Triple Double

Jim Rouse, BRP Media (9-7-12) – Ocala, FL – The Demolition Derby and Powder Puff Derby were a great addition to the Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators. With the 3 regular divisions making up a feature from mid-July in addition to a regular night of racing it was the most exciting racing of 2012.

First up was the Hobby Stock make-up race with Scott Haas the leader from outside pole as a caution came out for Chad Scranton’s flattened right rear tire. Sean Monaghan had a tough opening to the race as he hit everything but the pace car before he stopped and brought the 2nd caution out. Rodney Wright would steal the lead out of turn 4 on the restart while Tim Powers attempted to swallow Haas up. Chad Scranton methodically worked through the field and was up to P4 after Haas retired just past halfway. Wright and Powers fought like brothers over the last dozen laps. Rodney Wright won the fight with Powers 2nd. Trevor Gamble was nearly a lap down in 3rd with Chad Scranton and Hunter Gustafson a lap down in 4th and 5th, respectively. (more…)

He would roll into victory lane with a completely flat right rear tire.

Becker Golden on Night 2 of the Gold Cup Race of Champions

The Californian nabs his first career World of Outlaws victory at Silver Dollar Speedway

CHICO, Calif. – Sept. 7, 2012 – As he climbed out of his sprint car and listened to the roar of the crowd, Sean Becker raised his hands in the air and let out a half yell.

With confetti raining down on Victory Lane, Becker was emotional and seemingly stunned after he recorded his first career World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series feature victory Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway.

The win came on the second night of the 59th annual Gold Cup Race of Champions and it helped lock him into Saturday’s $20,000-to-win feature.

“I grew up watching my dad race at this track in the late ’80s, early ’90s,” Becker said. “(I) grew up watching Sammy Swindell, Steve Kinser, all these guys. It’s a huge accomplishment for me. There’s no greater moment right now.”

While Becker nabbed the win it came at the expense of fellow Californian Kyle Larson, who led the first 19 laps before his right rear tire went flat during a red flag with 11 laps remaining. Larson repeatedly spun his rear tires during the caution laps in an effort to create more air, but he was doomed from the restart. (more…)

Schatz Survives Opening Night at Gold Cup Race of Champions

Dollansky and Swindell Endure Issues to Slow World of Outlaws Championship Hopes

CHICO, Calif. – Sept. 6, 2012 – Well, that just shook up the points.

A pair of drivers in contention for the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship took a major hit on Thursday while a four-time champion survived a treacherous track on the opening night of the 59th annual Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway.

Donny Schatz slid by polesitter Kyle Larson exiting turn two on lap 20 en route to his eighth World of Outlaws victory of the season. The win, combined with some misfortune to a couple of fellow championship contenders, moved Schatz into the points lead for the first time in the last 21 races.

“It was fun,” he said. “(Larson) was really good on the top and we had a decent car on the bottom. It just was really tricky to run. It took me five or six laps to figure out how to drive it. It was a fun race and I’m glad to come out on the good side of it.”

Two drivers in search of that same title found bitter results. (more…)

Roulo Narrowly Leads Cometic Crew Chief of the Year Standings with Three Races Remaining in ARCA Racing Series Season

(TOLEDO, Ohio) – Just like his driver Chris Buescher heads up the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards point standings, crew chief Gary Roulo of Roulo Brothers Racing leads the Cometic Crew Chief of the Year standings with only three races left this season.

Through 17 races, the man who oversees the No. 17 Ford has earned 5665 points in the crew chief standings, 100 more than current runner-up Paul Andrews, crew chief for Alex Bowman and the No. 22 Cunningham Motorsports Dodge.

The Cometic Crew Chief of the Year will receive $3000 at year’s end; the award tabulates points from qualifying and race action. The crew chief of the fastest-qualifying car earns 200 points, with descending positions earning five fewer points per position. The same scoring system is in place for race finishes. Competing crew chiefs must register at the beginning of the season and carry the decal of Cometic Gasket, Inc. on the car to be eligible to score. A maximum of 400 points is possible in each event weekend. (more…)

Shirley Hopes To Continue Memorable Season With A $45,000 World 100 Victory This Weekend At Eldora Speedway

Illinois Star Bidding For Unprecedented Single-Season Sweep Of DIRTcar UMP’s Biggest Race & Points Titles

ROSSBURG, OH – Sept. 6, 2012 – Brian Shirley is hoping to go where no man has gone before this weekend (Sept. 7-8) at Eldora Speedway.

If Shirley can find a way to capture the 42nd annual World 100 on Saturday night, he would be in position to pull off an unprecedented DIRTcar UMP hat trick – winning the circuit’s biggest race, most high-profile touring series (DIRTcar Summer Nationals) and most important points title (national championship) in a single season.

Shirley, 31, of Chatham, Ill., already has this year’s DIRTcar Summer Nationals ‘Hell Tour’ crown in his back pocket and he holds a solid lead in the organization’s national points standings with five weeks of points competition remaining. So it’s the World 100 – the $45,000-to-win Grand Daddy of Dirt Late Model racing – that stands as the primary hurdle between him and dirt-track immortality. (more…)
