Pepsi Wheel of Fortune to Debut at Ocala Speedway

by Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL- Fans and racers at Florida’s oldest race track will have a shot at getting a cash bonus this Friday night as Ocala Speedway presents the debut of Pepsi Wheel of Fortune Night.  A lucky fan will spin the wheel to determine who gets a hefty cash bonus from Pepsi, the official soft drinks of Ocala Speedway.  The cash could be distributed to one racing division, plus some lucky fans, depending on where the Pepsi Wheel of Fortune indicates.

Ocala Speedway’s Late Model Division is currently running in the shadow of champion racer and local favorite, Ivedent Lloyd Jr.  But Lloyd is sometimes lured away by major races in other locations, so his points lead is merely 2 over Mark Whitener.  Whitener drives for another local stable, wheeling the 58 Big Frog Motorsports, Dave’s Towing machine, within rock throwing distance from the speedway.  Just five points back stands Keith Nosbisch who has been strong in 2010, and Lake Helen’s Joe Kump is only 9 points behind Ivedent Lloyd.  With the race this close, a lot could change depending on who shows up on Friday night, and what transpires on the track.

With a week off to think about it, the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks will be back in action with an equally tight points race unfolding.  Jerrid Bennett of Palatka holds onto the points lead, but Ocala’s Michael Stalnaker is only 6 points shy and gaining fast as he continues his winning ways.  Stalnaker needs to watch his back as well, as Eddie Lentz is within two points of tying him for second, and Brian Shea is just a point behind Lentz.  And if you add Jason Gamble, Augie Burttram, and Sean Babcock to the mix, that makes seven racers all within 20 points of first place.

The last remaining Mini Stock Division on dirt is going through some changes at Ocala Speedway as racers and the track staff work to make this group a success again.  And as the changes take shape, the points race has remained tight along the way, with Paul Combast currently holding the lead.  But despite getting a win last week, Combast can’t seem to shake Nick and Dan Kerr who are lurking just 4 and 5 points behind him.  And Combast also is wary of Keith Briggs, who has battled everything from a bad back, to a broken race car, to plain old lousy luck.  Briggs sits only 11 points shy of the leader in the forth spot, and seems to be having more success each week.

Casey Feaster has emerged as the man to beat in Ocala’s Gladiator Division in 2010, but last Friday night his “win” lasted only as long as it took the tech officials to find an illegal part, so the 20 car earned a DQ and a goose egg in the points battle.  That transgression sent Feaster plummeting in the points, 46 points out of first and 6th in line.  And sitting on top of the points list is Steven Johnson who inherited a win after the tech officials finished their work on Friday, but his seat may not be as comfortable as it seems, as young Kody Fisher is in second place just 4 points out of first, and Lasoski Racing’s Devin Walker is just 5 points shy of Fisher.  So while an adult may be in charge for the moment, it looks like the youngsters may be taking over the game.

Race fans can enter the grandstand gate on Friday night at 5PM, and heat races will get underway at 8PM.  Fans are also reminded to get their advance tickets to the Annual Monster Jam Summer Tour, featuring the most popular Monster Truck on the planet, Grave Digger!  Monster Jam will take over Ocala Speedway on April 30th through May 2nd.  For a complete schedule of events, or to check ticket prices, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com, for more information.

Rasslin and Racin Action at Volusia this Saturday

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- Whether it is a stereotype or not is debatable, but across the Southland two of the more popular sports are “rasslin” and “racin.”  Both will come together this Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park as the Florida Wrestling Association opens a night of racing at the south’s fastest half mile.  Included in the program will be plenty of bone jarring wrestling action from the FWA, plus hard fought racing excitement from the Top Gun Sprint Car Series, the Florida Mini Sprint Association, the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association Vintage Cars, and VSP’s own Budweiser Modifieds.

Wrestling fans will want to come early to see all of the action from ringside, as the Florida Wrestling Association rings the bell at 6PM behind the grandstands near turn one.  Whether it is high flying action from the top of the ropes, or brutal grappling down on the mat, the top names in regional wrestling will be battling it out in this awesome opportunity to see all of the action in the great outdoors.  And in addition, stick around for a night of high speed action as some of the best Florida racers tangle on the track.

The Top Gun Sprint Car Series will bring a talented field of top 360 sprinters to Volusia Speedway, including 16 year old sensation Amanda Ferguson.  Ferguson jumped in front of the field at Ocala Speedway’s 3/8ths mile track and collected her first win on dirt just a couple of weeks ago, immediately getting the attention of fans and her fellow competitors, and everyone is anxious to see if she can tame the wide and fast half mile at VSP.  Also look for a show from Gene Lasker, who flatly refuses to do anything unless it is at full throttle.

Brett O’Donnell was the class of the field at the last outing for the Florida Mini Sprints at Volusia Speedway Park, and last year’s Rookie of the Year is currently at the top of the points battle as the FMSA returns for another round of high speed action.  Jessie Teed scored a second place finish at VSP and hopes to outpace the youngster this time around, while Brett’s father, Tim O’Donnell, looks to regain the consistency that won him the 2009 FMSA Points Championship last season.

Anyone who is into the history of racing will enjoy seeing the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association hit the track this weekend, as their restored racing machines turn laps at the south’s fastest half mile.  DAARA racers will be sporting machines that will educate the young and bring back exciting memories to the old, and will offer the chance for fans of all ages to experience a vast collection of racing history without going to a museum.

