Neri survives carnage for Late Model win at Desoto

aaProvided by Desoto Speedway
On a night that saw a lot of bent sheet metal, flaring tempers – and even flying fists between a pair of longtime rivals – it was Nick Neri who found himself holding the trophy after Saturday night’s Turner Tree and Landscape with Sunoco Southern Racing Fuels 50-lap Super Late Model feature at Desoto Speedway
Joe Boyd grabbed the lead from polesitter Michael Atwell at the drop of the green flag. As Boyd and Atwell ran nose-to-tail around the three-eighths mile oval for the first 25 laps the action was tight in the battle for third through sixth between Chris Fontaine, Icebreaker 100 winner Jeff Scofield and Jesse Dutilly.
On lap 25 Dutilly and Scofield made contact in turn four, with Dutilly losing several spots in the exchange. The caution flew two laps later for Dylan Martin’s spin.

Scofield takes win in 30th Icebreaker 100

Jeff Scofield
By SCOTT LOCKWOOD

Desoto Speedway

For the first three quarters of the 30th running of the Icebreaker 100 this weekend at Desoto Speedway, 2014 Brighthouse Series and Desoto track champion Jesse Dutilly looked like he’d start 2015 in a place he found quite often in 2014: victory lane.

But after a mechanical failure 26 laps from the end of the race brought the Bradenton’s driver’s hopes of winning the track’s biggest race of the year to a screeching halt it was veteran driver Jeff Scofield who was left holding the trophy in front of the sun-drenched crowd in Eastern Manatee County.

Dutilly started on the pole and led the first five laps before being overtaken by Scofield for the top spot. As Scofield, Dutilly, Chris Fontaine and Anthony Cataldi battled for the top spot Cataldi and Fontaine tangled, triggering a melee that collected several cars and sending Cataldi to the pits with damage. He was able to rejoin the field before the restart after quick repairs.

Dutilly passed Scofield for the lead on the outside on a lap 21 restart and wasted no time pulling out to a 10 car-length lead over Scofield, Fontaine and defending race winner Joe Boyd. He had over a one-second advantage over Scofield when the caution flew for Troy McNabb’s spin in turn four. (more…)

The Joey Coulter Pro-Truck Series opens its second season Saturday at New Smyrna Speedway

Orlando FL 2-10-15 – The Joey Coulter Florida Pro-Truck Series will begin its second season officially this Saturday night as part of the World Series at New Smyrna Speedway. A preliminary 25 Lap event is on the schedule for Friday night but it is not a series race, but a nice opportunity for driver to tune up.

Its a month earlier than the season began for the series in 2014, and many drivers are still trying to get their trucks rebuilt and ready for the new season. There as also been a move up by a couple drivers and some that can not compete full time in 2015 but will run selected events. There are a number of drivers who have responded and plan to be there this weekend including defending series champion Becca Monopoli, veterans Danny Anderson and J.R. Garcia. Last seasons most improved driver Rodney Haddock along with his son Blake will be competing, as well as returning to action another strong lady driver Whitney Poole. Also indicating they will be there are Eddie King Jr., Kody Jett,  Eddie Lichtenberger Jr., David Patterson, Michael Goddard, Derek Pugh, Doug Elliott and Dean Butrum. There has been quite a few calls from the GA trucks and one driver from Charlotte NC planning the trip so we will see who shows for the big event.

The Speed 51 coverage is a plus for the series as they open the season and the series. Series owner Joey Coulter and series director Rick Bristol have hired exciting veteran announcer Ozzie Altman to handle the announcing for the series race this weekend, he announces big events all over the south, long time announcer of a few dirt traveling series.

Pit gates will open Friday morning at 8 a.m.  Practice begins in rotation at 1 p.m. The Pro-Truck preliminary 25 lap event is last on the card. Saturday again pits open at 8 a.m. practice rotating beginning at  2 p.m. Qualifying will begin at 5:45 and the Joey Coulter Pro-Truck 50 will be first race after  intermission.

We are excited to have Davenport Fights Back on board this season as a title sponsor, C.A.R.S. Racing for a Cause Inc. and the Joey Coulter Charity 200 Race Weekend are also sponsoring the series. There are a couple other sponsor deals being worked on and they will be announced as soon as possible.

Hope to see you all Saturday night for the sea on opener, bring some warm clothes it will be cold in the stands but the action will be Hot ! Go to www.carsevents.com of more info on the series. Go towww.newsmyrnaspeedway.org for World Series info !

DISQUALIFICATIONS ABOUND AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY AS BOBBY GOOD WINS PETE ORR MEMORIAL – DOUG MOFF TOPS MODIFIEDS

orrIt was a cold night at New Smyrna Speedway as temperatures dipped into the 40s
but the action was as hot as it could be with plenty of good racing, wrecks
aplenty and a very busy tech shed that saw five drivers disqualified including
two apparent race winners.

The evening’s highlight was the final running of the Pete Orr Memorial as the
Orr family had requested this be the final running of the event that was
re-named from the Orange Blossom 100 in 2003 in honor of the late racing
champion who scored many victories over the years at New Smyrna including a
pair of Orange Blossom 100s and two Florida Governor’s Cup titles. Many of
the Orr family were in attendance and greeted each driver during pre-race
ceremonies. Orr’s son Bobby Orr presented the final Pete Orr Sportsmanship
Award to long-time racer Doc McKinney of Ft. Pierce who said he was absolutely
stunned yet honored to receive it. McKinney himself was slated to run in the
Modified event later in the evening but his car broke a rocker arm in practice
and he was unable to compete.

Green takes first win at Desoto Speedway

sprintBy SCOTT LOCKWOOD
Desoto Speedway
In a little over two years of driving sprint cars 16 year-old Garrett Green has already achieved the honor of being the youngest driver to ever win rookie of the year honors at the Little 500 – the biggest asphalt sprint car race held in the country held each year in May in Anderson, Indiana. After Saturday night, Green has something else he can add to his budding racing resume: sprint car winner. He drove like a seasoned veteran in beating some of the state’s best sprint car drivers in winning the evening’s 40-lap main event.
Green started fourth and  got by Matt Alfonso for second on lap 12. The caution flew a lap later for Keith Butler’s spin coming out of turn four.On a restart after a debris caution on lap 17, leader Shane Butler and and Green made contact, sending Butler into a spin in front of the rest of the field. Officials sent Butler back to sixth as the last car on the lead lap for brining out the caution.
Butler needed just two laps to go from sixth to second, passing both Sport Allen and Alfonso in the same pass to go from fourth to second. As the field came to the stripe to complete the race’s halfway point Butler suddenly slowed coming out of turn four, ending his night.Green and Allen pulled away until the caution flew for the final time for debris with 11 laps to go. Green got the jump on Allen on the final restart and went on to win his first ever sprint car win.
“This is unbelivable,” Green said. “The tires were going away for sure and I didn’t have much left. I’m not sure how much this mean yet and it hasn’t sunk in yet. We finally got it and we’ve worked so hard for this.”Allen finished second, with Alfonso rounding out the top three.
