highly disappointed.  The contact began early with turn one being the trouble spot, then continued as the cars at the rear of the pack simply could not keep from running into each other.  Daniel Woody held the early lead, then passed it back to John Bradley, who promptly gave it up to a hard charging Mark Whitener, all in the first three laps of the race.  Phillip Cobb was also in the mix, yet never managed to take the lead if not for trying.

Whitener took advantage of clear sailing ahead once the wrecking at the rear eliminated the damaged cars from the field, and drove away to score the win. Dave Kinsey mounted a late charge and closed the gap, yet fell short and settled for second place as Phillip Cobb placed third.  Daniel Woody came home in fourth place, and Nevin Gainey rounded out the top five with David Ponton right behind him in a badly battered car.

On Friday, March 25th Ocala Speedway will welcome the World of Outlaws Late model Series for their final Florida appearance in 2011, plus another rough and tumble feature from the Amsoil Thunder Stocks.  In addition to the field of nationally ranked top dirt late model racers that tour with the World of Outlaws, look for several local favorites to try their hand at running with the some of the best.  Ivedent Lloyd will take the challenge, as will Tyler Ivey and young racing sensation, Christian Augspurger.  The $30 admission for the World of Outlaws will be an “all access” pass, giving every free admittance to the pit area for the night, and for more information be sure to visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com or phone the track at 352-622-9400.

Wayne Anderson wins Hoosier Elite Series Late Models

By Rick Anges

Bradenton,Fl. ASA racing returned to the high-banks of DeSoto Super Speedway with the Hoosier Elite Series Late Models.

Fifteen year old Matt Tifft from Hinckley, Ohio would start on the pole but it wasn’t long before Jeff Scofield who started on the outside of the front row jumped out to the lead with Wayne Anderson into second.

It wasn’t long before the lead duo would put on a clinic of late model racing as they went side by battling for the lead for fifteen plus laps before Anderson would take over the top spot.

Anderson would cruise to the win with Scofield finishing second, third would be Jessie Dutilly, fourth across the stripe was Icebreaker winner Anthony Campi and rounding out the top five was Joe Boyd.

Sportsman

Steve Gainey returned to DeSoto in a big way as he took the win in the ever popular Sportsman class. Mark Peterson finished second, third was Timmy Lowe, fourth was Greg Krom and fifth Duane Best.

Bombers

Once again the Bomber class had the fans on their feet as the final laps came down to side by side door handle to door handle racing for the lead between “The Punisher” Michael Crooks and Steve Elder. Crooks was going for the hat trick looking for three wins in a row but Elder would have none of it as he edged Crooks out at the stripe by a bumper. Jimmie Best would finish in the third position, fourth across the stripe was John Stewart and fifth went to Jerome Watland.

Bernhardt Picks Up First East Bay Late Model Feature Win Of The 2011 Season

Tampa, FL – March 12, 2011 – It was not the first night of the season, but it was one filled with lots of action in all five classes tonight at The Clay By The Bay. Over 100 cars were on hand to race on a gorgeous night. Blue skies prevailed and engines filled the pits as fans poured in to watch their favorite driver.

The first feature of the night went to the Street Stocks. Two drivers were behind the wheels of two different cars and father and son raced against each other as well. Eric Moon was behind the wheel of the 07 car of Donnie Reed and Thomas Pratt driving his twin brothers, Clarence’s car. Tim Gay was out in the familiar ride he drove in the Inaugural World Street Stock Championship during the Winternationals. “I had to come out and show my son how it’s done as he was talking some smack earlier in the week” he stated in Victory Lane. Jarod explained his tires went away as the both laughed. I have a lot of fun racing this car, but when it’s time to run the Limited Late Model, I have to put the toy away he also stated. Tim Gay and Thomas Pratt battled most of the race with Tim crossing the line first, with Pratt finishing in second place. Third was Jarod Gay as he joined his father in celebrating the win. Eric Moon finished fourth while Buck Woodhouse rounded out the top five. Winning their heats were Jim Baker and Locke Brown.

