Prather Prevails for East Bay Win

By:  Larry Jewett

4/10/2010

“This one is for my dad,” were the words of Limited Late Model racer J.R. Prather Jr., who returned to Victory Lane for the first time since his father, a long time supporter of East Bay, passed away a little more than a year ago. “I tried so hard last year and this is a new year. I was thinking of dad when I crossed the line.”

Prather’s win came from the outside pole of the 15-lap main. “When you’re in the position, you have to seal the deal,” he said. Prather grabbed the lead from the start to back up his heat race. Alex Boerner was thrilling the crowd with his outside runs that moved him into second place by lap 9. Boerner put the pressure on, but Prather was focused on hitting his marks. Boerner kept second as Forrest Gough rallied from an earlier spin for third. William Hampton and Daniel Woody rounded out the top five. Phillip Cobb joined Prather as a heat race winner.

Matthew Haynes became a double winner in the Outlaw 4 class, backing up his win from two weeks ago.  Haynes went wire-to-wire in a caution-free affair. Brian Danforth, Billy Howard, 2009 division champion Stephen Hohlbaugh and Charlie Staats completed the top five. Chris Zimmerman and Howard were heat winners.

Roger Crouse made an outside pass on race leader Buzzie Reutimann and parlayed it to his second straight Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modified victory. “He has a lot of experience here,” said Crouse of Reutimann. “I tried the outside and it was faster. I can’t believe I passed Buzzie Reutimann outside.” No one else passed Reutimann as he took second, ahead of John Bradley, Bobby Dixon and Austin Sanders, who started 12th in the main. Reutimann and Dixon took preliminary wins.

Former asphalt racer Jeff Rodgers has taken a liking to dirt track racing. Despite starting in the back, Rodgers slipped past race leader Garry Sheffield on the eighth lap and held on to claim his first-ever dirt win in the Street Stock class. Clarence Pratt made a last lap pass on Buck Woodhouse to finish second. Fourth went to Sheffield and former feature winner Thomas Pratt claimed fifth.

Defending champion Jim Baker vaulted from the pole to claim a feature win in the motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers. Elliott Morgan added another top five to his resume with a steady second place. John Detamore rallied back to take third, ahead of Jimmy Williams and Patrick Tabb. Roberto Morfin Jr. saw a top five taken away when he refused an engine claim. Baker, Morfin Jr. and Detamore won the heats.

Collin Kruse topped the 10-car field in the Dirt Dauber finale, despite a spin on lap 10.

ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, April 17, 2010.  The Racecar Engineering Late Models, East Bay Sprints, Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modifieds, Outlaw 4s and motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers are in action. A special driver’s autograph session for Late Model and Sprint drivers will be conducted at intermission. For more information go to www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office.

Top Gun Sprints Challenge Ocala

by Ocala Speedway Media

 All Photos Courtesy of rewingphotos.com

OCALA, FL-  A cool and dry night greeted the fans and racers who spent their Friday evening at Ocala Speedway, and as usual the toughest 3/8ths mile in the southeast maintained that rugged reputation.  The Top Gun Sprint Car Series was in town to challenge the old race track along with three other regular racing divisions, and before the highlight event was over the crowd was literally on its feet.

Tim George led 17 of the 19 Top Gun Sprints in attendance to the green flag, but a couple of misfires in the form of spins from contact forced restarts, plus sent Ryan Partin to the rear of the field.  The third time was the charm for 16 year old Amanda Ferguson, who blew past Tim George on the opening lap and opened up a huge lead by lap 4.

Things got a bit hairy on lap five as a sideways car on the front stretch collected another, and the 02 of Gene Lasker ended up flipping right in front of the grandstands and causing a red flag to be displayed.  Lasker leapt from his car in dramatic fashion, demonstrating that he was alright, but the remains of his sprint car was dragged to the pit area on a hook.

After the restart Amanda Ferguson again took control of the race and never looked back, although the ending came a bit later than had been expected.  The 22 of Shawn Murray, which had been flirting with the front stretch wall all night long at times, finally smacked that wall hard enough to send him spinning down the front stretch and coming to rest almost directly under the flag stand as Ferguson was coming out of the final turn.  That forced a green-white-checker situation, but Amanda Ferguson was up to the challenge, going 26 laps to get the win.

