Championship Contenders Finish Too Close for Comfort

Hendersonville, NC (11/12/12) –During ‘The Classic 3 Championship’ weekend at the Rock, Travis Swaim and Dillon Bassett not only had the responsibility of focusing on the race, but the Championship as well.

After Bassett clinched the Sunoco Pole, Swaim only led the Championship points by 66.  Swaim’s team played out the different scenarios of how the race could go and what position they needed to maintain the points lead. The team was truly tested when Swaim started running hot only a few laps into the race. As he began to fall back into the field, the power steering on his machine was starting to fail. The only option was to come in a work on their car under green.

While Swaim’s team hustled to get back on the track, Bassett focused on winning the race. With the pressures of a potential championship, the 15 year-old rookie battled with Clay Rogers the entire race. Only to come up one position shy, Swaim was declared the official 2012 UARA Champion with an 18 point led. After a hard day of battling his race car, Swaim was relieved that his team’s hard work paid off.

Swaim’s team were not the only ones figuring out the different scenarios, the UARA officials had to be on their toes and prepared for anything on race day. According to the calculations, if a tie fell between the two drivers, the tie breaker would be the amount of wins. With both drivers having two wins this season, the officials had to look for another tie breaker, which would be the most runner-up finishes. Both drivers had two runner-up finishes prior to Rockingham. The next tie breaker would favor the driver who had the most third place finishes. Swaim lead with three while Bassett had two. (more…)

Payne Hits Jackpot at IMCA Duel In The Desert

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Nov. 10) – Jeremy Payne outslugged a field of heavy hitters to become the first driver to win the top-paying event for IMCA Modifieds a third time.

Payne earned $7,777 for his Saturday night win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s Duel In the Desert. The new 2013 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifier had also cashed in at the 2005 and 2006 races.

“It’s awesome that this is my third one,” said Payne, who made the field by winning his Friday qualifier. “It’s been such a long time since I won the last time. I had some bad luck here lately.”

“It was a great race and my car was perfect,” he added, with a plug for car owner and teammate Johnny Saathoff. “The car worked really good on the bottom in hot laps so I just stuck with that.”

John Hansen was the runner-up. Two-time Duel winner David Murray Jr., two-time defending race winner Terry Phillips and Jeff Taylor rounded out the top five.

Steve Hayes was the IMCA SportMod feature winner. The 15th annual Duel set an overall car count record of 308, with 253 Modifieds coming from 22 states and three Canadian provinces and 55 SportMods traveling from 11 states. (more…)

Miller Takes Second Points Title in a Row at Citrus County Speedway

Doug Miller entered Saturday nights final Open Wheel Modified event with a 42 point lead in the championship standings. Miller would need to take the green for his heat and feature to claim his second division title in as many years. Miller would do just that, and then turn his attention to winning the 40 lap feature event.

Jarret Snowden (4) and Troy Robinson (0) would lead the 15 car field to the green flag, Snowden would get the early lead on lap 1. Robinson would quickly go to work on the leader, and move to the top spot just a few laps later. Snowden would continue to battle on the outside as the pack was bearing down on him. Lap 12 would see Snowden involved in some three wide racing down the backstretch, as the drivers entered turn 3 everyone ran out of racing room pretty quickly. Snowden would get the worst end of the chaos, ending up spun into the backstretch wall. Robinson would lead on the restart, but now had a hungry Doug Miller (53) and Richie Smith (289) in his mirror. Miller would take to the low side after the restart, on move by Robinson for the lead, bringing Smith with him. Lap 18 would see the next caution for contact between Herb Neumann Jr (01) and Tommy Schnader (19). Both drivers were trading paint in the laps leading up to the caution, which ended with Schnader spinning, and both drivers being sent to the rear. Miller would lead on the restart, but Smith soon turned up the pressure after the green. Smith looked high and low, finally finding a way by on the inside to take the lead at lap 27. (more…)

November 10, 2012 – Tampa, FL – Late Models, Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, Outlaw Fours and V8 Warriors were on hand tonight as a Championship was in sight for one driver.

The first feature of the night went to the Outlaw Fours. Winning their heat races were Jesse Foster and Nick Hebrank as they also made up the front row for the 15 lap feature event.  When the green dropped it was Foster leading the field for the first seven laps until the first caution came out for Megan Meyer as she spun in turn one.  When the green waved again with just a few laps left it Stephen Hohlbaugh spinning in turn two after running in the top five. Then on the restart it was defending Champion Jesse Brown making his way to take over the lead and did on lap nine not looking back and picking up his first win of the season. Finishing in second was Foster followed by Raymond Folwell, Brittany Yates and Hohlbaugh rounding out the top five.

Next were the Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds. Before the night started, points leader David Pollen, Jr. had just a 44 point lead over two time defending Champion Austin Sanders and Thomas Pratt and Bruce Harvey just 49 points back. Picking up heat wins were Harvey and Sanders trying to get points to catch Pollen, Jr. So for the feature it was Kyle Bronson and Bobby Dixon on the front row. On the initial green flag, Dixon spun in turn two causing a complete restart. So on the restart, the young man who has won 25 features this year took the lead. (more…)

Wheel In The Sky

Jim Rouse, BRP Media, Ocala, FL – As the most intense season in recent history winds down, we see plenty of drivers fighting over 8 championship trophies. There are still a few races to be run, however, and the Twisted Tea Top Gun Sprint Cars joined the Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators in 5 of those battles.

Hobby Stocks would take to the clay first and Mike Stalnaker led lap 1 from pole. On a restart Don Woosley, Kyle Morse, Marty Smith, and Thomas Burnside caused a 4-car pile-up in turn 1 that forced a red flag with 18-to-go. Up front it was Stalnaker upsetting the worlds of Trevor Gamble and Tim Powers. Gamble took the lead on the restart but after another caution he lost it to Tim Powers! The order after Robert Sirmons’ lap 7 spin from 4th was Powers, Gamble, and Stalnaker. Joe Boyd blew up on lap 10 right as time expired while Mark Maresca, Chuck McHone, and Rebecca Paugh spun to avoid. (more…)
