It was a different car for driver Jeff Choquette, but the same result as he won both of the Allen Turner Pro Late Model Twin 50s on Friday night at Five Flags Speedway.

In June, the West Palm Beach driver won both Twin 50s driving a different car.

“It’s a different car, a different chassis, a different motor,” said Choquette. “It’s the second time I’ve raced it and we wanted to see how it would do here.”

It did just fine.

Choquette, returning this season after more than a year hiatus from racing, was the fastest qualifier for the first race and started eighth on the inverted start.

He worked his way to the front, going underneath leader Casey Roderick on lap 36 and taking the lead a half-lap later. Points leader Bret Holmes finished third.

That was the starting order for the second Twin 50s and it turned out to be the same finish.

Choquette led all 50 laps. The only threat was when he came upon some lapped cars, allowing Roderick to close in.

“A few of those lap cars, if they would have just stayed in their lane,” he said. “But Casey kept me really honest. We ran as hard as we could run smart.” (more…)

Kerry Madsen Beats Outlaws in #LetsRaceTwo Opener at Eldora

All Star Regular Chad Kemenah Scores Second Place Finish after Battle with Madsen

050716EldoraVLGraphicROSSBURG, Ohio – May 6, 2016 – Kerry Madsen dominated Friday night’s #LetsRaceTwo opener at Eldora Speedway as he bested his former World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series colleagues and beat back a challenge from All Star Circuit of Champions regular Chad Kemenah to score his first series win since August 2015.

Madsen was on a mission in the night’s feature, after starting on the pole in his No. 29 Keneric Health car, he was the class of the field. Kemenah, who charged forward from a 10th place starting position, got within one half second at one point, but was never able to make the pass on the Aussie.

“I’ve never ran a race out there where it was so slow out there – not typically our strong suit,” Madsen said. “So the guys worked so hard on the car all night. The car was unbelievable. Just couldn’t be happier with the win.”

After winning the Dash, Madsen joined reigning series champion Donny Schatz on the front row of the 30-lap feature. As main event kicked off, Madsen jumped out to sizable early lead as Kemenah began his run forward. He very quickly picked off several cars and by lap one was in sixth. By lap two, he was in fourth. Elliot Dynasty Overthrown with DQ, Jones Captures Back-to-Back Snowballs

Joneswins2Chuck Corder, Pensacola, FL – It what was a virtual coronation Sunday of Chase Elliott’s growing kingdom of trophies in Victory Lane at Five Flags Speedway rose another power in the Tech Shed.

A few short hours after Elliott had hoisted the Tom Dawson trophy for his second career Snowball Derby victory, he was stripped of the crown under technical inspection.

Instead, Erik Jones went from settling for second to successfully defending his historic 2012 Snowball Derby win by capturing a second consecutive crown.

Not surprisingly, Elliott had no comment to share about his feelings following the official ruling of “unapproved weight” to his No. 9 Super Late Model.

“It was all a fair process,” Five Flags general manager Tim Bryant said. “There were no arguments from the Elliotts on that.”

Elliott and crew chief Ricky Turner have been simpatico for the duration of the 18-year-old’s entire late model career.

“It was an oversight on my part,” Turner told Speed51.com, short-track’s online bible. “I messed up”

The disqualification meant Elliott’s apparent weekend sweep of the 46th annual Snowball and Saturday night’s Snowflake 100 for Pro Late Models went poof.

More importantly, it meant once-bridesmaid Jones was now back-to-back champion Erik Jones. (more…)

The 46th Annual Snowball Derby presented by Jegs is just days away and the anticipation is at an all time high. 5 Flags Presents $5 Dollar Fan Night – Modifieds, Super Stock, Sportsmen, Bombers

0906promoR1The 2013 Season is winding down but the racing action has been heating up, as the various Championship battles come to a head, and the Snowball Derby looms in sight. Regardless of the motives, the competitors have pulled out all the stops for the last few races.

The Open Wheel Modified Championship has just 2 races left, and defending champion Donnie Hamrac has closed the gap on early season sensation Brandon Howell. And Donald Crocker has set the bar as of late, winning the most recent 5 Flags event. The Super Stock division has very much the same scenario going on, with Bubba Winslow and Randy Thompson battling for the 2nd straight year. The Super Stocks will go at it again this Friday, with their Championship event scheduled for the night of Sept. 20th. The Beef O’Brady’s Sportsman division has pretty much been the Steve Buttrick show in 2013, but defending Champion Brannon Fowler has kept him close all season long, and has the chance to close the gap on Double Points night this Friday. Same goes for the Butler U Pull-It Bombers, where Michael Nelson seems to have found his groove, winning most recently and staying atop the points standings where he has resided all year. (more…)

Out of Nowhere, 16-Year-Old Erik Jones Wrestles Busch for 45th Annual Snowball Derby Crown

By Chuck Corder – The anticipation boiled inside Carol Jones.Sandwiched between fans and Escambia County’s finest, behind the track gate at Five Flags Speedway, she watched as her boy Erik Jones climbed out of his black No. 4 Super Late Model in Victory Lane and celebrated his improbable 300-lap win at the 45th annual Snowball Derby.

Carol Jones clinched her fists and grinded her teeth. Her prince, now the king of short-track racing’s heaviest crown, wrestling away the Tom Dawson trophy from NASCAR superstar Kyle Busch.

And she couldn’t get through these unfamiliar faces.

“I’m going to throw up,” she said. “This is amazing. This is unbelievable. This is the best.”

Cutting through the kindness of strangers, mother finally reached son and the two shared a lifetime of adulation.

Jones became the second consecutive 16 year old to win America’s most prestigious short-track race, a year after Chase Elliott became the event’s youngest winner.

Jones also is the first driver to win in his first Derby attempt since Gary St. Amant did it 20 years ago. (more…)
