Mods and Sportsman to Debut on Colortyme Night at Ocala

OCALA,FL- Modified and Sportsman fans and racers have had a frustrating year so far at Ocala Speedway, as weather has targeted the nights where those divisions were scheduled to race. And in fact, neither division has managed to take a green flag at Ocala Speedway in 2010 so far! But that should change this Friday, April 16th, as the long term weather forecast is good and the racers are ready to attack the toughest 3/8ths mile in the southeast.

Colortyme Rent-To-Own Night will be the setting for the $1500 to win Colortyme Open Wheel Modified Spring Fling that is expected to draw an overflow field of top Modified racers to Ocala, and should provide an awesome debut of the Colortyme Modifieds at Florida’s oldest speedway. In addition to the mods, the Ocala Speedway Sportsman Division will hope that the third time is the charm, as the weather canceled their first two outings this season so far. The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks and the Gladiators will also be racing.

While the Colortyme Mods and Sportsman divisions have been battling the weather instead of each other at Ocala Speedway, there has been at least one Gladiator race which was won by Casey Feaster. Feaster is in a new race car for 2010 and has been making waves wherever he races. In addition to his win at Ocala, the 20 car has gained a total of 26 positions in two weeks of racing at Volusia Speedway Park, as Feaster started races in the rear of the pack and turned that adversity into top 5 finishes.

Last Friday’s victory in the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks gave Daniel Miller Jr. the points lead over Hillbilly Racing’s Joe Boyd. But Boyd is only one point shy of Miller, and both Heath Walker and Dean Jarvis are tied at 5 points short of number one. With a points race this tight, every move on the track could easily have a major bearing on who gets the championship this season, and everyone will be giving it their all to put themselves on top of the others.

Wild Finish for Blizzard Series

Apr 10, 2010 – Wild Finish for Blizzard Series

Vickie Pollard, the mother of Super Late Model driver Bubba Pollard, was pacing behind the grandstands at Five Flags Speedway. There were four laps left with a restart looming.
“I always sit by myself during a race,” she said. “I tend to grab people I don’t know.”

Her son was second behind 14-year-old Chase Elliott. On the restart, Elliott drifted high and Pollard ducked low to take the lead.
Vickie Pollard grabbed the elbow of a bystander as she jumped up and down.

Her excitement continued into Victory Lane as Pollard took the checkered flag of the opening Blizzard Series race of the season.
When told of his mother’s antics, Bubba Pollard smiled. “Sometimes,” he said, “she’s even worse than that.” The win was a little solace to the driver, who entered last year’s Blizzard Series finale with the points lead. But he was knocked out of the championship in a wreck on the opening-lap.

“It happens all the time,” he said. “You win some you shouldn’t and you lose some you shouldn’t.” And until four laps left in the race Friday everybody thought Augie Grill was going to win. A race that was shaping up to be one of the quickest, turned into a never-ending scene with a bizarre event. He dominated from the start, taking the pole with a track-record time. After a couple of early cautions, the race went green for 77 laps.

Grill lapped all but seven cars and had built a nine-second lead. It appeared that no one would even have to pit for tires. But a lapped car spun with four laps left bringing out a caution. Grill and the other seven lead-lap cars pitted for fresh tires. As they were about to restart, officials noticed liquid on the track and discovered it coming from Grill’s car. He had to pit and did not return to the race. He later said a bearing came lose in his rear end.

That left Elliott, who had spun out on Lap 12, in the lead. The son of famed NASCAR star Bill Elliott, led the cars through a long caution period as officials tried to dry the liquid all around the track. On the restart, Elliott drifted high and Pollard pulled alongside him, but a caution came out before the lap was completed when Mike Garvey hit the wall. On the next restart, Elliott drifted high again. This time, Pollard made the pass. “I spun my tires. It was my fault,” Elliott said.

Ryan Lawler, driving for Stanley Smith, finished third, while Casey Smith was fourth and Jeff Fultz fifth. Defending series champion Johanna Long finished seventh.

