WEEK #2 AT NSS LAUNCHES TECH INTO SPOTLIGHT

by Andy Sandall
(03.20.10 – New Smyrna Speedway) The fans that made their way into the New Smyrna grandstands on a glorious Spring night had no idea that week 2 of the regular season would prove to be so controversial, but one look at the results sheet showed that the rulebook changes for 2010 were well in truly in effect and crucially were being enforced. By the time the lights went off in deepest Samsula a total of 10 cars that had taken to the track had been disqualified for rules infractions, with another driver seeing his night’s work stricken from the records due to his post-race actions in showing his displeasure to his rivals after an incredible Super Stock race. The night would also see the debut of the much talked-about E-Mod cars, a brand new variation of the popular modified class designed to tackle the long-standing criticism of the need for costly motors in this division head-on.

The E-Mods would provide the second race of the night, but first out came a field of predominantly young drivers in their Pro Trucks, making their second appearance of the season. With previous week’s winner #15 Cody Blair and multiple race winner #20 Anthony Sergi both starting at the back there was the opportunity for plenty of passing ahead, and sure enough both trucks were quickly making their way up to the front as the green flag dropped. At the front #28 TJ Duke and #82 Steve Jones were fighting it out door-to-door for the lead, but Blair was quickly up to 3rd place and chasing them down.

With just 5 laps in the books Blair suddenly went high in turn 1, repeating this in turn 4 before slowing down to a crawl as he came down the back straight, coming to rest high up the banks in turn 2 for a caution. A quick trip to the pits followed, and Blair was able to rejoin the race at the back for the restart, but with just two more laps under his belt he again slowed down and came to a standstill at the top of turn 4, this time needing assistance to get back to his pit crew. This would prove to be only the opening act in what became an evening of nightmares for Blair, who had planned on racing in three divisions during the evening’s program.

Duke would power away to the lead from the restart but with just 5 trucks now in the race the field was beginning to string out around the track, and this would be down to just 4 on the 20th lap as Jones went up in smoke and headed to the pits, meaning not only a caution but a clean-up to rid the racing surface of the substances pouring from his engine. From the restart Sergi would briefly challenge Duke at the front, but he would quickly fall back leaving Duke to take the checkered flag ahead of Sergi, #8 Bobby Kennedy and the last remaining car on track, #63 Zach Curtis.

But in 2010 taking the checkered flag in first place is only the first step towards claiming the win. Immediately after the race the winner now has to pull over and have their tires checked for hardness before progressing to the winner’s circle, which Duke duly completed satisfactorily and headed to the finish line for his photographs and post-race interview. But it took just a couple more races for the news to filter out that the top three trucks had all been thrown out in the post race inspection, handing the win to 3rd place finisher Curtis, and amazingly giving 2nd place to #24 Bruce Bennett and 3rd place to Cody Blair, neither of whom made it past the halfway point of the race.

The E-Modifieds made their debut on track next, with the small field probably hinting at the number of racers waiting to see how this division develops before committing to racing, or equally likely that a number of cars are still being built after the relatively recent publishing of the 2010 rulebook. With a new division always come new faces, although most of the names were familiar in this race albeit not necessarily from the old Florida modified races. Leading off the race from pole was #59 Chris Brannon, seen predominantly in 2009 competing with William Hindman in the Strictly Stock races. Another Strictly Stock regular #93 Bruce Gayton would start on the 2nd row, while at the back of the 5-car field was #15 Cody Blair, attempting to put a disastrous Pro Truck race immediately behind him.

Brannon would use pole position to stream away into a substantial lead, bringing long-standing modified racer #40 George Murphy with him at the front. Blair would also move around into 3rd place as both Gayton and #36 David Le Beau showed themselves to be well off the pace of the leaders, but again Blair would end the race with a ‘DNF’ as his newly-built car went up in smoke on the 5th lap, leading to a caution and seeing Blair back in the pits early for a second consecutive race. Once back up to speed it was Brannon and Murphy who again took off at the front to concentrate on a battle between themselves as the race developed.

