Rudd Dominates Open Wheel 35 Lapper

By Rick Anges

Bradenton, Fl. Cold weather brought some fast times at the “High Banks” of Desoto Super Speedway. Those who braved the chilly temps were in store for a great night of exciting racing.

Open Wheel Modifieds

In a field that boasted several Track champions it was Eric Rudd showed the way in the thirty five-lap feature event for the modified class. Rudd had fought an ill handling car all day and right before the feature made several adjustments that paid off.

While Rudd was pulling away to almost a full straight away lead behind him the racing heated up. “The Rocketman” Wayne Jefferson and “The Rocket” Teddy Nelson were battling it out for the second spot.

Several cautions would bunch the field but each time the green flew it would be Eric Rudd jumping out and pulling away and when the checkers flew it was Rudd taking the well deserved win. “It’s always a good win when you can beat Jefferson,” said Rudd in his post race interview.

Second was Jefferson followed across the stripe was Nelson in third. Fourth was Sean McLaughlin and fifth Ralph Bowman.

Jefferson took the win in the heat race.

Q Auto and Injury Pure Stocks

There were some tense moments during the Pure Stock feature. Chelsea Lau and Jamie Wilson were battling hard and as they came out of turn two both cars went head on into the wall. Wilson was ok but Lau had to make a trip to hospital. She was checked out and although sore she was deemed ok.

When the green came back out it was Joshua Todd and Robert Crisp going at it for the top spot. The duo ran side by side for several laps until it was Todd sliding into the top spot and onto the win. Crisp would take second. Third went to Duane Best, fourth was Darrin Ellis and fifth Mike Wilson.

Heat wins went to Robert Crisp and Duane Best

BOOKMILLER GOES FLAG TO FLAG FOR AUBURNDALE MODIFIED WIN

by Dave Westerman

The third week of the racing season still saw some chilly weather at Auburndale Speedway Saturday night, but a nice crowd of fans was treated to a full pit of race cars and plenty of action.

Fifteen Open Wheel Modifieds checked in to do battle in their 40 lap headliner with Kyle Bookmiller and Von Pope taking heat race wins to earn front row starting spots for the feature.

The first start was aborted when several cars at the rear of the starting grid got shuffled around sending Harold Cannon for a spin. No cars were damaged and a second try at starting the race saw Bookmiller waste little time showing who would be the boss on this night.

Pope slid back a few spots as Wayne Morris held on to second but was unable to do more than just keep Bookmiller in sight. Caution flew on lap eight as L.J. Grimm and Eddie Hartin got tangled up in turn four with both restarting at the tail. Bookmiller resumed his charge out front as Keith Lilley slid into third to challenge Morris.

The top three continued in that order until the second and final yellow flag of the race came out on lap 24 when Bobby Blake suffered a flat tire. He went pit side but returned with new rubber in time for the restart.

Bookmiller was not able to run and hide from Morris and Lilley after the restart but had plenty of “reserve” to take a relatively easy win admitting in victory lane that his old tires “were giving up a bit.”

Morris, who indicated his well-worn engine was holding him back, was elated with finishing second. “I should have my new engine ready for the next race, then we’ll be ready to get to the checker first,” said Morris. Lilley was also happy with his third place run after an altercation between he and Morris during the first race of the year put him out of the running while leading.

Back behind the wheel of his own car, James Wright III had a steady run for fourth while Pope settled for fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Kevin Macy, Cannon, Harold Crooms, Colin Cabre and Grimm.

All fifteen starters were still running at the end. Blake’s tire troubles just added to a frustrating night for him. After winning here on opening night, Blake struggled all race long and eventually finished dead last.

The Legend Cars were out in force for their first racing of 2010 with five drivers seeing their first-ever Legends racing action at the track.

Jake Perkins won the first heat and sat on the pole for the feature. That was pretty much all she wrote as “No Brake Jake” set the pace all 25 laps although he did have constant pressure from Devin McLeod. Gerald White, Jr.

was a close third trailed by Justin Brown and Dave Gleason. Second heat winner Mason Ketterman took the checker in sixth with Lynn Wiles, John Inman, Doug Hall and Mike Gleason completing the top ten.

The Street Stocks put on a crowd-pleasing show. Only one caution flag slowed the pace on lap three as Kyle Hall suffered a flat tire while riding in the top five.

Jeff Waterman grabbed the early lead and appeared to possibly be on his way to a second consecutive win but his car seemed to go away on him during the last few laps. James Wright III got around Waterman and sped to his second win of the year.

