Schmauss Credited with Win in Racecar Engineering Late Models

04/24/2010

It was another awesome night for racing at the Clay by the Bay as over 100 cars hit the track for the six classes of racing with a twist.  Last week two feature events were rained out when the skies opened up for a second time after a rain delay and rendered the track lost for the evening.  Fans always know that they will get their money’s worth at East Bay Raceway Park, so when the bad weather cancelled the The Racecar Engineering Late Models and Outlaw 4’s feature events last week the solution was simple for the management at East Bay, they decided to run double features for those classes this week.

The Race Car Engineering Late Models and Outlaw 4 make up feature events were sandwiched into the pre intermission portion of the race program.  In the Late Models Jack Nosbisch, Jr. dominated the early laps until a muffler fell of his car disqualifying him from the event.  The beneficiary of that was Josh Peacock as he took the lead and held on for the win.  The feature win was his 3rd of the season.  Philip Cobb started 5th and finished 2nd.  David Schmauss had a strong run and came home third.  David Pollen and Frankie Erskine, Jr. rounded out the top-5.

Then in the completion of the Outlaw 4’s feature event Billy Howard took the win, which was his second in a row.  Matthew Haynes started 2nd and finished 2nd.  Keith Heard came home 3rd.  Stephen Holhbaugh and Chris Zimmerman rounded out the top-5.

The regular feature program began with the Limited Late Models hitting the track for their 15 lap feature event.  Tim Gay started in the 5th position and had the car to beat.  Early on in the event Philip Cobb appeared to be in control but his car was taken to the garage with a mechanical problem.  Gay was the beneficiary of Cobb’s trouble and wound up in victory lane for his first win of the season.  JR Prather Jr. finished 2nd.  Alex Boerner started 6th and finished 3rd.  John Bradley and Forrest Gough rounded out the top-5.  Dan Darnell and Boerner won the heats.

The Street Stocks were up next and did not disappoint as Thomas Pratt started on the pole and led the caution filled main event from start to finish.  The win was Pratt’s second of the year.  Jeff Rodgers started 8th and had a strong run finished 2nd.  Buck Woodhouse ran in the top-5 all night long and finished 3rd.  Jarod Gay and Eric Moon rounded out the top-5.  Reed, James Hook, and Buck Woodhouse were victorious in the heat events.

Another great field of Old Time Mods was on hand for their 12 lap feature event that saw an exciting battle between Lars Amundsen and Tommy Zwally as the laps wound down.  Lars Amundsen took the slim victory over Zwally.  Zwally finished 2nd.  Bobby Bush finished 3rd.  George Hall and Jamie Frankland rounded out the top-5.

The Race Car Engineering Late Models were back on the track for the second time of the evening with their 25 lap main event as twenty five cars took the green flag.  David Schmauss started on the pole and lead every lap until a late restart.  On the restart Bryan Bernhardt was able to gain position on Schmauss as he made the pass on the outside lane in turn 4.  Berhhardt appeared to have his first feature win of the season but was declared to be too heavy in post race technical inspection.  Schmauss was credited with the win.  Travis Varnadore ran in the top-3 all night and finished 2nd.  Roger Crouse started 6th and finished 3rd.  Ted Erskine picked up his first top-5 of the season with a 4th place finish. Philip Cobb rounded out the top-5. Schmauss, T. Varnadore and David Pollen won the heats.

The regularly scheduled Outlaw 4 feature event saw a great race between first and second in the points standings.  Billy Howard and Haynes battled for the early laps before Howard slipped to the middle of the pack.  Haynes was able to take the win which was his third of the season.  Chris Zimmerman finished 2nd.  Amanda Rogers started 5th and finished 3rd.  Charlies Staats had a good run and wound up with a 4th place finish.  Travis Staats started shot gun on the field and was able to finish 5th.

DB Hogwaller won the wet and wild Dirt Dauber event in exciting fashion.

ASA Sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, May 1, 2010 with May Madness.  The Racecar Engineering Late Models, Limited Late Models, Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, and Street Stocks will all be in action. There will also be the Fan Participation Races at the intermission.  For more information go to www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office.

Russell tops Billie Harvey Memorial 100 at NSS

Story by Godwin Kelly – Daytona News Journal Sports Editor

SAMSULA — Tim Russell, who started fourth in the 26-car field, led almost every lap to win Saturday’s caution-filled Billie Harvey 100 Super Late Model feature at New Smyrna Speedway.