Le Beau would pull his underpowered car off the track at the halfway mark, but Gayton would continue to put miles under his belt as the race wound down. By the time the checkered flag came out Brannon would take the win by a couple of car lengths ahead of Murphy, with Gayton back nearly 2/3rds of a lap in a distant 3rd place. Of course this was a new division for the 2010 season, and so the trip to the tech shed for post-race inspection was bound to be an interesting one, and so it was that both Brannon and Gayton were found to be illegal, handing the win to Murphy with Le Beau and Blair, who racked up less than 20 laps between them, taking the points for 2nd and 3rd places.

Some more familiar cars out onto the track next, and a much fuller field as the Super Stocks lined up in pit road to be led off by the shining, newly painted #51 of Butch Herdegen, making up the front row alongside the battle-scarred #211 of Jarret Korpi. These two would immediately head off at the front of the pack once the race got underway, and the field slowly developed as the first few laps were through. Behind them the familiar names of #01 Scott Smith and #56 Bobby Holley were making great strides through the traffic to position themselves handily as the race developed,

Numerous battles would develop around the track as the laps ticked over, Herdegen and Korpi racing hard at the front as old rivals Smith and Holley jostled for position as they chased down #3 Rob Kayse, who had settled down in a comfortable 3rd position behind the leaders. Elsewhere there was plenty of action for the fans further down the track as #15 Michael Wofford raced hard with #16 David Russell for 7th, while behind them #2x Mike Amato and #86 Rich Goodrich were enjoying a tussle of their own for points that could prove crucial later in the year.

The first half of the race did little to separate the leaders, and as they passed the crossed flags from the flagstand there was just a single car length between them, with Herdegen still maintaining the slim lead over Korpi, but behind him Holley had made his way past Smith and was now chasing down Kayse in 3rd. Korpi would finally make his move on the 19th lap, going hot into turn 1 down the inside of Herdegen, and despite having to hang on for dear life as his car fought back against his aggressive entry into the corner, he was able to keep ahead as they went into the back straight and all the way around to the start line, putting Herdegen out of the lead for the first time in the race.

But Herdegen was not to be denied, and with Korpi pushing his car to the limit Herdegen knew he still had something in reserve, so with the sight of slower cars ahead of him the #51 cleverly moved to the outside groove, pinning his younger rival down on the inside as they quickly closed in on the lapped cars. Korpi had nowhere to go, and despite pushing his car as hard as he could, Herdegen pushed his car back into the lead, running perfectly to keep Korpi low and denying him a clear run at getting back ahead. With 2 laps to go Korpi had no choice and had to swing out wide and try to go even higher outside his rival, and as they came out of turn 4 for the last time the race for the finish saw Herdegen with just enough speed to hold off the #211 and take a hard-fought win in what had been a great race.

The race at the front was not the only intriguing battle during the closing laps of this feature, and behind the leaders Holley had also been using the lapped traffic to his advantage as he chased down Kayse. With nowhere to go Kayse and Holley were more than happy to make contact with each other, but in this battle of wills it was Holley that proved stronger and he sailed through the finish line to take 3rd just ahead of Kayse’s #3 car. Their battle was far from over, and on the warm-down lap Kayse decided to show Holley exactly what he thought of his driving by forcing the nose of his car hard into Holley’s rear bumper in turn 2. After a brief tussle of cars, Holley was able to continue, but Kayse was still hot, and again took a shot at Holley’s car, but this time in pit road as the tech officials checked the cars tires. For this it was no surprise that Kayse became the next driver to be announced as disqualified, this time for unsportsmanlike conduct, and it was a shame that this cast something of a cloud over what had been an incredible but clean race at the front between Herdegen and Korpi. The DQ confirmed Holley in 3rd place, pushing Smith up to 4th and seeing Russell rounding out the top 5.

Limited Late Models came out next for their feature, but this race too would start off with an incident as the fight for 3rd place between #9z Zach Donnatti and #33 Casey Caudill saw contact in turn 1 of the 3rd lap mean the cars hooked up and headed high into the turn 2 wall lked together, Donnatti taking the brunt of the impact and meaning the emergency crews had to rush onto the track to check that the young driver was alright. After a brief moment of concern he was out of his car, but his race was over for the night, although Caudill was able to continue after a trip to the pits, aided by the lengthy delay before the restart. His night would quickly be over too, lasting just 5 more laps before retiring.

