LILLEY ALL THE WAY IN OPEN WHEEL MODIFIEDS – DAUBACH TOPS SPORTSMAN AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

A good crowd of fans for a Labor Day holiday weekend waited out a brief “sunshower” then were treated, as usual, to a great night of racing at Auburndale Speedway.

Just seven Open Wheel Modifieds made the trip to the track this week as several “regulars” had holiday plans and couldn’t get away to race. Promoter Rex Guy decided to cut the number of laps from 40 to 30 but still paid the full purse.

The Modified night would belong to Keith Lilley as he won the heat race, then led all 30 laps from his pole starting spot. It wasn’t as easy as it sounds though as point leader James Wright III dogged Lilley the entire distance but could never make an attempt to pass as the race ran green to checker. Lilley took his second win of the year trailed by Lilley and Big Wayne Morris. Ronnie Heard, Jr. crossed the line in fourth followed by Josh Todd, Ricky Coffin and Bobby Blake. (more…)

Little Aisylin Succumbs to Illness

KARNAC Media

We received the following news from Rick Bristol today:

Orlando, Florida (August 30, 2010)  – It is with a very sad heart that C.A.R.S. Racing for a Cause, Inc. announces the passing of three year old Aisylin Bledsoe, one of the children that this year’s Charity Truckers 200 race is helping. Aisylin passed away yesterday at 8:05 a.m.

Aisylin, in spite of her three short years on this earth, touched many lives as she fought her Stage 4 Neuroblastoma cancer.   Her family will still be included in this year’s charity event due to all the medical bills and now funeral expenses they must face from this terrible disease.

Donations to the Bledsoe family can be sent thru C.A.R.S. Racing for a Cause Inc. and will be sent to the family to help in whatever need that they may have now –  medical bills or funeral services for their “angel”.

Please keep Aisylin and the Bledsoe family in your prayers.

Rick Bristol’s annual Charity Truckers 200 is held  at Orlando Speedway and has grown every year since its inception in 2006. (more…)

Track Owners Meeting on the Horizon

By Jack Smith

Rex Guy, promoter of Auburndale Speedway,  is calling for a speedway promoter’s meeting for Monday October 4th.  The meeting will be held at Hooters Restaurant at I-4 and US Hwy 98 in Lakeland, Florida.

Guy feels the owners and promoters would be well served by getting together to  iron out some of the conflicts that occur in scheduling events.

Anyone who pays any attention to the state of asphalt racing in Florida is aware of  late model, modified, truck racing and other events often held on the same dates at several tracks.   Saturday, August 28th is a perfect example of this. New Smyrna Speedway has a 75 lap Pro Truck race while Punta Gorda Speedway has a Pro Truck race also.  While it is far from settled as to whether this is harmful to the sport, many fans and drivers feel it is, even as in this case, the tracks are 160 miles apart. Legends & Limited Late Models Highlight PGS Action

By Bill Green

David Weaver winner of the Limited Late Model 50

The Legends brought 10 of their high powered, light weight, lighting fast cars to the green for the Perfect Pest Control of Southwest Florida 40-Lap Feature.

Fans watched as Bandoleros winner Mark Hooven, all the way from Orlando, took the win for a double feature win night. Following Hooven would be Sarasota’s Brady Marshall second, with Ft Myers driver Mike Verhaagh third. Fourth went to pole-sitter Mike Fazio after battling back from an early spin. Settling for fifth was Port S Lucie resident, Carl Haag.

Bandoleros got the action started early, and the winner of the event would be Mark Hooven, followed by brother Shawn Hooven, but it was a side-by-side dual that entertained the crowed as the lead swapped 5 times in the 12-lap event, with Mark besting Shawn with just two laps left to go for the win. Larry MacMillan Memorial 100

Three wide action in the Larry MacMillan Memorial 100

Three wide action in the Larry MacMillan Memorial 100

When you can get 33  open wheel modifieds show up for a 100 lap race in central Florida these days it is a big deal.   So it was at Citrus County Speedway this past Saturday night, a big deal indeed for the first Annual Larry MacMillan Memorial 100.

While most asphalt tracks these days in Florida would be happy to get half as many,  Citrus seems to have found something with the modifieds.  There were enough cars to run a “B” Main, which earned the top two cars in the 20 lap race a trip to the night’s featured 100 lap event.  Interestingly, two of Florida’s top drivers, both track champions and winners of major events, did not  finish high enough to get in the feature.  Mulberry’s  Wayne Morris and New Smyrna Beach’s Jerry Symons,  one of the best to ever race at New Smyrna  Speedway,  had to pack up and watch from the grandstands.
