SCOFIELD CLEANS UP IN WILD F.A.S.T LATE MODEL RACE AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

It was the biggest night of the year Saturday evening at Auburndale Speedway. The weather was great, the stands were packed and the pit area was jammed with 116 cars set to do battle.

Twenty-four Late Model teams signed in for the first-ever Florida All Stars Tour race at Auburndale and Plant City’s Jeff Scofield quickly made everyone take notice as he blistered the track with a lap of 13.37 seconds in qualifying. Young Jason Vail of Clermont was second quick at 13.46 with FAST Tour point leader Wayne Anderson third quick at 13.50 followed by Kevin Ingram at 13.53. Ron Lofquist and Tyler Laing tied for fifth quick time at 13.60.

Time Trials were red flagged near the mid point for a violent crash involving local favorite David King. King had just taken the green flag for his qualifying attempt when the throttle apparently hung wide open and he smashed into the turn one wall. The top-notch construction of his racer was evident as King quickly scampered out unscathed although the front end of his machine was shoved in a couple of feet. (more…)

Gamble and Barsness Make It Two In a Row at Volusia Speedway Park

Barberville, FL (March 21, 2010) It was a perfect Saturday evening at Volusia Speedway Park as the second race night of the 2010 season took place. Fans and racers welcomed spring and the warmer temps.

Heat races were run with Jason Davis and Darell Padgett taking the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Model wins. Aaron Barsness and Corey Holley take the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman heat wins. The Budweiser (Quality Brands) Modifieds saw Jeff Matthews and Larry Burkins take the heat wins. The Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks saw Mike Eubanks and Trevor Gamble take those heat wins.

Intermission was especially fun for the kids as two basketball goals were towed onto the track for the kids vs. the drivers. Kids participating in Volusia’s March Madness were Cameron Brevveman 10 years old, Dusty Adkins 9 years old, Brandon Sutterfield 9 years old, Samuel Baistow 10 years old, Jacob Inabrett 9 years old, William Inabrett 10 years old, Anthony Troy 10 years old, Olivia Floyd 9 years old, Mia Schell 9 years old, and Jenna Kleinman 9 years old.

For the drivers’ side it was Shaun Daugharty, David Clegg, Jason Davis, Rob Underwood, and Larry Burkins. Two sessions were thrown with the kids beating out the Volusia drivers each time.

Taylor Racing Products Sportsman took to the track for their 20 lap feature with Matt McGillivrary on the pole and Paul Shead on the outside pole. Paul Shead took the early lead but it was a short green as the caution came out on lap 2 for Marc Kinley who had spun in turns 1 and 2. Restart saw Shead on the outside and McGillivray on the inside with Shead taking the point once again over Aaron Barsness, Matt McGillivrary, Cory Holley and Shaun Daugharty.

Multiple cautions occurred throughout this event and in the final laps, the caution comes out again on lap 17 for Holley who has spun in turn 4. With three laps left to go Barsness has the point on the restart followed by Daugharty, Paul Shead, McGillivrary, and Drew Smith. Daugharty puts the heat on Barsness and tries to take over but Barsness quickly shuts the door. Justin Merry spins in turn 4 as the field goes to the checkered with Aaron Barsness taking his third straight win over Shaun Daugharty, Paul Shead, Matt McGillivrary, and Drew Smith.

The Budweiser (Quality Brands) Modifieds saw Wayne Hammond on the pole and Dale Murray on the outside pole. Two attempts at starting this raced resulted in multiple car disturbances in turns 1 and 2.

The third time is the charm with Jamie Carter on the inside and Rob Underwood on the outside to finally start the 20 lap contest. Carter takes the point over Matthews, Underwood, Hammond and Corbin.

Cautions continue to plague the Budweiser Modifieds, and finally Carter builds up a significant lead over Hammond with almost every modified on the track having some kind of damage from the night.Jamie Carter takes the win for his first feature win of 2010 over Wayne Hammond, Jeff Matthews, Rob Underwood and James Smith.

Kevin Durden had the pole for the Daytona Dodge Chyrsler Jeep Late Model feature with David Clegg on the outside pole. The race goes green as Clegg takes the point over Durden, Wood, Davis and Chappell. Dillon Wood finds his way to the front and exchanged places with Clegg several times during this event. In the end experience wins out with the “Sod Father” taking the checkered for his first feature win in 2010 followed by Dillon Wood, Donnie Chappell, Darell Padgett, and Jason Davis.

Last but never least, it is the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks with Tim Hughes on the pole and Jody Wells on the outside pole. The green is out as Hughes takes the point. Gamble puts the heat on Hughes and takes over the point followed by Hughes, Jody Wells, Steve Oldaker, and Mark Maresca.