Dave Colpritt also passed Waterman and came home second while Waterman eventually wound up third. Bobby Mobley took the checker in the show spot but was DQ’d in tech. Matt McCrary was fourth and Chuck Harrison, Jr. fifth. Heat wins went to Wright III and Waterman.

Fred Harrison, Jr. became the third different winner in three weeks as the defending class champion took the win in the Mini Stock feature. After winning the second heat, Harrison chased first heat winner Chris Narramore, Sr. for several laps before eventually making the winning pass. Chris Spring got by Narramore late in the going and took second while Narramore held on for third in front of Donnie Guy and Tony Davidson.

The tech area, sometimes referred to as “Ted Head’s Shed,” was a busy place again Saturday night. Apparent V-8 Bomber winner Chis McGivern was set down for a rules infraction. That gave Josh Borem his third straight win in the class, two of which have come after the car that took the checker first was disqualified. “Guess it pays to be legal,” said Borem.

Larry Chumney, Sr. took second while Matt Bozeman ended up third after apparent third and fourth place finishers Dustin Strott and Paul Bookmiller were DQ’d for rough driving. Fourth eventually went to Kevin Barton with Donnie King fifth. Buddy Phillips, Jr. and McGivern won the heat races.

After heat winner Matt Johns hit the wall, Brian Tyre drove to what he thought was an easy Scrambler win. However his car, as well as that of second place Brandon Henault, were disqualified moving Dave Canfield to the winners circle. Jeremy Watts would take second with Johns third and Scott Russ fourth.

Johnathan Guy made yet another runaway of the Dwarf Car competition. The 2009 champion, who is moving up to the Late Models this year, led all the way to win over Bo Bass, heat winner Sonny O’Sullivan, Johnny Bass and Terry Taylor.

Chris Scott wins Dan Benoit Memorial Road Warrior feature at CCMP

By: Melanie Beckner Punta Gorda, FL… It was a busy night of racing this past Saturday night at the Charlotte County Motorsports Park, with Sportsman, Fastrucks, Florida Suncoast Outlaw Street Stocks and Juniors Trim Shop Road Warriors all running fifty lap features.

The first feature race of the evening was the twenty five lap, Pro 4 race with Dylan Bigley leading the field to the start. Dylan Bigley immediately grabbed the top spot. Mark Davis brought out the first caution when a loose wheel on his car brought out the yellow flag on lap five.

On the restart Bigley, continued where he had left off to only have the caution wave again a lap later when Mark Davis, this time spun his car around in turn two. The field would only get one lap in again when the caution came out for the spinning car of Chelsea Lajoie in turn three. It appeared that something has broke on her car and whipped her around.

Dylan Bigley remained out front with the battle heating up for the second position between Ralph Gross and Stuart Vandevender. The two made contact in turn two on lap twelve that flattened both tires on both drivers cars which caused Vandevender to spin his car around in turn four. Dylan Bigley went on to take the win with Derrick Horton in second and Ryan Collver finishing in third.

2009 Sportsman points Champion, Timmy Lowe started on the pole for the fifty lap Sportsman feature. As the green flag waved Lowe and Aaron Williamson battled for the lead with Williamson clearing Lowe for the position by the completion of lap one. Williamson pulled away from the pack and had a good lead when the first caution came out for debris on lap thirteen.

On the restart Josh calvert, spun his car around on the front stretch. The restart was good with Williamson pulling away from everyone else. While Aaron Williamson walked away from the others, the battle for second through the fourth position was heating up with Timmy Lowe, David Williamson and Brian Richardson.

The three drivers battled hard lap after lap. The next caution came out on lap thirty two with Bill Vandevender spinning out in turn four. Two laps later the final caution came out for Josh Calvert spinning out on the backstretch.

Aaron Williamson cruised to the victory with Brian Richard coming in second and Timmy Lowe rounding out the top three positions.

Logan Leonard was the pole sitter for the Second Annual Dan Benoit Memorial, Juniors Trim Shop Road Warrior feature. Dan Benoit raced in the Road Warrior division for several years, before dieing from cancer two years ago. Two of Dan’s sons, Codey and Billy were in the field for the fifty lap feature.

When the green flag dropped it was Logan Leonard that wheeled his car to the front. The first caution waved on lap twelve when Bryan Boxell looped his car in turn one. Ten laps later James Dellea and Jarrett Cornell where battling for position when the two got together on the front stretch and spun out. Logan Leonard, still was leading when the race resumed with Randy Kile and Chris Scott battling for the second position.

