VSP Going “South of the Border” for Uno De Mayo on Saturday

by VSP MediaBARBERVILLE, FL- Volusia Speedway Park’s racers got a siesta last Saturday night, with the Budweiser Modifieds being the exception. But this Saturday it is back to racing as five divisions will celebrate “Uno De Mayo” on the south’s fastest half mile. While the adults enjoy the high speed action, the kids will have a chance to enjoy some pinata fun at intermission, and everyone can get $2 off of their admission ticket by wearing a sombrero to the track.

The Budweiser Modifieds were the only regular division that raced this past weekend at VSP, and once again Jamie Carter seized control and notched another win. Meanwhile Carter’s closest competition in the 2010 points race, Jeff Mathews, ended up pulling off of the track and did not finish, which allowed Carter to open up a 70 point pad between himself and “The Repo Man.” Larry Burkins continues to look strong and earned a second place finish the last time out, but trails Carter by 93 points in the third spot this season.

David Clegg continues to hold the 2010 points lead as the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models return to action this weekend, as two weeks ago Clegg finished in the third spot behind Dillon Wood and Brandon Dewitt. That leaves Clegg 65 points in front of Joe Kump for the year so far, but allowed Wood to close the gap a little as he holds the fourth spot at 93 points in back of Clegg. Kump knows that he needs to close the gap between himself and Clegg and that his seventh place finish on April 17th will not get the job done. So look for Joe Kump to turn the wick up a bit this Saturday night and for David Clegg to work to extend his lead.

Shaun Daugharty and Aaron Barsness finished first and second in the last outing for the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division at VSP, which puts the two of them in a dead heat at the top of the season points standings. Matt McGillivray earned a fourth place finish on April 17th, which leaves him 57 points in back of the first place tie. But McGillivray might want to keep an eye behind him, as Steve Shead is just a single point shy of tying him, and two points short of replacing him behind the leaders. Paul Shead and Drew Smith are also in that hunt, at 63 and 66 points out of first place.

Two weeks ago the finish of the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks was in question until well into the wee hours of the morning, as race winner Trevor Gamble’s car faced a tear down by tech officials. If Gamble was nervous going into the tech shed he certainly did not show it, and his confidence was justified as the car was found to be legal. Gamble may be tearing up the competition as of late, but Phillip Brown maintains a 12 point advantage over him in the season points race, while Tim Hughes is a point in back of Gamble. With the race for the championship this close, a mistake by any of the top racers could spell trouble, so this weekend’s race will be a white knuckle affair.

Early in the racing season it looked like Shawn Kosier might totally take charge of Volusia’s Challenger Division, but then Casey Feaster jumped behind the wheel of a Ford Focus and began making noise, and as of this past weekend Feaster is three for three between VSP and Ocala Speedway, with one win at Ocala erased by a DQ. Feaster will be going for two in a row at Volusia this Saturday, but he remains 58 points shy of first place and 11 points shy of RJ Glaser in the second spot. And while Feaster was winning last time out, Shawn Kosier was struggling after a heat race incident left him with a crippled race car. With a little help from his friends after the heat race disaster, Kosier came from dead last in the feature to claim a fourth place finish despite a badly bent wheel, so he remains on top of the season points standings and is still Casey Feaster’s target as he climbs the points ladder.

Fans can enter the grandstand gates at 5:30 PM this Saturday night, and “south of the border” dress is welcomed. And remember, fans wearing sombreros will be admitted at a $2 discount! Fluke Engine Problem Ruins Owens’ Day at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 25, 2010) – Alli Owens’ efforts to improve on last season’s sixth-place performance at Talladega Superspeedway went up in smoke midway through the ARCA 250. After running inside the top-10 for the majority of the event, the No. 15 ElectrifyingCareers.com Chevy with support from IBEW Local Union 136 lost power and left Owens unable to finish the event. Owens finished a disappointing 32^nd-place.

