Lanigan Outruns Richards For Victory In Friday’s Sunshine 50 At Ocala Speedway
Kentucky Star Remains Undefeated In Two Career World of Outlaws Late Model Series Starts At Florida Track
By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director
OCALA, FL – March 25, 2011 – Darrell Lanigan has really taken a liking to Ocala Speedway.
The 40-year-old star from Union, Ky., emerged victorious for the second time in as many career starts at the egg-shaped track, capturing Friday night’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Sunshine 50.’
“Our car runs pretty good here,” said the modest Lanigan, who won the national tour’s inaugural event at Ocala almost exactly one year ago. “We definitely like coming to this place.”
Continuing his torrid comeback in the wake of missing last month’s WoO LMS season opener at Volusia Speedway Park due to a medical issue,
Lanigan scored his second A-Main triumph in a row to join Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., as the tour’s only victors in four 2011 events. He pocketed $10,675 just six days after earning over $20,000 for winning the ‘Cash Cow 100’ at Columbus (Miss.) Speedway.
Lanigan, who started fifth, steered his self-owned Rocket car into third place by the second lap. The 2008 WoO LMS champion drove underneath Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., for second on lap 13 and made the same move to overtake race-long pacesetter Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., for the lead on lap 18.
The remainder of the distance belonged to Lanigan, who kept Richards at arm’s length and survived a lap-49 caution flag that necessitated a green-white-checkered conclusion.
Richards, who started third, settled for a season-best finish of second in his Rocket mount.
He nearly passed Davenport for the lead on lap 12 but skirted high in turns one and two the following circuit, losing the runner-up spot to Lanigan.
Davenport, who started from the pole position, relinquished second to Richards on a lap-18 restart but held on to place third in the Barry Wright house car. Reigning DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., ran among the top five for the entire distance and finished fourth in his Bob Pierce-built machine, and WoO LMS veteran Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., was fifth for his first top-five run of 2011 in his Rocket car.
“The track was a little one-lane tonight, but it was still racy at the beginning and you had to get there (to the front) – and we had the best car to get there,” said Lanigan, who recorded his 21st career win on the WoO LMS since 2004. “I knew I didn’t have too long to get to the front. We got to third quick, and then those two guys (Richards and Lanigan) slipped up a little and we were able to get by ’em.”
Lanigan maintained a half- to full-second edge over Richards throughout the green-flag run stretching from lap 18 to 49. He had just taken the white flag when the race’s third and final caution flag flew after Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., spun out of eighth place in a chain-reaction scramble caused by the slowing car of Seaford, Del.’s Austin Hubbard, who was struck by a flat right-rear tire while holding fifth place.
Richards, 23, was unable to offer a challenge on the ensuing two-lap sprint to the finish. He acknowledged that he had effectively allowed his opportunity to reach Victory Lane for the first time in 2011 slip through his fingers when his bid to unseat Davenport fell short early in the distance.
“When I was up beside of Davenport (on lap 12) he did what he had to do – he got wide and tried to run me out a little,” said Richards, who has won the last two WoO LMS championships.
“When we slipped up (in turns one and two), Darrell got by. That was our shot right there. I knew from then on that there wouldn’t be much passing and Darrell was good, so it would be tough to get back by him.
“I took a chance. I probably should’ve waited because Davenport was softer on tires, but you never know. I knew the bottom was getting rubbered up and I knew we had tire at the beginning, so I figured if we were gonna make a move I probably should try it. It didn’t work out this time, but we still had a good car and it was a good night for us.”
Richards vaulted from fifth to second in the WoO LMS points standings with his performance, closing within two points of Moyer, who remained the leader despite tumbling to 20th in the finish. Lanigan, meanwhile, cracked the top 10 for the first time this season, reaching ninth place, 56 points in arrears of Moyer.
Both of the A-Main’s early cautions involved Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, Ga., a crate Late Model standout making his first-ever WoO LMS start. He spun in turn four on lap five as part of a tangle that included Jill George of Cedar Falls, Iowa, who ran a backup car after a B-Main accident forced her to use a provisional to start the headliner, and 2011 Rookie of the Year contender Brian Reese of Sharpsburg, Ga., and the upstart spun again on the backstretch on lap 18.
