Action and Drama Highlight Monster Energy Night at VSP

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE,FL- Race fans had to know up front that they would get plenty of excitement and entertainment when they saw the Daytona Dodge-Chrysler Late Models and Budweiser Modifieds were running on the same Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park.  But they quickly discovered that the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers, all create their own special brand of excitement as well, as Monster Energy Drink Night cranked up the action at the south’s fastest half mile.

The Budweiser Modifieds saw “Big Mac” Charlie MacNichol fall by the wayside early during heat racing, while Jeff Mathews firmly planted himself in the front row for the feature event, just outside of pole sitter Traver Boettcher.  And as soon as the green waved the “Repo Man” shot the 33 car into the lead and remained there despite a valiant effort by Jimmie and Jamie Carter to get past him.  Jamie Carter had started in the 7th position and worked his way to second when some late race cautions bunched up the field and gave him a few good shots at Mathews.  Carter could get his car alongside of the 33, but Mathews proved a tad too tough to tame.  Jeff Mathews scored the win while Jamie Carter was a close second and Jimmie Carter rounded out the top three.  Rob Underwood managed to finish in the fourth spot while James Smith got a top 5 finish as well.

Miss VSP 2010 Emily Chaney did the honors of waving the green for the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks and the second feature race of the night.  Billy Medders led the field to the green flag but Mike Tovet seized early control of the race and fought to hold off a three wide challenge on the backstretch.  That challenge failed to sort itself out in turns 3 and 4, and the resulting contact brought a caution and sent Pat Buckley to the pits on a hook.  Tovet would later develop problems and eventually leave the race as well a few laps later.  As Tovet faltered, Trevor Gamble took advantage and grabbed the lead, refusing to relinquish it until he saw the checkers waving. Phillip Brown gave chase, then late in the race had to fend off a hard charging Bubba Christian who suddenly barreled into the top three.

While Trevor Gamble finished first and Bubba Christian crossed the line in third place, drama in the pit area after the race scrambled the top five standings as disqualifications were ordered for conduct issues.  Phillip Brown, who had begun the race in the 10th position, was declared the winner, which amounted to a 9 position gain on the night. Tim Hughes moved up two positions to second place as Gamble and Christian were ousted.  Billy Medders claimed the third spot followed by David Higgs and Mike Tovet.

Race fans know that when the 21 car of Ivedent Lloyd drives onto the race track that “The Professor” will likely entertain them while he educates everyone else, and as one might expect, the rest of the Daytona Dodge-Chrysler Late Model field was in no mood to sit through class.  Lloyd rocketed his car into the lead and began a lesson in domination that lasted for 25 laps, while his teammate, Darrell Padgett schooled the field in passing by gaining 15 positions to finish second behind Ivedent Lloyd.

David Clegg had a respectable night despite Lloyd and Padgett’s attention getting performances.  Clegg ignored all of the hoopla, drove his own race, and finished third on the night, followed by Dillon Wood who was racing “incognito” Saturday night behind the wheel of the 7 car.  Richard Ferry also got a top five finish after starting on the pole, crossing the line behind Wood.

Shawn “Beavis” Kosier  had won three 4 Cylinder Challenger races in a row coming into Saturday night, and once again he would find his way to some hardware and an interview with Joe Dirt, but not for winning the race.  Steven Cox managed to get around Kosier on lap 4 and remain there, breaking the win streak for the 97 car at three.  And while Cox celebrated in Victory Lane, Kosier was happy as well, satisfied with second place if the win was out of reach.  Cox’s 88 machine looked untouchable after it passed Kosier cleanly, then held off every challenge with ease.

RJ Glaser grabbed the third spot after harassing Kosier for the second spot for most of the race, while Gilbert Espy finished in the fourth spot.  And the big mover and shaker of the night was Casey Feaster, who earned a DQ for his heat race when he was busted for speeding in the pit area, and had to start the feature race on the tail.  Feaster worked his way forward 14 positions for the fifth place finish, while Robert Graham gained 12 spots in an 8th place effort.

The Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks have created their own brand of drama the last few outings both on and off of the race track, and Saturday night was no different.  The result of it all was a highly competitive race where the top positions were almost always in dispute, plus enough beating and banging action that the competition clock expired before the scheduled 20 laps were completed.

Jumpin’ Jim Shaw battled for the early lead with Jim Goempel and Chad Scranton until a tangle in turn 3 sent Goempel to the pits.  Meanwhile Matt Schell and David Whitt were on the move, muscling their way through traffic to enter the fray up front and contend with Shaw for the win.  Whitt assumed the lead and held it despite the best efforts of Matt Schell, and Jim Shaw overcame a lap 6 tangle to return to the top three.  Other racers were making moves further back in the pack as well, as AJ McKay climbed from the last starting position to 13th, and John Thorpe gained 7 spots to 9th.

David Whitt proved to be a little too much for Matt Schell, grabbing a victory while Schell settled for second place.  Jumpin’ Jim Shaw was the third place finisher, while Scott Mooers claimed the fourth spot and Chad Scranton placed fifth.

Saturday, April 17th brings Fastline 5 racing to Volusia Speedway Park as the Daytona Dodge-Chrysler Late models, Taylor Racing Products Sportsman,  Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks, and 4 Cylinder Challengers, battle on the south’s fastest half mile.  Racing begins at 7:30PM and fans can access www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net for additional information.

Easter Weekend Brings Action At Volusia Speedway Park

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- A nearly perfect night for racing greeted a holiday weekend crowd at the fastest half mile in the southeast, as five racing divisions went for the checkers and throng of happy kids rifled through a mountain of hay for Easter eggs filled with prizes.  Add an official visit from the Easter Bunny himself, plus a hard fought marshmallow Peeps eating contest on the front stretch, and it all added up to an exciting and fun Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park.  Challenger racer Davey Wolf washed down 13 pink Peeps with soda in 45 seconds to take top honors, while most other contenders littered the front stretch with Peep debris.

The Budweiser Open Wheel Modified Division opened the feature racing schedule with Rob Underwood at the point, but almost as soon as the flag green waved Jeff Matthews leapt from his fourth place starting position to challenge for the lead.  But on lap 3 the third place car of Trevor Boettcher lost control and smacked hard into the inside front stretch barrier, bringing out a caution.  Boettcher walked away from the violent hit, but his race car was finished.

Jeff Matthews used the restart to overtake Rob Underwood for the lead and immediately began putting real estate between himself and the rest of the field, but developed issues as the caution waved for Matthew Perrimann when his engine expired and he contacted the outside wall in turn one.  Matthews would sneak off of the track on the backstretch under caution leaving the lead to Rob Underwood once again.

Underwood would hold that lead until Jamie Carter took it away on lap 11, then later Underwood would spin out on lap 17 while running second, taking him out of contention for a win.  Carter would hold his lead despite challenges from Chip Owen in the final laps and get the winner’s trophy, followed by Chip Owen for second place and James Smith for third.  Rob Underwood recovered quickly enough to place fourth and Kyle Owen rounded out the top five.

After a weekend off the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks hit the clay for a 20 lap feature race with Cory Hupp on the pole.  But Phillip Brown stepped up to lead the first lap, then was quickly passed by Trevor Gamble who began to immediately stretch his lead.  Brown hung onto the second spot as Bubba Christian and others argued over the third position.

A caution on lap 10 bunched the leaders up for the restart, but no one was able to outpace Trevor Gamble as the green waved again.  And again after a multi car incident in turns three and four, Gamble handled the restart well and remained out front.  Trevor Gamble collected the win, followed by Phillip Brown and Bubba Christian for second and third.  Greg Vandergriff and Mike Eubanks claimed the fourth and fifth finishing positions.