Owens’ game plan was simple – stick to the yellow line and move to the front one position at a time. The strategy couldn’t have worked any better. Owens climbed from 11^th-place starting position into sixth-place before relinquishing her position to pit lap 24. The ElectrifyingCareers.com Chevy was tight exiting the corners, so crew chief Jeff McClure called for a wedge adjustment, in addition to a routine four-tire stop. Following service Owens returned to the track in 22^nd-place.

Back on the track, Owens picked up where she left off. She shot into 17^th-place on lap 38 and showed no signs of slowing down. On lap 40, without warning, Owens’ car lost power. She coasted into the pits, where her crew lifted the hood and did a preliminary inspection of the engine. The examination revealed that a tube leading to the evaporation chamber had cracked and allowed the water to drain from the radiator. Unfortunately the damage was terminal and Owens had to retire early from the event.

“It’s a shame that we couldn’t finish the event because our car was really good today,” said Owens. “I was just taking my time, not really pushing it too hard. I was waiting until the last few laps of the race before I started to become more aggressive. Unfortunately our engine let go. It was such a freak thing that happened. I’ve never seen one of those tubes break like that before. I guess that’s just our luck. I’m really proud of my team for all the hard work they put into this weekend. It’s too bad that we didn’t get a better finish that reflects how good this car really was. We won’t let this keep us down. Venturini Motorsports prepares great cars week-in and week-out and we’ll get ‘em next race.”

KYLE BOOKMILLER HOLDS OFF FIELD FOR SECOND OWM WIN OF THE YEAR AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

The warmest weather of the season greeted fans and competitors alike Saturday evening at Auburndale Speedway and the racing was just as hot as well.

The Open Wheel Modifieds returned with seventeen racers in attendance to duke it out for the $1,000 first place prize. Kyle Bookmiller and Big Wayne Morris split the heat race wins and had the front row for the 40 lap feature event.

The first attempt at getting the race started was nullified when Doc McKinney and Rick Coffin made contact coming down the home stretch with Coffin tagging the wall. The damage to Coffin’s mount was too much and he went off on the hook while McKinney restarted.

Bookmiller grabbed the early advantage as Morris tried hard to make the tough outside line work. But before he could finally get in line, Morris was back several positions as Bookmiller settled into the lead with a host of heavy-hitters behind him. Caution was out early on lap two as Travis Rowland spun in turn three. On the ensuing restart, McKinney locked horns with Jimmy Wilkins and the two came to a stop at the top of turn four. This time it was McKinney who was unable to continue.

Bookmiller continued to set the pace but already it was evident that his engine was not at peak performance as there was plenty of “popping” from his exhaust. James Wilkins was putting the pressure on for the lead but slipped high on lap ten allowing James Wright III to slip into second.

Lap 20 saw the final caution right at mid race as Rowland and Jerry Artuso tangled in turn three. Rowland pulled off the track and called it a night.

From that point Bookmiller, battling his balky power plant, had to pull out all the stops to hold off Wright, whose car was running extremely hot. Wilkins remained in the thick of things staying right on Wright’s bumper as Kevin Macy and Morris moved up to challenge.

Bookmiller kept his car buried on the low side of the track as Wright threw out all the stops but was never able to make the pass aftraid if he slipped trying to make a move in the high groove he’d be “freight-trained.”

Bookmiller held on for his second win of the year trailed by Wright III, James Wilkins, Macy and Morris. Wright was none too happy in victory lane as he emerged from his car (which was leaking water like a geyser) accusing Bookmiller of “mirror driving” although the two shook hands after a brief discussion. The winner was both happy and apologetic in victory lane saying he “did what he needed to do” and that he was giving Wright plenty of room on the outside.

Third place finisher James Wilkins was more than pleased with finishing in the show spot. The 68-years-young driver, in a 26 year old race car, said his car was working good in the outside lane but “it just doesn’t have the straightaway speed to stay up with these other guys.”

Rounding out the top ten were Shawn Harper, Colin Cabre, Billy Bechtelheimer, David Grogan and Keith Lilley. So close were the cars in the race that, even though the final 20 laps were run under green, no one was even close to being lapped.