It was Amanda Ferguson’s first win on clay as her only other victory came at Charlotte County Motorsports Park in Punta Gorda, running wingless on asphalt.  Danny Martin chased after Ferguson all night but settled for second place, Danny Martin took third place honors, and Darrin Miller placed fourth. And after being relegated to the rear of the field at the start, Ryan Partin battled back to finish in the fifth position.

It did not pay to be in front while Ocala’s Mini Stock Division was racing on Friday night.  Buddy Pope was on the pole and had the lead for a moment, before problems slowed his car and passed the lead to Blake Spencer after a brief caution.  Spencer looked to be in complete control but Keith Briggs was lurking just behind him and was in no mood to follow, wrestling the lead away on lap 8 as Johnny Zackery slipped into the third spot.  Spencer fell to second, then spun on lap 12 moving Zackery up behind Briggs.

Most fans probably thought that would be the end of it, but Keith Briggs slid sideways at the top of turn 4 and limped into the pit area, leaving Zackery as the race leader.  But the race was not over yet, and Zackery fell victim to a flat tire as the caution flew for Blake Spencer’s motor expiring on lap 13.  Zackery would make the quick change in the pits and return to the rear of the field with six laps remaining, but Paul Combast was now in front and looked to remain there.

Paul Combast held on and avoided the lead car curse to win the race, followed by Nick Kerr in the second spot.  Johnny Zackery battled back to third place, followed by Dan Kerr and Michael Oglesby for fourth and fifth.

The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks took the green with Brian Jerrels on the pole, but Dean Jarvis wound up the early leader and looked tough in the opening laps.  But Daniel Miller had the 99 machine hooked up and ready, and began a multi lap tussle for the lead on lap 4 with Jarvis that lasted for four laps.  Miller grabbed the lead for good at that point and left the others to fight over second place.

Heath Walker did just that, slipping under Jarvis in an attempt to grab second from him.  But contact between the two would cause Jarvis to spin and sent Walker to the pits with a flat tire, as Joe Boyd now assumed the second spot.  Daniel Miller scored a convincing victory as Joe Boyd pursued him for second place.  Dean Jarvis settled for third while Heath Walker finished fourth, and Sean Babcock stayed out of the fray and grabbed a fifth place finish.

Fans have come to recognize the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks as the most competitive division at Ocala Speedway, as a host of talented racers are almost always in contention for a win.  The only problem is that at the same time, the Thunder Stocks also are known for muscling their way around the track, so contenders are sometimes fighting for survival as much as for a win.

Jerrid Bennett had the pole and the early lead, but lost it on lap 4 as Mike Stalnaker made the pass on the backstretch.  Bennett slipped out of the top five as James Erickson, Jason Gamble, and Chris Fontaine, all made their way in.  Jason Gamble would later spin on lap 8, but recover to climb back into the front pack yet again by lap 12.

Mike Stalnaker had the car to beat on the night, and no one else had an answer for it as he cruised to a victory yet again.  James Erickson drove an aggressive race to place second while Chris Fontaine grabbed the third spot.  Jerrid Bennett salvaged a fourth place finish while Jason Gamble overcame his troubles to round out the top five.

Colortyme Rent-To-Own Night comes to Ocala Speedway on Friday, April 16th, featuring the 2010 debut of the Colortyme Open Wheel Modified Division in their $1500 to win Spring Fling.  Ocala’s Sportsman Division will also debut, and fans will see action from the Tee Pee Tire Hobby stocks and the Gladiators as well.  Fans can also enter the $5 raffle for a Colortyme big screen TV to be given away.  Grandstand gates will open at 5PM with racing at 8PM, and for pricing and more info please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

Florida’s Own Controlling the UMP DIRTcar National Rankings Early

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL-  As the national dirt racing scene awakens from winter hibernation, the UMP DIRTcar National rankings have a very familiar look to them from a Florida standpoint.  That is because several local racers from Volusia Speedway Park, and from across the state of Florida, have firmly placed themselves in prominent positions and are far ahead of the competition across the nation.