Twenty-two racers took the green behind pole sitter Drew Smith in the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman feature race, and no sooner than things got underway then trouble erupted.  Marc Kinley and Dan Lane ended up in a wad against the front stretch wall, ending their race night and causing the first of a string of cautions that kept the field tightly bunched through most of the race.  Those cautions also spelled trouble for some top five runners like Aaron Barsness and David Clegg, who were either involved in the incidents or were sent to the rear of the field.

Through restarts and moves for position during racing, Shaun Daugharty maneuvered himself into position to challenge for the lead while Steve Shead and Matt McGillivray moved into top five spots.  Daugharty grabbed the lead on lap 16 and never looked back, forcing a disappointed Drew Smith to settle for the second spot.  Smith was followed by Steve Shead who grabbed the third spot, while Matt McGillivray and Shane Nichols passed under the checkers in the fourth and fifth positions.

So far in 2010 Shawn “Beavis” Kosier has taken home all of the first place hardware, so none of the other 20 racers were thrilled with seeing the yellow number 97 lead the field to the green as the 4 Cylinder Challengers began their 15 lap feature.  And try as they did, none seemed to be able to outrun Kosier either, as he cruised to his third win in a row.

But Kosier never walked away from the field.  A host of various contenders lined up behind him, but fell victim to either mistakes of mechanical issues, leaving Kosier in front.  In the end RJ Glasier raced hard to come from 9th position to finish second, as Casey Feaster fought his way through traffic from a 15th starting position to the third place trophy.  James Sullivan started in the 18th spot but managed to grab a fourth place finish, and Robert Graham came from 12th to wind up fifth on the night.
Luke Sadler had the pole position and looked strong in the early laps of the Amsoil Thunder Stock Division feature, but just short of halfway through the race his engine erupted on the front stretch, handing the lead over to Scott Mooers.  Meanwhile Randy Strehle was focused on finding his way to the leaders, as a weight issue after the earlier heat races had placed his car at the rear of the 17 car field at the start.  Strehle made his way forward and wound up side by side with Mooers on lap 12, eventually wrestling the lead away two laps later.

From that point Strehle managed to stay in front of a determined Scott Mooers and passed under the checkers first, but was challenged in post race tech after his celebration in Victory Lane.  Randy Strehle refused the post race tear down of his engine as required by the challenge and therefore was disqualified, which made Scott Mooers the race winner.  Jim Nichols moved up to the second place finish while Jumpin’ Jim Shaw claimed the third spot.  John Thorpe ended a good night in fourth place and Jim Goempel came home fifth.

Racing returns to Volusia Speedway Park on April 10th for Monster Energy Drink Night, featuring action from the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models, Budweiser Modifieds, Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, Amsoil Thunder Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers.  For more information, be sure to visit the official home of the southeast’s fastest half mile online, at www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.com.

Emily Chaney wins Ms VSP, Lloyd tops Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Models at Volusia Speedway Park

VSP MEDIA

Barberville, FL  (March 27, 2010)  Another perfect spring night greeted fans and drivers at Volusia Speedway Park.  Not too cold nor too hot, just right.

Emily Chaney won the Ms Volusia Speedway Park contest and quickly began her duties Saturday night as she handed out the winning trophys and feature winner hats to the winners and posed with the winning driver.    April Gray won first runner up.

Winning the heat races on Saturday night were Jason Davis and Ivedent Lloyd in the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Model Division.  The Taylor Racing Products Sportsman class saw Sammy Ashley and Steve Shead win their two heat races.  The Amsoil Thunder Stocks had three heat races with David Whitt,  Chad Scranton and Scott Mooers taking the wins.    The 4 Cylinder Challenger class also had three heats with Shawn Kosier, RJ Glaser and Thomas Parker taking their heat wins.

