Jim Rouse, Ocala, FL- The Scorpion Racing Products UMP DirtCar Modifieds headlined a 5-division night with the Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, Rent-N-Roll Gladiators, and Florida Mini Sprints that proved to be the best action of the season.
Our very own Hobby Stocks opened the night and Don Woosley jumped to the lead. Woosley had a career night early on but did lose the lead to William Edwards on lap 3. Richard Calmes, Jr., Brian Shea, and Alvin Adkison combined to bring out 5 cautions with solo spins on the night. On lap 6 it was “The Mayo Missile” Devin Walker stealing the lead from Edwards and, after a few solo spins- including a lap 9 spin by Edwards- from the previous 3, Walker held off his father, Heath, for the win. The Walker family- the heat race winners- was followed by Brandon Elwood in the Flintstones Mobile, William Edwards, and Richard Calmes, Jr.
The Florida Mini Sprints went 24 and 3/4 laps caution-free before a wreck in turn 4 on the last lap as some drivers fought for the win. Early on, Kat Thomas led from her pole position as Chase Cabre fell off from outside pole. Thomas relinquished the lead on lap 5 as John Kahl made a move to grab the top spot. Dirk Miller, David Hall, and Eddie Moss, Jr. had work cut out for them as all 3 started from Row 7 or worse but they made their way to the front by the end. Kahl did not work the traffic as he needed to and Cabre made his move and stole the lead on lap 18. Traffic worked both drivers hard and Cabre got pinned to the bottom on the last lap. Kahl went high, Cabre stayed low, and traffic hit Kahl and spun the #13 by accident allowing Cabre to take the checkers. Dirk Miller finished 2nd as scoring went to the previously scored lap (minus Kahl). Nick Snyder finished 3rd, David Hall finished 4th, and Austin Craddock completed the top 5. Miller, Hall, Jody McKenzie, and Gavin Thomas scored Heat Race wins.
Rich Pratt got the early jump on the Scorpion Racing Products but Jeff Mathews got around him on lap 3. Mathews gave it back on lap 7 and Pratt pulled away before Jeff Bagent slowed and let Mathews take another shot at the #78. Buzzie Reutimann spun on a restart but was able to rebound over the next 15 laps. Mathews cleared Pratt again on lap 13 and, after heat race winner Bryan Bernhardt cut a tire on his Mathews Motorsports #33L, cruised to a win in his old stomping ground and put on another heat-feature sweep. Pratt finished bridesmaid again with Ronnie Soltis 3rd in the GRT, Bernhardt 4th, and Reutimann 5th.
The 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, not to be outdone, had an outstanding fight with “TC” Tony Campbell the lap 1 leader. William Gillam, who had the number game on his side (#13 on 4-13-13) took over on lap 2. He held the lead through a couple of solo spins and a lap 3 crash between William Edwards, Kyle Goulard, Harold Erickson, and John Florkowski. After a lap 7 restart, Gillam relinquished his lead to Melvin Fockler who would lead until lap 12 when heat race winner Jeff Stalnaker, Jr. got around him. Stalnaker held on through a couple of restarts to take home a big win over Brandon Elwood. Jonathan Appleby, a heat winner, finished 3rd after a melee happened at the mid-pack. Heat Race winner James Erickson finished a very quiet 4th and Brandon Tillander took home his 1st career top 5.
The Rent-N-Roll Gladiators finished the night with a caution-free event that Stephen Frankland went wire-to-wire in. In fact, Frankland won his heat and feature! Jerry Taylor made it difficult for the British driver but couldn’t do anything with him. Taylor finished in 2nd over Bill Southard in a career-best 3rd. Southard had a great battle with Kody Fisher and Tom Sheehan throughout the event beofre pulling away in the closing laps. Fisher held Sheehan off for 4th.
Next week is the Monster Jam Summer Jam Tour. We return to racing action in 2 weeks and we hope to see you for Night of a Thousands!
