Todd-ShuteOSKALOOSA, Iowa (July 16) – And then there were seven.

Todd Shute became the seventh different winner in as many Karl Performance Hawkeye Dirt Tour presented by XSAN events this season, with a commanding run Tuesdaynight at Southern Iowa Speedway.

Runner-up Scott Hogan led the first eight of 25 circuits after starting outside pole and avoiding the mishaps that brought out two early cautions. Shute had his hands full with Mike Van Genderen and Nebraskan Dylan Smith before gaining second and going to the high side to challenge Hogan.

Shute had the lead when the ninth lap was scored. He’d race to a comfortable advantage over Hogan while Van Genderen was firmly in third and Smith in fourth. “B” qualifier and hard charger Steve Stewart had a lengthy duel with Mark Elliott before securing fifth. (more…)

071613_Lernerville_VL_Arch_WSARVER, Pa. – July 16, 2013 – Donny Schatz passed Jac Haudenschild with 10 go on Tuesday night at Lernerville Speedway to capture the first of two A-mains in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Twins, with Daryn Pittman earning the victory in the second A-main after moving in front with 1 to go and surviving a green-white-checkered finish over hard-charging Kyle Larson, who started in the 26th and final position.

Schatz was the overall Silver Cup champion based on his victory and a seventh-place finish in the second A-main as compared to Pittman’s win and 14th-place run in the first A-main. Chad Kemenah started second in the opening feature and led early. Following a restart on lap 10, Kemenah couldn’t hold off Haudenschild, who led until a lap-20 caution caused by a scary-looking Stevie Smith flip. Harrison Bumps and Runs to Fourth Win of 2013 Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals at Peoria Speedway

071513_MN_PeoriaPEORIA, Ill. — July 15, 2013 — Mike Harrison extended his DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals points lead over Rusty Griffaw after he turned leader Kenny Wallace in the final corner and drove to the checkers to claim his fourth win of the 2013 tour on Monday night at Peoria Speedway.

The top two in final points of the 2012 series championship, Harrison, of Highland, Ill., and Wallace, of St. Louis, Mo., shared the front row. Wallace got the jump on Harrison in the high groove and pulled out to an early lead before an early race caution bunched the field.

Wallace again started quickly and tried to hold off Harrison, who could get to Wallace’s bumper but could never get a nose under him. Harrison finally got position on Wallace as Milo Veloz Jr. joined the battle for the lead. Harrison and Wallace raced side-by-side for the next handful of laps with Veloz lurking behind them, but Wallace maintained the top spot in the faster outside line. (more…)

Shirley Captures First DIRTcar Summer Nationals “Hell Tour” Victory in 2013 with Thrilling Last Lap Pass at Peoria Speedway

071513_SN_PeoriaPEORIA, Ill. — July 15, 2013 — Defending Summer Nationals champion Brian Shirley claimed his first victory of the six week-long tour Monday night after completing a daring last-lap pass on leader Mike Spatola exiting turn two en route to capturing the checkered flag at Peoria Speedway.

Shirley, of Chatham, Ill., started on the pole of the 40-lapper alongside Spatola and charged out to an early lead, but the quarter-mile track proved to be tricky, as Shirley hopped the cushion on lap 16 letting Spatola around him for the lead.

Shirley and Spatola continued to swap the lead back-and-forth for most of the race before Spatola finally pulled away on lap 30. Once again, though, the track bit the leader, this time getting Spatola and allowing Shirley and points-leader Brandon Sheppard to join the battle for the win. (more…)

Caleb Holman Breaks Through to X-1R Pro Cup Victory Lane at Southern Nationa

calebholman_win_snmpMooresville, NC 7/15/13– So far this season Edelbrock Victory Lane has only been graced by two X-1R Pro Cup Series veterans in Clay Rogers and Mark McFarland. Rogers won the series’ first three events followed by McFarland taking care of business in the last two outings. Saturday night, Caleb Holman another longtime series supporter, piloted his #75 Food Country USA Chevrolet to a dominating victory; leading 141 laps of the NolesCabinets.com 200 at the Southern National Motorsport Park. The win came in just his second start of the 2013 season after blowing an engine on lap nine in his last outing at Motor Mile Speedway on June 8th.