Rick Eckert of York, Pa., finished sixth and Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., placed seventh despite racing the final two laps with a virtually flat right-rear tire. Ivedent Lloyd Jr. of Ocala, Fla., made his home track fans proud by advancing from the 17th starting spot to finish eighth – and earn the $500 ‘Bonus Bucks’ cash for being the highest-placing driver who hasn’t won a WoO LMS A-Main and isn’t ranked among the top 12 in the points standings – while Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., and Tim McCreadie, whose night went downhill after he fell from second to fifth with two laps remaining in his heat race because he clipped the inside tractor tire in turn two, rounded out the top 10.
Hubbard established a new track record in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, blazing around the track in 14.873 seconds for his first quick-time honor of 2011. He was one of six drivers in the 28-car field to surpass the former one-lap standard of 15.041 seconds set by Richards on Feb. 13, 2011.
Heat winners were Hubbard, Lanigan and Davenport, and Brent Robinson of Smithfield, Va., topped the B-Main.
The WoO LMS continues its Southeastern tripleheader on Saturday night (March 26) at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga., and Sunday night (March 27) at Needmore Speedway in Norman Park, Ga.

Russell Shows the way at Auburndale
A near capacity crowd filled the grandstands at Auburndale Speedway to see race number two in the twelve race series of the newly formed Florida United Promoters Late Model Series. This series is the result of six hard working, dedicated race promoters with a common goal of revitalizing late model racing in the Sunshine State. Twenty-four teams would make the pull to Auburndale for this race including race one winner Anthony Campi. Odds on favorite, a regular at Auburndale, Jeff Scofield would also expect to contend for the victory. Other notables including the teams of Tim Russell, Joe Winchell, Wayne Anderson, and Joe Boyd would surely be a factor in the outcome of this race. Auburndale would live up to its reputation as Florida’s’ fastest quarter mile Track with qualifying times below fifteen seconds. Wayne Anderson would post the quickest time, with Tim Russell, Jeff Scofield, Jesse Dutilly, and Joe Winchell rounding out the top five. Per series rules a blind draw among the fastest qualifiers would determine the starting grid for the 100 lap feature event. The crowd was excited as the cars lined up for the start of the race as local favorite Jeff Scofield was on the pole, and would bring the field to the green. Flanking Scofield on the outside of row one was the car of Tim Russell, the winner of race one, Anthony Campi would start third, fast qualifier Anderson would start on the outside of row four in the eighth position. As the cars came to the green, a four car tangle on the front stretch would cause race officials to rerack and start again. The second attempt would fare better, Scofield would jump out front with Russell on his rear bumper, and again the pace was slowed by a single car spin in turn two. The restart would see Scofield on the point with Russell, Campi, and the ride of Jesse Dutilly all in pursuit. The running order would remain the same through several more yellows, all for single car spins, A restart on lap 40 would see Scofield on the inside, Russell on the outside in a side by side battle for the lead, the two drivers would stay like this for another five laps when Russell was able to clear Scofield with a pass on the outside. Tim would build a three second lead over Scofield and seemed to be on cruise control. At the halfway point the order would be Russell out front, Scofield second, Campi running third, Dutilly fourth, and Daniel Webster rounding out the top five. The running order would remain the same until lap 67 when the red flag came out for a grinding crash in turn one. Steve Doer who was running in the top fifteen drove deep into turn one, slower traffic forced Steve up, and out of the groove, and he slammed the outside wall nearly head on. Everyone held their breath waiting for a sign that Doer was okay, after several minutes Steve exited the car and assisted the wrecker crew to get what was left of the car on a flatbed. Talking with Steve Monday following the incident he told us they were able to salvage the engine, transmission, and seat, the rest of the car would go to scrap. Most importantly, other than being very sore from the impact Steve suffered no injuries from his wreck. After a thirty minute delay to clean the track, the cars would restart with Russell on the point and Scofield close behind. Again Russell would pull away from his pursuers and would never be challenged again. A late caution would set up a green white checker finish and Russell would not be denied taking the victory. In victory lane Russell thanked his sponsors, family and friends, and gave credit to the promoters that have made this series possible. Jeff Scofield finished second with Daniel Webster Third, Joe Winchell Fourth, and Wayne Anderson completing the top five. The next stop for the Florida United Promoters Series is April 2nd at Lake City Speedway in Lake City Florida. Bill Vandevender takes home the win at Punta Gorda Speedway
From Linda Jericka
It was a full moon over the speedway Saturday night, the fans packed the place and were ready for the always exciting racing that has been going on Punta Gorda Speedway.
