LATE MODELS SPICE UP THE ACTION THIS WEEK AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

There will once again be action aplenty Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway as the Late Models return for 100 laps and a $3,000 winners check. The Mini Cups will also be in action along with the Modified Mini Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Mini Stocks, Kids Club and Bandoleros.

The Late Model class has enjoyed a huge resurgance in 2010 as the track has stepped up to the plate to attract cars with a bigger purse and rules that allow practically any type of Late Model machine to be competitive. Just under 50 different Late Model race teams have signed in to compete in the last three events. All of those teams, plus those who ran in the FAST Series event earlier in the year will be eligible for the “bonus” purse paying $5,000 to win (and a nice $4,000 for second) in the last Late Model point race of the year on October 16th. Winged Sprints and Mod Mania at VSP This Saturday

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- A very busy Saturday night of racing is in store for Volusia Speedway Park this week as full throttle winged sprint car action will be on tap with the Top Gun Sprint Car Series, and the Florida Mini Sprint Association.  In addition to the excitement of the sprint cars, fans will also get to see full blown Modified Mania from the Budweiser Modifieds, plus more fender banging thrills from the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks.

The Top Gun Sprint Car Series features the top 360 sprinters in the region battling for the 2010 points championship in a two night event that will begin on Friday at Ocala Speedway and continue on Saturday at Volusia Speedway Park.  The double race weekend puts an added need to perform on racers like Ryan Partin, who currently tops the Top Gun points standings, as they have to survive Ocala’s tricky 3/8ths mile layout and travel just over 50 miles east to VSP in order to do it all again the following day on the big half mile speedway.  Partin’s lead is a mere two points over Tim George, so look for the two night stand this weekend to either lead to changes at the top of the heap, or to reaffirm Partin’s superiority.

The Florida Mini Sprint Association touts itself as “Florida’s best kept secret” and yet by providing exciting high speed action at every track that they visit they certainly are not shy about making their secret stay a secret.  Brett O’Donnell is at the top of the 2010 points heap and looking to stay there, but Eddie Moss Jr, and his daughter Rhea Lynn Moss, are both in hot pursuit.  The previous visits to Volusia Speedway Park this season have resulted in flips, thrills, and close finishes, so look for more of the same this Saturday night.

Back on June 5th the scheduled Budweiser Modified Mania ended up rained out by a sudden deluge, so this Saturday night will make up the $1200 to win event and give race fans something extra to cheer about.  Jamie Carter still hangs onto the points lead despite Jeff Mathews closing the gap a little after last Saturday’s win, and no doubt that with the extra large check in the balance along with a possible championship, things will be extra exciting when the green flag waves this time around.

And the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks will be back in action this week after a weekend that saw a disqualification of the #27 car of Chad Scranton, then saw that DQ rescinded on Monday after further review of the findings, giving Scranton his decisive win back.  Scott Mooers remains one of the top racers in his class in the nation, currently ranked in second place in the UMP DIRTcar national rankings while he holds a comfortable lead in the 2010 points standings at VSP.  But Luke Sadler and Chad Scranton, are not impressed and are consistently outrunning Mooers at this point in the season, leading Mooers to comment in an online post that he seriously needs to step his game up.

Volusia Speedway Park will open the pit gate at 4PM this Saturday, with fans admitted to the grandstand area at 5:30PM.  Racing gets underway at 7:30PM, and for info on prices, or to see the entire 2010 racing schedule, visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net.

Winged Madness Invades Ocala Speedway this Friday

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA,FL-  This Friday, July 16th, will bring alcohol fueled, high horsepower, full winged action, to the historic Ocala Speedway, as the Top Gun Sprint Car Series returns to Florida’s toughest 3/8ths mile.  And if that is not enough winged madness for the fans, the Florida Mini Sprint Association will be on hand with a swarm of screaming winged minis flying around Ocala’s tricky layout.  Some of Ocala’s own racers will be hitting the clay as well, as the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks return to action, and the Gladiator Division points battle heats up even more.

