Hearn Returns for Super DIRTcar Series Win at Lebanon Valley

Starting 23rd, Brett Hearn Beats out Jimmy Phelps for Victory

WEST LEBANON, N. Y. – August 17, 2012 – Brett’s back. And Brett “the Jet” Hearn’s return to the Super DIRTcar Bit-Block Modified Series did not disappoint.

Sudden illness kept Hearn from competing in last week’s series events at Merrittville and I96 Speedways, but he made up for his absences with a stunning victory at Lebanon Valley Speedway’s $17,500-to-win “Mr. DIRT Track USA” Thursday, Aug. 16.

After starting 23rd, even Hearn, seven-time Super DIRTcar Series champion and regular racer of Lebanon Valley’s high-banked half-mile, was surprised to find himself leading the field through the checkered flag.

“I’m totally in shock,” said Hearn in victory lane. “I really didn’t know what to expect tonight.”

Hearn had made the fast time with a 19.673-second lap, nearly setting a new track record. However, a broken set of gears forced him to the pits early in his qualifier, causing him to finish tenth in the heat. His team prepped the backup car and Hearn powered it to second place in a last-chance qualifier, putting him 23rd in the starting grid. (more…)

Dollansky Earns the Kasey Kahne Challenge Championship after another Top-Five Finish

McCOOL JUNCTION, Neb. – Aug. 14, 2012 – Evidently, momentum is a big deal in sprint car racing.  Coming off his sixth Goodyear Knoxville Nationals title in the last seven years last weekend, Donny Schatz whooped most of the field on Tuesday night at Junction Motor Speedway during the fourth-and-final round of the NAPA Auto Parts Kasey Kahne Challenge Presented by Mid-Nebraska Land Developing, A&L Sales & Service and Friesen Chevrolet.

It was only the second World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event at the 3/8-mile oval, where Craig Dollansky earned the inaugural Kasey Kahne Challenge title. He received a unique trophy by Jay Simes of Simes Graphic Designs as well as a $3,000 bonus.

“The money can go pretty quick in this business, but (it’s) definitely one of the more unique trophies I’ve ever won,” said Dollansky, the only driver to record a top five in three of the four events. “It’s a great accomplishment for our team. To come out on top and to have this beautiful trophy, it’s pretty cool.” (more…)

Well-Rested Lanigan Looks To Continue Epic World of Outlaws Late Model Series Hot Streak During Michigan Doubleheader Aug. 17-18

Record-Setting Driver Leads National Tour To NAPA Auto Parts Events At Winston Speedway On Aug. 17, Merritt Raceway On Aug. 18

CONCORD, NC – Aug. 13, 2012 – Darrell Lanigan won’t merely bring a hot streak of epic proportion into two nights of NAPA Auto Parts-sponsored World of Outlaws Late Model Series action on Aug. 17 at Winston Speedway and Aug. 18 at Merritt Raceway.

Giving his competition even more reason to worry, the sizzling superstar from Union, Ky., will also enter the national tour’s Michigan doubleheader with his mind clear and body rejuvenated from a few days of R&R.

Lanigan, 42, is set to take his tour-record six-race win streak into the Wolverine State following a short vacation to Miami, Fla. He flew there last Friday – three days after capturing his sixth consecutive victory at Shawano (Wis.) Speedway – to spend some well-earned time away from the rigors of an especially busy summer racing stretch. (more…)

Super DIRTcar Series Invades Lebanon Valley Speedway

Drivers Compete with Two-Time Consecutive Winner JR Heffner for $17,500 Prize

WEST LEBANON, N. Y. – Challenge awaits traveling Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified drivers as they move into the series’ eighth round Thursday, Aug. 16, at Lebanon Valley Speedway and battle for the hefty $17,500 winner’s award.

The past two years the series has invaded the speedway’s high banked, half-mile clay oval, local star JR Heffner piloted his #74 A. Colarusso/Bicknell Chassis/Bedell horsepower machine to beat out the likes of Brett Hearn, also a Lebanon Valley regular, current two-time defending series champion Matt Sheppard, and four-time series champion Danny Johnson.

Although the father of four from Pittsford, Mass., rarely travels with the series, Heffner made winning a series event look easy, leading all 100 laps at last year’s Lebanon Valley Super DIRTcar Series event. (more…)

Schatz Wins Sixth Knoxville Nationals Title in Last Seven Years

Kinser, Swindell both fail to advance to the feature for the first time since 1975

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – Aug. 11, 2012 – Wow.