Pollard thanked his car owner, former Snowball Derby champion Ronnie Sanders, for the opportunity to drive. It was his first Super Late Model race for Sanders, who is coming off of cancer surgery. Sanders stood in Victory Lane with Pollard as the two posed for photos with the trophy. In his storied race career, Sanders said he’s seen the unexpected happen many times. “We’ll take a win any way we can get it,” he said. The win puts Pollard back into the points lead going into the second Blizzard race on May 28.

As he continued to pose for photos in Victory Lane, Vickie Pollard had calmed down, but she was still beaming at her son.
“He could have at least shaved today,” she laughed.

Sportsman
Steve Buttrick chased down the leaders over the final laps and took the checkered flag in the caution-free 20-lap Sportsman feature. Bubba Winslow and Randy Thompson were running 1-2 and had pulled away from the rest of the field at the halfway point.
But Buttrick charged forward and caught them. He passed Thompson and pulled alongside Winslow on the outside and made the pass with two laps left. He then pulled away for the victory.

“That felt good,” Buttrick said. Thompson took second, while Winslow was third and Jim Pokrant fourth.

Stevie Mercer, who had won the first two features of the season, entered the race with some mechanical problems. He started fifth and held his ground until slowing and pitting on Lap 14. He finished 13th and gave up the points lead.

Conley tops Checkered Flag Sprints Feature at CCMP

The Checked Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) at Charlotte County Motorsports Park on Saturday April 10.

Ric Voisey in the 69 car had the pole for the start of the SALDANA first heat race.19 of Keith Butler took the lead on lap two and held onto the lead and took the first heat race win. The pole position for the start of the PRO SHOCKS second heat went to Frankie Hurst in the 6. Jimmy Alvis Jr. in 21 took the initial race lead and went on to win the heat. (more…)

Amanda Ferguson tops Top Gun Sprints at Ocala

The Top Gun Sprints made their first visit of 3 for 2010 to Ocala Speedway on April 9 2010. There were 19 cars at the track to give fans three heat races and a 25 lap feature race.

Mark Ruel Jr. in the 83 car has the pole for the start of the first heat race with Tim George in the 1 car on the outside. The 24 car of Danny Martin took the checkered flag and the heat win. Gene Lasker in the 02 had the pole for the second heat with Darrin Miller in the 21M on the outside. It was the 21M car that made the better start and led the heat from start to finish to take the win. The 13 car of Coty Smith had the pole for the third and final heat race alongside Rocky Sullivan in the 15 on the outside. The 6 of Mike Schroeder took the race lead on the first lap and went on to win the heat.

The feature race was lined up using passing points and a 6 car inversion, putting Tim George in the 1 on the pole with Amanda Ferguson in the 21A on the outside. The 21A made a good start and took the early race lead. Amanda held on to the lead and took the feature race win. It was her first win on dirt in a sprint car for only being 16 watch out guys. Tim George in the 1 finished in second place followed by the 24 of Danny Martin, Darrin Miller the 21M and Ryan Partin in the 14 rounded out the top five.

The next race for Top Gun Sprints is April 24,2010 at Volusia Speedway Park.

Action and Drama Highlight Monster Energy Night at VSP

BARBERVILLE,FL- Race fans had to know up front that they would get plenty of excitement and entertainment when they saw the Daytona Dodge-Chrysler Late Models and Budweiser Modifieds were running on the same Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park. But they quickly discovered that the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers, all create their own special brand of excitement as well, as Monster Energy Drink Night cranked up the action at the south’s fastest half mile.

The Budweiser Modifieds saw “Big Mac” Charlie MacNichol fall by the wayside early during heat racing, while Jeff Mathews firmly planted himself in the front row for the feature event, just outside of pole sitter Traver Boettcher. And as soon as the green waved the “Repo Man” shot the 33 car into the lead and remained there despite a valiant effort by Jimmie and Jamie Carter to get past him. Jamie Carter had started in the 7th position and worked his way to second when some late race cautions bunched up the field and gave him a few good shots at Mathews. Carter could get his car alongside of the 33, but Mathews proved a tad too tough to tame. Jeff Mathews scored the win while Jamie Carter was a close second and Jimmie Carter rounded out the top three. Rob Underwood managed to finish in the fourth spot while James Smith got a top 5 finish as well.