Of course the racing season begins quite early in Florida as the climate allows the racers here to “jump the start” on racers to the north.  Florida drivers are turning laps and racking up points while northern racers are busy prepping for their seasons and watching the snow melt off of the clay at their local tracks.  So with the advantage of a quick start the Florida contingent can set the pace and take control early and make the competition play catch up, which is exactly what many of them have done.

In the UMP DIRTcar Factory Stock National rankings (known as Thunder Stock at VSP) there are seven local racers currently dominating the top eight positions.  Scott Mooers tops the list with 282 points, followed in second place nationally by his VSP nemesis, Randy Strehle, with 225 points.  Donnie Nobles has 200 points to rank third, while Courtney Eubanks, Richard Calmes Jr, Wally Douglass, and Luke Sadler, all are ranked as well.

There are four late model racers from the area in the national top ten of the UMP DIRTcar Late Model rankings, with none other than David Clegg leading the locals in third place with 275 points.  That puts Clegg just in front of Shane Williams with 263, and Dillon Wood with 254.  Also in the top ten is Joe Kump, occupying the ninth spot nationally by sporting 238 points.

Shawn Kosier may be dominating the 4 Cylinder Challengers at Volusia Speedway Park, but the UMP DIRTcar national rankings show R.J. Glaser in front of Kosier in the fourth spot with 262 points.  Shawn Kosier is ranked sixth nationally with 234 points, followed closely in seventh place by Casey Feaster with 225.  Nick Kerr holds the ninth spot in the national rankings.

Volusia Speedway Park regulars hold most of the top ten positions in the UMP DIRTcar Sportsman National rankings, with the top four all racing at VSP.  Aaron Barsness shares the national lead with Shaun Daugherty as both have 336 points, and they are followed by Matt McGillvary with 284 and Drew Smith with 266.  The Sheads also have firm spots in the top ten nationally as Paul has the sixth spot and Steve occupies the eighth position.

The UMP DIRTcar Stock Car (Street Stock at VSP) National rankings are practically all Florida racers, with the exception of one insurgent from outside of the Sunshine State that sneaked into the eighth place.  Trevor Gamble is in control, holding the top spot nationally with 302 points.  Tim Hughes and Jody Wells round out the top three, while Phillip Brown, Mike Eubanks, Mark Maresca, and Patrick Williams, hold down the rest of the top seven.  Mick Kulak is in the ninth spot followed by Bubba Christian in tenth place nationally.

The one UMP Division where the Florida racers have not taken a solid stand is the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds.  Just one Florida driver holds a top ten spot, that being Jeff Mathews in the third spot with 477 points.  Then again, Modified racers have lost a number of scheduled races to the weather early this season in Florida, and have yet to take a green flag at Florida’s Ocala Speedway due to wet conditions.  The loss of opportunities to race translates into a lack of points accumulated, and contributes to far fewer racers showing up in the national points standings.

As racing begins at tracks farther toward the north it will become far harder for the Florida racers to hold onto the spotlight in the UMP DIRTcar National Rankings.  More tracks are beginning their seasons weekly as the milder weather heads northward, and more names and numbers are beginning to creep up and into the rankings.  Volusia Speedway Park applauds all of the Florida racers for the exceptional showing thus far, and wishes them the best in maintaining superiority throughout the 2010 racing season.

SCHOOL BUS FIGURE EIGHTS THIS SATURDAY NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Wild and crazy School Bus Figure Eight racing returns to Auburndale Speedway this Saturday night along with the Modified Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Mini Stocks, Legend Cars, Scamblers and Bandoleros.

The School buses are always popular with the fans and expect yet another wacky run from the drivers as they negotiated the “X” in the infield. Gary Swing will be back to defend his win earlier this year.

The Modified Mini Stocks put on one of the best races of the year a couple of weeks ago and will be back in action again this week. Despite being nipped at the line for the win by Burt Morse, Scotty Sharpe has taken over the point lead by just two markers over Jason Rendell. Both are well ahead of third place Dennis Jones.

Jeff Waterman has re-taken the Street Stock point lead after a hard crash sent Matt McCrary to the sidelines in last weeks feature. Waterman is four points in front of McCrary going into this weeks action. Dave Colpritt took his second win of the year last week and has moved to third in points, some 50 tallies behind McCrary.

