The Daytona Harley-Davidson 360 sprints go 4 wide in a salute to Jack Miller
BARBERVILLE, FL- After three consecutive weeks with no racing at Volusia Speedway Park, nature finally granted a pass to the big half mile oval and the postponed “Holy Cow 25” Jack Miller Memorial Race featuring the Daytona Harley-Davidson 360 Sprint Cars took to the clay. The night also featured exceptional racing from the Florida Mini Sprint Association, plus hot action for the Daytona Machine Shop Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, Volusia Speedway’s Thunder Stocks, and the Sparkle and Shine Car Wash Challengers.  (more…)

Streaks End At Bubba Raceway Park

By Jimmy Rouse- Bubba Raceway Park Media

Once again the Central Florida rains hit Bubba Raceway Park on a Saturday, but at 4:30 the call was made that the show would go on. The crew worked diligently and racing eventually got under way as the fans waited patiently for some of the best racing in Florida. With UMP Open-Wheel Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks for $500 and double points, Mini Stocks, and Gladiators all running, the car count once agaion exceeded 100. Of course, adding to the excitement was the early flyover by Bubba himself.

The Hobby Stocks were called upon first and put on an exciting show with passing all over. Going into turn 3 on the first lap, Mike Tovet and Buck Woodhouse found themselves facing the wrong direction, forcing Flagman Larry Bowden to put a complete restart out. The field went 4 laps before Tovet slowed in turn 1 with an unknown problem. Howard Osteen’s 88 slowed at pit-in at the scheduled half-way point and the caution was out once more. On the restart, Robert Sirmons ran out of power and stopped in turn 4, and Matt Shea, with nowhere to go, hit the 94 and spun, ending Shea’s night. Sirmons would continue. It would be another 2 laps until the next caution was out, this for Sirmons who was slow due to a flat tire. The timer expired and the Hobby Stocks were shortened by 5 laps. Kevin Durden started outside pole and had led every lap, but in turns 3 and 4 as the leaders came to the white flag, Tim Powers powered by as Ed Hill made contact with both, Durden receiving the worst of it. Powers took the win and the early season points lead, with Billy Carlbert, Jr. a strong 2nd, Eric Moon put the 07 in 3rd position, Kevin Durden in 4th after dominating the event, and Buck Woodhouse made an impressive comeback for 5th.

The Mini Stock feature was a great chase for the lead that Nick Hebrank held. The only caution came out for Cody Kinsey’s spin on the backstretch in which the 11 came trapped by the mud. The likes of Shirlene Hammond, Ray Folwell, and Roberto Morfin, Jr. were given the task of chasing Hebrank, but he held his 9H at the point until the end. Shirlene Hammond had a career night with a heat win earlier to add with her runner-up finish, Ray Folwell built on his points lead with a 3rd place finish, Stephen Hahlbaugh would settle for 4th, and “TacoSon” Roberto Morfin, Jr. rounded out the top 5. However, after a teardown in tech, everyone moved up 1 spot as Hebrank was illegal. Shirlene Hammond took career win #1, Folwell moved up to 2nd, Hahlbaugh up on to the podium, “TacoSon” a strong 4th, and Brittany Yates put the 53 in the top 5.

Feature #3 was the UMP Open-Wheel Modifieds with 25 scheduled laps. Down the backstretch on lap 1, Kyle Bronson and Larry Mott found themselves out of line and facing a different direction. The complete restart went 1 completed before Jim Smith had a problem down the backstretch and found the wall. On lap 5, Larry Mott spun where he had earlier as Garret Stewart, Jim Passino, and Ronald Soltis made contact and traded sheet metal. At the same time, Scott Kurtzner found himself trapped in the dirt at the bottom of the course. Lap 12 saw Kevin Bryant spin in turn 4 forcing a yellow flag. As the race progressed, Steve Whitener took the lead from pole sitter Jason Davis. After 4 laps, under a cution for Scott Kurtzner, the Mathews Motorsports cars pulled to the pit entrance for new helmets with fresh tear-offs. Twice on lap 19 debris was found on the clay. Ronald Soltis set up a Green/White- Checkered that cut the feature down by 3 laps. Whitener held on to the win as Jeff Mathews held on to the points lead with 2nd, Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. finished 3rd, Jason Davis a strong and much needed 4th, and Donnie Hall rounded out the top 5.

The Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks were given extra motivation with $500 on the line and double points. Lap 2 was the first caution as Richard Calmes spun the 4C and Jason Blackmer stalled, ending his night. Another lap went in the books and John Thorpe made contact with Tim Mathieu, both going to the rear with Mathieu spinning to the back. The lap 4 caution was thrown for debris. Chris Shea had a flat on lap 8 which slowed his 76 significantally and the yellow was brought out once more. Todd Roberts found himself in the mud at the bottom of the turn, ending his night at what would be 2 laps early. Gordon Cade and Jeff Baer made contact setting up the Green/White- Checkered. Chad Scranton won his 2nd of 2011 with team-mate Brian Mullins in 3rd. Luke Sadler had some new paint and put it in 2nd, Jonathan Appleby quietly drove to 4th, and Brian Shea rounded out the top 5.

