Schatz Drives to 18th World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Win

Holds off Madsen, McMahan for his first Skagit Speedway victory

ALGER, Wash. – Aug. 31, 2013 – Donny Schatz charged to his 18th World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory of the season on Saturday night by passing Kerry Madsen midway through the Monster Meltdown and driving away to the checkered flag at Skagit Speedway.

Madsen earned his fourth consecutive podium finish after leading the first 17 laps but couldn’t cool off Schatz, who was cruising to victory in the 35-lap feature until a caution on the last lap forced him to hold off Madsen and the rest of the field on a green-white-checkered finish.

Paul McMahan duplicated his third-place performance from Friday night while Cody Darrah finished fourth after starting eighth. Joey Saldana finished fifth and returned to fifth in the series’ overall championship standings.

While pole-sitter Madsen jumped to an early lead, Saldana was locked in a battle with McMahan for second. McMahan eventually captured the spot as Schatz quickly pulled close to Saldana. The pair battled fiercely for 10 laps before Schatz could finally complete the pass. (more…)

Ellis Goes Wire-To-Wire For NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS West Plains Wi

1102485_690478634302793_498353030_o WEST PLAINS, MO – Evan Ellis of Plantersville, MS drove the Ellis Welding Special to a wire-to-wire win in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series 50-lap main event at West Plains Motor Speedway. Ellis picked up his first career series win with a 1.971 margin of victory over Chandler Petty of Austin, AR in the Whistle Stop Barbeque Rocket.

Brent Barrett of Cleveland, MS took his best finish of the season with a third-place effort in the Custom Spraying, Inc. GRT that resulted from an inside move on the last turn of the last lap when he passed Jason Hughes of West Plains, MO, who finished fourth in the Gary’s Tire and Automotive Rocket. Barrett was also the Rookie of the Race.

National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee and NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point leader Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN was fifth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Special, and got a little closer to the 2013 $20,000 Championship.

With three races left in the season, Johnson left West Plains Motor Speedway with a 98-point lead over Kyle Bronson of Brandon, FL. Bronson moved up to the second spot in the point standings after taking a provisional, starting 23rd in the Brandon Ford Warrior and finishing 12th to earn the Hedman Husler of the Race Award. Moyer the Man in Pepsi 50 River Days Rumble at Portsmouth

Moyer PORTSMOUTH, OH (August 31, 2013) – It has been several years since Hall-of-Famer Billy Moyer last visited Portsmouth Raceway Park. After Saturday night, he can put his name in the hat as a contender for the Dirt Track World Championship at PRP in October. He led all the way as he captured the Pepsi 50 River Days Rumble sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. Moyer collected $15,000 for his win tonight.

Moyer’s second LOLMDS win of the season came before a packed house despite threating weather all night. Jimmy Owens; the current LOLMDS point’s leader; finished second, followed by 12th starting Dennis Erb Jr., 18thstarting Scott Bloomquist and Jason Feger.

“You have to give a big thanks to the track and Lucas Oil crew for getting this race in! They had some heavy rain this morning. The track was great all night and it had three grooves. To beat the rain, you have to take your hats off to everyone involved! We have not run here for several years, and I would say it was probably back in the GVS days that I was here. August Ends With Action At Bubba Raceway Park

Jim Rouse – Ocala, FL-The Bubba Army 360 Sprint Cars, Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, TQ Late Models, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators all put on spectacular shows on a cool night at Bubba Raceway Park.

The Bubba Army Hobby Stocks kicked off the night with Devin Walker and Mike Stalnaker running away from the pack. Walker would lead the opening seven before Scott Washam spun exiting turn four. On lap ten, Stalnaker pulled out a daring crossover on Devin Walker, but contact resulted in Walker spinning. A great battle was over with Stalnaker pitting for a right front tire. Eric Moon rocketed to the lead on the restart with Walker falling into second, right in front of his father. “The Lunar Lander” Eric Moon took home his first career win at Bubba Raceway Park with Walker slotted in behind him. Stalnaker rallied to third while Joey Forsyth took home a solid fourth place finish and Heath Walker completed the top five.

