Grill wins Race #3 at Five Flags Speedway

Flashbacks washed over Augie Grill at Five Flags Speedway on Friday. The uneasiness caused him to squirm a little his Super Late Model seat.

The two-time Snowball Derby champion lost the Blizzard Series season opener when on a late caution he began leaking fluid, putting a sudden and dramatic end to his night. When another came out on Lap 91 during the U.S.A. Digital 100 on Friday, Grill was bound to not let history repeat itself.

Lesson learned, as Grill made a dominant return to Victory Lane. “That first race was heartbreak,” said Grill, who was dominant from qualifying and thereafter. “I didn’t smell in the car anything this time. I thought we’d be all right when everybody got back out. Fortunately, I was able to pull away.” He drove away from the youngster Chase Elliott, who won here last month and unofficially took the Blizzard points lead after finishing as the runner-up.

Elliott led a good portion of the race early, but could not close the door when Grill came barreling down on him in the middle of the race. “I worked as hard as I could, but Augie was too tough,” the 14-year-old said. “It’ll be our goal from here on out to win every week.”

On a night full of bright pink, purple, green, orange and more fireworks, yellow was the color that stole the show at Five Flags. An inaugural competition yellow promised to add a bit of drama to the Blizzard Series. Yet, as expected, it had little effect on the usual cast of characters that drive up front. “Basically, it worked out like it would’ve had everybody pitted on Lap 80, you know,” Grill said. “It was nothing too different, except I didn’t have to beat everybody out in the pits.”

He had his white No. 112 running on all cylinders, even though he didn’t make it easy on himself. Fastest in qualifying, Grill partook in the other Blizzard Series adjustment Friday ? a field invert. On the roll of the die, he figuratively rolled the dice by slamming the die into the asphalt. The gamble did not pay off and the field was set to an eight-car invert. It didn’t matter on this night.

“We didn’t have the car we liked to have on the last race,” Grill said. “We worked on it and got it back to like it was for the first race. We had a really good car tonight.” Among Grill, the fireworks and the series changes, the night’s other highlight was an ultra-competitive battle between Bubba Pollard and Casey Smith late in the race. The pair were door-to-door just prior to Lap 85 as they battled for third and stayed that way for several laps. They sandwiched around Eddie Mercer, down a lap, before Smith finally passed Pollard at the start of Lap 90.

Sportsmen
Stevie Mercer just would not be denied. Starting fifth, Mercer was determined to return to steer his black No. 72 back to Victory Lane. The veteran got his wish, forcing the issue all night to pick up his first win since earlier this season.

“These cars don’t know it’s an asphalt track,” Mercer said. “Loose cars, trading paint, that’s how we like to race. We’ve been in a dry spell. It feels like we’re getting back there.” He topped series points leader Steve Buttrick along the way, as Mercer and Buttrick ran away from the rest of the 12-car field for most of the 25 laps. Mercer passed Buttrick on Lap 14 and never looked back. Not even lapped traffic late in the race could put the brakes on Mercer’s runaway night.

“The car was good, but it was not enough to get by (Mercer),” Buttrick said.

Bombers:
Curtis Faircloth continues to be a thorn in the side of Mike Goraum. For the second time in three races, the Pace native topped the series points leader to find his way to Victory Lane. The bad news for the rest of the Bombers? Faircloth seems destined to be a thorn in more than just Goraum’s side. That was clear from the outset when Faircloth got a good run as the green flag dropped yet, but his hard driving spooked Tracy Soles in the No. 6 and caused a quick caution.

Super Stocks
Randy Thompson continued to pad his series points lead with another victory. Two weeks after his first career victory, Earl Polk finished as the runner-up. Chris Cotto rounded out the top three despite early car troubles.

Racers Battle a Full Moon at Ocala

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

Photos Courtesy of rewingphotos.comOCALA, FL-  Those who ventured to Ocala Speedway on Friday night saw a variety of racing action for five different divisions, and also everything for the best to the worst as far as the races were concerned.  Racers tend to be a superstitious lot, and as the summer sun set in the west, an ominous full moon rose over turn two.  From that point on it was either success of failure on the track, and while the successes were thrilling, so were some of the failures.