Sam Watts finished second followed by Ben Kennedy in his No. 96 Chevrolet, who raced side-by-side with Rich Clouser.

Russell has won five consecutive FASCAR Triple Crown races, including last year’s Billie Harvey 100.

“We had an awesome car,” Russell said. “It’s pretty cool to win this race. My dad said Billie Harvey would give the shirt off his back.”

It was a wild race with six cautions, two red flags and one serious hissy fit.

The first green flag set the tone for the night. It took three tries to start the 100-lap race over the fast, half-mile oval. There was action on the first lap when the No. 34 of Shaughn McCormick spun on the front stretch as the green flag was displayed.

On the next restart, there was a four-car pileup on the backstretch that forced a red-flag to clean up the mess. The red flag lasted about 15 minutes.

When the cars came to a stop, Matthew Stichmann emerged from his battered machine and started jumping up and down on the hood of the No. 14 entry driven by Mario Maresca.

Stichmann then bounded off the Maresca’s machine and started kicking it and punching the sheet metal with his fist. Stichmann tried to throw a punch at Maresca through the driver’s side window before he was restrained by track officials. FASCAR told Stichmann to pack up and head home.

When the race started, just after 10 p.m., it quickly became a two-car battle between short-track aces Russell and Wayne Anderson. But Anderson wiped out with 20 laps to go.

The third yellow flag was waved on Lap 10 when Mike Finn slammed the wall in Turn 2. The race went back to green on Lap 17, with Russell and Anderson continuing their side-by-side battle.

The fourth caution came out for Mario Gosselin, who slapped the wall hard in Turn 4 on Lap 60. The right side of Gosselin’s No. 61 car was pancaked, but the driver was reported unharmed.

Gosselin’s machine leaked so much fluid on the track, FASCAR officials had to red-flag the race a second time for extensive cleanup.

Whitener Holds Off Nobles For Ocala Late Model Win

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media
(All Photos Courtesy of rewingphotos.com)

OCALA, FL- Another near perfect night of springtime Florida weather greeted the fans and racers at the historic Ocala Speedway on Friday night, as four divisions took their turns on the toughest 3/8ths mile in the southeast.  And tough it was, because quite a few racers will have plenty of work to do over the next couple of weeks to get their machines back in shape for the next round of racing at Ocala.  But despite many spins and quite a bit of contact, the racing was exciting and the fans got everything that they came for and more.

When Ocala’s Mini Stock Division hit the clay Keith Briggs was watching from the turn one bleachers.  Briggs had looked strong in winning his earlier heat race, but an oil pressure and overheating issue had the 19T parked in the pits for the feature race instead of on the track.  Dan Kerr began from the pole and jumped out to an early lead, but Paul Combast took it from him on lap 4. And on the following lap a spin by Michael Ogelsby brought a caution, and on the restart Dan Kerr grabbed the lead back from Combast. (more…)

Owens Ready for Talladega Tonight

(TALLADEGA, Ala.) April 23, 2010 – Thursday’s practice and qualifying results have Alli Owens psyched for today’s main event at Talladega Superspeedway.

Owens qualified for today’s ARCA Series 250 in 11th-place. Owens rounded the high-banked 2.66-mile race track in 51.764 seconds (184.993 mph) on her qualifying lap, only .418 seconds slower than pole sitter Dakota Armstrong’s time.

“I’m really excited about today’s race,” said Owens. “The ElectrifyingCareers.com Chevy is awesome in race trim. We’ve got a pretty good starting spot, but that isn’t an indication of how good our car really is. It’s super-strong in the draft. It’s awesome in traffic. It has what it takes to get up front.

“I started last year from the back of the field and finished sixth, so I’m not really worried about our starting spot. I’m sure the leader is going to have to go from the back to the front more than once today. Most of my teammates are starting close by me. I know we’ll do everything we can to help each other and work together. Hopefully the five of us will keep each other at the front of the pack all day and be in position to fight for the win at the end.”

The race begins this afternoon at 5:00 EST. Coverage will be on SPEED.

Owens Excited to Return to Site of Career-Best Finish

CORNELIUS, N.C. (April 20, 2010) – Alli Owens is returning to the site of her career-best ARCA Series finish, Talladega Superspeedway.  Although many drivers fear the lightning-fast speeds associated with the 2.66-mile race track, Owens couldn’t be more excited about racing at the high-banked trioval.

