Commentary

The Top Gun Sprints made their first visit of 2011 to Bubba Raceway Park on Saturday July 16, 2011. There were 25 cars at the track to give fans three heat races and a 25 lap feature race.

Kurt Taylor in the 3K car had the pole with Matt Kurtz in the 92 on the outside for the start of the SALDANA heat race. Matt Kurtz took the lead on the start and he took the win. The 6S of Robbie Smith had the pole for the DMI heat race, with Rich Alexander in the 8 car on the outside. It was the 6S that made the better start and took the second heat win. Terry Witherspoon in the 43 car had the pole with A.J. Maddox in the 3A for the start of the BROWN MILLER heat race. After all the passing it was Shawn Murray in the 22 that took the lead and the heat win.

The 4C of Tyler Godwin had the pole for the start of the LUCAS OIL feature race event, with the 6S of Robbie Smith alongside. After a parade lap, the race went to green and it was Robbie Smith in the 6S car that took the lead. After a caution restart it was Tyler Godwin got by Robbie and never looked backed and took the checkered flag, followed by Danny Martin in the 24 car, Robbie Smith in the 6S car, Sport Allen in the 82 car and Matt Kurtz in the 92 car rounding out the top 5.

The staff and racers of the Top Gun Sprints would like to thank everyone for their support and hope to see you at Bubba Raceway Park September 17, 2011. Congratulation goes out to Keith Butler for winning the KSE Hardcharger Award.

Four Divisions With Tight Points Battles Attack Bubba Raceway Park

By Jimmy Rouse- Bubba Raceway Park Media

Bubba Raceway Park puts the UMP Open-Wheel Modifieds back on the clay with the Hobby Stocks on a Double Points night for $750 to win. Also, the Florida Mini Sprints Association make their 3rd appearance of 2011, the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks continue to swap paint and points positions, and the Gladiators look to knock the top man off his throne. Please note that all points totals and points positions used in this article are unoffficial.

Jeff Mathews leads the UMP Open-Wheel Modifieds standings, just as he has in November the last 3 seasons. However, the margin is much closer this season as friend, team-mate, and RaceCar Engineering Late Models points leader Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. is just 2 points behind his team-owner/friend Mathews. Of course, Jim Smith is 30 points behind the leader and Dave Barber is only 2 behind Smith. Kyle Bronson, the only driver with multiple wins in 2011, is 5th and 35 points out of the lead. PJ Wiggins is 1-for-1 at Bubba Raceway Park and Steve Whitener is the previous race winner proving that the top 5 have a kryptonite, but it’s tough to find. The points will have a spotlight just as the leader of the race will this week-end.

Tim Powers has a win and a runner-up finish that count towards the championship and he leads the standings by 20 over Howard Osteen and 23 over Billy Carlbert, Jr. Osteen and Carlbert will be looking for points to gain ground on Powers, but will look behind as Kevin Durden is 14 behind Osteen and Chad Scranton, the only driver with 2 wins in 2011, is 16 behind Osteen. Earlier in the year Mike Tovet took a win and Matt Shea also won, his first career Hobby Stocks victory. These drivers and more will look to gain points and money with Double Points and $750 to win.

The Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks have the closest 3-way battle with Jason Gamble, the 2009 champion, leading “Mr. Consistency” Jonathan Gillette by 3 and Vaughn Woodall by 5. Gamble, also called “The Pondbird” in the pits, has 3 wins early in the season while Gillette has used consistency to put his 64 in 2nd. Woodall has a couple heat wins in 2011 and a feature win last season, but is still searching for that first feature win in 2011. “The Canuck” Tim Mathieu has put his 14 in 4th, 37 points behind Gamble and has the support of the Canadian fans behind him. Mathieu also won a feature in 2011, but like Woodall is still searching for win #1 of 2011. Asphalt-turned-dirt driver Gordon Cade is 5th, 39 points behind Gamble. Cade has a runner-up finish earlier this season but wants that celebration in victory lane. Chad Scranton, Don Stroshal, Jr., and Ray Wheeler are not running for the championship, but when they show up everyone knows they can get up front in a hurry. Scranton and Stroshal have 2 wins each and Wheeler has 3. Also, Chris Shea has a win early in 2011, but has missed 2 races so far.