Lee Davis had a tough night with his new car in the Modified Mini Stocks. Davis never made a lap in the heat race as the car quit before the start and had to be pushed off the race track. Mike Sweet won the heat race and grabbed the feature race lead only to be punted into a spin by Burt Morse who was going for three feature wins in a row.

With Morse going to the rear of the restart line-up, Davis got a new lease on life as he quickly disposed of Sweet and was running away in the lead until his car suddenly shut off with a handful of laps left and he coasted into the infield.

Sweet re-claimed the front position and raced to his first win of the year in style over Jason Rendell and Scotty Sharpe. Rendell’s car was set down in tech however, moving Sharpe up to second in the final running order while Morse recovered for third. Bruce Anderson and Dennis Jones completed the front five. Point leader Fred Harrison, Jr. spun out during the Mini Stock heat race but got lucky when heat race winner Chris Narramore, Sr. had to pit before the start of the race, joining Harrison in the rear of the starting line-up instead of on the pole.

Donnie Guy set the early pace in the feature as the rest of the field duked it out behind him. Harrison sliced and diced his way to the front, taking the top spot away from Guy on lap eight and raced his way to his fifth win of the year. Guy held off the advances of Chris Spring and Narramore to grab second.
Fifth spot went to Kevin Steadman.

Make it a hat trick for Gerald White, Jr. as he won his third straight Legend Car feature. Jake Perkins and Mason Ketterman split the heat race wins and it was Perkins who set the early pace in the feature before White blasted past on lap three and never looked back. Justin Brown zipped up to second by the time the checker fell but was only within shouting distance of White. Ketterman took third while Perkins faded to fourth just ahead of newcomer Tyler Schule who was impressive scoring a top five in his initial start here.

Zach Napoleon, John Inman, Lynn Wiles, Bryan Silas and Dakota Baggett completed the top ten.

Sporting a new “camouflage” paint scheme on his car, point leader Jeff Waterman held off an impressive group of Street Stocks to claim his second win of the year. Dave Colpritt made sure Waterman knew he was there but had to settle for the runner-up spot trailed by Matt McCrary, Bobby Mobley and Eddie Hartin. Waterman and Colpritt split the heat race wins.

The tech shed was not kind to the V-8 Bomber class once again. David Fletcher led the first five laps of the feature before Brandon Duchscherer zoomed by to take an apparent win.

However, both Duchscherer and Fletcher were set down for weight infractions handing the win to Buddy Phillips, Jr., his first of 2010. Jason Howell would have finished second, but his car was also too light over the scales. Tav Gary was the only other car still running and his car did pass tech awarding him second place.

Point leader Josh Borem had mechanical troubles and dropped out of the feature but all the issues in tech still found him finishing third.

There was plenty of action to go around in the Scrambler class starting with plenty of bumpin’ and bangin’ in the heat race which waswon by point leader Kim Gullett. Gene Harrison actually passed Gullett on the final lap but was DQ’d for rough driving.

In the feature it was Ron Norman’s Ford Escort grabbing the top spot from Gullett and her Honda. Richie Acres had his Saturn on the move though. Driving with the passenger-side door missing after a heat race incident, Acres moved out front and stayed there to take the win. Norman would also eventually be another victim of the tech men as Richard Brown would take the checker in second followed by Brian Tyre, Matt Johns and William “Huggy Bear”
Hindman. Gullett wound up sixth.

The Bandolero feature was over before a lap could be completed. Only two cars showed up to race. Heat winner Derek Sobel made contact with Cameron White going down the back stretch in slid hard into the wall backwards. With his car too badly damaged to continue, Sobel was out and the win was subsequently awarded to White who refused to claim his accolades because he felt the accident was his fault.

Next week the Open Wheel Modifieds return for their second of back-to-back race nights. Also running will be the Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Scramblers, V-8 Bombers and Sportsman cars . Racing start at 7 PM.

