Richards Grabs Georgia Boot Super Bowl of Racing Finale

Josh Richards Wins FinaleBRUNSWICK, GA (February 7, 2016) On Sunday afternoon at Golden Isles Speedway, Josh Richards takes the $15,000 finale of the Georgia Boot Super Bowl of Racing. The event was sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.

Jonathan Davenport, the reigning LOLMDS National Champion made a valiant effort on the final lap to pass Richards, but he spun allowing Richards to take the checkers first for the second time this weekend. Jared Landers slipped by Davenport for second, while Davenport re-gained control of his car to cross the line in third. Scott Bloomquist was fourth, followed by Eddie Carrier Jr.

Davenport led the first lap of the 60-lap event before Richards grabbed the lead on lap two. Richards then held the top spot over Davenport until lap 35 when Davenport was able to forge back into the lead. The two then dueled as Richards rallied back into the lead for good on lap 46.

“I kept watching the crew guys that were giving me signals. I knew he [Davenport] was still close when I was leading. He [Davenport] actually helped me when he passed me because he showed me another line. For a day race, the track had plenty of grip to it. I was conserving my tires, I didn’t know if they would last, but they did. The track crew did a great job with the track! To win twice down here, it’s a great start to the season.” (more…)

SMITH HOLDS OFF CONLEY FOR GIS SUNDAY NeSMITH LATE MODEL WIN

Smith Holds Off Conley at GISBRUNSWICK, GA – David Smith of Inman, SC held off a spirited challenge from Cale Conley of Vienna, WV to win the 50-lap Round 5 of the RockAuto.com Winter Shootout for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series on Sunday at Golden Isles Speedway. Smith led all 50 laps in the Upstate Wholesale Cars Special, but that did not describe the racing action.

Smith was the only car that did not hot lap before the race because Smith knew what the track was going to be like in a rare daytime race for the NeSmith Late Models. The track did get black, hard and slick, and it was also a track Conley liked after running the pavement last season in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

“Getting the pole last night was the key to winning this race, but I knew somebody was with me during the second half of the race,” Smith said. “Cale is a good racer and I knew he wouldn’t do anything to get us both in trouble. He really made me hit my marks and cover the bottom. We didn’t hot lap this morning because we only had four tires for this race, and we didn’t want to wear them out.” (more…)

Davenport Dominates Edwin Coggins Memorial at Golden Isles

Supermanb at GISBRUNSWICK, GA (February 6, 2016) – The reigning Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion, Jonathan Davenport led all 30 laps to win the Edwin Coggins Memorial on Saturday afternoon at Golden Isles Speedway.

Davenport would get the jump on last night’s winner, Josh Richards to the lead at the outset of the feature. Brian Shirley would get by Richards on the opening lap and hold the position until the checkered flag, barely edging Richards at the finish line. Jared Landers and 11th starting Steve Francis rounded out the top five.
“The whole key to the race was the start. I knew I had to beat Josh off the start. We found a rubber streak there that helped us in lapped traffic, I was a little nervous trying to get by those guys. I finally decided to get to the outside and go by them because I knew the guys behind me were probably pretty close”

“We couldn’t do this without the help of a lot of people. Troy Baird of Baird Transport, Bryson Motorsports, Mac Trailers, and everybody else that supports us. We still have work to do. But it’s a big confidence boost for the team.” (more…)

EDGE DOMINATES NIGHT ONE FOR NeSMITH LATE MODELS AT GOLDEN ISLES SPEEDWAY

18edge52cartergis020616BRUNSWICK, GA – Chase Edge of LaFayette, AL was the man to beat on Friday night at Golden Isles Speedway, as he won Night 1 of the RockAuto.com Winter Shootout for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series. Edge took the lead from Ryan Carter of Blackshear, GA on lap three, and never looked back in the 50-lap race to claim the top prize of $2,500.

Edge started out the evening by out-qualifying the 29-car field with a lap around the 4/10-mile clay oval in the Edge’s Gas Company Special in 16.344 seconds to earn the pole position for the bug show. Edge took the lead on the initial start, but a multi-car tangle in turn one brought about a complete restart.

