UDLMCS Race at Hendry County Motorsports Park Postponed

by Cynthia Cavin, Speedway Media

Sunoco United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series director Ken Kinney has decided to pull the plug on the race scheduled at Hendry County Motorsports Park for this Saturday, March 13th.  As Kinney explained the situation, the Sunoco United Dirt Late Model schedule was planned far in advance, and this event was inadvertently scheduled on top of the season opener at Volusia County Speedway.

Kinney stated that in order to be a good working partner with the racing facilities that host his series events throughout the season, he would rather postpone or even cancel the event rather than create a situation that could pull cars away from any speedway that hosts UDLMCS races in 2010.No firm decision has been made as to whether the event will be made up at a future date or not, and it is possible that the event could be rescheduled at another Florida race track later in the UDLMCS calendar year.

Series officials will confer with possible host tracks for a suitable date and make a decision from there. Kinney added that hopefully the race can be rescheduled at a time when the Florida weather is warmer, and therefore more comfortable for fans and racers alike.  A regular divisional late model race will run at Hendry County Motorsports Park in place of the postponed series race.

The postponement means that the next scheduled race for the Sunoco United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series Southern Division will be at North Florida Speedway in Lake City, on Saturday May 1st.  That event will be a 50 lap race with $3000 going to the winner.

Wayne Anderson Makes It Two in a Row for FAST at Orlando SpeedWorld

Orlando Speedworld; Orlando, Florida: Race scheduled for Saturday, March 6, 2010. For the second consecutive event, the weather was perfect for racing as the Sunoco Florida All Stars Tour traveled to Orlando Speedworld for the running of the Discount Propane 100. A great field of 31 Super Late Model, Limited Late Model, and Crate Late Model entries took qualifying laps, with Series Rookie Randy Anderson of Wildwood setting fast time of 13.800 (97.826 mph) in the No. 86 Airframe International Chevrolet. Lakeland’s Steve Doror qualified second in the No. 110 RaceCar Engineering entry, with Tyler Laing in the No. 39, Dalton Zehr in the No. 119, AJ Corelli in the No. 2, and Wayne Anderson in the No. 84 rounding the top 6 spots. Laing was later disqualified at Tech Inspection, moving Austin Kirkpatrick into the sixth qualifying spot.

B-Main Results

Sunoco FAST rules call for cars qualifying lower than the top 24 to compete in a B-Main feature. With Laing moving to the B-Main, the field for the 25-lap B-Main was set at seven cars. David Weaver, starting on the pole, was followed by Jeremy Gerstner, Daniel Maddox, Mike Cenzi, Perry Lovelady, Cody Lane, and Tyler Laing. Weaver held the point for the first 14 laps, with Laing moving taking the lead and holding it through the remaining laps for the win.

There were no injuries. Late in the race, Steve Dorer mounted a furious charge, including a last lap sprint to the outside that brought him to the finish line just three feet short of Anderson. Surprises Abound At Ocala Speedway Opener

by BJ Cavin

Race fans and racers braved a frosty Florida night as they gathered to reopen the historic Ocala Speedway for another exciting season of racing, and Florida’s oldest speedway did not disappoint.  The Sunoco United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series was also kicking off their season as a part of the festivities at Ocala, as were Ocala’s own Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Mini Stocks.  The fans and racers also collected over $260 to pass along to the founder and operator of Karnac.com and Real Racin’ USA, Jack Smith.  Smith has recently been undergoing extensive surgery and was diagnosed with cancer.

Much of the attention on the night went to the Sunoco United Dirt Late Models as the new and improved version of the racing series debuted.  The Ocala race officially was part of the new Southern division of the UDLMCS, but racers from the north also participated.  Also garnering plenty of attention was the newly formed team included Ocala’s own Ivedent Lloyd and Darrell Padgett.  That attention to this Roush-Yates powered team would last well into the early morning hours after Ivedent Lloyd wasted no time in setting the bar high, as he set fast time in qualifying with a blistering 16.275 on his second solo lap. Modifieds Back in Action – Legends & Bandoleros Hit the Track Saturday Night at Auburndale

by Dave Westerman

Auburndale Speedway hosts its third Saturday night of racing for the 2010 season with the Legend Cars and Bandoleros getting their first laps of the year while the Open Wheel Modifieds do battle for the second time in three weeks.

Bobby Blake was in the right place at the right time in the OWM feature two weeks ago, running third when the lead pair tangled giving him an advantage he wouldn’t let go of as he led Harold “Boom Boom” Cannon and David Grogan to the stripe.  The win was especially sweet for Blake who just recently had a new addition to his family.  Fifteen cars showed up in the Modified class on opening night and even more are expected this week.

After getting a bit of a “rest period” following the February
Winternationals in Orlando, The Legend Cars and Bandoleros will be out for their first action of the year this week.

Several new faces are expected in both classes.  Bandolero drivers Danielle Stratton and Coty Bibeau are moving up to the Legends class and several other new drivers are expected as well to challenge 2009 champion Justin Brown.
As usual the Mini Stocks have supplied plenty of cars and plenty of action the first two weeks.  Last weeks winner Chris Spring has a slim two point lead over Chris Narramore, Sr., the winner on opening night, in the current standings.

Jeff Waterman has parlayed an opening night third place finish with his win last week into the current point lead in the Street Stock division while Josh Borem leads the V-8 Bomber points after scoring back-to-back wins to open the year.  Last weeks Scrambler winner Matt Johns leads the point battle in that class by 12 over Brian Tyre going into week three.  All three classes see action again this week.

Grandstand gates open at 5PM with racing promtly at 7PM.  During
intermission, drivers will be passing through the stands with their helmets in an effort to raise some funds for Jack Smith, long-time Florida racing writer and proprietor of the Karnac.com web site which hosts the Florida Stock Car Racing web pages.  Smith has been battling severe back problems which led to a tumor being discovered in his back.  Smith’s family is still awaiting word if the tumor is actually cancerous but he is now home and healing from the surgery but he will be out of commission for quite a spell.

Track officials have announced a special “fan-friendly” practice night on March 19th, the night before the F.A.S.T Late Model race on March 20th.  All fans are welcome to come into the pits to watch practice and hobnob with the drivers and teams on Friday night.  Admission to the pit area will be $15 and includes a free Bar-b-cue sponsored by Sonny’s, plenty of beer and a live country band.  Fans can then hold on to their Friday night pit ticket and get $5 off their grandstand admission on Saturday night.
