REYNOLDS AND SYMONS POST %0-LAP VICTORIES AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY

Justin Reynolds topped the 50-lap Super Stock race (Kim Jones Photo)It was Fan Appreciation Night at New Smyrna Speedway Saturday and a nice crowd was treated to some great racing plus a large number of kids and their parents took part in a fun “Tire Race” at intermission that produced two of the worst “crashes” of the night.  All the kids were OK (especially after an ice cream treat) and got a chance to head home with a real race car tire in their possession.

Both the Super Stock and Open-Competition Modifieds ran 50-lap events while the Mini Stocks hit the track for a 25-lap feature.  The Super Stock drivers came out in force with 23 cars signing in although Warren Schurr’s Ford Torino broke in warm-ups and he was unable to start the big race.  Garrett Hill of Orlando established himself as the early favorite by blistering the track in qualifying with a lap of 20.753 seconds easily outdistancing the second-fast qualifier, Merritt Island’s Justin Reynolds who turned a lap at 21.170 seconds.  Hill pulled a five pill placing him fifth on the starting grid while it would be David Gould and Danny Frye on the front row for the start. Gould led the opening lap only to see the caution flag quickly out for Michael Bedient who spun in turn four.  Frye snared the lead on the restart and was out front when Michael Held bit off a chunk of the turn four wall to bring out the yellow on lap seven.  On the restart a multi-car melee took place in turn one involving the cars of Brandon Christian, Charles King, Butch Herdegen, Bedient and Joe Gerard.  Both Christian and Bedient were done for the night while all others continued with just “cosmetic” damage.  Frye set the pace for a few laps after the restart but Reynolds was on the charge in his “Mellow Yellow” Chevrolet and he took the lead, proceeding to draw away from the field, lapping cars well into the top ten before a caution flag appeared with five laps to go as Joe Bandur spun on the front stretch.  Hill was now up to second and everyone though Reynolds would now get a real challenge but is was not to be as he pulled away easily from Hill to claim a big victory made even sweeter because his grandfather was in attendance from Niagra Falls, NY to watch him race. Billy Ogle Jr Dominates Ricking With the Stars Smoky Mt Southern All Star Event

SAS LogoMARYVILLE, TN—The Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series returned to the Smoky Mt Speedway in Maryville, TN., Saturday night and local favorite Billy Ogle Jr of Knoxville, TN., put on dominating performance for the night as he sat fast time in White Performance qualifying and then lead 39 of the 40 lap event en route to the $5,000 to win paycheck.

Ogle along with outside pole sitter Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC., brought the field to the green for the initial start of the race, but as the field headed down the backstretch, midway through the field in turn three the cars of Tommy Kerr and Josh Putnam got together with Putnam cutting across the infield through the go kart track and Kerr flipping his car over.  Putnam was able to continue but Kerr was done for the night.

The next start saw Cook get a slight jump ahead of Ogle on the start and Cook lead lap one but Ogle moved under him in turns one and two and then proceeded to stay up front and work lapped traffic with ease to get his 12th career series win.  Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN., came home in second spot, who made a late race charge from his ninth starting spot to get by Cook, who fell back to third and blew a tire as he came across the finish line, fourth place went to point leader Riley Hickman of Ooltewah, TN., and fifth place was Dylan Ames of Harvest, AL., in his best career finish with the series. Enfinger conquers Salem; takes first three wins of ARCA season

arca-logo-2010(SALEM, Ind.) – Grant Enfinger made ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards history Sunday afternoon, winning his third race to start the 2014 season, becoming just the second driver in series history to do so.

“The stars are just lining up for us,” Enfinger said. “It’s pretty unbelievable.”

After leading the first 100 laps of the Federated Auto Parts 200 presented by Crunch’N Nutter at Salem, Enfinger moved back to the front late in the race and took the lead when Ken Schrader hit the wall in turn one on the last re-start. Schrader was leading when the re-start began with Enfinger in second.

“I wanted the chance to drag race him to the finish,” Enfinger said. “I think he just blew a right front there. That’s what happened. It was a lot of fun racing up front against him.”

Spencer Gallagher finished second, Frank Kimmel third and Cunningham Motorsports drivers Austin Wayne Self (fourth) and Tom Hessert (fifth) rounded out the top five. (more…)
