Shelnut Knows How to Get it Done with Four in a Row

With a full night of racing on tap at the Punta Gorda Speedway and fun things for the kids, the fans and kids were not disappointed. Right before the features started was the parade lap, speedway owner Kevin Williams had a special guest he drove around the track, Mr and Mrs Claus.

While Jr Fan Club leader Jessica had the kids club all making their own Christmas Ornaments to take home and hang on their trees.

The night started off with the Cowboy Cadillacs that always put on a good show and tonight was no different. While Jeff Deeble of Port Charlotte jumped to the early lead and never looked back to take the win. With no cautions it was hard for Mike Bialecki to catch Deeble as he gave it his all and finished second. Coming home in the third spot was Mike True.

The Legend cars came out for their feature and while Mike Endee of North Port led the first four laps,

it was Mike Verhaagh that got by him and never looked back. Mike Verhaagh was the winner with Tony Steinbuck second and Carl Haag third. (more…)

Fast Track, Hoosier on Board to Support ARCA Touring Series Champions in “Road to Daytona”

(DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.) – When open testing begins this morning for ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards teams at Daytona International Speedway, drivers in ARCA’s “Road to Daytona” program will have Fast Track High Performance Driving School and Hoosier Racing Tire, among others, to thank.

The North Carolina-based Fast Track High Performance Driving School, ARCA’s Official Driving School, will provide the cars and support for three 2012 touring series champions: the ARCA CRA Super Series’ Johnny VanDoorn, the ARCA Midwest Tour’s Jonathan Eilen, and the ARCA Gold Cup Series’ Dakota Carlson.

School owner Andy Hillenburg, a two-time ARCA Daytona winner and the 1995 Series champion, will assist each Road to Daytona driver in the test session. The 2012 Daytona test is the second at which Hillenburg’s school has assisted the touring series competitors. Last year, the Super Series’ Derrick Griffin and the Gold Cup Series’ Dennis Strickland drove Fast Track cars in the Daytona test.

Hoosier Racing Tire will provide a set of tires for each driver at the test. The Indiana-based company has been active in the ARCA Racing Series since the 1950s and has acted as the series’ official tire supplier since 1995.

Yesterday, officials from Roush Yates Engines and ARCA announced that Roush Yates will supply an ARCA spec restrictor plate engine lease for the weekend’s test. (more…)

TURNER NAMED SOUTHERN RACE WEEK DIRT LATE MODEL DRIVER OF THE YEAR

CARTERSVILLE, GA – The 2012 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA has been named the Southern Race Week Radio Dirt Late Model Driver of the Year.  The Southern Race Week Radio Show is syndicated to 28 radio stations throughout Georgia and Alabama.

To hear Matthew Turner’s interview on Southern Race Week, go to Facebook on the internet and like the Southern Race Week page, then click the About page for a list of radio stations and air times.

This award is the latest of accolades Turner has received since winning his first NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Championship at the series’ season finale on December 1 at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, FL.  Turner edged out two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion David Earl Gentry of Murfreesboro, TN by ten points.

The week after winning the title, Turner and his #10 Hedman Husler championship-winning race car made the trip to the International Motorsports Industry Show (IMIS) in Indianapolis, IN, where the race car was displayed in the IMIS Hall of Champions.  Turner was also honored, with many other National Racing Champions at a special reception on December 5 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

“Our team has worked hard to win this championship, but we haven’t had much time to let it all sink in, as it has been so humbling and overwhelming to be honored like we have with the Southern Race Week Driver of the Year Award, and be in the Hall of Champions at the IMIS Show,” Turner said.  “When you think about all of the great drivers in Georgia and Alabama they could have picked for the Driver of the Year Award, and then to be recognized with guys like Cup Champion Brad Kesoloski, and World of Outlaws Champion Donnie Schatz at the IMIS Show, plus rubbing elbows with Tony Stewart, just shows how far we’ve come as a team, and how far the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series has come as a series over the past eight years.” (more…)

ARCA Changing Minimum Age Requirement at Pocono, Kentucky; New Starting Field Maximums Announced

(TOLEDO, Ohio) – Officials from the Automobile Racing Club of America have announced several important procedural changes for the 2013 ARCA Racing Series season.