Also on Saturday, Auburndale Speedway will be helping out with the World’s Largest Poker Run to benefit the Fallen Firefighter Survivors Foundation presented by the Red Knights Motorcycle Club. Tim Russell Wins Billie Harvey Memorial at New Smyrna

Samsula, FL (April 24, 2010) The fans and racers came out in force on Saturday night for the 3rd running of the annual Billie Harvey Memorial 100 for Super Late Models, but few could have anticipated the incredible race they would witness as the drivers came together to put on an instant classic out on the track. The big race would be set-up perfectly by an equally thrilling Pro Truck feature, as well as appearances by other local weekly divisions. But it was the big 100-lapper that had the crowds on their feet for a race that will still be talked about for months to come, and set a high standard for the rest of the season. (more…)

Danny Martin tops Top Gun Sprints at VSP

The Top Gun Sprints made their first visit of 2010 to Volusia Speedway Park on Saturday April 24, 2010. There were 22 cars at the track to give fans three heat races and a 25 lap feature race.

Harley Zimmerman in the 21Z car had the pole for the start of the first heat race. Matt took the lead on the start and led for 2 laps till his motor blew that put Amanda Ferguson in the 21A in the lead until 2 laps later she stopped on the front stretch with drive line broke. That put Ryan Partin in the 14 on the point and he took the win.

The 22 of Shawn Murray had the pole for the start of the second heat race with Gene Lasker in the 02 car on the outside. It was the 02 that made the better start and took the race lead and led from start to finish taking the heat win.

Tim George in the 1 car had the pole for the start of the third and final heat race, but it was Tommy Denton in the X coming from last to the lead and took the heat win.

The 02 of Gene Lasker had the pole for the start of the feature race event, with the 24 of Danny Martin alongside. After a parade lap, the race went to green and it was Gene Lasker in the 02 car that took the lead.

The first caution of the night came on lap 5 when the 8 car driven by Rich Alexander spun and stopped and the 30 of John Crowder slid into him in they were both took to infield, also Gene Lasker spun on the top to avoid crash was restarted and had to go to the rear. The race got back to green with Tommy Denton in the X in the lead, but only one lap later, the 83A of Christine Auld was re-fired, the race got back underway.

On the restart Tommy Denton led for 6 laps until the 24 of Danny Martin went around on the outside and never looked backed and took the checkered flag, followed by Tommy Denton in the X car was DQ in Tech, Ryan Partin in the 14 car, Gene Lasker in the 02 was DQ for not going to Tech and Shane Kreidler in the 52 car rounding out the top 5.

Rasslin Plus Racin Equals Excitement At Volu

BARBERVILLE, FL- Fans got twice the action for their admission price on Saturday night as “Rasslin and Racin” tag teamed everyone at Volusia Speedway Park. While the wrestling got an early start and excited the crowd until heat races began, the Top Gun Sprint Car Series, Florida Mini Sprint Association, and Volusia’s own Budweiser Modifieds, picked up where the wrestlers left off and kept the energy level high. And in addition to exciting racing and wild wrestling events, the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association turned out in full force with a museum load of racing history that can still go fast and turn left.

The Florida Wrestling Association got things going early as things got a little out of control. The American Freedom Fighter defeated The Russian Assassin in a “mask for mask” bout, but managed to allow the hated Russian to escape without removing his mask. J.C. Clark had two bouts, as he first defeated Barney Rumble in a scheduled bout, then lost to The Genius Lanny Poffo in a challenge match. And two sworn enemies, Wildman Brody and Rick the Reaper, teamed up in a “Bunkhouse Rules” tag team match against The Mulkey Brothers. The ensuing free-for-all resulted in everything that a wrestling fan could ask for with continuous action both in and out of the ring. In the end The Mulkey Brothers won the match, but escaped without compensating the host facility for multiple chairs that were broken over their opponents’ heads.

The only regular racing division on the card for Saturday’s action were the Budweiser Modifieds, which saw Garrett Stewart put his 67 machine on the pole after much toil and trouble, and control the early part of the race. But Jamie Carter had no concern over how much time, money, or effort, went into Stewart’s racing team, and he was all over the 67 from the opening laps, using the high side to stay all but side by side with Stewart for lap after lap. Directly behind Stewart and Carter another side by side battle erupted between Jeff Mathews and Larry Burkins over the second spot, which lasted until problems sidelined Mathews’ car on lap 7.

