Oh, The Taste Of Victory

Jim Rouse, BRP Media (9-29-12) Ocala, FL – Night Of A Thousands was a huge success for our Twisted Tea Top Gun Sprint Cars, Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators.

Hobby Stocks would start the night off right as “Ragin” Rodney Wright would lead lap 1 from outside pole. Wright had Tim Powers and Trevor Gamble breathing down his neck so there was no riding at any point. Up front after 4 cautions it was still Wright, Powers, and Gamble! Tim Powers stole the lead on the next restart and Gamble would jump up to 2nd spot while Wright saw a good night go bad. Just a few laps later Hunter Gustafson would spin out of turn 4 and Trey Cameron made slight contact to bring out another caution flag. The top 3 was now Powers, Gamble, and Wright. Trey Cameron would spin and Mark Maresca would tap him before Jonathan Appleby, Matt Kramer, Larry Isgette, Glenn Baum, Joseph Forsyth, Hunter Gustafson, and Don Woosley all made late contact which would bring out a red flag. Maresca would pit while Cameron, Woosley, Isgette, Baum, Forsyth, and Kramer would have to retire. All drivers were okay after the massive 9-car pile-up. Green-White-Checkered would give Gamble and Wright another shot but there was no stopping Tim Powers as he cruised to his 5th win of 2012. Gamble and Wright would finish 2nd and 3rd, respectively, as Mike Stalnaker and Kyle Maynard completed the top 5. (more…)

It’s Wide Open Now

This week is Night Of A Thousands and the Twisted Tea Top Gun Sprint Cars, Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators will all race for that big prize.

In a season of change for the Twisted Tea Top Gun Sprint Cars we see that Matt Kurtz has been the dominant driver of 2012 while Ryan Partin has used conistency to stick within 32 points of the youngster. AJ Maddox took a big win earlier in 2012 and sits 3rd in the standings but he’s 42 behind Partin! Mark Ruel, Jr. and Danny Martin, Jr. have also broken into Coors Light Winner’s Circle and there are plenty of other drivers who could do the same. Watch as Partin, the 2010 champion, chases down young Kurtz and see if driver #92 can hold on!

So, with 10 feature wins, 2 runner-up finishes, and 3 DNFs (2 while leading) in just 15 events it’s pretty safe to say Kyle Bronson can wheel a Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds machine. As he chases down the title in the Hammond Motorsports #40B you have the 4-time defending champion, Jeff Mathews, scrambling as he, without a drastic change, has lost his reign at Bubba Raceway Park. Mathews can count 2012 a success, however, as he has won a feature in both his Modified and Late Model- 1 of only 2 drivers to do so this year. (more…)

No Falling Into Victory

Jim Rouse, BRP Media (9-22-12) Ocala, FL – The RaceCar Engineering Late Models returned while the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, Barfield Law Group Mini Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators also put on spectacular shows.

First up were the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models. Christian McGillivray would lead from pole until a lap 2 restart which allowed Carter Stokes to get around him. Just moments after the lap was completed the yellow flew for Kevin Mills who had a flat tire on his SNM Racing #01. On lap 5, Forrest Gough, fighting for 3rd, went door-to-door with JO Nobles and spun as a result. Denica Hetznecker and Billy Holmes were also involved when Denica spun to avoid contact with Gough. All 3 would continue on. Stokes pulled away from the field but “Big Chief” David Showers and JO Nobles were hunting the young driver down. Stokes would hold on for win #1 on the dirt while JO Nobles would improve his points lead with a 2nd place finish. David Showers used his son’s machine to finish 3rd with Forrest Gough and Christian McGillivray the top 5. (more…)

It’s More Than Oval Racing!

Jim Rouse, BRP Media (9-17-12) Ocala, FL – As the points paying season at Bubba Raceway Park begins to close we see that no division has more than 10 features scheduled through the season finale. A few of those divisions will come 1 race closer to deciding their champion; they are the RaceCar Engineering Late Models, Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and Barfield Law Group Mini Stocks. Those 4 divisions will be joined by the first Figure-8 Race of the Bubba Clem Era!

Mark Whitener and Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. can make things pretty boring and 2012 has been no exception- they’ve won 9 of the 15 points-paying features held in 2012 with “The Magic Man” up 1 on Lloyd. However, those 6 they haven’t won have been won by 6 different drivers including top-5 points chasers Richard Ferry and “Cheddar” Christian Augspurger. Ferry held Lloyd off for 25-laps early in the season while “Cheddar” remembered a move Lloyd used to beat him and made full use of it as he beat Whitener by the nose of the car. (more…)

PJ Wiggins Memorial

Jim Rouse, BRP Media (9-15-12) Ocala, FL – Our very own Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds put on a 40-lapper in honor of the fallen PJ Wiggins. Alongside them were the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and the Barfield Law Group Mini Stocks.

The first order of business was our Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models 20 lap feature. A few cautions slowed action early on but Forrest Gough was fast enough to lead Carter Stokes and JO Nobles with 18 to go. Under a lap 3 caution Carter Stokes’ right rear went flat dropping him outside of the top 5, an unfortunate circumstance for driver #33. On lap 5 David Showers had troubles which cost him a top 3 spot and he would retire from the race moments later. David Ponder climbed the back stretch wall on lap 7 which brought the caution out again; fortunately Ponder was okay after his wild ride. Under caution Forrest Gough broke the rear-end in a heartbreaker for the driver who has had more bad luck than any one else in recent memory. (more…)

PJ Wiggins Memorial Night One

Jim Rouse, BRP Media (9-14-12) Ocala, FL – The PJ Wiggins Memorial was a success as was the make-up race from the Florida State Modified Championship. The best Modifieds in the Southeast ran 70 laps of feature action while the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and the Rent-N-Roll Gladiators put on fantastic features as well.