Once back underway the race at the front was dominated by #9 Rich Clouser and #55 Todd Allen, although Clouser would soon make the race his own and move off into a substantial lead. Behind him Allen would be briefly challenged by #98 Bobby Joe Woodley, but this challenge wouldn’t last for long and soon the front 3 cars had plenty of distance between them. Elsewhere the crowd was treated to the return of the popular #4 Cynthia Strahley, making a rare appearance back out on the track but showing enough pace to suggest that it would take just a few races for her to be fully competitive again.

With green flag laps now being put in the books for posterity, Allen would slightly close the gap on Clouser but still not threaten his lead, and the checkered flag was taken by Clouser by ½ the length of the straight ahead of Allen, with Woodley an equal distance behind him in 3rd. The #20 of Anthony Sergi was well behind in 4th, and the last remaining car on track was the lapped #7 of Billon Jackson. The infamous tech shed again proved pivotal in the final result of this race, and although both Clouser and Allen sailed through with no issues, the cars of Woodley, Sergi and Jackson were all thrown out giving 3rd place to Strahley ahead of Caudill and the luckless Donatti.

A brief intermission would follow, and then the Sportman division would start the second half of the show, a week after #111 Donnie Williams and #23 Mike Pletka had kicked the season off with an incredible battle that saw Williams edge out his friend and rival in a final lap race to the finish where neither car had let the other out of its shadow for the entire 25 laps. For their second race of the season it was Williams and Pletka who again made the running up at the front, but this time Pletka was able to take the advantage and run with clear track ahead of him. Williams would be briefly challenged by #3 James Frisbie before pulling clear, while #45A Adam Soukup was enjoying track time at the rear of the field after handling problems in afternoon practice combined with still running the gear from his previous night’s trip to Orlando Speedworld meant he was never likely to threaten the leaders.

By half distance in the race Williams had got within a car length of Pletka, well ahead of Frisbie in 3rd place and with Soukup already a lap down, but a sideways slide out of turn 2 would cost him momentum and see him slowly drop back to give a gap between himself and the leader that Pletka would not surrender. The 2009 champion in the #23 car would take the checkered flag ahead of Williams, putting the two drivers back on equal points in the early standings of their division championship.

The Sportsman cars would be replaced on track by the Mini Stocks, a division that could possibly give Cody Blair a happy ending to what had been a disastrous night’s racing so far. Starting on the second row, Blair wasted no time in coming around into 2nd place, chasing down #8x Robbie Yoakam who had sped away into an early lead. Yoakam and Blair would quickly be well ahead of #09 Todd Haught in 3rd and clear of the field, but Blair’s night would soon turn into an absolute nightmare as again just 5 laps into the race his car started pushing high into the turns and dropping back off the pace and back to the rear of the field. Blair would take a couple more laps around the track in the vain hope that the car would somehow sort itself out and get back up to speed, but with Yoakam now half a lap ahead of his competitors, Blair limped back into the pits for his 3rd DNF of the night, although ironically – thanks to the tech inspectors – with the points for 2 third place finishes under his belt!

Back on the track Yoakam was significantly faster than his rivals and would take the checkered flag over half a lap ahead of the #19 Rick Maguire in 2nd place. Maguire had provided the race’s main entertainment thanks to a long battle with Haught for the runners up spot, while the previous week’s winner #23 Wayne Wells came home 4th after catching the battle ahead of him in the closing laps and briefly challenging for a higher finish.

Just the Strictly Stock cars left to race and finish off the night, but their night got off to a spectacular opening at the #77 of Buddy Rainey came out of turn 4 for the start with a magnificent plume of smoke, reminiscent of a classic 1930s steam locomotive, pouring from its hood. Rainey would quickly pull back into the pits, but the track would require an extensive clean up before the pace truck was happy that a restart could be attempted.

Once underway the early running was made by #35 Chuck Hill, but behind him the near-identical SADE cars #60 Gino Tuminello, #13 Tony Candolino and the #9, formerly raced by Chris Brannon, who had earlier been disqualified after winning the E-Modified race, but tonight being driven by his father, David, were moving up to challenge. Of these cars it was Brannon, making his first ever appearance in a race at New Smyrna, who was showing the most speed and control, and he was shortly around the others and out into the lead, powering around Hill with barely 5 laps gone.