Josh Borem continues to turn in stout performances each week in the V-8 Bombers and that has him still comfortably ahead of second place Buddy Phillips, Jr. by 46 points right now.

For the first time this year, defending class champion Fred Harrison, Jr. is on top of the Mini Stock point battle, but just two ahead of Chris Spring. Harrison won his third race of the year last Saturday night. Chris Narramore, Sr. is third, 18 points behind Spring.

Despite seeing his win streak broken last week, “No Brake” Jake Perkins still has an eight point advantage over Gerald White, Jr. Justin Brown, who made a controversial pass on the last lap to win last week is third in points.

Kim Gullett still has a good advantage in the Scrambler class leading by 40 markers over second place Brian Tyre. Chad Cutting’s win on Saturday moved him to fourth in the current run-down but he’s 58 points behind Gullett.

Pit gates open at 2PM, grandstand gates open at 5PM and racing begins at 7PM.

NOTES:

Bandolero points are not shown in this weeks report due to some confusion over the ages of some of the drivers and the class they run in. All Bandolero race cars are the same. They are a spec series race car built by INEX in Charlotte, NC and powered by a sealed Briggs & Stratton engine. The classes are determined by the age of the driver. “Bandits” are age 8-11, “Young Guns” are age 12-15 and “Outlaws are drivers age 16 and above.

Cars are available, both new and used, from Legends Cars of Florida which is headed up by Russ Thomson of Orlando. Russ also has special classes and “test drives” available where kids (and their parents) interested in racing in a Bandolero can test one out at Auburndale Speedway to see if they like it. You can reach Thomson at (407) 873-0546. Test rides for drivers interested in Legend Car racing are also available. For more information, you can visit www.legendscarsofflorida.com.

Good to see Marilyn McCrary back racing after a bit of a hiatus. Her new Mini Stock is very sharp and should be running up front once the “bugs” are worked out. The McCrary’s have a bit more to worry about this week as Matt’s car took a real beating last Saturday.

Another new twist was added last week for the fans. A fish bowl is now located each Saturday night at the peanut stand. Fans can drop their business card from their place of business (or where they work) in the fish bowl each race night. At the end of intermission, one card is drawn and that lucky individual gets six passes to the races. It’s hoped that the winners will give those passes to their customer/clients/friends who have never been to Auburndale Speedway so they can “check us out.”

Thanks to the race fans, Lindsey’s Little Racers have collected enough cash to purchase four more bicycles to give away to the kids as part of their on-going program. Bike give-aways are now scheduled for April 17th and May 1st.

The upcoming Late Model race on April 17th is attracting a lot of attention as it appears there could be over 30 cars looking for the top prize of $3,000.

Former Sunbelt and Brighthouse Series champion Tim Russell says he’ll be there and others indicating they’ll be in action are 2009 Orlando SpeedWorld champion Jared Allison, NASCAR Truck Series racer Chris Fontaine, Tyler Laing, David Rogers, Jason Vail, Ron Lofquist, Joe Winchell, Tuffy Hester, Raymond & Perry Lovelady, Jonathan Guy, Daryl Shelnut, David Weaver and many others.

Of course, Jeff Scofield will be looking for another dominating performance like he had in the FAST Tour race last month following a disappointing trip to Hickory, NC last week. It’s not yet known if Wayne Anderson plans to show up for another round of racing against arch rival Kevin “The Bulldozer” Ingram.

Announcer Dave Westerman is looking for old photos from Winter Haven/Auburndale Speedway for his website www.floridaracinghistory.com. Pictures needed are primarily from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s and can also include photos from other Lakeland-area tracks like Silver Dollar Speedway and the Lakeland Interstate Speedway quarter mile track. Any photos that have already been scanned can be sent to announcerdave@usa.net. Please include the photographers name if it is known.

Speaking of old photos, copies of Eddie Roche’s book “Florida Motorsports Retrospective” are available while they last at Auburndale Speedway. The book, dedicated to the late Florida racing photographer Bobby 5X5 Day, contains over 1,500 photos from tracks all over Florida dating back as early as the 1930s along with Forewards written by racing legends Red Farmer and Don Garlits. Copies are $40.00 each and well worth the price. Just see announcer Dave Westerman or stop by the D&C Diecast souvenir booth.