Miss VSP 2010 Emily Chaney did the honors of waving the green for the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks and the second feature race of the night. Billy Medders led the field to the green flag but Mike Tovet seized early control of the race and fought to hold off a three wide challenge on the backstretch. That challenge failed to sort itself out in turns 3 and 4, and the resulting contact brought a caution and sent Pat Buckley to the pits on a hook. Tovet would later develop problems and eventually leave the race as well a few laps later. As Tovet faltered, Trevor Gamble took advantage and grabbed the lead, refusing to relinquish it until he saw the checkers waving. Phillip Brown gave chase, then late in the race had to fend off a hard charging Bubba Christian who suddenly barreled into the top three.

While Trevor Gamble finished first and Bubba Christian crossed the line in third place, drama in the pit area after the race scrambled the top five standings as disqualifications were ordered for conduct issues. Phillip Brown, who had begun the race in the 10th position, was declared the winner, which amounted to a 9 position gain on the night. Tim Hughes moved up two positions to second place as Gamble and Christian were ousted. Billy Medders claimed the third spot followed by David Higgs and Mike Tovet.

Race fans know that when the 21 car of Ivedent Lloyd drives onto the race track that “The Professor” will likely entertain them while he educates everyone else, and as one might expect, the rest of the Daytona Dodge-Chrysler Late Model field was in no mood to sit through class. Lloyd rocketed his car into the lead and began a lesson in domination that lasted for 25 laps, while his teammate, Darrell Padgett schooled the field in passing by gaining 15 positions to finish second behind Ivedent Lloyd.

David Clegg had a respectable night despite Lloyd and Padgett’s attention getting performances. Clegg ignored all of the hoopla, drove his own race, and finished third on the night, followed by Dillon Wood who was racing “incognito” Saturday night behind the wheel of the 7 car. Richard Ferry also got a top five finish after starting on the pole, crossing the line behind Wood.

Shawn “Beavis” Kosier had won three 4 Cylinder Challenger races in a row coming into Saturday night, and once again he would find his way to some hardware and an interview with Joe Dirt, but not for winning the race. Steven Cox managed to get around Kosier on lap 4 and remain there, breaking the win streak for the 97 car at three. And while Cox celebrated in Victory Lane, Kosier was happy as well, satisfied with second place if the win was out of reach. Cox’s 88 machine looked untouchable after it passed Kosier cleanly, then held off every challenge with ease.

RJ Glaser grabbed the third spot after harassing Kosier for the second spot for most of the race, while Gilbert Espy finished in the fourth spot. And the big mover and shaker of the night was Casey Feaster, who earned a DQ for his heat race when he was busted for speeding in the pit area, and had to start the feature race on the tail. Feaster worked his way forward 14 positions for the fifth place finish, while Robert Graham gained 12 spots in an 8th place effort.

The Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks have created their own brand of drama the last few outings both on and off of the race track, and Saturday night was no different. The result of it all was a highly competitive race where the top positions were almost always in dispute, plus enough beating and banging action that the competition clock expired before the scheduled 20 laps were completed.

Jumpin’ Jim Shaw battled for the early lead with Jim Goempel and Chad Scranton until a tangle in turn 3 sent Goempel to the pits. Meanwhile Matt Schell and David Whitt were on the move, muscling their way through traffic to enter the fray up front and contend with Shaw for the win. Whitt assumed the lead and held it despite the best efforts of Matt Schell, and Jim Shaw overcame a lap 6 tangle to return to the top three. Other racers were making moves further back in the pack as well, as AJ McKay climbed from the last starting position to 13th, and John Thorpe gained 7 spots to 9th.

David Whitt proved to be a little too much for Matt Schell, grabbing a victory while Schell settled for second place. Jumpin’ Jim Shaw was the third place finisher, while Scott Mooers claimed the fourth spot and Chad Scranton placed fifth.

Saturday, April 17th brings Fastline 5 racing to Volusia Speedway Park as the Daytona Dodge-Chrysler Late models, Taylor Racing Products Sportsman, Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks, and 4 Cylinder Challengers, battle on the south’s fastest half mile.