Brannon would pull away at the front and be totally in control of the race while Tuminello and Candolino provided the spectacle as they fought hard for 2nd place. Both cars took their turns leading this fight before Candolino overcooked it in turn 4 of the 15th lap, having to wrestle his car back under control and dropping back in the process. When the checkered flags were thrown to signal the end of the 2nd week of action it was Brannon who took a convincing win ahead of Tuminello, with Candolino out of the picture in 3rd place ahead of the dependable #21M of Maureen Dahm in 4th.

But it was entirely fitting on this night of multiple disqualifications that the night should end with another overturned win, this time seeing Brannon disqualified as the technical inspectors quickly discovered his car was lacking any rear brakes! And so the night drew to a close with a miserable night for the Brannon family, a miserable night for the Sergi family after their son Anthony was disqualified from both of his races, and perhaps the biggest cloud of the night hanging over Cody Blair, who had taken three cars onto the track in three different divisions and had failed to finish a single race. For these three racers, week three of the season simply couldn’t come around quickly enough.

Josh Peacock wins again in Racecar Engineering Late Models at East Bay

By: Jason Loughren
3/20/2010

Fans and drivers gathered at East Bay Raceway Park Saturday guaranteed to see their own version of March Madness as around 100 cars signed in ready to go. The action was fast and furious as another great crowd packed the grandstand at the Clay by the Bay on Cutter Power Equipment Night.

Eighteen cars started the 15-lap Street Stock feature event. Ed Hill started on the poll and led the early laps. Thomas Pratt ran near the front the entire race and battled Hill and Donnie Reed for the lead on a late lap caution restart.

After taking the lead on the restart, Pratt won the race in convincing style. Reed started 4th and finished 2nd. Pole sitter Hill finished 3rd. James Hook started last and finished 4th with a strong run. Buck Woodhouse rounded out the top-5. Reed and Pratt won the heat races.

The Limited Late Models made their first run of the young season as full field of cars took the green flag. The action was frantic during the early laps as William Hampton, Alex Boerner, Forrest Gough and JR Prather, Jr. battled at the front of the field. A lap 8 red flag was brought out as William Hampton’s fuel cell ruptured in turn 3 after heavy contact from the cars driven by Thomas Scott and Tommy Evonosky.

A great job was done by the track safety crew to quickly and safely remove the spilled racing fuel from the racing surface. Tim Powers took the lead after the mayhem on lap 8 and was able to hold off the hard charging Phillip Cobb to take the win. Cobb started in the 14th position and finished 2nd. Alex Boerner ran in the top-5 all race and finished 3rd. Dan Darnell and John Wilson rounded out the top-5. Prather, Jr. and Gough won the heat races.

In the Racecar Engineering Late Models Josh Peacock won his second feature event of the season after starting in the 6th position. Peacock battled with Philip Cobb for the win as the laps wound down. Cobb finished 2nd. Bryan Bernhardt finished 3rd after starting 8th. The pole sitter Mavrick Varnadore finished 4th. Paul Gibbs hung around the top-5 all night long and finished 5th. Bernhardt and Dennis Williams won the heat races.

Twenty nine Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers took the green flag for their 15 lap feature event. Roberto Morfin, Jr. was able to hold off the hard charging Robert Kissam to take the win. Kissam appeared to have a 2nd place finish but was disqualified. Elliot Morgan was the hard charger of the night, started 14th and worked his way to a 2nd place finish. Jim Baker had a solid run and finished 3rd. Kever Raulerson finished 4th and Robert Purcell rounded out the top-5. Bubba Puyear, Morfin, Jr. and Robert Kissam won the heat races.

The newest class of racing at East Bay the Dirt Daubers continued to thrive as all time high of 13 cars hit the wet track. Cal Lange was credited with the win in the Dirt Daubers after four other cars were disqualified post race inspection.
ASA Sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, March 27, 2010. The Racecar Engineering Late Models, Limited Late Models, Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, Street Stocks, Outlaw 4’s and Old Time Mods will be in action. OCALA, FL – March 19, 2010 – Darrell Lanigan didn’t catch his breath until reaching Victory Lane on Friday night at Ocala Speedway.

In a tense battle that had a standing-room-only crowd cheering, Lanigan repelled several rivals to capture the inaugural 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main at the unique three-eighths-mile oval in central Florida.