First up was the make-up race for the Florida State Modified Championship which went 30 laps. In turn 1 Bubba Christian smacked the wall while Wayne Hammond found the wall and had help from Ronnie Soltis to finish the job. Christian and Hammond would retire from the race while Soltis would continue on.Kyle Bronson went from 5th to 1st on lap 1 before Chuck Gustafson, Jr., Ivedent Lloyd, Jr., Dalton Lanich, and Scott Kurtzner piled up in turn 2; Bronson, Rich Pratt, and Ronnie Chance would lead the field. Just 2 laps later Rich Pratt would retire with mechanical problems and set up another restart. (more…)

PJ Wiggins Memorial

By Jim Rouse, BRP Media (9-10-12) Ocala, FL – This week-end’s 2-day show is the 2nd annual PJ Wiggins Memorial. Wiggins was an outstanding race-car driver but was, and still is, a great father figure to his children and even children who watched him win with a smooth and graceful technique; more importantly, he was always a very thankful man. A victim to skin cancer, he is sorely missed in the racing community so we honor him with the 2nd annual PJ Wiggins Memorial for the Scorpion Racing Products Open-Wheel Modifieds. Racing alongside them Friday night will be the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and the Rent-N-Roll Gladiators.

The Modifeds are actually going to race twice as they make-up the Florida State Modified Championship race from July that was rained-out. So, Kyle Bronson and Dalton Lanich will have twice as much wear on the equipment (though both could drive 2 different cars) as they chase a championship. Of course, defending PJ Wiggins Memorial champion Rich Pratt isn’t out of either hunt and the Anthony, FL driver knows a trick or two around Bubba Raceway Park. The driver we call “4-Time” is in 4th as he chases #5; Jeff Mathews, however, has work to do if he wants it. Jim Passino went all Brett Favre on the sabbatical and was back behind the wheel of the 34A last time out. You can’t count any one out and don’t forget this- David Reutimann isn’t on any of the NASCAR entry lists. (more…)

Triple Double

Jim Rouse, BRP Media (9-7-12) – Ocala, FL – The Demolition Derby and Powder Puff Derby were a great addition to the Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators. With the 3 regular divisions making up a feature from mid-July in addition to a regular night of racing it was the most exciting racing of 2012.

First up was the Hobby Stock make-up race with Scott Haas the leader from outside pole as a caution came out for Chad Scranton’s flattened right rear tire. Sean Monaghan had a tough opening to the race as he hit everything but the pace car before he stopped and brought the 2nd caution out. Rodney Wright would steal the lead out of turn 4 on the restart while Tim Powers attempted to swallow Haas up. Chad Scranton methodically worked through the field and was up to P4 after Haas retired just past halfway. Wright and Powers fought like brothers over the last dozen laps. Rodney Wright won the fight with Powers 2nd. Trevor Gamble was nearly a lap down in 3rd with Chad Scranton and Hunter Gustafson a lap down in 4th and 5th, respectively. (more…)

The Fight For First

Jim Rouse, BRP Media, 9-3-12 Ocala, FL – As we begin the 7th month of our 9 month points-paying season at Bubba Raceway Park we have a spectacular show in store. The Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators will not only run their regular events but they will make up the rained-out features from mid-July. These races will be run in the sequence of Feature-Heat-Feature. Joining these 3 exciting divisions will be the Powder Puff Derby and the Demolition Derby!

So, after 6 months of racing Rodney Wright has a 32 point advantage over Trevor Gamble. They’ve had 16 features; how much closer can you get? Mike Stalnaker has been masterful with his under-powered equipment and a win is just around the corner and no one will be surprised. In 4th is Mark Maresca who, up until his last race, had been flying under the radar. Last time he was flying up front until he barrel-rolled the 77M. In 5th is Hunter Gustafson who has shown determination and improvement in his #15. Though the title contenders are very strong, he could find Coors Light Winner’s Circle and will be a massive threat for the title in 2013. (more…)

Wiener Nationals Highlight End Of The 6th Month

By- Jim Rouse, BRP Media – 8-25-12 (Ocala, FL) The Wiener Nationals came to Bubba Raceway Park for the first time in it’s 5-year history and “The Longdogs” put on a great charitable show. RaceCar Engineering Late Models, Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators also put on a wonderful night of racing.

Wiener Nationals were very exciting but no one could catch Wilhelm “Willie” Linebarier as he took title #4 with ease over a strong group of dogs including 2nd place Gator from the Sullivan Racing group and the 3rd placed Hammond Motorsports’ non-breed winner Lexi.

Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds started with Jeff Mathews leading a 1-2 for Mathews Motorsports. We’d go 3 laps before Bubba Christian spun on the backstretch. Dalton Lanich and Garret Stewart made contact on the restart which left Lanich very slow (though he would continue on) and stacked up Jim Passino, Gary Sexton, Wayne Hammond, Bubba Christian, and Chuck Gustafson, Jr. Mathews Motorsports led with Mathews leading Lloyd and Kyle Bronson sat in 3rd. (more…)