The Top Gun Sprint Car Series has brought the best of the region’s 360 sprinters to Ocala Speedway earlier in 2010 as  16 year old Amanda Ferguson spanked the field and grabbed a convincing first win on dirt at the region’s toughest racetrack.  But according to Amanda’s website, she has opted to climb into a super late model this weekend and will not defend her win at Florida’s oldest speedway, thus opening the door for someone else to overcome the competition and Ocala’s odd layout.  But while Ferguson will not be back, Rich Pratt will be racing at Ocala this time after missing the earlier event this season.  Meanwhile Ryan Partin has taken control of the Top Gun Sprints points battle and leads Tim George by a mere two point margin, and with the survivors from Ocala venturing eastward through the forest and racing on Saturday night as well, this could be a make or break weekend for several competitors.

The Florida Mini Sprints have had an even longer absence from Ocala, last challenging the tough 3/8ths mile during Ocala Speedway’s Winternational schedule at the end of January.  Since then the FMSA has raced everywhere but Ocala, and is jumping at the chance to return to one of their favorite and most challenging circuits.  Brett O’Donnell holds the current points lead and has established himself as the man to beat as Eddie Moss Jr. gives chase.  But Ocala fans will be pleasantly surprised to find that Rhea Lynn Moss has matured since those first awkward races in January, and is now third in the 2010 points battle and a force to contend with.

The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stock points race is still dominated by two racers as points leader Dean Jarvis, and second place contender Heath Walker, bring their battle back to Ocala Speedway for the first time since June 25th.  But five racers are within striking distance of the top two, with Gainesville’s William Edwards lurking only 37 points behind Walker while Walker trails Jarvis by 12.  Meanwhile, “The Outlaw” Jody Wells reigned supreme at Ocala the last time out, and will have his 11 machine ready to defend his win this Friday night.

And a lot of questions will be answered on Friday night as Ocala’s closely contested Gladiator Division hits the clay, such as can Steven Johnson continue to hang on to first place, or can Matt Shea win two in a row?  How about, can Casey Feaster show up on time, not be relegated to the rear to start the feature, and therefore chase down Steven Johnson?  Johnson’s points lead jumped to 14 over Feaster after last Friday’s frantic night that saw Feaster doing a lot of chasing, catching, but failing to pass the front two cars.  And meanwhile Lasoski Racing’s Devin Walker remains just 5 points behind Feaster in third place, so Feaster might want to do some “mirror driving” even though his car has none.

Ocala Speedway will open the grandstand gates for the winged sprint Special Event at 5PM this Friday, with racing action beginning with heats at 8PM.   For information on Special Event prices, or to see more info on upcoming events, be sure to visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

14 Year Old Racer Sean Shalvoy to Give Legends Million 1st Place Prize to Charity

Shalvoy to donate Primary Sponsorship to Racing 2 Cure for Event
Concord, NC — At just 14-years old Sean Shalvoy has won 20 of 25 races entered in Legends Car racing this year. Prior to Legends cars he won in Bandolero cars, Motocross and holds 3-National BMX bike Championships.  On July 15-17 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina Sean Shalvoy will go after the most valued win of his racing career.  U.S. Lengend Cars will host a race that boasts a One Million dollar purse, with first place taking home $250,000.

A typical payout in Legends Cars is from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.  The young racers record of wins, dedication to racing and tremendous focus make him a top choice to take home the big money prize.  But it’s his choice to give up the winning prize that is most remarkable.

It’s money that could go towards his future racing career or a college fund.  It certainly could buy a 14-year old boy all those cool things he’s always wanted.  But he insists that it would be better spent going to Racing 2 Cure, an organization that helps families in need that are going through cancer and children who have lost a parent to cancer.

“It’s a lot of money for sure,” said the young racer from Mooresville, North Carolina.  But I can’t think of a better place for the money to go and anything more motivating for me to win.  I’m excited about this race and I think we have a real shot at it.  I could think of all the things I could do with the money.  But for me, racing isn’t about the money.  It’s about winning.  If I win that will be enough.  If I can help kids and families through my racing then that just makes what I do all for a reason beyond myself.”

Shalvoy is no stranger to cancer.  In 2004 his Mom [Megan] battled breast cancer twice and is now in remission.  Sean also initiated a fund-raiser at school for a classmate who was battling Leukemia.  The Shalvoy family met the founders of Racing 2 Cure, the Stewart family, and immediately the families were on common ground.  After hearing their story Sean wanted to take action and made the bold decision to donate the primary sponsorship and the potential of a large first place prize for the Legends Million race.