Twenty three Amsoil Thunder Stocks signed in the pit gate to race but after the heat races, only eighteen ran the feature.  Randy Strehle had the pole for the 20 lap feature with Luke Sadler on the outside pole.    Strehle took the early lead but it was Scott Mooers who took over on lap 3 and never looked back.   With only a few cautions to stop the action, Mooers sailed to the checkered followed by Randy Strehle, David Whitt, Ryan Lisak, and D.J. Nobles.

In 2009, the Thunder Stock class was new to Volusia Speedway Park and has grown weekly every since then which was shown Saturday night in the very nice car count brought in by the Thunder Stocks.    Watch this class as it continues to grow and grow.

The Florida Mini Sprints made their first appearance of 2010 at Volusia Saturday night with 20 sprints.   Jesse Teed took the early lead but it was Brett O’Donnell, the 2009 Rookie of the Year, that showed he had the right stuff Saturday night.  O’Donnell took over the point and there was no catching him although Teed tried very hard.  O’Donnell took the checkered followed by Jesse Teed, Chris Pacetti, Steve Crabtree, and Eddie Moss, Jr.

Thirteen Late Models took the green with Joe Kump on the pole and last week’s winner David Clegg on the outside pole.   Clegg took the lead and kept it until lap 17 when Ivedent Lloyd took over.  Lap 15 saw the caution come out for debris on the track which turned out to be the front wheel cover off of Clegg’s car.
On the restart, Clegg was able to take the point but Lloyd was hot on his heels as Clegg’s car began having handling problems.  Lloyd took advantage and took over the point and began sailing away from the field.  Lloyd took the win for his first feature win of the year at Volusia Speedway followed by David Clegg, Joe Kump, Donnie Chappell, and Bo Allen.

Nineteen Sportsman took the green for the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman feature.  Dan Lane, Sr. had the pole with last week’s winner Aaron Barsness on the outside pole.   Barsness quickly jumped to the point followed by Lane, Shaun Daugharty, Drew Smith and Steve Shead.  As Barsness begins to build up the distance between him and second place, the caution comes out on lap 7 for Blaise Hetznecker and Bruce Birkitt.   Two more cautions before the race sees halfway involving Karl Haas and Collin Wright and Alan Peacock and Paul Shead.  This was Peacock’s first night back at Volusia after being wrecked at North Florida Speedway before opening night.

On the restart, Barsness and Shead go side-by-side for the point as Shead takes the lead this time.  A few more lead changes follow but Shead holds on and  takes his first win of the season followed by Aaron Barsness, Drew Smith, Shaun Daugharty and Corey Holley.

Joining the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman for the first time and his first race in a dirt car was Jimmy Norman who previously ran Legend cars at Orlando SpeedWorld and other tracks.  Norman said he will be racing the rest of the year at Volusia in his #2 Sportsman.

The final race of the night saw 25 4 Cylinder Challengers take the green with Steven Cox on the pole and Steven Johnson on the outside pole.  Debuting his brand new Challenger was Casey Feaster who finished fourth in the feature.   Johnson takes the point on the green followed by Kosier, Epsy, Feaster, and Glaser.  Lap 4 saw the caution come out for Tom Parker who went hard into the turn 4 wall.  Parker was okay but the same cannot be said about his car.

On the restart, Johnson and Kosier go side-by-side for the point with Kosier taking the lead this time.    With no more cautions, it was a fight to the finish but Kosier held on to take the checkered followed by Larry Langston, Tony Laporta, Casey Feaster, and RJ Glaser.

Next Saturday night, April 3rd, it is Easter Fun with a visit from the Easter Bunny and Egg Hunt for the kids.  On the program will be the Budweiser (Quality Brands) Open Wheel Modifieds,  Taylor Racing Products Sportsman,  Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, Amsoil Thunder Stocks and the 4 Cylinder Challengers.

Racing starts at 7:30 pm.

