Ray Cook Wins 9th Annual Chevrolet Performance World Championship Race

cookVLbrp112313 (640x427)OCALA, FL – Driving a car he named “Johnny Cash,” Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC started 19th and won the 9th Annual Chevrolet Performance World Championship Race for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series in front of a packed house on Saturday night at Bubba Raceway Park.

Cook had the right set up and the driving experience on a hard slick track, as he took the lead on 43 and never looked back to claim the $10,000 top prize in the Horsepower By Hedrick Special.

“Howard Stalls asked me to drive for him in this race at the beginning of the season, and they’ve been building it since then, like that old Johnny Cash song “One Piece At A Time” and tonight it made some cash too,” Cook said. “We had trouble last night in qualifying, and had to come through the B-Main to make the race, but we had the right set up with tires and shocks to get us to the front.”

Once the car was finished, the Stalls crew installed a brand new Chevrolet Performance 604 Engine right out of the crate they bought at NeSmith Chevrolet in Claxton, GA for $5,195, so they paid for the engine in its first night on the race track. (more…)

Johnson Looking to Finish Championship Season with World Championship Race Win

Ronnie JohnsonCARTERSVILLE, GA – The 2013 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN will be looking to put the icing on the cake of his championship season with a victory in the $10,000-to-win 100-lap 9th Annual Chevrolet Performance World Championship Race on November 23 at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, FL.

The National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee didn’t begin the season with the championship in mind, but a fateful decision after Memorial Day weekend led him to the $20,000 title.

“I haven’t raced for points since the mid-90s when I was with Barry Wright on the Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Late Model Series, as a teammate to Scott Bloomquist,” Johnson said. “The plan for this year was to run with the NeSmith Series through Memorial Day Weekend in May, and then do what we usually have done in the past, pick and choose races closer to home.”

The first five races of the season were at Bubba Raceway Park in late January, early February, with a driver earning points in their best three races. This worked in Johnson’s favor, as he missed the show on night two. He finished sixth in Round 1, and then turned in a pair of third-place finishes in Rounds 3 and 4.

Johnson picked up his first win of the season on February 2 at Bubba Raceway Park on February 2 and left Florida second in the point standings, 12 points behind Ronny Lee Hollingsworth of Northport, AL who won three of the first five races.

After three rainouts in March and April, the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division did not get their next three races in until Memorial Day Weekend with a trip of events at Hattiesburg Motorsports Park in Hattiesburg, MS, Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS, and Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS. World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars: Season Recap

Pittman Wins Closest Championship Battle in Series History as Battle Goes to Final Lap

111513_Numbers1CONCORD, N.C. – Nov. 15, 2013 – Daryn Pittman is the ninth different driver in World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series history to win the championship, leading wire-to-wire with an incredible level of consistency.

Only once in 73 events was Pittman unable to complete the A-main in his Kasey Kahne Racing Great Clips car. Never did he have an engine failure. In fact, he finished the season with 59 top-10 runs to join Steve Kinser (20), Donny Schatz (5), Sammy Swindell (3), Mark Kinser (2), Jason Meyers (2), Dave Blaney, Bobby Davis Jr., and Danny Lasoski as the only drivers to win a championship in the 36-year history of the series.

Schatz was almost unbeatable the second half of the season in the Tony Stewart Racing STP/Armor All machine. He amassed 61 top-10 finishes en route to winning a career-best 23 A-mains. Not since Steve Kinser won 25 races in 2003 had any driver been to victory lane as many times as Schatz was this year. (more…)

Keith Nosbisch Wins Sixth Feature In Just Seven Starts Here At East Bay Raceway Park

K-Nosbisch-11-16-13-WinnerTampa, FL – It looked as though Mother Nature would spoil tonight’s races here at East Bay Raceway Park, but the rain held off as Late Models, Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks, V8 Warriors, Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers and the Ladies’ Powder Puff races went off without a hitch.

First feature of the night were the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks. Winning their heats were Buck Woodhouse and William Burnside. Woodhouse would find himself on the outside front row and on the pole was Mike Wilson. Wilson would lead the first four laps until Woodhouse was able to get around Wilson before the first caution came out for William Edwards spinning in turn two facing the wrong way. Woodhouse would continue to lead the way until Edwards brought out the second caution stopping in turn one ending his night as he took his car to the pits.  On the final restart on lap eight Woodhouse found the Burnside brother’s William and Thomas trying to take over the lead but it was Woodhouse taking the checkered flag back in his regular ride as his brother Roy was gracious enough to lend Buck his car for most of the season. Rounding out the top five were Thomas Burnside, Jarod Gay, William Burnside and Brian Morgan. (more…)

L.J. Grimm Pulls Away to Win 5th Annual Eddie Brann Memorial

desoto2

SCOTT LOCKWOOD, BRADENTON — On a night that saw numerous lead changes, passing throughout the 32-car field and several spins involving race leaders, L.J. Grimm took the lead on a final restart with eight laps left to take the fifth annual Eddie Brann Memorial 75-lap Open Wheel Modified feature event Saturday night at Desoto Speedway.

A 12-car inversion allowed Wayne Morris to start from the pole and lead the first 19 laps of the event. Several cautions, including one for a crash on the opening lap that knocked out John Sappraicone Jr. and Doug Miller, allowed Wayne Jefferson and Travis Roland — the night’s fastest and second-fastest qualifiers who started 12th and 11th respectively — to use restarts to move up through the field and on to Morris’ tail. Jefferson eventually got by Morris for the lead on a restart on lap 20.

Roland and Grimm also got by Morris on the restart. Also among the leaders was two-time defending race winner Josh Todd, who started deep in the field and was up to fifth as the race got to the one-third mark. Several cautions for spins and debris bunched up the field for another restart on lap 31 that saw Roland take the lead from Jefferson.

Roland’s time up front was short-lived as Grimm took his first lead of the night on a lap 34-restart. After another caution one lap later, Grimm and Roland, who were running side-by-side on another restart, both spun simultaneously coming out of turn two and were forced to the rear of the field as a result.

“I didn’t think it was over for us at that point, but I thought I could still come back and get a top-10 finish,” Grimm said.

Todd found himself in the lead after the spin and would pace the field for the next 14 laps. As the field completed lap 49, Jefferson slowed with an apparent tire issue and came to a stop on the backstretch, bringing his night to a premature end. (more…)

Florida State Championship Races Hit Bubba Raceway Park

1115-16-2013Jim Rouse – With just each division’s respective Championship race left on the table (at least for points) there will be four champions crowned this Saturday and a further four on December 21st in the second half of the Florida State Championship races. This week’s task, however, is the Scorpion Racing Products UMP DirtCar Open-Wheel Modifieds, Bubba Army Limited Sprints, Limited Late Models, and 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks.
The Limited Sprints will tackle a fifth race with seven drivers mathematically alive in the fight. Otto Scrape leads Robbie Smith by a slim ten point margin and “The Hammer” Danny Martin, Jr. is just one point behind Smith. AJ Maddox, believe it or not, is the top driver in the standings with a victory in the Limited Sprints (Martin won in the 360’s) but sits 28 markers out of the championship lead. A further two back is Terry Withersppon, 55 back is “The Peruvian Outlaw” Mark Ruel, Jr. (who has claimed three checkered flags but only has one trophy), and Gene Machuga sits 56 back. Last year’s division champion Matt Kurtz also claimed the inaugural Florida State Championship ring last season but will make his return this week after an injury kept him sidelined for a couple of months. Kurtz will be in a new ride; Martin, Tyler Godwin, and many others have comfort in their machines as they chase a ring and $1500. (more…)