Carter got the hole shot on the next green flag, and put his Mark’s Auto and Collision Special in the lead. Edge was able to get his momentum up on the second lap, and then sailed around Carter to take the lead he would never relinquish on the third tour around Golden Isles Speedway.

“Our car was fast from the time we unloaded it until we took the checkered flag.,” Edge said. “About the only mistake I made all night was on that restart when I let Ryan Carter get a jump on me. I really have taken a liking to Golden Isles Speedway because it’s big, fast, and it reminds me a lot of one of my home tracks, East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL. We’ll check the race car over real well in the morning and try to win another one tomorrow.” (more…)

WOOTEN WINS FIRST EVER NeSMITH STREET STOCK RACE AT GOLDEN ISLES SPEEDWAY

Golden-Isle-Speedway-2BRUNSWICK, GA – Local favorite Brian Wooten became the answer to a trivia question for the future, as he won the first-ever NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division race held on Wednesday night at Golden Isles Speedway. Wooten passed Ronald Dunn of Corinth, MS with five laps to go to take the victory worth $2,000 in the opening night of the Super Bowl of Racing.

Dunn towed his Dunn Motorsports High Roller Race Cars “House Car” to South Georgia and appeared to be the class of the field early on in the evening. Dunn was only one of a few drivers that used the top groove at Golden Isles Speedway, and he easily won his Heat Race to earn the pole position for the main event.

When the green flag fell for the 25-lap feature race, Dunn took command running the top shelf of the 4/10-mile clay oval, and was able to open up a half straightaway lead over Kyle Livingood and Joe Corley, who battled early on for the second spot, followed by Garrett McDonald and Wooten. A caution flag on lap eight for a spin by Colby Hall, closed up the field, as two of the front runners had trouble. (more…)

RICHARDS HOLDS OFF SHEPPARD TO WIN AT GOLDEN ISLES

2016news_2-5BRUNSWICK, GA (February 5, 2016) – Josh Richards held off a late race charge from Brandon Sheppard to win on the opening night of the Georgia Boot Super Bowl of Racing at Golden Isles Speedway on Friday Night. Richards led but all but one lap on his way to victory in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event.

Sheppard; the 2015 LOLMDS Rookie of the Year; briefly took the lead from Richards with four laps to go, but Richards regained the top spot moments later and went on for his seventh career LOLMDS win. Sheppard crossed the line a car length and a half behind in second, followed by; last year’s series champion; Jonathan Davenport, Jared Landers, and Chris Madden.

“We had a pretty decent car the whole race,” said 28-year-old Richards. I was concerned about tire wear tonight; I felt like they were giving up towards the end. When we got into traffic, we were able to run the top around those guys in clean air and a clean track, which sure helped us, because those running behind me didn’t have that advantage.” (more…)

THE COYOTE CATCHES THE ROAD RUNNER AND RAMBO CAPTURES THE WORLD

franklinVLbrp013016OCALA, FL – Dennis “Rambo” Franklin of Gaffney, SC is like the Coyote in the Road Runner cartoon when it comes to the Chevrolet Performance World Championship Race. He has tried for ten years to win the race, and has come so close only to have an anvil fall out of the sky to crush his chances. That all changed on Saturday night at Bubba Raceway Park.

Rambo conquered the World. Franklin drove the M&W Transportation Special to victory in the biggest race of the year for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series, the 11th Annual Chevrolet Performance World Championship Race. Franklin, as the Coyote, captured the Road Runner in the form of Kyle Bronson of Brandon, FL.

But it wasn’t easy, as Franklin had to look out for anvils falling out of the sky during the last 11 laps of the 100-lap race, as Bronson made a sly Road Runner move. Franklin had taken the lead from Bronson on lap 26, and proceeded to set a fast pace. By the time a caution flag came out on lap 89, Rambo had put everyone from fourth on back at least one lap down.