Gamble and Barsness Make It Two In a Row at Volusia Speedway Park

Barberville, FL (March 21, 2010) It was a perfect Saturday evening at Volusia Speedway Park as the second race night of the 2010 season took place. Fans and racers welcomed spring and the warmer temps.

Heat races were run with Jason Davis and Darell Padgett taking the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Late Model wins. Aaron Barsness and Corey Holley take the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman heat wins. The Budweiser (Quality Brands) Modifieds saw Jeff Matthews and Larry Burkins take the heat wins. The Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks saw Mike Eubanks and Trevor Gamble take those heat wins.

Intermission was especially fun for the kids as two basketball goals were towed onto the track for the kids vs. the drivers. Kids participating in Volusia’s March Madness were Cameron Brevveman 10 years old, Dusty Adkins 9 years old, Brandon Sutterfield 9 years old, Samuel Baistow 10 years old, Jacob Inabrett 9 years old, William Inabrett 10 years old, Anthony Troy 10 years old, Olivia Floyd 9 years old, Mia Schell 9 years old, and Jenna Kleinman 9 years old.

For the drivers’ side it was Shaun Daugharty, David Clegg, Jason Davis, Rob Underwood, and Larry Burkins. Two sessions were thrown with the kids beating out the Volusia drivers each time.

Taylor Racing Products Sportsman took to the track for their 20 lap feature with Matt McGillivrary on the pole and Paul Shead on the outside pole. Paul Shead took the early lead but it was a short green as the caution came out on lap 2 for Marc Kinley who had spun in turns 1 and 2. Restart saw Shead on the outside and McGillivray on the inside with Shead taking the point once again over Aaron Barsness, Matt McGillivrary, Cory Holley and Shaun Daugharty.

Multiple cautions occurred throughout this event and in the final laps, the caution comes out again on lap 17 for Holley who has spun in turn 4. With three laps left to go Barsness has the point on the restart followed by Daugharty, Paul Shead, McGillivrary, and Drew Smith. Daugharty puts the heat on Barsness and tries to take over but Barsness quickly shuts the door. Justin Merry spins in turn 4 as the field goes to the checkered with Aaron Barsness taking his third straight win over Shaun Daugharty, Paul Shead, Matt McGillivrary, and Drew Smith.

The Budweiser (Quality Brands) Modifieds saw Wayne Hammond on the pole and Dale Murray on the outside pole. Two attempts at starting this raced resulted in multiple car disturbances in turns 1 and 2.

The third time is the charm with Jamie Carter on the inside and Rob Underwood on the outside to finally start the 20 lap contest. Carter takes the point over Matthews, Underwood, Hammond and Corbin.

Cautions continue to plague the Budweiser Modifieds, and finally Carter builds up a significant lead over Hammond with almost every modified on the track having some kind of damage from the night.Jamie Carter takes the win for his first feature win of 2010 over Wayne Hammond, Jeff Matthews, Rob Underwood and James Smith.

Kevin Durden had the pole for the Daytona Dodge Chyrsler Jeep Late Model feature with David Clegg on the outside pole. The race goes green as Clegg takes the point over Durden, Wood, Davis and Chappell. Dillon Wood finds his way to the front and exchanged places with Clegg several times during this event. In the end experience wins out with the “Sod Father” taking the checkered for his first feature win in 2010 followed by Dillon Wood, Donnie Chappell, Darell Padgett, and Jason Davis.

Last but never least, it is the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks with Tim Hughes on the pole and Jody Wells on the outside pole. The green is out as Hughes takes the point. Gamble puts the heat on Hughes and takes over the point followed by Hughes, Jody Wells, Steve Oldaker, and Mark Maresca.

Gamble builds up a strong advantage over the field as he looks for his second straight win of the season. Gamble is followed by Hughes coasting comfortably in second, while the real action takes place for third, fourth and fifth. Oldaker, Wells, Maresca and Mike Eubanks exchange places several times before Gamble takes the checkered for his second straight win of the 2010 season over Tim Hughes, Steve Oldaker, Jody Wells, and Mark Maresca.