The final feature of the night was the Gladiators. On lap 1, Jason Brown slowed and Robert Graham had nowhere to go but the back of the brand new #112. Both were okay, but the cars weren’t as fortunate. David Anthony spun on lap 4 and would have some work to do if he wanted a ‘money finish’ on the night. Lap 12 saw the S&S Roofing Cars of Larry Langston and Steve Cox almost collide as Langston had lost his wheel. Langston’s wheel was long gone as it bounced over the backstretch fence. The third Green/White-Checkered of the night wasn’t enough for Steve Cox to make it 5-0 in 2011, but Scott Sullivan doesn’t mind. Sullivan was 1st with Cox 2nd, Reid Christensen 3rd, David Anthony drove back to 4th, and Jerry Taylor was last of the ‘money cars’ in 5th.

Bubba Raceway Park is in action July 16th with the Top Gun Sprint Car Series in race 1 of 6 in their Bubba Raceway Park season, the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks return, Young Gun Sprints, Double Feature- 2 races where 2 wins means 100 points!- for the Late Models, and Gladiators. Jenkins and Schnader take 1st wins of the season at Citrus County

From John Chance and Johnny Sanders

Mother Nature has played a big part in the last two races at Citrus County Speedway. The last race on June 25th was in doubt right up until the green flag for the 1st heat. This past Saturday night was no different, rain fell most of the afternoon in the Central Florida area, leaving the race program in jeopardy once again. Practice started right on time at 3pm, and despite a few rain drops during the drivers meeting, the race night started right on time.

16 Open Wheel Modifieds were trying to make their way to victory lane for their 40 lap feature on Saturday night. Billy Bechtelheimer (6) would benefit from the 4 row feature inversion, and start from the pole position, with Tommy Schnader (19) along side. Schnader would launch from his outside pole position to take the early lead. Bechtelheimer would fall into second followed by Robbie Cooper (98). Cooper would get by Bechtelheimer and set his sights on the leader Schnader. A lap 11 caution for the spinning car of Steven Hise (2) would give Cooper the break he needed to catch up to Schnader. On the restart, Schnader would prove he was the man to beat, pulling back out to a comfortable lead in just a few laps. Behind the top 2 drivers, the action was non-stop, which lead to the nights scariest incident. Richie Smith (42) and L.J. Grimm (25) made contact coming out of turn 4 on lap 20 while racing side by side. Grimm’s car would make heavy contact with the front stretch wall while Smith’s car would slide to the infield in a shower of sparks. Once Grimm’s car came to rest, a fire erupted in the fuel cell area, as well as the engine compartment. Grimm quickly exited his car, and the track crew extinguished the blaze in short order. Grimm’s car was hooked to the wrecker, and looks to have a trip to the frame jig in it’s future. Smith would repair his car and rejoin the race at the tail. On the restart Schnader would bring the field to green followed by Cooper and Dalton Nelson (94) in 3rd. Schnader would again take off and build a lead, but behind him, the action was furious. Nelson was now under pressure from the last 2 Modified point champions, Jeremy Gerstner (70) and Curtis Neumann (01). Neumann would make an outside move on both drivers before being squeezed into the backstretch wall by Nelson. Neumann would lift, which let Gerstner fill the hole on the bottom. There would be contact between the 2 drivers entering turn 3, with Gerstner taking the position. One lap later, contact between Gerstner and Neumann again, would send both cars spinning and to the rear of the field. With those 2 drivers now in the rear for the restart, this put the 51 of Josh Todd into the 4th position. Todd had methodically made his way through the field picking cars off one at a time. The lap 24 restart saw Schnader jump back out in the lead, but Todd (51) was coming in a hurry. Todd would get by Nelson for 3rd and continue his charge to the front. Lap 33 would see the last caution of the night for the 81 of Herb Neumann Jr. and give Todd a shot at the win. On the restart Todd would put pressure on Cooper for 2nd right away, and take the position with just 5 laps to go. Schnader would prove to have too large of a lead, and go on to take his 1st feature win of the year. Todd would come home 2nd with Cooper holding on to 3rd. Point leader Bobby Ervien (88) would come from his last row starting position to take a solid 5th place finish just behind Nelson in 4th. Doug Miller (53) and Grimm were the heat race winners.