And after taking a week off, the Budweiser Modifieds will be back in action at VSP with Jamie Carter still working to extend his points lead over the rest of the competitors.  Jeff Mathews is trailing Carter by 39 points going into this week’s action, and hopes to chip away some of that lead with a solid performance without having to worry about driving a late model as well on the same night.  Both Carter and Mathews have been solid this season, and undoubtedly will be ready for each other and the rest of the field this Saturday night.

Fans are reminded to come early to catch the wrestling action which gets underway this Saturday night at 6PM, with racing following at 7:30.  For more information please visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net or call 386-985-4402. And fans are reminded that there will be a special pre event party at the Ice House Saloon in Bunnell, beginning at 7PM on Friday night.

IT’S TIM RUSSELL ALL THE WAY IN AMF CHASSIS 100 AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Auburndale Speedway saw its biggest crowd of the year Saturday night as the fans were treated to some outstanding racing. On top of the racing action, one lucky fan took home nearly $550 in the 50/50 raffle and “Lindsey’s Little Racers” gave away four brand new bicycles complete with helmets to four lucky kids. Two of those bikes were purchased and donated Saturday afternoon by Ronnie Sims of Becton-Sims Racing.

A top-notch field of 23 Late Models were on hand although mechanical issues in practice kept Jonathan Guy from competing. With several veteran hot shoes in the field it was youth being served in time trials as Jason Vail surprised everyone by setting quick time. The Clermont youngster had his Ron Vail Plumbing #407 on rails turning a lap at 13.472 seconds while recent FAST Series winner Jeff Scofield was second quick at 13.492. Tim Russell, making his first-ever venture to the Auburndale track, turned third quick time ahead of Georgia visitor Jason Hogan and “The Bulldozer,” Kevin Ingram. Vail’s quick lap was worth an extra $100 from JPL Auto Empire. (more…)

Vanderley Repeats! Wins PLM Feature

Apr 17, 2010 – Vanderley Repeats! Wins PLM Feature

There’s nothing like a trip to Victory Lane to put disappointment in your rearview mirror. Just ask D.J. Vanderley. The 18 year old erased the pain of a settling for his second college choice with a dominant win in the Pro Late Model Division on Friday at Five Flags Speedway. VanderLey is now two-for-two with wins in each race this season.

“This definitely helps,” said Vanderley, who chose to attend Auburn when scholarship money wasn’t enough to enroll at Georgia Tech. “Georgia Tech was my dream school, but it didn’t work out. But Auburn is going to be a really good education, too.”

Don’t pity Vanderley too much, though. He already has been awarded a presidential scholarship to Auburn and received admissions to its honors college. Plus, he’s one heck of a racecar driver. “All the stars seem to be lining up for us,” Vanderley said. “The first race out here, we were a little loose. Tonight, we were a little tight. We know where we want to be.” A scary thought for the rest of the division.

After an early crash in the 40-lap feature, which did damage to defending series champion Ronnie Smith, Vanderley gradually worked his way to the front. He finally got by leader David Jones at the start-finish line on Lap 19. As much as runner-up Keith Thorpe tried to cut into VanderLey’s massive lead, the kid just kept pulling away.

“Two poles, two wins. It doesn’t get much better than this so far,” Vanderley said. He did in fact win the pole, but started sixth when an unlucky roll of the dice pushed him back to sixth for the feature’s start. The dice roll nearly cost him when an opening-lap pileup caught Smith, Thomas Praytor, Kyle Bryant and almost included him. “I swear that was scary,” said Vanderley, who dodged trouble with some nifty driving. “I didn’t think I’d make it through. It was a headache.”

That’s about the only pain the young man felt Friday.

Modified Division
Ryan Redmon might have lost his power steering, but he didn’t lose his speed in taking his second consecutive Modified feature.
“I lost my power steering with about 10-12 laps left, so I got a little workout,” the Marianna resident said. But it didn’t matter. He had already built a commanding lead.

Redmon took the lead on Lap 2 with a strong move to the outside. He passed three cars, including polesitter Gerald Wilkerson coming out of Turn 4. The caution flag came out on Lap 5 when Chris Cotto spun out while running third. Three laps later, the second and final caution came out when Mike Maddox, who had just taken over third place, had a mechanical failure.

After the restart, Redmon pulled away. Nathan Ingersoll took second, while Wilkerson was third.

Sportsman Division
Steve Buttrick used his favorite line at the top of the track to capture his second win in as many weeks. Buttrick took the lead for good at the end of Lap 14 when then-leader Willie Kitchen got sideways. Jim Pokrant finished third.

“I could get used to this,” Buttrick said. A two-car crash on the opening lap had the night’s polesitter Bubba Winslow in the thick of it. After some work quick back at his hauler, Winslow put his car back on the track with his front-end smashed. Winslow, who entered the night just two points shy of Buttrick in the division’s standings, valiantly drove to an eighth finish to earn some crucial points.

Three-time defending series champion Randy Thompson, a contender early in the race, had serious mechanical issues and finished a distant 10th.

Bombers Division
When he needed it most, Mike Goraum snatched the checkered flag. With Daryl Lynchard, who came into the night leading in points, out because of an early crash, Goraum seized the opportunity. “It was a great night,” he said.

Goraum passed Rick Grimes the midway point and held on despite a couple of restarts because of cautions. Grimes finished runner-up with Tony Boyd third.