Our Limited Late Models kicked action off with Kevin Mills, Tyler Clem, and Shane Koperda getting into a turn one melee with Clem and Mills retiring with excessive damage. On the next restart, leader Jordan Lockhart lost his left front and started a wreck that involved JO Nobles and Shane Koperda. Both would continue, but Lockhart was done for the night. Nevin Gainey would take the lead with JO Nobles and Shanke Koperda in tow. They would remain in that order with Gainey winning over Nobles, Koperda, Chuck Jackson, and Jordan Lockhart. (more…)

Snaps Rare Win Drought On National Tour With Second Career Triumph At Track In Home State

083013WestVa MINERAL WELLS, WV – Aug. 30, 2013 – Josh Richards ended a rare World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory drought on Friday night, rolling to a convincing triumph in the 50-lap RaceFest A-Main at West Virginia Motor Speedway.

In winning for the second time this season at a track in his home state – after falling short of victory at West Virginia facilities for the first nine years of his racing career – the 25-year-old star from Shinnston, W.Va., snapped a nine-race winless stretch on the national tour. He also padded his WoO LMS points lead – an edge he actually continued to build with consistent finishes during his modest checkered-flag slump.

“It feels like it’s been forever since we’ve been in Victory Lane,” said Richards, whose eighth WoO LMS win of 2013 was his first since July 11 at Red River Co-op Speedway in Winnipeg, Manitoba. “We’ve had some really good runs (over the past month-and-a-half), but we’ve just been lacking a little bit and we had a few races where we had stuff just not go our way. Keith Nosbisch Wins By Mere Inches Over Crouse In Late Model Feature At East Bay Raceway Park

August 31, 2013 – Tampa, FL – It was a night of non-stop action at East Bay Raceway Park as five divisions were on hand. Late Models had their warm-up race before the Scott Thompson Memorial next weekend on September 7^th. Also on hand tonight were the Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds, Outlaw Fours, Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks and the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers.

First feature of the night was the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks. Winning their heats were Mike Wilson and Thomas Burnside. For the front row of the 15 Lap Feature Event were Justan Rodgers and Thomas Burnside. When the green flag waved it was Burnside taking over the lead on lap one and not looking back as he had Mike Wilson and Justan Rodgers trying to chase him down. Burnside was leading until his brother William Burnside spun with just five laps remaining. That put Wilson and Rodgers right on his back bumper for the five remaining laps. With just one lap to go it was fourth place Micheal Eaton spinning in turn four bringing out the final caution of the race. So when the green and white were waved together, Burnside went on to win his very first feature in the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Street Stocks. Rounding out the top five were Mike Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Jr., Buck Woodhouse and William Burnside. (more…)

Swindell Dominates World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars at Skagit

Earns third victory of the season, first win at Washington track since 1979

083013_SKAGIT_VL_650x400 (1) ALGER, Wash. – Aug. 30, 2013 – Sammy Swindell dominated the opening round of the Monster MeltdownFriday night at Skagit Speedway to earn his third World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series victory of the season and his first win at the Washington bullring since 1979.

Kerry Madsen was the runner-up for his third consecutive podium finish as Paul McMahan, Joey Saldana and World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship leader Daryn Pittman rounded out the top five with the series embarking on its west coast Gold Rush Tour of nine races in 10 nights.

Swindell, a three-time series champion, started the 25-lap A-main from the pole position and controlled it through three stoppages, two reds and a caution, by a using his track position on each restart to control the pace coming back to green.

“Well I know how to make them take off,” said Swindell, of Germantown, Tenn. “That was good to start up front, this Big Game Treestands Maxim was just rolling. We had a different Parker motor in there tonight that would just take off from a crawl. We finally hit it right, started in the right spot and had a good car to keep us up there.”