With two laps remaining Logan Leonard, who was still leading lost control of his car coming out of turn four and spun out drawing the final caution. Since the spin was unassisted, Leonard was sent to the rear of the lead lap cars and handed the lead over to Chris Scott.

On the final lap the race for the third position was heating up between Rick Reed, Mike Crooks and Chris Loney. Going into turn two there was contact between Loney and Crooks cars and again going into turn four that sent Loney spinning to the top of turn four. At the line it was Chris Scott who got to celebrate the win with Randy Kile finishing in second and Rick Reed took the third position.

The Fastrucks made there first appearance for the 2010 season with Phil Morrison on the pole for the fifty lap feature. Morrison took the early lead before Steven Darvalics challenged Morrison for the position on lap five. The two raced door handle to door handle before Darvalics ultimately gained the lead from Morrison.

The race ran caution free until lap twenty two when something broke off of Phil Morrison’s truck and brought out the caution. On the restart Jimmy Gill spun out on the frontstretch. The rest of the race ran cautionless with Steven Darvalics taking the win with Jimmy GIll and Anthony Sergi completing the top three spots.

Jamie Castleberry sat on the pole for the fifty lap Florida Suncoast Outlaw Street Stock feature. Jim Meiser took the lead coming out of turn two and led until lap eight before Shane Leonard over took the position from Meiser.

The first caution came out on lap ten after Larry Braswell drove into the side of Shane Leonard going into turn two that sent both cars spinning.
On the restart Danny Daniels Jr took the lead away from Shane Leonard. Daniels led until lap eighteen when Shane Leonard re-took the lead.

At the half way point Danny Daniels Jr. spun out in turn two. Larry Braswell brought out the fianl caution after he almost hit the turn four wall head on, Thankfully Braswell had good brakes! Shane Leonard went on to claim the victory with Danny Daniels Jr in second and Jim Meiser was third.

The Fab 4’s were the final race of the evening with Linda Badali leading the field to the start of the twenty five lap race. Badali led the first lap with the caution coming out after the lap was completed for the spinning car of Nick Callin in turn four.

On the restart Jason McGonnell took over the lead from Badali. The next caution came out on lap four for the spinning car of Linda Badali, who had spun out in turn four. Corey Malinowski took over the top spot from Jason McGonnell on the restart.

Lap eighteen saw the final caution of the night, after Phillip Ellis had gotten into the back of Paul Richards Jr going into turn one and sent Richards Jr. spinning. Corey Malinowski took home the win with Paul Richards Jr in second and Jason McGonnell finishing in third.

Wayne Anderson Makes It Two in a Row for FAST at Orlando SpeedWorld

Orlando Speedworld; Orlando, Florida: Race scheduled for Saturday, March 6, 2010. For the second consecutive event, the weather was perfect for racing as the Sunoco Florida All Stars Tour traveled to Orlando Speedworld for the running of the Discount Propane 100. A great field of 31 Super Late Model, Limited Late Model, and Crate Late Model entries took qualifying laps, with Series Rookie Randy Anderson of Wildwood setting fast time of 13.800 (97.826 mph) in the No. 86 Airframe International Chevrolet. Lakeland’s Steve Doror qualified second in the No. 110 RaceCar Engineering entry, with Tyler Laing in the No. 39, Dalton Zehr in the No. 119, AJ Corelli in the No. 2, and Wayne Anderson in the No. 84 rounding the top 6 spots. Laing was later disqualified at Tech Inspection, moving Austin Kirkpatrick into the sixth qualifying spot.

B-Main Results

Sunoco FAST rules call for cars qualifying lower than the top 24 to compete in a B-Main feature. With Laing moving to the B-Main, the field for the 25-lap B-Main was set at seven cars. David Weaver, starting on the pole, was followed by Jeremy Gerstner, Daniel Maddox, Mike Cenzi, Perry Lovelady, Cody Lane, and Tyler Laing. Weaver held the point for the first 14 laps, with Laing moving taking the lead and holding it through the remaining laps for the win.

Wayne Anderson led all 100 laps of the event, which was slowed seven times by cautions, with the most serious incident occurring on lap 25 when Todd Allen and Dalton Zehr got together coming off turn 2, with Dalton’s car riding the wall on the backstretch before landing on its side with a fire in the engine compartment. There were no injuries. Late in the race, Steve Dorer mounted a furious charge, including a last lap sprint to the outside that brought him to the finish line just three feet short of Anderson. Austin Kirkpatrick finished third, followed by CJ Calabrese and JR McMickle rounding out the top five. Kirkpatrick took Rookie of the Race honors. Surprises Abound At Ocala Speedway Opener

by BJ Cavin

Race fans and racers braved a frosty Florida night as they gathered to reopen the historic Ocala Speedway for another exciting season of racing, and Florida’s oldest speedway did not disappoint.  The Sunoco United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series was also kicking off their season as a part of the festivities at Ocala, as were Ocala’s own Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Mini Stocks.  The fans and racers also collected over $260 to pass along to the founder and operator of Karnac.com and Real Racin’ USA, Jack Smith.  Smith has recently been undergoing extensive surgery and was diagnosed with cancer.