Cody Stickler took advantage of his outside pole position to take the lead over the 12 car sportsman field. Mark Peterson (73) would fall into 2nd from his pole position followed by Bobby Ervein (8). Heat race winner Chris Harvey (51) was running in the 4th position when his racer would have a rear gear let go right in the middle of the back stretch. Point leader Ernie Reed was following Harvey on the bottom line, and made contact with the now broke Harvey, sending Harvey spinning to the infield. It was a close call for the point leader, which could have cost him dearly in his championship run. Stickler would pace the field on the restart and stretch his lead out at the drop on the green. Back in the field, 8th place starter Brandon Morris, and 11th place starter Aaron Williamson were making a charge to the front. Lap 15 would see a caution for contact between George Gorham Jr. (10) and David Williamson (12). Gorham would be black flagged for rough driving, after pushing Williamson into the outside wall several times, while trying to pass him. Stickler would rocket away on the restart and go on to take his 2nd feature win of the year followed by the hard charging Brandon Morris in 2nd, and new daddy Aaron Williamson in 3rd. Heat race winners were Reed and Harvey.

Point leader David Walls (35) would make it 2 for 2 with his new car, taking the victory in the 20 lap Taylor Made Homes Pure Stock feature. Sheri Makula (27) would get to the front 1st, but could not hold off Walls for the win. A great battle for the 3rd position between Happy Florian (65) and William Stanbury (13) had everyone’s attention for the last few laps of the feature. Florian would make the last lap pass to take 3rd place over Stanbury. Walls now has a nearly put a lock on his 2nd division championship in a row, with a huge 168 point lead. Heat race winners were Makula and Walls.

12 Sheldon Palmes Insurance Mini Stocks took the green for their 20 lap feature with Tim Scalise (24) taking the early lead from his outside pole position. Pole sitter Shawn Jenkins (43) would fall into the 2nd spot. The 1st caution came out on lap 13 for the spinning Jessey Mallory (50), and tightened the field back up. There would be a few attempts to restart this race, but a 2 quick cautions sent Buddy Mallory (51) and Ashlee Williamson (84) to the rear, before the field would complete one lap. Scalise took off on the restart, but pushed wide on turn 4, opening a lane for Jenkins to slip by for the lead. Jeremy Sharrone (32) and Phil Edwards (21) were waging the best battle in the field behind the leaders. Edwards got several good looks on the inside, only to have the door slammed in his face by Sharrone. The tight racing finally caught up with this duo in turn 1 on lap 15, sending both cars for a spin, with Sharrone getting a flat left rear also. Edwards would tag the rear, and Sharrone would return 1 lap down. Jenkins would pull out to a lead on the last restart, while the new 2nd place car of Sonya Heater, was under heavy pressure from Ashlee Williamson (84). Williamson would make the outside groove work, and just edge out Heater at the line for 2nd. Jenkins took his 1st feature win of the season after several weeks of hard work and some bad luck. Heater increased her point lead with her 3rd place finish, and now holds a 15 point lead over 2nd place Kevin Stone (98).

11 Pro Figure 8’s put on perhaps their best race of the year, going almost the whole race without a caution. Joey Catarelli (6) rocketed off of his pole position to set the pace for the entire race. Behind him, 10th place starter Mason Love (01) made his way from the back of the field to challenge front row starter Robbie Powell for 2nd in the last 8 laps of the race. Powell would suffer a flat left rear tire coming to take the white flag, which brought out the caution, and set up a 1 lap shoot out for the win. Catarelli would get a great restart, and never give Love a chance to race for the win. Catarelli took his 2nd feature win of the year, and reclaimed the point lead from Wayne Calkins (14). Love came home 2nd with Benny Harris (3rd). This was indeed the best race of their season, the intersection action looked like a well choreographed dance. We can only hope this type of racing continues for the rest of the season.

12 Outlaw Mod Mini’s made their bi-monthly visit to Citrus County Speedway. Last race was on of the best the series had seen at Citrus, and this race was just as good. There was a 3 way battle right to the checkers with Kevin Campbell (19), Ric Mills (22), and Doug Hopper (15) who started dead last in the field. All three drivers put on an exciting show, that ended with Mills taking his 1st feature win of the year at Citrus. Mills held on to 2nd by fighting off the late charge of Miller.

This week features the Street Stocks, Taylor Made Homes Pure Stocks, Modified Mini Stocks, Inter-County Recycling Hornets, Street Stock/Pure Stock figure 8’s, and the Mini Cup division. Gates open at 4pm and the green flag drops at 6pm. See you at the races!

Gilbertson overcomes adversities to win TBARA sprint feature at 5 Flags

By Chuck Corder

The deck was stacked against Johnny Gilbertson.

His long days led to longer nights at his Central Florida home getting his winged sprint car ready for Friday at Five Flags Speedway.