“That was pretty exciting,” said Lanigan, who wasn’t headed after grabbing the lead on lap three but never got far enough ahead to relax. “This is a real tricky racetrack, so all it took was one mistake and somebody was gonna pass you. Luckily we were just able to hold on.” (more…)

Ben Kennedy tops Super Late Models at Orlando SpeedWorld

SUPER LATE MODELS HIGHLIGHT WK #2 AT OSW

by Andy Sandall

(03.19.10 – Orlando Speedworld)
Racing came back to Orlando Speedworld with a bang on Friday night as the track re-opened for the 2010 season a week later than scheduled thanks to the previous week’s unseasonally heavy rain. Of course the rain had been the story of the 2009 season, at one point forcing FASCAR officials to call a temporary halt to the schedule and wait out the weather before coming back later in the year, but thankfully for the fans desperate to get back their weekly Friday night racing fix the conditions were perfect in Bithlo and their favorite drivers were quickly back into the groove and renewing old rivalries as well as setting up new stories to play out over the coming months.

As always with regular season action at Orlando Speedworld the spectators who take their seats early get an extra race as they watch the drivers of tomorrow taking their first steps up the racing ladder in the Bandolero cars. With 4 of these cars out on track tonight, representing the two age groups that compete together in this division, the first racing action of the 2010 season saw three of the four cars take the green flag and head into the first turn 3-wide on cold tires! Of course this led to a pile-up in the first corner, but thankfully all the cars could continue and the race was soon underway. The main action in the race would be provided by #55 Michael Held and #13 Ryan Shattack, with Shattack eventually taking the win, but not before a big accident on the final lap as Held lost control in turn 2, forcing #30 Noah Cornman to go wide to take avoiding action, only to be t-boned by Held’s car as he went past on the high side. Thankfully both drivers were OK and the result was awarded with Shattack as the winner and Held taking second ahead of Cornman, and a special mention for #00 Brandon Lynch coming home 3rd in his first ever race.

The full-size cars would soon be out on the track in the shape of the Sportsman racers, a division that thank to the rule changes now puts cars of all kinds of shapes and body styles out onto the track to race together. This race quickly developed into two battles going around the track separately as pole-sitter #45A Adam Soukup dropped back from the green flag and into an intriguing race with #92 Ted Head, while a rivalry from the 2009 season was quickly being re-engaged up at the front between #20 Justin Reynolds and #66 Andy Nicholls. Once #11 KC Nicholson had pulled off the track with mechanical issues on the 4th lap to bring out a caution, the race ran under the green flag for the rest of the way and ended with Reynolds a clear winner by half a lap ahead of Nicholls, and Head edging out Soukup for a well-earned 3rd place.

The Mini Stocks were next up on the track, with another of 2009’s most intense rivalries kicking off again, this time between #92 Pedie Allison and #31 David Russell who had gone into the final race of the previous year level on points before Russell clinched the track championship with a win in that last race. Russell would start this race from the front, alongside #15 Casey Loeffler, but Allison was quickly up to the front from the 2nd row and chasing down his rival. Joining the party was #97 Kelly Jarrett who announced his intentions to keep this from being a two-horse race by tracking down Russell and taking 2nd place as the race reached halfway following several laps that saw the top 3 runners racing bumper to bumper. A spin for Loeffler brought the pace truck back out with 5 laps to go and set up a sprint for the finish that saw Allison and Jarrett move away at the head of the field and race hard for the remaining laps, but Jarrett’s last lap dive for the line out of turn 4 wasn’t enough and Allison was able to hold him off by a nose to take the early lead in this division. Now with three fast cars running at the front, and hopefully the return of always dangerous #85 Rex Hollinger, who missed this race courtesy of mechanical issues, for next week’s action, the opening week of the season set up what should prove to be an intriguing and close chase for the Mini Stock championship in 2010.

Legends cars would be the next division to begin their 2010 campaigns, with one of the main storylines in this race being the appearance of #8 Donovan Ponder for his first Legends race having learned his trade racing Bandoleros at Orlando and now stepping up to the next level. He announced his arrival with a bang, quickly taking the lead and leaving #1 Russ Thomson and #12 Critter Saile to fight it out for 2nd place behind him. Saile would get caught up in this battle for the first part of the race, but eventually made his move stick and set off in pursuit of Ponder, catching him and then passing him as the 9th lap came around and being well ahead of the field as the crossed flags were shown to indicate the halfway point of the race.