Much of the attention on the night went to the Sunoco United Dirt Late Models as the new and improved version of the racing series debuted.  The Ocala race officially was part of the new Southern division of the UDLMCS, but racers from the north also participated.  Also garnering plenty of attention was the newly formed team included Ocala’s own Ivedent Lloyd and Darrell Padgett.  That attention to this Roush-Yates powered team would last well into the early morning hours after Ivedent Lloyd wasted no time in setting the bar high, as he set fast time in qualifying with a blistering 16.275 on his second solo lap. HOT ACTION ON A COLD, COLD NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

About the only thing hot at the races Saturday night other than the racing at Auburndale Speedway were the hot dogs, hot chocolate and hot coffee which was consumed in mass quantities by a surprisingly good-sized crowd on what could only be described as a bone-chilling Central Florida evening.

The Sportsman cars made their 2010 season debut and one thing was for certain in this race… give veteran Dave Dunkin the pole and more than likely he’ll win. That’s exactly what happened although Dunkin had to use all of his years of knowledge racing on the tight third-mile to hold on for the victory.

A short field of Sportsman were made even shorter when the rear end broke on Mark Medeiros’ car during hot laps and his mount was on the trailer before sunset.

Outside pole sitter Bart Weatherford got loose on cold tires during the initial start and spun but everyone was able to avoid him. Dunkin jumped to a quick lead with Weatherford trailing once the green was displayed. But the car that was really hooked up was that of Aaron Williamson.

Williamson dusted off Weatherford and began pressuring Dunkin using everything but the figure eight track to try and get by while the “old man” in his familiar “Blue Goose” Chevy thwarted every move.

Brett Jenkins was running well but had something break on his car and he slapped the turn one wall to bring out the caution on lap 20. He was able to drive his machine to the pits but retired it for the rest of the race.

Weatherford again got loose on the restart, nearly tagged the wall and was just clipped by Austin Carr while Kyle Aflord spun to avoid getting involved. All cars restarted.

Dunkin held off a furious charge by Williamson to take the checker and add to his already huge win total at Auburndale. Weatherford came home third trailed by Carr and Alford. Dunkin also won the heat race.

Chris Spring had it all together in the Mini Stocks as he dominated both the heat and feature in what is a usually tightly-contested class.

Spring jumped out front at the outset and just drove away from the field as the race went green to checker without a yellow flag. The best race was for second as Chris Narramore, Sr., the opening night winner, held off Donnie Guy and Fred Harrison, Jr. at the stripe. Danny Pearson took the fifth spot.

Brandon Duscherer looked to have the car to beat in the Street Stocks as he took the heat race win and had the pole for the feature. However, Duscherer’s car wasn’t up to the task come feature time. He barely made it out for the start, then passsed Matt McCrary (who led the first lap) and easily stayed out front for a few laps before his machine began to falter. Jeff Waterman zipped by on lap 16 while Duscherer took his now-smoking car to the infield. Caution was displayed as a small fire was put out under the hood of Duscherer’s racer.

Waterman set the pace the remaining few laps to score a popular win. Austin Jenkins took the checker second but was set down in tech for an infraction moving McCrary up to second. Chuck Harrison, Jr. was also DQ’d after the race actually giving third spot to Duscherer.

Chris Narramore, Jr. was out with a beautiful new V-8 Bomber and led all the way to apparently win the race, but the heavy hand of the tech man took the win away. That gave Josh Borem his second win in a row after he though he finished a distant second. Heat winner James Wright, Sr. took the runner-up spot trailed by Paul Bookmiller and Buddy Phillips, Jr.

Scrambler action saw Chelsea LaJoie hit the turn one wall nearly head-on in the heat race. She was OK, but done for the night. After winning the heat, Matt Johns also raced to victory in the feature. Brian Tyre led the early going but Johns kept up the pressure and snared the top spot on lap eight never to be headed. Tyre came home second ahead of Kimberly Gullett and Brandon Henault.

Craig Jackson actually crossed the line in fourth but became yet another driver to succumb to the pressures of post-race tech.