When the Gladiators hit the clay you know a battle will break out. Of course, Steve Cox has won 5 of the 7 races in 2011 leaving the battle for 2nd most of the time. Cox has won by dominating, driving from the back, and ‘being in a lucky spot’ as he said last week. Brandon Haseleu has his 3H in 2nd, but is 58 points behind Cox and only 6 ahead of Reid Christensen. Haseleu and Christensen have both come close to victory, but have had something get between them and victory lane. Only 8 behind Christensen is the always-improving Richard Todd. Todd has consistently moved up the grid and now has a few top 5s. Victory lane is his next goal, but Jerry Taylor will try to make up the 22 points to Todd this week-end. Jonathan Green and Scott Sullivan have both put the 28 car in victory lane and Casey Feaster has won 3 times, but all before the scoring started.

In 2 races, 10 different drivers have finished in the top 5 which shows the diversity in the Florida Mini Sprints Association. David Pleaugh and Gavin Thomas have both won in 2011 while Justin Kolves and Eddie Moss have runner-up finishes. Anybody can win in the FMSA, and they will all aim for a trip to victory lane and some points in the FMSA, “The best kept secret in Florida.”

Gates open at 4:30 with racing scheduled for 7 this Saturday night. There is a practice session this Friday, July 22, from 6:00-10:30. For more information you can check out www.bubbaracewaypark.com or call the Speedway hotline

Twice Is Nice At Bubba Raceway Park

By Jimmy Rouse- Bubba Raceway Park Media

On this night, the Top Gun Sprint Cars made their debut at Bubba Raceway Park this season, the RaceCar Engineering Late Models ran 2 features, the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks put another great show on, and the Gladiators gave the fans their money’s worth.

The Late Models went out first and Mark Whitener showed the field why he’s “The Magic Man” and the defending RaceCar Engineering Late Models champion. “The Magic Man” took the lead at the start (more…)

Excitement builds for reopening of Bronson Speedway on July 30th

By John Berti, Karnac.com Senior News Editor

The long anticipated reopening of Bronson Speedway becomes reality on Saturday, July 30, 2011.

It’s been tedious process to get the track back up and running what with months of preparation work that went into the facility itself and the lengthy list of red tape that the county demands, but finally it is all behind track owners Chris and Ann Young.

Bronson Speedway is a three eighths mile, asphalt high-banked oval track located on State Road 24 in Bronson, FL.

Many drivers, crews and fans attended test and tunes at the speedway in recent weeks and all left with positive feelings about the track, overall facility, track officials, and the new management.

The opening night race card will feature the Open-wheel Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Sportsman, Hornets and INEX Legends,

Rules for each of the divisions are posted on the Bronson Speedway Facebook page. For any other information about Bronson Speedway call 352-486-4998 which is the official track phone number.

Moff and Harper split the wins in Punta Gorda Open Wheel twin 35s

From Linda Jericka

Got to love the rainy season if your a track owner in Florida and it’s Saturday night. Hot and sunny in the morning, clouds start rolling in by noon, dedicated drivers and staff start showing up at the track, is it going to rain or not. Still no rain but down pours everywhere and your loyal fans start to pull into the parking lot wondering if they will get their weekly racing fix and the owner has to make a call to open up and take a chance. Those drivers that made the decision to race, put on a great show for those fans that rolled the dice and came out and got to see some great side by side bumper to bumper racing action. Never give up on PGS on Saturday night, the owner and staff do what they can to make sure you can see some of the best racing action every Saturday night.