Next up was the Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds. Roger Crouse grabbed the early lead, but it was last year’s Champion, Austin Sanders picking up where he left off in 2010 as he crossed the finish line first with Crouse finishing second. Jerry Bruce, Jr took home third, while Jeff Rodgers moving up from the Street Stocks finished fourth and Thomas Braswell rounding out the top five. Sanders also won the heat race earlier.

The Late Models followed next and proved not to be denied of a great showing as the fans watched Travis Varnadore grabbed the early lead out of Turn two as he rocketed past two other drivers making it three wide for the lead. Mavrick Varnadore was right behind him running in second. After starting seventh, last year’s champion was making a run at the Varndore brothers. After several restart’s, Bryan jumped past Travis for the lead and the two battled it out to the very end. “Man I love those guys. That’s one of the reason’s I come out here to run is to race with guys like Travis and Mavrick” Bernhardt said in Victory Lance. Travis Varnadore finished second while younger brother Mavrick finished third. David Pollen, Jr had a good run finishing in the fourth spot while Dave Schmauss took home the fifth position. Winning heat races were Jeremy Simpson, Bernhardt and Phillip Cobb.

The Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bomber’s had 33 cars to try and make the A-Main. Three heats were run with the top seven advancing to the Feature. Picking up the B-Main win was Richard Humfield, while Jacob Vann and Bailey Purcell qualified as well. But it was Johnnie Alexander picking up the win in the 15 lap Feature with Darrell Taylor in second. Mathew Odell, Jason Burnside and finishing fifth after making his way into the A-Main was Richard Humfeld.

Then it was the Dirt Daubers for the final race of the night. It look like a throw back night as several of the cars had paint schemes to match Cup cars of the past. Last year’s Champion was in a throw back Tide ride. One was even painted to look like Danica Patrick’s car. But in the end, it was the Ricky Bobby look-a-like car in the winner’s circle driven by Bill Dixon. Brett Phillips finished second while Billy Carlbert, Jr finished third crossing the finishing line doing a 360 for the fan’s. Bill’s wife Janine Dixon finished fourth and Nick O’Lone came home fifth.

ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, March 19, 2011. The program will include Late Models, Q Auto & Injury Limited Late Modesl, Street Stocks, Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers and the Outlaw 4’s. For more information, go to www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office.

Open Wheel Madness Heats Up PGS

By D. Cope

Fans in attendance to the Punta Gorda Speedway were treated to hot, door to door action on a cool Southwest Florida evening.  The “Open Wheel Madness” event is a fan favorite as the race drivers compete with the risk of dangerous consequences when wheels tangle with competitor’s wheels on the tight turns of the oval.

The racing card opened with the Pro 4 where the top four cars put on a clinic in competitive racing.  While John Balzarano led the entire race he was constantly pressed by second place Ryan Collver.  The third place position was hard fought with Dylan Bigley and Cody Allen exchanging positions four times before Bigley finally secured third place.

The SE Champ Karts are perennial favorites as the super charged Go-Karts race on the large track.  Driver in this feature race use strategies similar to what NASCAR drivers use at the super speedways as they usually need drafting partners to get to the front.  This race saw several lead changes but Rusty Chancey held off a hard charging Tim Simmons for the win.  Third place went to Dennis Mace.

In the Cowboy Cadillac class the race was won with little challenge by Robert Williams who finished second in the series last year.  Second place went to James Dellea with third to Andy Vanscyoc.

The Super Stock class was a battle between winner Shane Leonard and second place Bobby Fischer who stretched their lead over the rest of the pack.  They raced the entire race nose to tail with Larry Braswell and Jamie Castleberry fighting hard for the third spot.  Castleberry had mechanical trouble near the end of the race and Braswell went on to take third spot.

The Dwarf Car series was the first of three open wheel events.  It started out with Larry Hubbard, Jr. jumping out to the lead.  He was challenged throughout the race by Andy Prior.  Hubbard pulled away near the end of the race but Andy Prior was seriously challenged by his Dad, Tom Prior.   Second place went to the son and the father third.