A spin for Ponder out of turn 4 on the 15th lap would bunch the cars back together again and put the young driver at the back of the pack for the restart, and Saile made no mistake once the pace truck pulled off the track to power away and put a big gap between himself and his rivals. Well behind the leader Thomson and #6 Jim Rix were fighting hard for 2nd place, with #51x Roger Englund and Ponder close behind them. As the cars took the signal for 5 laps to go Thomson went wide in turn 3 letting Rix and Ponder underneath him, but with an unsettled car in his hands Thomson lost control in turn 1 of the next lap, spinning out and taking Englund with him up the banks and into the outer wall. After a brief break to get the stricken cars off the track on the back of the flatbed wrecker truck the race resumed with just 3 laps to go, and Saile made no mistake to win the race handily ahead of Ponder, who had also put a decent gap between himself and Rix.

Cars from the other end of the spectrum to the Legends would be out for their feature after a brief intermission, as the Super Late Models made their first appearance of the season at Orlando for a 35 lap feature. The fans in the grandstands also received an unexpected treat as the cars made their way out onto the track and a familiar car was spotted – the #92 of the legendary Dickie Anderson, making his first competitive race appearance for some time, and quickly showing the ability and will to win that made him so famous. In fact he was soon up to speed and despite starting in 6th place he was quickly challenging #96 Ben Kennedy, himself making his first regular season SLM start after a great year in the Pro Trucks in 2009, for 2nd place. At the front was #18 Jared Allison, who had started on the front row and was quickly out into a healthy lead.

A spin for #13 Bob Greene at the back of the field early on brought out the caution flags, but the restart saw contact between Kennedy and #7 Vince Keeler in turn 3 that turned Keeler and forced the cars behind him into taking avoiding action. Although Keeler was able to rejoin the race and most cars successfully made their way around the wreck, #02 Scott Bramlett was not so lucky and his night was over after hitting the stricken turned car. A second restart was more successful, as Allison moved away at the front with Kennedy for company, and Anderson quickly dispatching #22 David King to take 3rd place with a terrific lowside pass in turn 3.

Another spin for Greene at the rear bunched the cars back together and this time Allison would soon be facing an altogether different proposition as Kennedy quickly fell prey to Anderson and #407 Jason Vail, leaving the veteran Anderson looming very large in Allison’s mirrors up at the front. Kennedy would immediately fight back and engage in battle with Vail, but as a young driver with professional aspirations he hopefully took the opportunity to look ahead and watch Anderson masterfully move forward and begin applying pressure to Allison. Soon the race between Anderson and Allison was developing into a classic, with the wily old #92 using every trick in his extensive arsenal to get past the car in front and take the lead.

As the cars hit the halfway mark Anderson began to show his nose to Allison on the way into turn 3, giving the leader a nudge to let him know he was there, but Allison responded well and regained control of his car to keep his position. The following lap Anderson tried the same move again, moving even further alongside the leader in turn 4, but this time Allison was ready for him and refused to give up his spot. Door-to-door contact coming out of the turn could only have one outcome, and both cars pushed up into the front straight wall, with Anderson turning around to sit against the wall facing back towards turn 4. The rest of the field reacted quickly to avoid the cars, and Allison was able to pull clear of Anderson’s car and return to the pack waiting for the restart, albeit at the back of the field, but Anderson’s night was over. For the fans it had been a wonderful reminder of why Dickie Anderson had become such a legend of Florida racing as he was immediately competitive despite such a lengthy period out of the driver’s seat. But there was one last treat for the spectators as another of his famous traits was on display, walking across the track and letting Allison know exactly what he thought of his defensive move as the #18 was called over by officials under caution and slowed to halt alongside Anderson’s car being put onto the wrecker!

This caution would put Kennedy at the front of the restart alongside Vail, and these two would take the race back to green with a brief tussle for the lead that saw Kennedy pull slightly clear as Allison took just 2 laps to move from the rear back up to 3rd place. With a great opportunity to take a debut win ahead of him, Kennedy showed great maturity to finish the race with good speed and avoiding any trouble around him, taking the checkered flag and the 100 championship points on offer. Behind him lapped traffic had slowed Vail and allowed Allison to close in on him, but the #407 was able to keep his head and claim 2nd place, with Allison just behind in 3rd.