Owens has a rich history with restrictor plate racing.  At Daytona International Speedway, Owens scored the outside pole for last season’s ARCA race, and ran inside the top-five for the majority of this year’s Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200. Owens left Talladega last season with a sixth-place finish and is confident her No. 15 team can improve on that in this year’s ARCA Racing Series 250.

Owens Comments on ARCA Racing Series 250:

“Talladega is a special place for Venturini Motorsports, just like Daytona. We’re really good at the superspeedways. After running third at Daytona for most of the race, going to the Talladega test and knowing that we have fast cars, I’m really excited about racing there.  I think my whole team is.

“I’ll have four other teammates, which is really cool. We practiced some bump drafting at the test earlier this year. That was the first time that I really had someone teach me and work with me on how it’s done. I’m looking forward to going back and utilizing what I’ve learned and applying it to the race.

“It’s a confident feeling knowing that our superspeedway program is so strong. At testing, we had five Venturini cars within a hundredth or so of each other. It shows the quality and preparation that goes into these cars to make them go as fast as they do. The coolest part is knowing that all of our cars have a shot to win the race. We might not have Cup support, but our equipment is as good as anyone’s out there.

“As far as strategy goes for the race, I’m looking forward to working with my teammates. Hopefully we’ll be strong enough to hang around the front throughout the race. You know, everybody says to stick on the yellow line all race long, but Frank Kimmell and I worked the outside groove and worked our way from the back to the front.  I might experiment with that again.  I know this year instead of finishing sixth, I’m looking for the win, so I’ll take whichever line gets me there the fastest.”

Dallas Troyer Wins The Magic 4 Feature Race at ASA Sanction Desoto Super Speedway

By Marty Little and Tom Blakeley

April 17, 2010

Bradenton Florida

The weather gods were looking over the oval track tonight.  There was rain to East, rain to the West, Rain to the South, and rain to the North.  But over the speedway was this “big ol” hole in the sky and while it drizzled a few times all the races were run to completion.  It was a special night for young Mr. Dallas Troyer in the silver bullet #01 car.  The quiet and mild mannered lad lit up the inner circle track and won the feature event in the Magic 4 class.  He did this after being sent to the back with only a few laps to go.  He drove a clean hard race and loved going to Victory Circle for the first time this year.  His fellow racers were as happy for him as his proud Mom and Dad.  It sure looks like there will be many wins in this talented drivers future, so watch out for Dallas Troyer.  Taking a close second place was Kyle Best in the black #3 car and Zac Campilonga in the #30 car drove to a great third place.  Zac also gave away another bicycle to a needy youngster at Intermission, this is Zac’s way of giving back.  The Magic 4 class is presented by Desoto Super Speedway as a driver development class for ages 12 to 17 for both boys and girls.  The Magic 4’s are a crowd favorite.

The Flyin 4’s just started as a class last year towards the end of the season and it has quickly grown and become a fan favorite.  There is some real talent behind the wheels, and some exciting racing going on.  Randy Johnson who was a Pure Stock Champion back a couple years ago has once again proven his skills and can be a dominating force in this class.  The only problem for that is little miss Brittany Barr who was the Magic 4 Champion last year and Miss Jessica Ostrovskis also a former Magic 4 Champion.  These two adorable ladies will be giving Randy Johnson all the competition he ever imagined;  all year.  They almost ran Johnson down tonight,  but he prevailed and took first place in the #73 car.  Brittany Barr in the black #81 car was second and Jessica Ostrovskis in the pink bullet #91 won a terrific third.  What a great show it was.

Street Stocks.  The Street Stock class is coming back with a vengeance. Duane Best in car #3 won tonight’s feature race in a car he never drove before and was brand new to him.  Jonathan Heidenthal in the #27 car took second after starting in the rear and driving a great race. Derek Lucas in the orange #88 car took a terrific third.

Trophy Dash.  This year’s newest class and wild and crazy doesn’t get close to describing it.  From antlers on roofs to police lights, no yellow flags and drivers looking to wreck makes this one whacky event.  It is not about the money for these guys as they drive for the trophy only.