Simply put, the packed Knoxville Raceway grandstands were wowed before the 52nd annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals feature hit the track on Saturday. Then, the near capacity crowd was on its feet at the checkered flag as Donny Schatz recorded his sixth Nationals victory in the last seven years after outlasting Brian Brown by 0.117 seconds to earn the $150,000 prize.

“There’s something about this place when we come here for the Nationals, it’s game on,” Schatz said. “It takes everything to be right. When you get on it and get it right, it’s something that you can keep bringing back here. That’s why we’ve been able to get this success because the baseline we have for coming here is an awesome baseline.”

History was made before the green flag waved as two of the sports’ biggest stars – Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell – failed to advance to the feature. It was the first time since 1975 that neither driver earned a spot in the prestigious event. For Kinser, it snapped a Knoxville Nationals best 34-year streak in the main event. (more…)

Henderson Savors New Friday Format at Goodyear Knoxville Nationals

The Sioux Falls, S.D., native wins the final qualifying night to lock into Saturday’s feature

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – Aug. 10, 2012 – Justin Henderson capitalized on a new format to the Friday portion of the 52nd annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals.

With a new team and a unique opportunity to start from scratch, Henderson took advantage to lock himself into Saturday’s $150,000-to-win main event at the famed Knoxville Raceway after outlasting David Gravel in the final qualifying night.

“I was very worried coming into tonight,” Henderson said. “It puts a lot of extra pressure and stress on the guys that aren’t already locked in, but I have to say the finale came out good in our favor this time. I’m a fan of it now, but I think every year it’s going to change for sure.”

A total of 67 drivers competed with the new format, which erased everyone’s qualifying performance and locked in the top four finishers from Friday’s feature. For Henderson, who would have been mired in the middle of the B Main under the old format, Friday worked out perfectly. (more…)

Meyers One Step Closer after Night 2 Win at Knoxville Nationals

Stevie Smith and Outlaws points leader Craig Dollansky are Saturday’s front-row starters

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – Aug. 9, 2012 – Like a wrinkled grocery list after a day at the store, Jason Meyers scratched off his racing goals one by one over the last decade.  The two-time defending World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion had accomplished nearly everything and anything he set his sights on before hanging up his racing suit in the offseason, choosing to focus on his family rather than chasing sprint car races across the country.

Every goal was met and crossed off except one – a Goodyear Knoxville Nationals title.

“Out of all the goals we’ve set in sprint car racing, we’ve achieved them all except for winning the Knoxville Nationals,” he said.

Meyers is one step closer to that dream after he recorded an emphatic victory on Thursday on the second qualifying night of the 52nd annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway. Driving for longtime family friend Tom Tarlton, Meyers led the final 18 laps in his return to the famed half mile. (more…)

Severe Afternoon Storm Leads to a Late Night for World of Outlaws at Knoxville Raceway

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – Aug. 8, 2012 – Kyle Larson, the phenom who wins in anything and everything he races, claimed the opening night of the 52nd annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals on a stormy Wednesday at Knoxville Raceway in his first attempt in the prestigious event.

“Getting a win at Knoxville is so big, but it’s only a prelim night,” Larson said after winning the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event. “It’s going to be tough for sure, but tonight gave me a lot of confidence going into Saturday.”

Larson took the checkered flags for the first time at the famed half mile around 1 a.m. to complete the weather-delayed opener in the biggest weekend in sprint car racing. Night Two of qualifying is Thursday with Opening Ceremonies scheduled for 8 p.m. (more…)

Ironman Will Run Separately Ahead of ‘Spring Classic’ Oct. 13 at I-55

Tickets for Completion of Storm-Delayed 55-Lap Feature to be Honored as Event will Run Independent of Full Nightcap program

PEVELY, Mo. – Aug. 8, 2012 – World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series and Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 officials, in conjunction with the track crew, have developed a plan to complete the Federated Auto Parts Ironman 55 as a separate event on Oct. 13, honoring tickets from Saturday night’s event that was shortened by severe weather.

With World of Outlaws Sprint Cars staged Saturday night on the high-banked, one-third-mile oval, authorities alerted track officials to impending severe weather. The event was quickly postponed to ensure fans would have time to find safety ahead of the storm.

The 55-lap feature event was postponed to Saturday, Oct. 13, and will run on the same day as the “Spring Classic” that was rain-delayed from its originally scheduled date in April. The Federated Auto Parts Ironman 55 will run as a stand-alone program at 3 p.m. and the grandstands will be cleared and reopen for the evening’s full “Spring Classic” make-up program, which also includes DIRTcar UMP Modifieds.