Beginning in 2013, drivers aged 17 years old may be considered for eligibility to drive in race events at Pocono Raceway and Kentucky Speedway. Drivers seeking approval will be subject to meeting specific and strict guidelines, including but not limited to a thorough driving experience review, successful participation in a minimum of five approved ARCA Racing Series events, and an ARCA-sanctioned open test at the intended track.

The change will give 17-year-old drivers three more races to enter in 2013, bringing the potential season total for a 17-year-old to 16 races.

“In recognizing the growing youth movement in stock car racing, we are proud to have reached agreements with two partner tracks that will allow qualified, up-and-coming drivers to begin their speedway careers at a younger age,” said ARCA president and CEO Ron Drager. “We appreciate the commitment from those tracks to assist in our drivers’ development.”

ARCA also announced that in 2013, the starting field for the February 16 race at Daytona International Speedway will be 40 positions. The first 30 positions will be set by time trials, and the remaining 10 will be set by the provisional procedure listed on the entry blank. (more…)

DIRTcar UMP Hoosier Tire Rule In Place For World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Winter Freeze’ Feb. 8-9 At Screven Motor Speedway

SYLVANIA, GA – Dec. 11, 2012 – The DIRTcar UMP Hoosier tire rule will be in effect for the 2013 World of Outlaws Late Model Series season-opening ‘Winter Freeze’ on Feb. 8-9 at Screven Motor Speedway, series and track officials announced on Monday.

The decision puts Screven’s doubleheader in line on the tire-rule front with ensuing WoO LMS events at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla. (Bubba Army Late Model Winter Nationals on Feb. 15-17) and Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla. (UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment on Feb. 21-23). Hoosier LM 10-20-30-40 compound tires will be the only rubber permitted in the eight February racing programs.

“I’m pretty much game for anything that works best for the racers and I think using the (DIRTcar UMP) Hoosier tires will help everyone,” said Screven owner Redd Griffin, who will host the WoO LMS lidlifter for the second consecutive year. “All the other World of Outlaws races after us (in Florida) are using the same tire rule, so it makes sense for us to simply things and go the same route. Now all the drivers who travel far to come down and race for a couple weeks won’t need to bring even more different tires.” (more…)

Dorer Wins Final FUPS Race and 2012 Championship

The Florida United Promoters Late Model Series concluded the 2012 season with a Sunday afternoon race. After rain washed out the later portion of Saturday’s events, the Regal Kia-Chevy 150 was moved to Sunday for afternoon races, something that hasn’t happen in central FL in some time. The series and track owners Colette and Rex Guy decided to give it a go and they were happy they did. We actually had new fans show up today that couldn’t make it last night, said the Guy’s.

Twenty super late models took qualifying times on Saturday night with Jonathan Guy grabbing his 4th quick time of the season. He was followed by Anthony Campi, point’s leader Steve Dorer, Jeff Scofield, and Kevin Macy to round out the top five.

Sunday morning gave way to sunshine and a great fall day for racing, the teams lined up for the start and autograph session on the front stretch for the fans to meet and greet the drivers. With the re-draw of the top eight, Scott Heckert and Daniel Webster took the front row. Jeff Scofield was fighting the flu and had Wayne Anderson take over the orange & black sleek 07.

On the start Webster got the jump on Heckert but a spin by Tracy Raven brought out the caution for a complete re-start. On the next try Webster got high in turns one & two, Campi make a run on the inside to make it 3 wide with Macy on the bottom, as Webster came back down the three make contact with Macy backwards in the wall in turn 3 bringing out the red flag. Macy & Campi were done for the day. On the re-start Scott Heckert took off with Jesse Dutilly in tow, on lap 22 Dutilly grabs the lead and checks out. (more…)