“I know what it’s like to worry about losing your mom.  I know how Hunter [Stewart] and his family feel having to go through the cancer battle for the second time,” said Shalvoy.  “I hope we can win this race and really make a difference for some kids and families who aren’t as lucky as my family.”

Keep watch on Sean Shalvoy who will be piloting the #89 Racing 2 Cure Legends Car.  Sponsors: Wayne Patrick Holdings, Piedmont Bank and Mrs. Bubbles Car Wash have all graciously accepted an associate placement to make room on the race car for Racing 2 Cure.  The Legends Million race takes place Thursday July 15th – Saturday July 17th.  Tickets and further information can be found at www.CharlotteMotorSpeedway.com.

About Racing 2 Cure (R2C): Racing 2 Cure began as a simple act of then 7-year old Hunter Stewart.  Hunter was starting his off-road racing career when he received troubling news just a few weeks before his first ever race.  His Mom at just 34 years old was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  In order to maintain a positive focus, the family decided to continue Hunter’s racing.  Inspired to take action Hunter began to donate a portion of his allowance for every race lap he completed.  He also re-designed his race truck to carry the Susan G. Komen for the Cure logo.  This one-race effort inspired others to take action.  Hunter’s story was largely covered by the media and recognized by public officials, including a guest appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.  The Stewart family formalized Racing 2 Cure into a 501c3 Non-Profit organization registered in the State of North Carolina.  R2C raises funding to provide for families in need who are fighting cancer, children who have lost a parent to cancer and children battling cancer.  In addition funds support Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.

TRUCKS, OUTLAW MODS & CHAMP KARTS HIGHLIGHT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY SATURDAY PROGRAM

by Dave Westerman

After a week off for the July 4th Independence Day holiday weekend, Auburndale Speedway returns to action Saturday night with nine classes of racing set to do battle.

The Auburndale Trucks return to racing along with the Sportsman cars, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Legend Cars, V-8 Bombers and Bandoleros. Joining the track’s regular classes will be a pair of traveling groups, the Outlaw Modifieds and the Southeast Champ Kart Series.

The Trucks make their fourth appearance of the year as their field continues to grow. Jim Cowhey, Jr. and Tommy King are tied for the point lead headed into action this week while just ten points separate the lead duo from Roger Blevins, Tim Sozio and Keith Lilley who are third through fifth in the standings.

Dave Dunkin padded his Sportsman point lead just a bit two weeks ago with another win but Mark Medeiros is still within striking distance just 22 markers behind Dunkin. Austin Carr has dropped well behind the front pair but still sits third in Sportsman points despite missing the last two races.

The Street Stock point battle continues to see-saw back and forth between current leader Matt McCrary and Jeff Waterman. McCrary holds a slim six point edge over Waterman while third place Dave Colpritt trails by 62 tallies.

Chris Spring has opened up a 32 point edge over Fred Harrison, Jr. in the Mini Stock point standings and it will be these two who will ultimately decide the season championship. Meanwhile, Josh Borem all but has the V-8 Bomber title wrapped up already, currently leading the standings by a whopping 160 points over Buddy Phillips, Jr.

Things have gotten very interesting in the Legend Car class as Jake Perkins has caught Gerald White, Jr. and the two are now tied for the point lead in this very competitive division. Defending Legend Car champion Justin Brown sits 38 points behind the two front-runners.

The Outlaw Modifieds have been inactive for awhile thanks to weather-related issues, but make their second appearance of the year at Auburndale Speedway this week. Tom Meyer of Pinellas Park leads the Outlaw Modified points and has three wins on the season already. Steady Ric Mills trails Meyer by 18 in the point chase while the winner here back on May 1st, Doug Hopper, is third in points followed by Craig Sherar and Mike Endee.

The Southeast Champ Kart Series (SECKS) are set for their third run of the year at Auburndale. Phil Harp was the most recent winner here while Dennis Mace copped the win at the most recent SECKS show held at Citrus County Speedway.

Saturday, pit gates open at 2PM, grandstand gates open at 5PM and racing begins at 7PM. For more information just log on to www.auburndaleracing.com powered by Palm Tree Computers.