The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks provided the first feature event of the night, and quickly set the standard to beat.  Mike Eubanks had a less than wonderful starting position, but as soon as the opening green waved he was powering his way toward the front of the pack.  Dean Jarvis had wasted no time in taking the lead, but later was overcome by Jody Wells, who looked like the car to beat.  Bubba Christian also was strong and made his way forward to challenge Wells, but spun in turn 2 as he and Mike Eubanks battled for second place. The Scott Thompson Memorial Comes To VSP This Saturday

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- Race fans will be lining up early this Saturday, June 26th, as the Scott Thompson Memorial, featuring the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series, hits the clay at Volusia Speedway Park.  According to United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series director Ken Kinney, the Scott Thompson Memorial has grown in prestige and now is one of the two “jewels” of late model racing in the southeastern region, and will bring a solid field of top late model racers to VSP, and all of them will be hungry to add their names to the honored list of race winners.  In addition to the Thompson Memorial, fans will also see exciting action from the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, and the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks.

The Scott Thompson Memorial honors the memory of one of the more popular racers in the late model ranks in Florida, who tragically lost his life in a non racing related automobile accident in May of 2006.  At the time of his unfortunate passing, Scott Thompson was battling toward the 2006 National Late Model Series Rookie of the Year title, and had already established himself as the Volusia Speedway Park Late Model Champion in 2005.  The Thompson family remains dedicated to racing and to the legacy created by Scott’s achievements, plus the many deep friendships and the respect that he developed with his rival racers, directing their energy and love of the sport into this special race each season.

The 50 lap race will again pay a $3800 check to the winner of the main event in memory of Scott Thompson’s #38 late model, and as was the case last year, the Thompson family has commissioned Scott Sweet of Sweet Grafix to design and build a special guitar trophy that is unique to this race, and that will be a cherished addition to any racer’s trophy collection. The second and third place finishers will receive special award cups from the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series.

The Scott Thompson Memorial is special to the racers because of who and what it memorializes, but it also marks a change for the racers who have been competing with the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series in 2010.  Series director Ken Kinney points out that after this race the northern and southern regions of the UDLMCS will combine into a “chase” format, which will open up the points battle and begin a whole new race to the season championship. Ivedent Lloyd has a virtual lock on the northern region title, while Keith Nosbisch holds a mere 20 point advantage over Mark Whitener in the south.  Once the two regions combine it will be anyone’s title to chase, with racers like two time defending UDLMCS Champion Johnny Collins possibly getting back into the hunt and looking for an elusive “three-peat.”  UDLMCS races have produced 5 different winners in 7 events so far in 2010, with Phillip Cobb becoming a first time winner in the prestigious Powell Memorial at Ocala Speedway earlier this month.

The excitement will not diminish as three of Volusia Speedway Park’s most competitive divisions accent the evening along with the Scott Thompson Memorial.  Shaun Daugharty will be hoping to build on his one point advantage over Aaron Barsness in the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman points race, while Phillip Brown will be defending the same scant advantage over Tim Hughes with the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks.  And no one will want to miss the next chapter in the newest on track rivalry between Scott Mooers and Chad Scranton, as the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks return for another round.

Volusia Speedway Park will offer an open practice session for all divisions on Friday, June 25th, from 6PM until 9PM, in preparation for Saturday night’s events.  The pit gate will open at 2PM on Saturday with driver’s meetings at 5:45 and practice at 6:15.  The grandstand gates will open on Saturday at 5PM for early birds to grab the best seats, and to witness qualifying which is set to begin at 6:45.  Heat racing will begin at 7:30PM with B mains and features to follow, and for more information fans can access www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net.

The Top Gun Sprints made their second visit of 2010 to the North Florida Speedway in Lake City on Saturday June 19, 2010. There were 11 cars at the track to give fans two heat races and a 15 lap feature race due to rain delay and a curfew.

The heat races are lined up using a pill pull system, and Shawn Murray in the 22 had the pole for the start of the first heat race, with Mark Ruel Jr. on the outside. Which Mark had the better start and took the race lead at the start and held on to take the race win. Ryan Partin had the pole for the start of the second heat race in the 14 car, with Rich Pratt on the outside Rich had the better start and lead all the laps till last one and got to low in turn 3 and made contact with the tire and cause him to spin up the track letting Ryan drive pass him to take the checkered flag and the win.