As Mathews made his exit, Jason Davis and Jimmy Carter both stepped up their games, moving into the top five and putting pressure on the leaders. Garrett Stewart began to fade under the strain as Jamie Carter assumed the lead and Larry Burkins climbed into second place, and as the laps wound down Burkins put all sorts of pressure on Jamie Carter but never managed to get the upper hand. Jamie Carter grabbed the win followed by Burkins in second place, and Jason Davis got past Stewart to claim the third spot. And while the 67 machine may have slipped a little late in the race, Garrett Stewart earned a very respectable fourth place finish and was followed by Jimmy Carter for fifth place.

Fans were excited to see if young Amanda Ferguson was a fluke or a find as the Top Gun Sprint Car Series hit the Barberville clay, but Ferguson ran into early mechanical issues during her heat race and was forced to retire for the night. That opened the door for the always exciting Gene Lasker to take control, and he put his 02 machine on the pole for the 25 lap feature race. Lasker never slows down, and failure to do so under caution early on proved costly as Lasker had to swerve to avoid a wrecked car in turn four, lost control, and backed hard into the turn four exit barrier. Lasker drove away from that incident but was penalized to the rear for failure to heed the caution flag and lights, then made huge progress toward rejoining the frontrunners, but was disqualified by top Gun Series officials after the race ended.

Lasker’s misfortune was Tommy Denton’s gain, as Denton assumed the lead. However, Danny Martin had his car hooked up for the track conditions, and he rocketed past Denton before lap 12 and began setting a pace that made the scorers sweat. Martin outclassed everything on the track, lapping cars all the way up to third place before the checkered flags put a stop to his progress. Ryan Partin also had a fast car and claimed the second spot, while Shane Kreidler followed in third place. Tony Agin and Mike Schroeder rounded out the top five finishers.

The idea of watching miniature sprint cars powered by motorcycle engines may send some less seasoned fans toward the exits, but those who have the knowledge to stay and watch the Florida Mini Sprints in action know that the little cars can scream around VSP’s fast half mile at around 130 miles per hour, and that their races are almost always competitive and exciting. 2009 Mini Sprint Champion Tim O’Donnell held the pole and led the 21 car field to the green flag, but not far behind him lurked his son, Brett O’Donnell, who has been aggressively building on last year’s Rookie of the Year honor, and who did not care if it is his dad that he had to beat in order to get it done. Steve Crabtree held the second spot early on as Eddie Moss Jr. and Jessie Teed joined the O’Donnells in a virtual lock on the top five positions. And right outside the top five was Rae Lynn Moss, who showed about the same amount of love for her dad, Eddie Moss Jr, as Brett O’Donnell was showing for his.

One of the casualties in a mid race mishap was Sheldon Kinser Jr, who ended up on his side in turn two but righted the car and drove away, then began sorting his way forward toward the top ten, eventually climbing to a seventh place finish. The caution flag got quite a bit of work during the race as various spins and contact slowed things down, but the periodic restarts also kept everyone within striking distance of each other, resulting in numerous position changes all through the field during the entire feature race, and keeping the excitement level high.

But thanks to the multiple slowdowns the race had to be shortened to 15 laps, and that set up a furious two lap sprint to the finish that had cars exchanging positions more than twice per lap. Final lap moves gave the win to Brett O’Donnell while Eddie Moss Jr. finished in second place, and Jessie Teed ratcheted up the heat on the final laps to nab third place. Tim O’Donnell was fourth and Steve Crabtree was fifth, as he managed to keep Rae Lynn Moss just out of the top five.

History buffs had their cameras clicking when the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association (DAARA) hit the track and raced their machines. Eric Orewiler of Hernando got a win in 1934 Hudson, and Dave Cash of Palm Coast raced his 1979 Gambler Sprint to the checkers as well. Lonnie Roberts, who is better known for his exploits in the National Late Model Series, drove a 1932 Ford modified sportsman to a win, and a three quarter midget built in 1975 and raced by Tony Stewart in his teenaged days, secured a victory for Lake Worth’s Jerry Paquin.