The main feature of the evening was the Open Wheel Modified “Open Wheel Madness” event. The 50 lap race was one of the more exciting of the evening.  While Sean McLaughlin led the race wire to wire, he was never without hard and serious challenge.  The first 24 laps McLaughin was pushed hard by Steve Arnold.  On the twenty fifth lap Arnold tried to pass McLaughin but spun out in the process.  He was put to the back of the pack and Tony Carreno took over in pressing McLaughlin for the rest of the race.  Arnold never gave up and passed most of the pack to retake third place by the end of the race.

Following the Open Wheel Modified event was the second open wheel feature with the Independent Pavement Sprint Car Alliance running a 25 lap event.  The feature was a thrilling event for the crowd with Mickey Kempgens leading 23 of the 25 lap race.  Brian Gingras who finished second pressured Kempgens throughout the race and nearly passed him on lap 24 before falling into line on the final lap.  Jim Alvis finished third.

Concluding the program following the feature event was the Fab 4 class.  The quick 20 lap event was a runaway win by Karl Garrard with Zac Campilonga coming in second.  Campilonga’s car was later disqualified during technical review resulting in David Patterson being awarded second place and     Linda Badali third.

The family- oriented racing card was also a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society honoring their “Relay for Life”.  Proceeds from the 50/50 raffle as well as donations from the “Relay for Life” table went to the ACS relay team from Florida Community Bank of North Port.  Kimberly Funk, an employee of the bank expressed her appreciation on behalf of the American Cancer Society for Punta Gorda Speedway’s support.

Punta Gorda Speedway has exciting racing action every Saturday night.  On March 19th, the Sportsman, Trucks, Legends, and TQ Midgets return to the speedway for an exciting evening of racing.  Gates open at 5:00pm with racing action beginning at 6:30pm.

Five Divisions Open Ocala Points Season

By BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL-  After a one week delay caused by stormy weather, Ocala Speedway opened the 2011 points season with five divisions hitting the famed 3/8ths mile clay oval on Friday night.  And despite cold temperatures, fans took in an exciting night of racing, headlined by a 25 lap, $1000 to win Modified Challenge.

The Hobby Stocks opened the night’s events by going from green to checkers without a caution, in what turned out to be a very competitive feature race. Robert Sirmons jumped out to an early lead and looked to be in complete control before Michael Tovet flexed his muscles and stole the lead with a gutsy slide job in turn 4. Kevin Durden also got past Sirmons and began chasing Tovet, but to no avail as Tovet drove away to score the first victory at Ocala Speedway this season.  Kevin Durden settled for second place after lapped traffic slowed his efforts at catching Tovet, and Robert Sirmons wound up in the third spot on the night.  Matt Shea and Devin Walker had moved up from the Gladiator class to the Hobby Stocks for this season, and they placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Ocala’s Mini Stocks went through a lot of changes in 2010, and the first race of 2011 indicated that even more changes could be in store.  After two heats set the field for the feature race, only four cars were able to answer the call when race time came, and race officials shortened the event to 10 laps. Ryan Babcock led the race from the pole position and fought off every challenge from Tim Zackery except for one.  With the laps winding down Babcock hit a rough spot in turn 3 and briefly lost control, allowing Zackery to take advantage and steal the lead.  Zackery earned the win while a disappointed Ryan Babcock followed in second place.  Third place went to Cody Kinsey while Jamie Tinkham claimed the fourth spot.

The message was loud and clear from the Amsoil Thunder Stocks from the moment that the first heat race took the green flag, that the rough and tough attitude that the division is famous for would continue in 2011 and would possibly get even tougher.  Eddie Lake held the early lead and looked too fast to tame, but Ray Wheeler refused to give in and kept after Lake until he finally took control on lap 15.  Meanwhile Jonathan Gillette, Richard Calmes, and Wally Douglas, all battled for the third spot with each gaining the advantage at times during the race.

The pushing and shoving continued throughout the field for the entire race while Eddie Lake tried his best to regain the lead from Wheeler, but Ray Wheeler proved too strong as he held off Lake for the win.  Richard Calmes followed the front two for third place, and Jonathan Gillette made a late charge to grab the fourth spot.  Wally Douglas rounded out the top five finishers.