“We had a pretty decent piece when we unloaded and then Butch (Miller) and the entire crew went to work on it throughout the day in practice to make the handling last over the long run and it looks like what we did worked,” explained an excited Holman in Edelbrock Victory Lane. “I settled in for second just to see how things were going to play out, and then I decided I need to see what we had over the final laps leading up to the halfway point, so I would know what to expect after the halfway break. Luck must have been on our side because we redrew the pole at the break and never looked back.” (more…)

Thomas Scores Second Win of 2013 Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals at Vermilion County Speedway

071413_MN_VermilionDANVILLE, Ill. — July 14, 2013 — Ryan Thomas scored his second victory of the 2013 Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals in dominating fashion on Sunday night, leading every lap but the first one at Vermilion County Speedway.

Thomas, of Martinsville, Ind., becomes only the third repeat winner of the six-week 2013 season. Thomas started on the outside of Steven Brooks, of New Lenox, Ill., on the front row as the field thundered to the green flag. Brooks got the early jump on Thomas before surrendering the lead on lap 2 to Thomas, who made his move to the front in the low groove.

Thomas quickly extended his lead over Brooks, who had his hands full with Brian Lynn and Nick Allen. Brooks allowed Lynn by him for a few laps before finally recapturing the second position, but no one could catch Thomas, who had extended his lead over the field. Eventually Brooks had a chance to pass Thomas with two to go but could not pull even with him as Thomas held him off to capture the $1,000 checkered flag. (more…)

Babb Ties All-Time Win Record with Sixth DIRTcar Summer Nationals “Hell Tour” Victory at Vermilion County Speedway

071413_SN_VermilionDANVILLE, Ill. — July 14, 2013 — Shannon Babb scored his sixth victory of the 2013 DIRTcar Summer Nationals “Hell Tour” on Sunday night in a thriller at Vermilion County Speedway to tie Billy Moyer’s record of 82 all-time wins.

Babb, of Moweaqua, Ill., might be a long shot to capture his fourth Summer Nationals title as the series is in its final week, but that won’t keep him from fighting for victories. Babb captured the pole-position over Frank Heckenast Jr., who pulled out to the early lead. The outside groove was the fast groove early on as the outside starting Heckenast shot around Babb, pulling fourth-place-starting Mike Spatola with him.

Babb was finally able to move his car to the faster groove and gain back ground on the leaders as red-hot Bobby Pierce joined the four-way battle for the lead. Babb muscled his way around second-place running Spatola on lap 11, setting his sights on leader Heckenast as the leaders approached lapped traffic. On lap 19 two cars racing side-by-side trying to stay on the lead lap slowed down the leaders enough to bunch the top four in the outside lane. Babb captured the lead on lap 22 and led for six laps before Spatola and Pierce went by. Babb recaptured the lead for good on lap 31. (more…)

Harris Ends Kay’s Deery Streak at Dubuque

Harris1-640x320DUBUQUE, Iowa (July 14) – Brian Harris returned to victory lane Sunday night at Dubuque Speedway, at the expense of the driver who had snapped his four-race Deery Brothers Summer Series winning streak.

Harris led most of the IMCA Late Model tour 50 lapper from the pole but the 12th starting Justin Kay didn’t give up his own three-race streak easily.

They traded the front spot four times over the final seven circuits, with Harris gaining the edge for the final two go-arounds after Kay missed his mark in the first set of turns.

Finally able to get some breathing room after a side-by-side battle that lasted most of 20 laps, Harris beat Kay to the checkers by three car lengths for his fifth $3,000 checkers of the season.

Luke Merfeld, Ray Guss Jr. and Dan Shelliam completed the top five. Hard charger Jeff Aikey advanced a dozen spots to seventh.  (more…)