Gamble builds up a strong advantage over the field as he looks for his second straight win of the season. Gamble is followed by Hughes coasting comfortably in second, while the real action takes place for third, fourth and fifth. Oldaker, Wells, Maresca and Mike Eubanks exchange places several times before Gamble takes the checkered for his second straight win of the 2010 season over Tim Hughes, Steve Oldaker, Jody Wells, and Mark Maresca.

Joey Aguilar tops TBARA at Five Flags Speedway

by Marty LittlePENSCAOLA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Area Racing Ass’n. made their first of two planned visits this season to the fast half mile of Five Flags Speedway Friday night and it was Joey Aguilar the victor in the 30 lap sprint car feature after a wire to wire run from the pole position.

Aguilar paced the 21 car field at the drop of the green flag over fellow front row starter Ben Fritz and Bo Hartley. The man on the move was Shane Butler as he worked through traffic from his eighth starting slot. Always fast Troy DeCaire in the Rudolph 68 brought out a yellow flag on lap 13 when the left front wheel departed and he pounded the concrete. DeCaire was unhurt but the same can’t be said for his car.

When the green flew once again it was Aguilar over Butler and Hartley as they clicked off laps in the 14 second bracket like clockwork. It was a yo-yo deal among the front trio as Butler could run down Aguilar before Joey would stretch it out on Shane with Hartley only a few car lengths back. The pace slowed somewhat in the close laps as Hartley ran down both Aguilar and Butler but all three were mindful of the rough track surface and the condition of their tires due to the rough track surface.

When the checkers flew it was Aguilar for his first victory in Doc Miller’s 78 ahead of Butler, Hartley, Dude Teate and D.J. Hoelzle. The second five consisted of Larry Brazil, Fritz, Michael Miller, Tommy Nichols and fast qualifier Brian Gingras.

Heat race victories fell to Aguilar, Hartley and Fritz.

The next event is set for March 27 at DeSoto Super Speedway in Bradneton, Fla.

Feature finish (30 laps) – 1. Joey Aguilar, 2. Shane Butler, 3. Bo Hartley, 4. Dude Teate, 5. D.J. Hoelzle, 6. Larry Brazil, 7. Ben Fritz, 8. Michael Miller, 9. Tommy Nichols, 10. Brian Gingras, 11. Jeff Scofield tops F.A.S.T. Series at Auburndale Speedway

Auburndale Speedway; Winter Haven, Florida: Race scheduled for Saturday, March 20, 2010.

Port City Race Cars/AMF Chassis 100 Qualifying
It was another great day for racing, weather-wise, as 24 Late Models took to the track for qualifying at 5:30. Jason Vail in the No. 407 held fast time throughout most of the round with a 13.46 second lap, only to see Jeff Scofield in the No. 07 lay down a lap of 13.37 seconds. Qualifying was red-flagged at about midway as a result of a serious crash involving David King in the No. 22. King’s throttle appeared to hang as he entered his second qualifying lap, sending him hard into the first turn wall. He walked away uninjured.

The top six qualifiers subsequently drew for starting spots, with Scofield drawing the pole, third fastest qualifier Wayne Anderson (No. 84) drawing the outside pole, and Ron Lofquist (No. 49), Jason Vail (No. 407), Kevin Ingram (No. 21), and Tyler Laing (No. 39) rounding out the top 6.

Port City Race Cars/AMF Chassis 100 Results
A multi-car wreck at the start of the Sunoco FAST Late Model feature, followed by a red flag while the damaged cars of Steve Avinger, Alan Bruns, Tyler Laing, and Andrew Carbonell were removed, set the tone for what would be a night of hard racing. When racing finally got underway roughly 20 minutes later, a lap two incident with Kevin Ingram (21) sent Wayne Anderson (84) spinning to the infield.

On lap 32, a caution sent Daryl Shelnut (77) to the rear, while Wayne Anderson moved back into the top five on lap 45. Meanwhile, a three-car battle between Scofield, Lofquist, and Vail continued at the front of the field, while Ingram and Wayne Anderson moved in to the top five.

On lap 65, Ingram and Wayne Anderson, running third and fourth, tangled again, sending Ingram into the first turn wall. Anderson was disqualified, finishing 24th.

On the restart, Austin Kirkpatrick (85) took over third place, while Scofield and Lofquist continued their battle, with Scofield steadily pulling away. On lap 81, Randy Anderson and Joe Winchell (57) tangled in turn 2, sending the Rookie Anderson’s car to the pits while Winchell rejoined the field.

The restart saw Scofield jump out to a three-car length lead, only to have the race go back under caution as Jeremy Gerstner (70) and Jason Vail collided in turn 2, sending Vail spinning to the infield. When the race resumed on lap 86, Scofield resumed command, building a straightaway lead by lap 90.

A caution on lap 98 caused by a spinning Ryan Lisak generated a final restart, but Scofield was not to be caught, leading all 100 laps of the Sunoco FAST feature. The race was slowed by seven cautions and two red flags.