Anytime a $1000 cash carrot is dangled in front of the top Modified racers in the region there are bound to be fireworks, and Friday night was no exception.  The race was punctuated by cautions due to solo spins and plenty of car to car contact, but everytime the green flag waved Kyle Bronson would rocket into the lead and then expand it. At the same time that Bronson was dominating the race, Devin Dixon was making his way from the back of the pack into the top five contenders.  Dixon’s night began badly with mechanical issues during heat racing, then he was tangled up in a multi car fracas in turn 2 early in the feature race.  But Dixon never relented, and although Bronson may have been far out in front, Dixon was managing to close the gap.

There was no doubt that Kyle Bronson was in complete control as he collected a convincing win, and Buzzie Reutimann, who surrendered his early lead to Bronson, held on to claim second place. Devin Dixon’s persistence and determination paid off with the third place finish, and Garret Stewart got a heat race win but finished fourth in the feature event.  And rounding out the top finishers was the 47 of Bill Howard, who hung tough for the top five result.

The final race of the night featured the Gladiator Division, and a new name on the starting roster looked to be ready to take control.  Sammy Dale had dominated his heat race and jumped out to an early lead in the feature, but a mechanical issue repeatedly slowed him to the point that he was unable to keep up.  That allowed Casey Feaster and Kyle Morse to wage battle for the lead, with Feaster eventually outrunning Morse.  In fact, Casey Feaster was uncatchable once he got in front, so Robert Graham had to settle for second while Kyle Morse finished third.  Sammy Dale limped home in the fourth spot and Rebecca Paugh claimed her first top five finish.

Ocala Speedway will be back in action again on Friday, March 18th, with the Miller Lite Night of Thousands.  the Hobby Stocks, Sportsman, and Amsoil Thunder Stocks, will all be competing in $1000 to win feature races.  Ocala’s Gladiators will round out the night’s action.  For more information on this and other events at America’s Dirt Track, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

BAGGETTE, CONLIN AND NICHOLS GET FIRST FEATURE WINS SATURDAY NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

By Dave Westerman

While other tracks were having issues with Mother Nature Saturday,
Auburndale Speedway saw clear, cool, windy weather for week number two of the
2011 racing season that produced three new winners.

The Legend Cars made their first appearance of the regular season and showed
up 19 strong even with a number of "regulars" not in attendance as they
"recuperate" from the February Winternationals.

Young sophomore drivers Dakota Baggette and Austin Blankenship split the
pair of heat races and made up row one of the 25 lap feature race. Of the
starters, only two drivers had ever won a regular season feature at Auburndale
Speedway - Devin McLeod and Justin Brown, but this night would belong to
Lakeland driver Baggette who simply had the field covered from start to
finish.

Baggette got the jump at the start and began to pull away from Blankenship,
McLeod and Lynn Wiles before Danielle Stratton's spin slowed the action on lap
seven. Zach Napoleon looped his new mount before another green flag lap could
be completed to keep the yellow flag flying.

Following the restart, Blankenship got "freight trained" and fell back to
fifth as McLeaod and Wiles set their sights on the fleet Baggette only to see
caution again on lap nine for a tangle between rookie Andy Metz and Brazilian
visitor Marcello Henriques that sent Henriques to the sidelines for the rest
of the night.

Once the green flew it was Blankenship back on the move as he worked his way
back up to second by lap 15. One lap later things got a bit rough for the two
ladies in the race as Stratton and rookie Becca Monopoli tangled in turn
three. Both cars received damage but were able to continue.

The race ran the final nine laps under green and Baggette drove away to
claim his first regular season points-paying feature win at Auburndale.
Baggette, a 15 year old student at McKeel Academy in Lakeland, did score a
pair of wins during the January Saturday Legend Car Fun Runs, but those
weren't "official" race wins like this one was. Baggette is in his second
season of Legend Car racing after having take three National and four State
Karting championships.

