Storer takes Sportsman crown at Desoto Speedway

By SCOTT LOCKWOOD, Desoto Speedway – Brooke Storer and Roger Welch knew heading into Saturday night’s 50-lap Sportsman feature that whoever finished in front of the other would claim the track’s 2016 championship and get a jump on their competiiton for the new season. While no one had an answer for Aaron Williamson, Welch held the early advantage – but it was Storer who walked away with the big trophy at the end of Saturday night’s action at Desoto Speedway. Welch grabbed the lead at the green flag with James Wright and Brooke Storer in tow. A fire erupted from the back of Rick Reed’s car after just two laps, which brought out a brief red flag. Storer got by Wright for second and wasted no time getting to Welch’s rear bumper. Storer took the lead after slight contact with Welch on lap 8 and was joined at the front of the field by Aaron Williamson just before Wright spun to bring out another caution a couple of laps later. Williamson used the high line on the restart to get the lead from Storer and set sail from the rest of the field. He went unchallenged the rest of the way on his way to the victory. Storer claimed the 2016 Sportsman championship with her second place finish. “I can’t thank my team enough. It was an amazing 2016 season,” Storer said. “We had a lot of help and I thank my family for standing by me through our racing endeavors.” Cody Allen, Welch and Tom Zimmerman rounded out the top five. Breaking News: US Senate Joins House In Support Of RPM Act Of 2017

The RPM Act is cosponsored by 14 members of the US Senate. The bill ensures that transforming motor vehicles into race cars used exclusively in competition does not violate the Clean Air Act.

The US Senate has joined the House of Representatives in reintroducing the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2017 (RPM Act). The bipartisan bill (S.203), introduced by Senator Richard Burr (R-NC), protects Americans’ right to modify street cars and motorcycles into dedicated race vehicles and industry’s right to sell the parts that enable racers to compete.

The RPM Act is cosponsored by 14 members of the US Senate. The bill ensures that transforming motor vehicles into race cars used exclusively in competition does not violate the Clean Air Act.

“SEMA extends its thanks to Senator Burr and the other cosponsors, and looks forward to working with Congress and the Trump administration to enact the RPM Act into law this year,” said SEMA President & CEO Chris Kersting. “We call on the entire enthusiast community to again reach out to their federal lawmakers to request support for the bill. The RPM Act is the only solution that will ensure that this time-honored tradition and livelihood for millions of Americans will be preserved for generations to come.”

TYLER SIMPSON “DARN GOOD” IN SSCS MOD MINIS AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

Week number two of Auburndale Speedway’s Winter Sunday racing series saw much warmer weather than on the opening Sunday last week and plenty of great racing action as it was “DARN Day at the Races” with fans getting the opportunity to support DARN that helps raise awareness of farming and agriculture to the youth in Central Florida through various programs along with supporting local school’s FFA and 4-H programs. It was such a warm day that several fans came up with a new month for Florida – “Januly.”

The headlining event of the day was the season opener for the Sunshine State Challenge Series Mod Minis. Defending Auburndale Speedway champion Chris Spring of Auburndale set quick time at 15.16 seconds followed by the 15.22 lap of New Smyrna’s Tyler Simpson.

It would be Jimmy Frazier leading the opening pair of laps before Simpson breezed by bringing a very fast Jeff Firestine along with him. Simpson took off and hid from the field as a great battle ensued between Firestine, Frazier and Spring. A caution for debris on the back stretch slowed the action and allowed the field to close on Simpson. On the restart, both Firestine and Frazier got by the leader while Spring got extremely loose trying to grab the second spot and fell again back to fourth in the running. (more…)

Friesen’s Big-Block Modified Roots Helped Create NASCAR Ride

friesen-nascar-storyBy Clayton Johns (CONCORD, N.C.) — Jan. 11, 2017 —One of the biggest stars of the Super DIRTcar Series will race full-time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series come 2017. Sprakers, NY driver Stewart Friesen has partnered with Chris Larsen to create Halmar Friesen Racing for his first full-time foray into NASCAR Racing, he announced Monday. Tommy Baldwin Jr. will be the team’s crew chief.

“We got our feet wet in it last year and the opportunity came to team up with Tommy Baldwin and his operation so it was a no-brainer for us. We combined forces and I’m really looking forward to it,” Friesen said.

Friesen made his NASCAR Truck Series debut last July at Eldora Speedway, NASCAR’s only race on dirt. The ride was supposed to be a one-time deal, but quickly blossomed into five more races for Friesen before the end of 2016. It led to the formation of his new team, which will be based in Mooresville, NC.

“We had just planned to do Eldora and have some fun with it, but it kind of lit a fire under everyone and the decision was made to try and do more,” Friesen explained. “We really learned a lot and met some great people along the way. Now we’ve kind of upped our game to the next level.” (more…)
