TYLER AUDIE SURVIVES FOR FIRST PRO LATE MODEL WIN AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY

David RussellJust a few years ago Tyler Audie was racing on the Quarter Midget track located between turns one and two at New Smyrna Speedway.  Recently moving up to the Pro Late Model class on the big high-banked half mile track, Audie surprised everyone, including himself, by standing in victory lane Saturday night following a wild and controversial season-opening 50 lap race for the Pro Late Models as a new season of weekly NASCAR Whelan All-America RacingSeries action began.

Cody Blair topped the 16-car field in time trials with a lap of 17.976, the only driver to go under 18 seconds.  Jerry Symons was second in qualifying followed by Ricky Anderson and William Carroll.  That quartet would start in reverse order for the feature as Blair pulled the four pill placing Carroll on the pole for the start of the race.  The original start was called back after Donnie Varcoe and Chris Brannon tangled up going into turn one, however both

were able to continue.  Ricky Anderson zipped out to the early lead once the race went green only to see the caution displayed for the first time on lap nine as Jerry Symons went for a spin off the bumper of Canadian visitor Alex Guenette.  David Rogers, subbing for his TM Ranch teammate Brad May, had nowhere to go and crashed into Symons.  As “The Hammer” had his car towed to the pits, Rogers drove his car back to his pit stall where the team made repairs and got him back on track in time for the restart although his car was never quite right from that point and he later dropped from the running. COKER TOPS LEGEND CARS AT ORLANDO SPEEDWORLD – HINDMAN HOLDS ON IN STRICTLY STOCKS

orlandospeedworld800Week number three of the 2014 season saw plenty of action at Orlando SpeedWorld as the weather finally felt more “Florida like” than the first pair of race nights.

Darin Coker made the trip up from the Southwest part of the State along with teammate Keith Sinkula and they ended up one-two in the 25-Lap Legend Car feature.  Robbie Lyons, the previous weeks’ winner, grabbed the early advantage and did everything he could to hold off an early charge by Sinkula who took second from Dave Gleason on lap four.  David Owen looped his car to bring out the caution on lap seven and was sent to the rear of the field for the restart.  As the field took the green flag again, Coker slipped by his teammate and took off after Lyons.  After some really good racing, Coker pulled ahead on lap 14 bringing Sinkula with him.  A lap 17 caution for a Mark Bibeau spin didn’t slow Coker as he became the third Legend Car feature winner in as many weeks.  Sinkula came home second with Lyons third and Bibeau recovered to take fourth spot ahead of Whitney Poole, who made her first Legend Car start a good one driving Owen’s back up car.  Bob Lyons took sixth with Gleason and Owen rounding out the finishers although neither was still running at the end. Late pass sends Aguilar to TBARA win

ja

By SCOTT LOCKWOOD
Desoto Speedway
On a night when the Safety-Kleen TBARA Sprint Car series was honoring one of their pioneering drivers, Joey Aguilar made sure that he was honoring his mentor in a proper way with a pass coming to the white flag that allowed him to take his second consecutive win to open the season.
Aguilar – whose last visit to the speedway ended with a helicopter ride to a local hospital after he received burns from an oil line fire – started ninth in the inaugural Larry Brazil Memorial 30-lap event. As polesitter Tommy Nichols paced the field for the first 15 laps of the race, Aguilar, Shane Bulter and Ben Fritz were making quick work of the rest of the field on their way to the front of the field. Fritz, who started sixth, was already up to second by the end of lap one.
Butler made his way past Fritz for second at the end of lap 10 and quickly ran Nichols down to battle for the lead. Butler used a diamond manuver where he went high in the middle of turns three and four and shot to the bottom of the race track coming off the corner. Butler won a drag race with Nichols into the first turn. (more…)