TBARA Sprints

Veteran Sonny Hartley drove around Tommy Nichols on lap 16 and sped to his first TBARA feature victory in several seasons in Saturday night’s 30 lap sprint car headliner at DeSoto Super Speedway.

Things got off to a rough start in the feature when outside front row starter Dakotah Stephens broke an axle and spun in front of the field on the first lap. The ensuing melee took out point leader Shane Butler, Dude Teate, Troy DeCaire and Stephens.

When the green waved following the clean up it was pole sitter Steve Heisler out front with Hartley, Tommy Nichols and Johnny Gilbertson in tow. Nichols quickly worked around Hartley for second but a caution waved on lap five when leader Heisler looped his mount to put Nichols in front over Hartley.

The field reformed and it was Nichols the point man but Hartley was on his game this night and kept the pressure on before making a pass for the lead on lap 16. Once in front it was no contest as Hartley motored away until a yellow waved for debris on lap 28. The offending trash was removed from the racing surface and Hartley never looked back, taking his No. 27 to the checkers ahead of Nichols, Larry Brazil, Jr., Bo Hartley and Ben Fritz.

Heat race victories went to DeCaire and Gilbertson.

Feature finish (30 laps) – 1. Sonny Hartley, 2. Tommy Nichols, 3. Larry Brazil, Jr. 4. Bo Hartley, 5. Ben Fritz,

6. Johnny Gilbertson, 7.David Retzlaff, 8. Steve Heisler, 9. Larry Brazil, 10. D.J. Hoelzle, 11. Dakotah Stephens, 12.Troy DeCaire, 13. Dude Teate, 14. Shane Butler, 15. Joey Aguilar DNS

Wild Ride for Owens at Texas

FORT WORTH, Tx. (April 16, 2010) –Alli Owens looked well on her way to capturing her second-straight top-10 finish in Friday’s Rattlesnake 150 at Texas Motor Speedway. Unfortunately, Owens’ performance was cut short. A spin through the grass, compounded by an issue with the No. 15 car’s battery, forced Owens to retire early the event.  Owens finished in 24th-place.

Thursday afternoon’s qualifying session was rained out. The field was set according to last season’s owner point standings, which put Owens 25th on the starting grid. When the race got underway, it didn’t take long for Owens to work her way to the front.  She moved into 12th-place by lap 25 and was running equivalent times to the leaders.

On lap 26, the ElectrifyingCareers.com Chevy suddenly broke free exiting Turn 4 and caused Owens to take an unexpected detour through the Texas Motor Speedway lawn. Owens made a terrific save and prevented it from hitting the wall.  She returned to the track, but her tires were flat-spotted and the fenders accrued damage that needed repairing.   She brought her car to the attention of her crew on the next lap, where they pulled the fenders away from the tires and changed her Hoosiers. She returned to the track two laps down.

Owens’ Venturini Motorsports crew continued to try and improve the handling of her race car and put her in position for the Lucky Dog pass.  Unfortunately their efforts were preempted on lap 87. Owens’ car lost power without warning and coasted to a stop.  The culprit was being evaluated after the race, but the team’s initial belief was that the rough ride through the grass caused a wire to come loose and short out the power source.   The ElectrifyingCareers.com team pushed the car to the garage for the remainder of the 100 lap event. She finished in 24th-place.

“My car’s balance was a little off when I started the race.  I was waiting for our first pit stop before I got more aggressive with the throttle.  I know Jeff (McClure, crew chief) would make the right adjustments and get me fixed up. While I was biding my time, my car just snapped loose. It was a crazy ride. I went skidding through the grass.  Unfortunately it jarred a few of our wires loose.  I think it caused our battery to short out.  I’m really proud of my guys for never giving up.  Even after I spun, Jeff (McClure) kept making improvements to the handling.  We stood a good chance of finishing in the top-20 until I lost power.”

Owens’ next race is the ARCA Racing Series 250 at Talladega Superspeedway on April 23. Coverage can be seen on SPEED.

OPEN WHEEL MODIFIEDS BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEKEND AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Action continues to heat up at Auburndale Speedway as the Open Wheel Modifieds return for the first of back-to-back racing weekends for the popular class.

The Modified Mini Stocks will also be on the slate along with the Street Stocks, Legend Cars, Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Scramblers and Bandoleros.

