Marlar Captures World of Outlaws Late Model Series Victory at Tazewell Speedway

Tennessee Driver Tops Clanton, Eckert for His First Series Win in 50-Lap Feature

041214_Tazewell_VL2By Chris Tilley, TAZEWELL, Tenn. – Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., took advantage of Tim McCreadie’s misfortune and went on to capture Saturday night’s Scion of Knoxville 50 World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main at Tazewell Speedway.

This was Marlar’s first-career World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory, and he became the series’ seventh different winner this season in seven races after holding off Shane Clanton and Rick Eckert to the checkered flag as championship leader Darrell Lanigan finished fourth with last year’s top rookie Eric Wells rounding out the top five.

“We actually scaled back on racing this year and I think we’re going to have one of our best year’s yet,” said an excited Marlar in victory lane.

“My steering is bent, my arms are tired, but with all the help from my family and friends, Ronnie Delk (car owner), all of the work they put in, we’re going stay in there and drive it all we can,” stated Marlar after talking about his near mishap with lapped car Mark Gant. (more…)

KNOWLES KNOWS CHEVY SUPER SERIES EAMS VICTORY LANE

PHENIX CITY, AL – Jake Knowles of Tyrone, GA had an exciting start, then an easy race for 40 laps, followed by an anxious last ten laps.  But he hung on to win the 50-lap Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series Race on Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway in the Cedartown Electric Rocket, and in doing so, took over the point lead.

Knowles survived a spin at the start of the race, but after the restart, he took command of the race on lap two, pulling out to over a full straightaway lead.  By lap 32, Knowles caught some lapped traffic and on lap 40 his big lead had evaporated, as National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN closed in to challenge Knowles for the point.

Knowles kept the bottom groove covered, leaving Johnson the outside.  With no place else to go, Johnson stepped to the outside, and even pulled alongside Knowles on a couple of occasions, but he slipped high in turn four on lap 49, and Knowles hung on for a .997 second margin of victory.

“My Dad was signaling me that my big lead was going away, and it was pretty frustrating being stuck behind a lapped car that ran me all over the race track,” Knowles said.  “I looked up at the scoreboard with ten laps to go, and saw the number 5 up there in second, and I knew I could be in trouble.” (more…)

Desoto Speedway
As the laps wound down on Saturday night’s 75-lap Turner Tree and Landscape Super Late Model feature at Desoto Speedway, Jeff Scofield knew he had a car capable of winning but had to be a little patient.
Scofield would eventually prove the saying that “good things happen to those who wait” can actually be true. Riding in third place for most of the race, Scofield capitalized on a late restart and powered to his first win of the season at Desoto. (more…)

Drag Racing Returns To GMP This Saturday – 2014 Street Drag/Show N’ Shine Events Debut

SGMP LogoJEFFERSON, GA – After nearly a 50-year absence, Drag Racing will return to Gresham Motorsports Park with the debut of the GMP Street Drags / Shown N’ Shine program this Saturday.

“Most people don’t know that the first racetrack at GMP wasn’t an oval, it was a drag strip,” said track general manager John Close. “Local residents Hansel Wilson and Quentin Freeman built the track and they held all kinds of drag races here from 1963 through 1967. The strip featured a quarter-mile asphalt track and a dirt run-off area. It was located where the GMP back-straight trackside parking is now. There were no grandstands – spectators just stood by the track. There were also two little wooden concessions – one that cooked, one that didn’t. That’s great history that most people don’t know about. Now, after all this time, it’s pretty cool to be bringing drag racing back to Gresham Motorsports Park.”

In all, Gresham Motorsports Park will hold eight Street Drag/Show N’ Shine events in 2014. Each event will feature a Car Show from 2-5:30 p.m. before the Street Drag portion of the program opens its gates at 6 p.m. with the first race at 7 p.m. (more…)

Forrest Gough And John Moore Make It Two Wins In A Row At East Bay Raceway Park

Gough-Winner-4-5-14Tampa, FL  – Limited Late Models, Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, V8 Warriors and the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers were all on hand to find out who will be in Victory Lane at The Clay By The Bay tonight.

First feature of the night went to the V8 Warriors. Winning their heats early on were Derek Gray and Mike Wilson. It would be Bill Bill Smith and Brett Phillips making up the front row for the 15 Lap Feature Event. When the green waved it was Bill Bill Smith taking charge for the first few laps until Jimmy Baker and Smith crossed the line on lap three with Smith over Baker by just a half a car length. But it was on the very next lap as Smith was trying to hold off Baker and found himself spinning out in turn four putting him to the tail end of the field. On the restart it was Baker leading with Brett Phillips and Mike Wilson the top three. Baker did everything he could to hold off the field but it was on lap fourteen as Mike Wilson would take over the lead coming out of turn four and going on to win the feature. Rounding out the top five were Raymond Van, Jimmy Baker, Bill Whitney and Derek Gray.
Next up were the Limited Late Models. A good field of cars was on hand as 19 cars registered for the nights action. Winning their heats early on were Forrest Gough, Roger Crouse and Richard Livernois, Jr. On the front row for the feature it would be Jason Pope and Henry Burnside. Burnside quickly took the lead and would remain there until the first caution would come out for Jeremy Simpson stopping on the backstretch ending his night with seventeenth place for the feature.