Once, Gilbertson reached Pensacola his problems continued with a backup car that a teammate drove.

Gilbertson, though, erased all the nightmares with a wire-to-wire victory in the Tampa Bay Area Racing Association winged sprints 30-lap feature.

The race, which featured a pair of cautions, was wrapped up in 16 minutes, 34 seconds. That is moving.

“We almost didn’t come,” the 35 year old said. “We near about pulled the plug because it was raining so bad down there and we heard there was a 70 percent up here tonight.

I’m glad we came.”

It certainly was the understatement of the night.

Gilbertson held on, impressively, when it looked like he was destined to surrender his lead late in the race.

Sprints legend Dave Steele was providing serious pressure, but with five laps to go he lost a cylinder and finished a disappointing 11th out of the 17-car field.

It was just what Gilbertson, a three-time dirt winged sprint champion, needed to coast home for his first pavement victory.

“I thought I was a sitting duck,” Gilbertson admitted. “I was so nervous. I feel like racing against (Steele) means you’ve beat the best. I would’ve liked the opportunity, but trust me that day will come.”

He’ll enjoy this day for a while.

Gilbertson started on the pole after fast qualifier Todd Fayard set the field with a dice roll that netted a eight-car invert.

None of the sprints broke 14 seconds, as they had done last March when Brian Gingras set the track record of 13.885 seconds.

Fayard came the closest, though, turning a 14.077-second lap.

The concession stands were not a popular place when the winged sprint cars torched the half-mile asphalt oval.

Gilbertson built a sizable lead from the outset until the first caution came out with 10 laps complete.

Steele turned on the afterburners, and was on the bumper of Shane Butler for second.

Gilbertson still led, but it was not comfortable any longer.

Butler started second and eventually finished second, but that wasn’t before he had a couple good looks at the lead.

Butler, the defending TBARA champion and current points leader this season, also continued to have some wonderful passing sequences with Steele for the second spot.

“I think we had (Gilbertson) passed,” Butler said. “I could see him working his tires pretty hard. I have a first and second this season. I have no complaints.”

The overflowing crowd had nothing to whine about either.

Winged Sprints 30-Lap Feature Results – 1. Johnny Gilbertson, 2. Shane Butler, 3. Keith Butler, 4. Troy DeCaire, 5.Todd Fayard, 6. Mark Gimmler, 7. Stan Butler, 8. Johnny Gilbert, 9. Sportsmen

Steve Buttrick readily confesses he doesn’t do much to his No. 33 sportsmen.

It’s easy to see why.

Buttrick, the defending track series champion, won for the fourth time this season.

The Cantonment driver started on the pole after Brannon Fowler set an eight-car invert for the 19-car field.

“If Brannon cannot roll an eight, we might have a different finish up here,” Buttrick joked. “I didn’t mean to get into him over there in the corner.”

Fowler finished third to maintain his lead in the points race after several series contenders had lots of trouble.

Jim Pokrant was one of those. He finished 11th and was on pit row late in the race because of a wreck he sustained with Marty White.

Sportsmen 20-Lap Feature Results – 1. Steve Buttrick, 2. Stevie Mercer, 3. Brannon Fowler, 4. Chris Nielsen, 5. Jimmy Goodwin, 6. Tina Davidson, 7. Scott Barbaric, 8. Gary Robinson, 9. Bombers

Curtis Faircloth proved Friday he can win from anywhere on the track.

The series points leader jumped the opening green flag and was pushed to the tail end of the 15-car field.

That didn’t stop him from maneuvering back up front and claim his sixth victory of the season.

“I don’t know what happen at the start of race,” Faircloth said. “I thought I saw everybody go, and they put me in the back for whatever reason. But we didn’t let that stop us.”

What did stop Faircloth, though, came in post-race technical inspection when another driver put in a $1,000 claim on Faircloth’s motor.

Faircloth refused to surrender it and received an immediate disqualification for the evening, forfeiting the victory.

That pushed Brandon Burks to the win, Gary Goodwin to second and Tracy Soles to third.

Faircloth and Burks put on a great show for the last half of the race after the first 10 laps were bogged down by caution. Burks led for a number of laps before finally yielding to Faircloth on the final restart.

Burks was great in the middle of turn Nos. 3 and 4 while Faircloth was picture-perfect on the straightaways.

“Well that was fun,” said Burks, who sits second in points. “I thought we were gonna win one, but Curtis has such a fast car. To get where he’s at, though, it’s amazing.”

Bombers 20-Lap Feature Results – 1. Brandon Burks, 2. Gary Goodwin, 3. Tracy Soles, 4. Sam Mellema, 5. Robert Balkum, 6. Courtney Rodrigues, 7. James Beal III, 8. Kenny Bullard, 9.
