Davenport lays claim to Smoky Mountain Speedway while taking second-straight SAS win

20130325-221753.jpg

MARYVILLE, TN (March 23, 2013)—Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, GA has become the only repeat winner in four races during the Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series-sanctioned 103.5 WIMZ Rockin’ with the Stars event on Saturday Night March 23rd at Smoky Mountain Speedway.

This was Davenport’s second-straight SAS win as he picked up the $5,000 payday while driving the AES Racing, Mega Plumbing, EnCompass Solutions sponsored Clement’s Racing Engines powered Barry Wright Race Car. Davenport is now tied with Billy Ogle Jr., Randle Chupp and Jack Pennington on the all-time winner’s list with eight career victories.

Davenport, who lowered the current track record, started alongside Ray Cook for the start of the 40 lapper with Cook gaining the momentum on the start taking to the high side and the lead for the first eight circuits. Davenport would stay right with Cook then grab the lead coming to the ninth lap on the back chute underneath where Cook had gotten trapped behind a lapped car. As the laps were winding down in the main, Cook had begun to reel in Davenport and would have a great run going into turn three allowing him to get up behind him but the final yellow with just two laps to go wouldn’t be enough as Davenport pulled away on the single-file restart to claim the win.

“Night of a Thousands” Ends Exciting March at Bubba Raceway Park

20130325-221129.jpg

Jim Rouse, BRP Media – Ocala, FL- The first Night of a Thousands of 2013 at Bubba Raceway Park will highlight 4 divisions of tough racing and will include an Easter Egg Hunt on the frontstretch. After the hunt it’ll be time for the Bubba Army Late Models, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, Rent-N-Roll Gladiators, and Florida Mini Sprints Association to hunt for Coors Light Winner’s Circle and a place in the history books.

The Bubba Army Late Models kicked the 2013 season off with a 50-lap thriller in conjunction with the UDLMCS and it was Kyle Bronson who found himself the winner. Bronson is, of course, the points leader, however, “Catfish” Keith Nosbisch is just 2 points behind him. Nosbisch won 2 races last season but they both came on Friday nights and he’ll hope to break the Saturday-night curse this week. Rich Pratt quietly finished 3rd and feels like a new driver as he enters the season. Pratt has returned to his old days and is back in the red and yellow paint scheme that he always loved. Kenny Monohan has been quick this season with 2 top-5’s at the 3/8 mile after a podium finish in his Crate Late Model. Monohan will hope to make that the rule and hold 5th-place Brandon DeWitt off both on the track and on the points board. (more…)

Hickory, NC (03/23/13) –After a calm season opener, the UARA-STARS drove an aggressive race at Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 23rd. The event included six cautions, numerous fiery tempers, and plenty of torn sheet metal.

Starting from the Sunoco Pole, Ronnie Bassett Jr. jumped out to the lead early on. He allowed many drivers, including second place finisher Garrett Campbell, to pass him as he saved his equipment. The two also raced side-by-side early in the race and met back up at the front for a lead battle during the final ten laps.

Bassett Jr. earned himself the Pigwire Electricfying Move of the Race since he gained two positions by racing three-wide with David Garbo Jr. and Lee Tissott coming out of turn three. Campbell won FLUIDYNE Cool Under Pressure Award by racing hard, but clean. Campbell led early in the race, fell back to preserve his tires, and then back to the front to earn his second place finish. Ben Rhodes, Garbo Jr., and Dillon Bassett completed the top five. Garbo Jr. made an impressive comeback with his fourth place finish after making contact during the first caution on the second lap. He was awarded Circle/Xtreme Trophies Rookie of the Race for finishing the highest out of seven rookies. (more…)

Dave Schmauss Ends Drought Making It Back Into Victory Lane At East Bay Raceway Park

20130324-010937.jpg

March 23, 2013 – Tampa, FL Outlaw Fours, Late Models, Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers returned for action as the East Bay Sprints and Fan Participation made their first appearance of the 2013 Season.

Before the feature events got under way, Fan Participation made their way onto the track and driving for the first time in his 1986 Corvette was Ronald Woodcock II facing off against Doug Johnson. Johnson got the jump with Woodcock following him. Johnson went on to win the race and went to the finals facing RJ Buchner for the 2 lap finals. Johnson took off and never looked back picking up the win. Johnson stated in Victory Lane it had been awhile but he was glad to be back out there. Johnson is also waiting to get his race car built so he can race.

First feature event of the night went to the Outlaw Fours. Winning their heats were Zach Amundsen and Stephen Hohlbaugh. For the front row of the feature it was Billy Howard and Jesse James Foster. Foster got the jump on the start leading the field for the first seven laps until Howard tangled and spun in turn two bringing out the caution. Howard would have to tag the rear of the field. Several more cautions came out with the final caution on lap thirteen with Brandon Yates spinning in turn four. That would mean it would be a tap lap dash as Foster was still leading with Hohlbaugh trying to get around him for the final two laps. When the checkered waved it was Foster making it two features in a row for the Outlaw Fours. Holbaugh, Amundsen, Howard and Dorsey Strickland, after starting last, rounded out the top five. (more…)