Three Open Wheel Modified races are in the books so far this year and there have been three different winners. Kevin Macy, who won the last race, is on top of the current point standings but by just four points over steady Wayne Morris. Morris is only two markers ahead of third place Harold Cannon and Cannon has just a one point edge over fourth place Keith Lilley. In fact, the top eight drivers are separated by only 30 points right now.

Despite winning the last two races, Burt Morse is in third spot in the Modified Mini Stock points, 48 behind leader Jason Rendell as Morse missed being part of the action during the division’s second week of competition. Rendell has just a two point advantage over Scotty Sharpe heading into this weeks race.

On the heels of back-to-back feature wins, Gerald White, Jr. has taken over the lead in Legend Car points by 22 over Jake Perkins and Justin Brown who are tied for second. Dave Gleason is fifth in the overall standings but heads the Master’s Division for drivers age 40 and over.

As the Street Stocks get back in the swing of things this week it’s Jeff Waterman now with a bit of “breathing room” at the top of the points list. Waterman is 24 markers in front of Matt McCrary while McCrary has a 38 point bulge over third place Dave Colpritt.

Fred Harrison, Jr. has been on a roll in the Mini Stocks and has seen his point lead swell to 16 over second place Chris Spring as he tries to defend his 2009 class championship. Chris Narramore, Sr. is in third six points back of Spring.

Josh Borem continues to put together solid finishes each week in the V-8 Bombers as he continues to hold a comfortable 54 point edge over his nearest rival, Buddy Phillips, Jr.

Kim Gullett continues to stay on top of the Scrambler point chase but has seen Brian Tyre close to within eight tallies. Solid finishes over the past few weeks, including a win, have propelled Chad Cutting up to third in Scrambler points.

In the Bandoleros, Cameron White has a huge advantage in the Bandit class while it’s much closer in the Outlaws with Ryan Shattuck now just four points in front of Teddy Lively.

Saturday pit gates open at 2PM, grandstand gates open at 5PM and racing gets under way at 7PM.

NOTES:

Due to a scheduling conflict, Auburndale Speedway has moved the next Late Model race originally scheduled for May 15th to the following Saturday, May

22nd. The AMF Chassis/Chassis Works 100 is expected to be even bigger than this past weeks outstanding event that saw Longwood’s Tim Russell take home the $3000 top prize.

Auburndale Speedway saw its biggest crowd in quite some time last week as the fans came out in droves to see some outstanding racing. One lucky lady carried home a record 50/50 raffle take of $549.50!!! Also thanks to Hurricane Bar & Grill in Winter Haven for donating ten $25 gift certificates as raffle prizes.

As the kids came through the breezeway last Saturday, they were surprised to see not two, but four bicycles that were to be given away as part of the “Lindsey’s Little Racers” program. Ronnie Simms of Becton/Simms Racing stepped up to the plate and bought two more bikes on Saturday afternoon. Enough money was raised during the weekly Linsey’s Little Racers raffle to buy two more bikes. The next bike giveaway will be on May 1st.

Speaking of Ronnie Simms, he put up an extra $150 to Mini Cup driver Sam Scott if Scott (the fast qualifier) could start at the tail end of the Mini Cup field and win the race. Simms just barely held on to his cash as Scott ended up finishing second to Harold Crooms in a caution-plagued race that saw the time limit expire. We can only speculate if Scott could have taken home the victory if the entire 25 laps could have been completed.

Mini Stock point leader Fred Harrison, Jr. could be earning himself a nickname as the “Ice Cream Man.” Every time Harrison has put up the money for the free ice cream prizes for the kids through Lindsey’s Little Racers, he’s won the Mini Stock feature!!

Make your plans to come to the race track early on May 1st as there will be a car show at the track from 1-5PM in support of the Fallen Firefighter Survivors Association. The event is part of “The Worlds Largest Poker Run”

presented by the Red Knights Motorcycle Club. All types of cars from Classics to Antiques to Muscle Cars are welcome. The cost is just $10 to enter and best of show prizes will be awarded. For more info contact redknightsfl10@msn.com.

To clarify the new classes for the Bandolero cars… There are now just two divisions based on the age of the driver. “Bandits” are age 8-12 and “Outlaws” are age 13 and above. For prospective Bandolero drivers (and their parents), test drives and racing schools are scheduled from time to time at Auburndale Speedway. For more information, contact Russ Thomson at (407) 873-0546.