Q Auto Injury and Power FX Open Wheel modifieds had two 35 lap featured events planned for the night. With the field set and Eric Rudd of Naples on the pole it took Steve Arnold five laps to make a move for the lead on Rudd which cause Rudd to spin and sending Arnold to the tale. Rudd had his hands full with Doug Moff now sitting outside him on the restart and Moff jumped into the lead. Arnold was making his way up through the field while Shawn Harper was trying to get by Rudd for the second spot and made contact with Rudd sending him around and Harper to the rear. Those would be the only two cautions of the race so it was hard to chase down Moff who was leading the race and went on to win with Arnold finishing second and Rudd held onto third. In the interview, Moff thanked Steve Arnold for the motor he had borrowed to be able to race, with out it, Moff would have been watching from the grandstands.

Pro 4 saw a caution free race, which means you really have to race hard for a top three finishing spot. They all gave it their all as the 04 of Ryan Collver led the entire race but not with out a hard fought challenge by Cody Allen of Lehigh and Dylan Bigley of Naples. At the stripe it was Collver that would cross first and Allen along side him for second and Bigley third.

T.Q. Midgets came out for twenty five laps that saw the thirty of Mike Belusar leading until a caution came out for him stopped on the track in turn three. After deciding that Belusar would start in the rear the restart of the race was questioned as all drivers and classes know the track has a spot on the track that the flagman watches closely to start every race at and drivers know when to fire. The flagman watched the spot closely, through the green, and the track’s finishing order was the 30 of Mike Belusar first, Chris Gimmler second and Geoff Styner was third.

If you have not seen a Champ kart race, they will be back Sept 17th, and you do not want to miss it. Nineteen Champ Karts ran for twenty five laps of drafting like you have never seen before, and when it was all over the winner was the 44 of Tara Henderson. Chris Henderson would come in second and Chase Fitzgerald was third.

Road Warriors came out next and on the first caution of the race Chris Scott got sent to the back for spinning the 33 of Chris Loney on lap eight. Did Loney think he got spun by the five of Jeremy Daring, cause on the restart the 33 plowed into the five sending him on a flat and Loney to the rear. Loney stopped at the flag stand to discus the situation with the flagman who ended up sending him to the pits for the night. Kile would hold onto the lead by holding off Shane Leonard who came in second and Jason Miller charged up for a third place finish.

You ask, what is a Cowboy Cadillac, well it is everyone’s favorite and most entertaining class at the speedway and Saturday night was a race you should have been there to see in person. As Andy Vanscyoc, winner of the last three in a row races said, “the glass slipper fell off and the handling went away.” The drivers of the class were out this week to steal the glass slipper or bang it off as there was so much side by side, beating and banging and three wide racing going on in the twenty five lap feature. It was anyone’ss race and the 8 truck of Jeff Debble who was scored as the leader for twenty two laps as returning Jeff Dellea in the 77 took the lead with two to go. Side by side bumper to bumper, two laps to go Dellea slips up the track and Robert Willms takes over the lead with Deeble right behind him sending Dellea to the third spot. That is how the race would finish with Robert Willms back in the winners circle and July 30th they will be back for racing action you do not want to miss.

Open Wheel Modifieds came out for their second feature of the night and fast qualifier Shawn Harper from Lake Wales in the 00 was sitting on the pole. The drivers had some minor handling repairs to do after the first race and you could tell by the almost caution free race. Harper ran start to finish in the lead with Steve Arnold second while Moff was trying to get around the 76 of James Wilkens Jr. who hauls all the way from Fort Pierce Fl. On the restart of the only caution Moff was able to get by Wilkens and challenge Arnold for the second spot. Three laps to go, Harper still with a nice lead, Moff was able to get by Steve Arnold and bring it home in second and Arnold third.

The last race of the night was the Fab 4 class were Karl Garrard started on the pole and looked to be the winner as he led for sixteen of the twenty lap feature. JRC Jess as she likes to be called, driving her pink number 91 rocket had other plans as she put the moves on Garrard with three laps to go, taking the rocket to the outside and taking over the lead. Paul Richards Jr back with a new car and motor had plans of his own and came up short at the finish line coming in second with a good run from the back of the field and Garrard would settle for third.

Next weeks racing action will be

July 23- Pro Trucks, Rookie Trucks, Mini Stocks, Pro4, Fab4, Legends 30 Lap, Bandolero