Madsen finished second in his Keneric Racing EarthEx KPC to complete a game of podium bingo after running first and third last weekend while the series was in Edmonton.

“I actually butchered the original start and lost some spots, but pushed really hard on the following restarts and had a good car there at the end,” said Madsen, of St. Marys, N.S.W., Australia. “The car was fantastic and we had a great run. The cushion was as heavy as I’ve ever seen it here and it took me half the race to figure out to keep the right rear off of it, and once I started cheating it I ran a lot faster and was running those guys down.” (more…)

Owens Outstanding in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Visit to Attica

ATTICA, OH (August 30, 2013) – Jimmy Owens continued his stronghold on the series with his 7th victory on Friday Night at Attica Raceway Park. He took the lead on lap six and led the rest of the way, pocketing $10,000 for the win. Brian Birkhofer came home in second, followed by Earl Pearson Jr., John Blankenship, and Steve Francis.

“I have to thank all these great fans for coming out tonight! This is our first time here, and we really like this place,” said Owens, who started third in the race. “We had a super car all night long! I think the first two finishers picked the same tire compound to run, and it paid off.”

Owens made a daring move to the inside of the track on the opening lap to take the lead from Russ King and Birkhofer. King fought back and took the lead from Owens on lap three and led the race for three circuits until Owens got back by him. King then held the second spot, using the top groove on the racetrack. Birkhofer got by King for second on lap 12 and stayed there for the remainder of the race.

“I have to thank my car owner Mike Reece, Reece Monument Company, Sunoco Race Fuels, Red Line Oil, Gantte Appraisals, Midwest Sheet Metal, and all of my other sponsors for making this possible. It is a great way to start the weekend and hopefully we can go to Portsmouth and I-77 with the same results.”

Birkhofer was in the ASi Racewear, MB Customs Chevrolet and was racing for the first time in three weeks after breaking his hand last month. “We didn’t have anything for Jimmy tonight; he was too strong. To come here after being off for so long and to run well with these guys felt really good. I will probably sleep pretty well tonight. It’s going to be a long weekend!” (more…)

It’s Not Funny Anymore- Stay Away Rain!

Jim Rouse, Ocala, FL- After our second consecutive rain-out at Bubba Raceway Park, it’s getting pretty aggravating. The Bubba Army 360 Sprints will try to be the deterrent of the rain, while the Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, TQ Late Models, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators have received the call as well. It’s set to be a great night of racing this Saturday!

In the Bubba Army 360 Sprints, Robbie Smith holds an eight point advantage over “Capatian” Tony Agin. Both drivers are winless at the track since the reconversion to dirt in 2008, but both are very consistent. A couple more winless drivers sit within 25 of the leader in Terry Witherspoon (-22) and rookie Andy Cobb (-24). AJ Maddox completes the top five, but sits 37 back after a couple of rough finishes. Danny Martin, Jr. and Matt Kurtz have a win each in the points paying rounds, and Kurtz has a non-points win on the season.

Tyler Clem holds a 16 point advantage over Jason Pope in the Limited Late Models after three rounds, one of which was won by now-11-year-old Clem. Chuck Jackson sits a further seven back, while Tim Powers- two time winner in 2013- is fourth, 46 back. Forrest Gough continues to see wins go to the wayside with misfortunes, but it will make that win so much sweeter. CARTERSVILLE, GA – The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division is ready to embark on a three-race Labor Day Weekend journey that will take them to Batesville Motor Speedway in Batesville, AR on Friday night, West Plains Motor Speedway in West Plains, MO on Saturday night, and Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS on Sunday night.

Round 17 of the 2013 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division will be Batesville Motor Speedway for a 40-lap $2,000-to-win race. West Plains Motor Speedway will present Round 18 on Saturday night with a 50-lap $2,500-to-win race. Both Batesville Motor Speedway and West Plains Motor Speedway are first time venues for the Touring Division.