The penultimate race of the night saw the Super Stocks taking to the racing surface for a 25-lap feature that was dominated by the #16D of David Gould. Having spent the off-season working on his motor, Gould was quickly putting on a show that identified him as the early season favorite for the championship as he immediately raced away into the lead and put a sizeable gap between himself and the field. Only #23 Shannon Kelly was able to mount anything like a challenge before his practice session woes that had seen him spin out 3 times during afternoon testing came back to haunt and a last lap spin cost him 2nd place as #35 Cody Keeler and #316 Joe Bandur came through to take 2nd and 3rd places respectively. By this point Gould was unassailable at the front, and he cruised to the win, leading to a bizarre seen as he came around to victory lane, climbing out of his car to take the crowd’s applause as the fire crew rushed over to extinguish the flames coming from under his hood that he could not see! An errant piece of tire debris catching fire on his exhaust manifold was the culprit, but fans were treated to the sight of Gould climbing through his window, checkered flag in hand, as the emergency crews frantically tried to pull his hood pins out to put the fire out!

Closing the evening out came the Strictly Stocks, and a healthy number of new cars and drivers took to the track with many getting their first taste of oval track racing in this entry level division. But it was one of the old hands who soon had the race under control as the familiar red #8 Ford Probe of former track champion Neil Kirby was quickly into the lead, and not in any mood to surrender it. Making a good job of chasing him was you Wes Railing in the #51, but his night came to a premature end at the halfway point as problems in turn 4 saw him sail high up to the wall, only to shoot back down across the track and down into the infield with a plume of steam pouring from his engine as he sat helpless and waiting to return to the pits. With laps ticking over Kirby made no mistakes and he soon crossed the line to be the night’s final winner ahead of #8x Luis Guillen Jr, the only car left on the track not to be lapped by a dominant Kirby.

Ted Dufee was the polesitter for the twenty five lap, TQ Miget feature. Durfee immediately took his car to the front. The only caution to come out was on lap fifteen when Jack Duffy, who was running in the second position, spun his car around in turn four. On the restart Ted Durfee continued where he had left off and held a half track lead from the others. Ted Durfee cruised to the victory with Jack Duffy coming back to finish in second and Jay Stutz was third.

The Dwarf cars were next to take on the 3/8th mile oval with Bo Bass on the pole for the twenty five lap race. Bass grabbed the lead at the start of the race with the Hubbard family behind him battling for the second and third positions. The entire race ran caution free until lap twenty four when Larry Hubbard Sr. spun coming out of turn four, setting up a green and checkered finish.

Bo Bass took the win with Larry Hubbard Jr. in second and Larry Hubbard III finishing in third.

The most anticipated race of the evening was up next with Bryan Riddle leading the field to the start of the thirty lap feature. Then four laps later Channing Conley brought out the caution after he spun on the backstretch. On the restart of lap eighteen, Mark Gimmler spun out in turn three.

Channing Conley brought out the caution again on lap twenty one after his spin on the frontstretch.

On the restart Keith Butler had a good run coming out of turn four and was side by side for the lead with Jimmy Alves Jr. for the lead. The two made contact and sent both up the track on the front stretch staking up the rest of the field behind them. Gary Gimmler had no where to go and flew over Butler’s car. All drivers were fine, but all were done for the evening.

Paul Richards Sr. spun out in turn four and collected Corey Malinowski and Jeremy Perkins. The rest of the race ran caution less with John Pummel Jr claiming his first win of the year. Dylan Bigley and Stuart Vandevender completed the top three positions.

Russell Rolls with Second Hoosier Elite Win

By Rick Anges

Bradenton, Fl. The Hoosier Elite Series kicked off the ASA sanctioned racing action at “The High Banks” of Desoto Super Speedway with qualifying.

’09 Champion Anthony Campi held the fast time with a 14:715 run. That was until Tim Russell, the defending Icebreaker champ blistered the 3/8-mile with a lap of 14:560.

Campi followed Russell with second fast time. Third quick went to Jessie Dutilly followed by Blake Koch and Joe Boyd for the top five. The field was inverted the top 4 spots putting Blake Koch on the pole and Russell on the outside of the second row.