Eight classes thrilled the fans with some of the best racing so far. The Sportsman class is one of the classes to follow this year as fifteen cars took to the track for their 35 lap feature. The 84 of Bill Vandevender of N. Ft Myers started the race on the outside pole and jumped out to the lead on the first lap and ran as the leader for all 35 laps. James Dubose of Arcadia tried for all 35 laps to take over the lead but finished second. The real battle was third on were several cars gave it all they had trying to get to the front with some of the best side by side racing action of the night. Timmy Lowe would finally be the one after a hard fought battle to claim that third spot with Ander Jackson of Punta Gorda fourth and Greg Krom fifth.
When a class has a week off as the Road Warriors did they came back in full force with 19 cars showing up to take home the trophy. They are not Road Warriors for nothing and all 19 came to do battle on the 3/8th mile oval with a lot of beating and banging and shoving their way to the front. Blain Baer of Port Charlotte lead all the laps except for the one that counted and Shane Leonard of Cape Coral after 24 laps of pressure to the leader finally got that spot at the checked.
Bandoleros ran a 15 lap feature event with only 2 cars but ten year old of Trever Taylor and the son of radio host Bubba the Love Sponge Tyler Clem ran side by side to make the first appearance
in the class that they will be running in regularly at the speedway. Bubba the Love Sponge sponsors both race cars and was in the winner circle after the race for picture with the kids as they thanked all their sponsors.

BERNHARDT DOUBLES UP AT EAST BAY
March 19, 2011 – One driver backed up a season opening win and four more made a visit to Victory Lane in Saturday night racing at East Bay Raceway Park.
The night opened with Outlaw 4s making their first official appearance after a March 5 date was rained out. Billy Howard and Roberto Morfin Jr. won heat races. In the feature, Shirlene Hammond moved from the second row to grab the early lead. No one would deny Hammond, who kept at the head of the field through several restarts. Howard charged forward to be the last challenger, but couldn’t catch Hammond. The winner told the crowd she will be turning over her ride and debuting a new car after a visit to Europe. She plans to return to action in May. Jesse Brown claimed third, ahead of Morfin Jr. and Stephen Hohlbaugh.
The Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Limited Late Models made their first appearance of the year and Scotty Williams proved to be untouchable. Williams kept his ride at the helm throughout the 15 laps with John Gross, who finished second, providing the best chances to catch the winner. Jason Pope slipped up to third in the last few laps with Shane Koperda fourth. Daniel Woody rebounded from a mid-race spin to gain fifth. Woody and Brown took care of the heats.
The Late Model feature proved to be a Bryan Bernhardt/Travis Varnadore show, but the show really never got going until the second half of the race.
The class developed yellow fever, unable to complete more than two laps before the caution waved. On each restart, Bernhardt was able to defend, never giving up the lead and rolling to his second straight feature win. Travis Varnadore posted second with Steve Mathis a steady third. Roger Crouse and Shan Smith staged a great battle for fourth with Crouse winning out for the position. Bernhardt, Mavrick Varnadore and David Schmauss were heat winners (Schmauss was unable to run the feature due to engine problems).
For the second straight week, it was a driver named Gay who claimed the Street Stock main. After watching his dad Tim take last week’s win, Jarod Gay was inspired and drove that way to claim the feature victory. With his win, Jarod Gay became the first East Bay winner on Goodyear tires (The track is currently transitioning to the winged foot rubber for 2011). Thomas Pratt slipped past Donnie Reed with five laps remaining and gained the second place he wouldn’t give up. Reed kept third, ahead of Billy Carlbert Jr. and Buck Woodhouse, who had started deep in the pack. Gay and Justan Rodgers were best of class in the preliminaries.
It appeared that Johnnie Alexander would claim his second win of the season after a dominant performance in the motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. The tech man had other ideas, tossing out the win for a flywheel and clutch violation. The DQ gave the win to Patrick Fiore. Jason Burnside moved up to second with the rest of the top five consisting of Thomas Burnside, Don R. Quinn and 22nd starting Darrell Taylor. Roberto Morfin Sr., Fiore and Thomas Burnside were heat winners. Taylor claimed the B main.
ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, March 26, 2011. The program will include Q Auto & Injury Attorney Limited Late Models, Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modifieds, Street Stocks, motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers, Old Time Modifieds and Dirt Daubers.
