THREE FIRST TIME WINNERS HIGHLIGHT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY 2015 OPENER

hhFans were treated to plenty of wild action that produced several torn-up race
cars and some wild finishes Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway as the track
opened its 48th season of racing and its second under the NASCAR Whelen All
American Racing Series.
When Michael Seay showed up at the race track Saturday afternoon all he
expected to do was to hang out with friends and help whichever team needed his
assistance.  However, the Sheppard Racing Enterprises team out of Deland had
four Sportsman cars on hand for owners Jim Daley and Sandy Lee and were one
driver short.  Seay was offered a ride in Lee’s #10 car as Lee had already
decided to drive Daley’s #77 in the race while R. J. Glaser was set to run the
#20 machine while Ron Gustafson would be wheeling the #38. (more…)

Safe stolen at Bubba Raceway Park, recovered with $5,000 missing

bnA large floor safe that contained more than $13,000 in cash was reported stolen Sunday from Bubba Raceway Park. The safe was later recovered, with more than $5,000 missing from it.

The safe was reported missing Sunday evening from the track at 9050 NW Gainesville Road. The theft happened sometime after 1 a.m. on Saturday, after the Friday night performance, according to a Marion County Sheriff’s Office report.

Investigators believe someone climbed into the raceway office through a back window. A screen was removed from the window and set against the building, and items that were on the window sill were scattered on the ground outside. The office was in disarray and two other safes had been tampered with but were not removed.

Officers saw a trail in the dirt leading from the office to the tree line. A dolly was missing and investigators speculated it was used to move the safe, which left the trail in the dirt.

At the same time officers were at the raceway, a caretaker at Fessenden Elementary School, which is next to the track, called the sheriff’s office to report finding a safe and a dolly on the property, the reports notes.

The safe was identified as the one taken from the track office.

The safe had two compartments, each with a combination lock. The upper part of the safe was breached. According to raceway officials, it held more than $5,000 in cash from Friday’s event. The bottom portion of the safe was still locked, but the combination dial was damaged and could not be opened by track officials. There was reportedly $8,000 in cash in that section, according to the report.

Anyone with information can call the Sheriff’s Office at 732-9111 or Crime Stoppers at 368-STOP.

Neri survives carnage for Late Model win at Desoto

aaProvided by Desoto Speedway
On a night that saw a lot of bent sheet metal, flaring tempers – and even flying fists between a pair of longtime rivals – it was Nick Neri who found himself holding the trophy after Saturday night’s Turner Tree and Landscape with Sunoco Southern Racing Fuels 50-lap Super Late Model feature at Desoto Speedway
Joe Boyd grabbed the lead from polesitter Michael Atwell at the drop of the green flag. As Boyd and Atwell ran nose-to-tail around the three-eighths mile oval for the first 25 laps the action was tight in the battle for third through sixth between Chris Fontaine, Icebreaker 100 winner Jeff Scofield and Jesse Dutilly.
On lap 25 Dutilly and Scofield made contact in turn four, with Dutilly losing several spots in the exchange. The caution flew two laps later for Dylan Martin’s spin.
