Punta Gorda Speedway Now Official

By Jack Smith

Includes commentary

The long awaited change in ownership at Charlotte County Motorsports Park has finally come to pass. In a press release this afternoon,  the  speedway announced it will experience a rebirth under a new name and new ownership.

The release from the new management is as follows:

As of 11:00am on Friday 05-07-2010 the airport authority has approved the sale of CCMP.

The new owners Mike Chase & Kevin Williams now own and will be operating Punta Gorda Speedway LLC. They are committed to making the speedway a first class facility. They have named Greg Roeback Speedway Coordinator.

To set the record straight there has been no restoration of any kind at CCMP since we last raced on April 24th, 2010.

Moving forward the new owners have a plan in place to start the clean up and preparing for the Memorial day grand opening of Punta Gorda Speedway on 05-29-2010. We would like to welcome everyone to our grand opening of Punta Gorda Speedway for fun, prizes and great racing atmosphere. A full schedule will be posted soon.

The classes that will be running opening night 05-29-2010 are as follows: Open Wheel Modified 50 lap feature event Pro 4 Fab 4 Road Warriors Mini Cups Legends Bandoleros

PUNTA GORDA SPEEDWAYS NEW FAN FRIENDLY FRONT GATE PRICING IS AS FOLLOWS: ADULTS $10.00 SENIORS $8.00 KIDS AGES 11-17 $5.00 KIDS 10 & UNDER FREE WITH PAYING ADULT
-End of Release-

Fans will be greatly pleased about the new grandstand seating ticket prices.  A $10 is much more inline with today’s economy and the south Florida demographics. Kevin Williams is a very successful businessman with a deep passion and personal and family invovement in the Florida racing community. Greg Roeback is a professional all down the line.

Outgoing promoter Bobby Diehl, though he made many mistakes, some of them frightful, gave his heart and soul to the speedway over the last several years.   While many will pick his tenure as owner of the speedway apart over the next months, we think it wise to remember how hard he tried, doing the best he could. When the final chapter is written and Charlotte County’s race track  has gone the way of Hialeah and Sunshine, Bobby Diehl will have proven to be a positive influence on the Charlotte racing community.

We wish the new ownership and management the best and encourage fans statewide to support the new effort.

Don Rehm – Promoter of the Year 2009

By Jack Smith

Don Rehm 2009 Promoter of the YearEach year KARNAC.com and Real Racing USA get together to acknowledge Florida’s top promoter for the preceding year.  Sometimes this is quite a difficult decision as there are always several individuals who run a step above the crowd.

This year the decision was made very easily by the simply outstanding work of Don Rehm in bringing sprint car racing back to a prominent position in the short track mix of Florida racing.

Don Rehm not only continued to expand the asphalt side of the ledger, but with the creation and steady hand on the throttle of the Top Gun Sprint series, he has revitalized dirt sprint car racing for Florida fans and drivers.

KARNAC’s Bill Green presented Don with the Promoter of the Year Award on April 17 at Citrus County Speedway.  The Checkered Flag Sprint Series was on hand with 18 wingless sprints burning up the asphalt 1/4 mile track.

LISTEN TO PRESENTATION AT CITRUS COUNTY

We wish Don Rehm all the success in 2010 as he continues to push the envelope and expand sprint car racing in Florida.

Gary Laplant Leaving Charlotte County Motorsports Park

KARNAC MEDIA

After serving two years as an investor and partner with owner Bobby Diehl at Charlotte County Motorsports Park, Gary Laplant of Tampa is moving on.

Charlotte County has been having financial issues of late that have resulted in rumors of management change and possible ownership change.  At least one of those rumors is now turned to a fact.

The following statement was issued by Gary Laplant this morning:
Over the last week I have given this great thought.

My last weekend at CCMP as operation director will be 04/24/10.

I always told myself when it got to the point that racing was not fun anymore it would be time to give it up. That time has come where its not fun any more at CCMP. (more…)

2009 Awards Announcements

KARNAC MEDIA RELEASE

Every year at this time KARNAC.com presents the Pete Orr Sportsmanship Award, usually at the Pete Orr Memorial at New Smyrna Speedway.  This year the award will not be presented at that time, but will be presented later in the year.  We expect to announce the time and place of the Pete Orr Sportmanship Award presentation  in April.

This award has become one of the more special tributes given to Florida racers in recent years.  Jay Middleton, Lee Collins, Brian Finney, Bobby Sears, Tim Russell and Chad Pierce have received the award.  The first presentation of this very special award was in 2004, following the tragic loss of one of Florida’s finest racers and perhaps its best ambassador.

Bobby Sears, the 2007 recipient,  was asked a year ago what winning this award meant to him.  He said it was among the most memorable of all his racing achievements.  Bobby keeps his beautiful Italian silver and mahogany cup on his TV so he can see it all the time.

For more about the life of Pete Orr and what he meant to stock car racing use this link in our History section.

The  Inside Florida Racing Driver of the Year, sponsored by Hilderbrand Jewelers, will be presented later in February.  The Driver of Year will receive a stunning Championship gold and diamond ring valued at over $3000.00.  Last year dirt late model ace Johnny “The Locomotive” Collins from Jacksonville, Florida earned the award.

Real Racin’ USA and KARNAC.com will also present the Promoter of the Year Award to Florida’s top race promoter in March. Last year Mike Peters and Angie Clifton, owners of Ocala Speedway, earned the award for their efforts in the tremendous turnaround at that race track.

Ocala Speedway is featured in the February edition of Dirt Late Model Magazine.  The article, “Ocala Speedway Returns to Its Roots” details the amazing transition of the central Florida short track, and goes behind the scenes laying out the heavy lifting that was required of Mike and Angie in this venture. It is truly a short track  success story.

Copies of Dirt Late Model Magazine are are available at Florida’s dirt tracks during the winter racing and also can be obtained through the magazine’s web site.

As the 2010 racing season gears up in Florida, we want to again thank all the promoters, great fans  and especially the drivers who contribute to making short track stock car racing a great way to spend a Friday or Saturday night throughout the year.

East Bay Rings Out 2009 with Six Features

By Larry Jewett

The 2009 season came to a close at East Bay Raceway Park with six divisions giving the fans a full night of entertainment.

The action started with the Gagel’s Open Wheel Modifieds. John Bradley scored the daily double with a win in his heat and a victory in the feature. Bradley took the lead from the beginning and made the field chase him to the flag. Shane Burrows, Roger Crouse, Jeff Mathews and Brian Hollifield rounded out the top five. Mathews was the track champion.

The Outlaw 4 points were still in contention as the class entered its final night of action. Point leader Stephen Hohlbaugh and Cecil Martin were winners. The heat win for Hohlbaugh cinched the title, but there was still a matter of the 15-lap feature. That main was captured by Brian Danforth, who scored his fifth feature of the year. Danforth took the lead from Dan Chambers, who finished second, ahead of Matt Haynes, Amanda Rogers and Michael Gulvin. (more…)