When the green waved it was Koch jumping into the top spot. Russell wasted no time and moved up into the second position and closed in the leader. Koch looked good as fended off Russell’s challenges for the lead.

Russell, the son of David Russell, knows his way around the Bradenton racetrack. He dominated here when he campaigned a Limited Late Model.

Koch who has competed in several different NASCAR series and ARCA slipped up as he came out of turn two allowing Russell to make the move and take over the top spot.

Russell would never look back taking his second H.E.S. win of the 2010 season. Koch came home in a solid second. Third went to Desoto veteran racer Jessie Dutilly in the former Joe Boyd ride. Boyd meanwhile would follow his old ride across the stripe in fourth with Robert “ShowTime” Yoho rounding out the top five.

DUNKIN DOES IT AGAIN IN AUBURNDALE SPORTSMAN ACTION

by Dave Westerman

Another good crowd of fans braved a somewhat chilly and very breezy night to enjoy some great action Saturday at Auburndale Speedway.

Veteran driver Dave Dunkin just seems to keep improving with age as he scored his second straight win in the Sportsman class. Heat winner Mark Medieros lined up on the pole and led the first three laps of the feature before Dunkin slipped by. Medieros never lost touch with the leader though and made a race of it as Dunkin’s car got very loose off the corners in the late stages of the race.

Dunkin’s years of experience got him to the checker first with Medieros a close second followed by Austin Carr, Chuck Harrison and Kyle Alford.
The Southeastern Champ Kart Series made its first appearance of the year with 18 karts signing it to do battle. Phil Harp led the majority of the race but some late cautions bunched up the field and made for a wide-open race to the checker.

When all was said and done, Dustin Chisholm ended up in victory lane trailed by Tim Simmons, Kenner Brown III, Dennis Mace and Romay Venta. Simmons and Joey Coaxum were the heat race winners.

The Street Stock feature was a real heartbreaker for rookie driver Matt McCrary who moved up from the Scrambler class this year. McCrary won the heat race and was running away with the feature when he spun all by himself coming off turn four on lap 14. A lap later, he got tangled up with another car and spun in the same spot.

Dave Colpritt gained the advantage at that point and held off a late charge by James Wright III to claim his first win of the year as some late-race shenanigans saw three drivers DQ’d for rough driving. McCrary managed to come back up to third at the finish while Andy Harvard sped past a final lap altercation between Jeff Waterman, Ken Lawrence and Cody McDuffie to get fourth spot. Waterman wound up fifth.

Point leader Chris Spring passed early leader Donnie Guy and sped to his second win of the year in the Mini Stocks in a race that ran without a caution flag. Fred Harrison, Jr. made a late charge to get second spot with Guy third, Randy King fourth and Tony Davidson fifth.

Once again, the apparent winner of the V-8 Bomber feature was set down in tech, this time for a controversial weight infraction penalty. Chris Narramore, Jr. crossed the stripe first after leading from lap four however the win was disallowed. The only thing different in the outcome this time was that Josh Borem didn’t win… this time it was Larry Chumney who netted the victory with Borem second. Finishing third through fifth were James Wright II, newcomer T.J. McLean and Brian Harbin.

It was quite a night for Jason Rendell in the Modified Mini Stocks. Rendell had worked it out with track owner Rex Guy to have the Mod Minis run their feature last on the card so he could run the feature at Citrus County Speedway where he was leading the points and the class was slated to be the first feature of the evening.

After finishing sixth at Citrus, Rendell made the hour-and-a-half trip to Auburndale arriving just in time to join the tail end of the feaure line-up.
Heat winner Mike Sweet led the opening five laps but Rendell was flying and took the point never to be headed in another green-to-checker race. Rendell is now two-for-two at Auburndale this year. Sweet took second followed by Scotty Sharpe, Dennis Jones and Jessica Robbins.

Scrambler action saw Reggie Ware lead all the way to take the win over heat winner Ashton Hunt, Kimberly Gullett and Dave Canfield.

Next weeks Special event will be the Fast Late Model Series. Weekend events will start on Friday Morning. Gates opening at 10AM with practice starting at 2PM. All classes are invited to practice. The Soggy Bottom Bait Shop Boys will play from 8 to 11PM. Cost is $15.00 a person and all race fans are welcome to come in the pits. There will be free Sonny’s BBQ and two kegs of beer plus sodas and water.