Blankenship was impressive with his run back to finish second while McLeod
nabbed third spot ahead of Wiles and Brown. Rounding out the top ten were
Mason Ketterman, Anthony Cataldi, Seth Adams, Joey Collins and Gary Verdier.
The 2011 season for the Sportsman class looks to be a banner one with a slew
of competitive cars on track for the year. For the first time in quite
awhile, two heats were needed to set the starting line-up for the feature with
Richard Elkins, Jr. and OWM Modified veteran Tommy Schnader taking the
preliminary victories.

Elkins raced out to a quick advantage at the start of the 25 lapper as the
cars behind him were really going at it. One driver tried to cut turn four a
little too close on lap four and sent the orange cone placed there all the way
to the middle of the front stretch to bring out the first caution.

Lap six saw George Gorham, Jr. go for a spin in turn four. During the
caution period, third-running Kevin Ingram retired his new machine to the
pits.

Elkins continued to set the pace and left the others to fight amongst
themselves for what they could get. Lap 20 saw opening week winner Lance
Daubach tangle with Brandon Duchscherer in turn two as they battled for third
spot. Scotty Sharpe could not avoid Daubach's car and the altercation put
Daubach out of the event.

Elkins went on to score a wire-to-wire victory, his first in quite some time
here. Mark Medeiros had a great run to finish second in the Blue Goose team
car trailed by Schnader, Gorham and James Wright III, again subbing for
regular driver Dave Dunkin in the other Blue Goose machine. Sixth through
tenth were Duchscherer, Sharp, Daubach, Jordan Harris and Ingram.

The Open Wheel Modifieds were in action for the first time this year and
defending track champion James Wright III was unstoppable all night winning
both the heat and the 35 lap feature. Wright was never seriously challenged
as he took the checker ahead of Josh Todd and Mike Sweet who was very
impressive in his first OWM race after moving up from the Modified Mini Stock
ranks. Ronnie Heard took fourth while Keith Lilley battled an ill-handling
car all night but still managed a top five.

Another big field of Scrambler cars was in attendance with Bill Bennett and
Jeramiah Frere splitting heat race wins. The feature belonged to Brian Tyre
however as he led from green to checker to take the victory over Bill Bennett,
Ronnie Sorensen, George Gorham, Jr. and Jeff Porter. Dave Canfield, Shane
Bennett, Bruce Cozad, Eric Wallace and Frere completed the top ten.

Matt McCrary took home the Street Stock point championship in 2010 by being
consistent even though he never tasted victory. That all changed this week as
McCrary took the lead at the drop of the green and never looked back as he
took a popular win. Jeff Waterman crossed the stripe in second followed by
heat winner Brian Harbin, Sammy Cressman and Kyle Peters.

The Mini Stock feature was a crazy one both on and off the track. Heat race
winner Marilyn McCrary spun on lap two and was hit by Sonny Miles eliminating
both from the race. From that point Eugene Davidson ran off to an apparent
win. However, Davidson, along with second place Jason Swilley and third place
Mark Wells were all disqualified in tech for unapproved strut tops that did
not match.

Chris Nichols, driving his first-ever race, crossed the line fourth but was
awarded the victory. The only other car still running on the track was 2010
Scrambler champion Kimberly Gullett who moved up to the class and ended up
with a second place effort. McCrary and Miles were scored third and fourth.

Alan Seay became the only driver to repeat his opening night win as he
passed Mark Roadarmel, Jr. on lap seven then went on to claim the V-8 Bomber
win. Heat winner Matt Bozeman came on late to finish second ahead of
Roadarmel, Buddy Phillips, Jr. and Byron Curry.

Daniel Conlin, Jr. finally got his first Bandolero win this week after two
years of trying. His dad, Daniel, Sr. was running second but dropped out
during the white flag lap allowing Noah Cornman and Trey Lively to claim the
second and third spots.

This coming Saturday night the Auburndale Trucks make their first
appearance of 2011. Also on the card are the Modified Mini Stocks, Street
Stocks, Legend Cars, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Scramblers, Bandoleros, and
Kids Club. Racing starts at 7 PM. Kart racing will also be held on the dirt
track on the east end of the parking lot during the day on Saturday. Gates
open for Karting action at 7AM, practice starts at 10AM and racing at 12 Noon.