Brady Smith Breaks Into World of Outlaws Late Model Series Victory Lane In Finale Of DIRTcar Nationa

Brady Smith won’t go winless on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series in 2010.

The rising star from Solon Springs, Wis., made sure of that on Saturday night, capturing the national tour’s 50-lap A-Main that closed the 39th annual DIRTcar Nationals by University of Northwestern Ohio at Volusia Speedway Park.

Winless in 2009 during his first season as a WoO LMS regular, Smith broke through with a dominant performance in front of a chilled Sunshine State crowd. He fell to third place early in the distance after starting from the pole position but rallied to pass Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., for the lead on lap 20 and run then run away from the pack.

“It feels great to finally win one these Outlaw races again,” said Smith, whose two previous WoO LMS triumphs came during the 2008 season. “It’s so hard to win these races. I know we’re capable of doing it, but we raced the whole season last year and didn’t get it done, so to be able to do it here at Speedweeks – man, it’s actually harder to win a race down here than it is all season.

“We’re just really thrilled. This gives everyone a boost – me, the crew, the sponsors and definitely my bank account.”

Driving his Team Zero by Bloomquist car with a Vic Hill engine under the hood, Smith crossed the finish line with a winning margin of 2.456 seconds over Earl Pearson of Jacksonville, Fla., in the Bobby Labonte Motorsports MasterSbilt mount. Pearson was unable to challenge Smith following a lap-37 restart, leaving him with a runner-up finish in both WoO LMS events run during the DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH.

Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., registered a hard-earned third-place finish, charging forward from the 28th starting position in the Sweeteners Plus Rocket. Behind the wheel of his backup car after driveline woes sidelined his primary machine during heat action, he gained entry to the A-Main through a provisional spot granted to the highest-ranked non-qualified driver in the DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH points standings.

Opening-night WoO LMS winner Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., who started third, finished fourth in the Rocket Chassis house car – good enough to hand him the DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH Late Model championship for the second consecutive year. Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., completed the top five after starting seventh in the Sheltra Construction Rocket.

Sheppard Rallies To Snare First Career DIRTcar Nationals Big-Block Victory

BARBERVILLE, FL – Feb. 11 – Matt Sheppard picked up where he left off on the 2009 Super DIRTcar Series, authoring a late race charge to score his first victory of the new decade in convincing fashion Thursday night in the 39th Annual Florida DIRTcar Nationals By University of Northwestern Ohio at Volusia Speedway Park.

The winningest DIRTcar Big-Block Modified driver in the Northeast last season added his first career feature win in the Sunshine State, establishing the second-generation standout from Waterloo, N.Y. as an early favorite to capture the overall Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Championship come autumn. What A Charge: Richards Wins World of Outlaws Late Model Series Opener For Fourth Straight Year At Volusia Speedway Park

BARBERVILLE, FL – Feb. 11, 2010 – No one was surprised to see Josh Richards win Thursday night’s 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series season opener at Volusia Speedway Park.

But from the 17th starting spot? Even Richards couldn’t have conjured up a more exciting way to kick off his WoO LMS title defense and capture the national tour’s lidlifter for an unprecedented fourth consecutive year.

“I was not expecting that at all,” Richards said after putting on the most memorable performance of the 39th annual DIRTcar Nationals by University of Northwestern Ohio. “To have a car that good, and to start so far back and be that dominant in a race against these guys — it’s just very rare. It’s an awesome feeling.”

Richards, 21, of Shinnston, W.Va., blasted through the field in the Rocket Chassis house car he drove to victory in last year’s opener, cracking the top five on a lap-15 restart and then sliding by Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., and Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., in succession to reach second on lap 19. He quickly ran down race-long leader Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., and sailed by the homestate driver on lap 27 to assume command for good.

Pearson settled for second place in the Bobby Labonte Motorsports MasterSbilt mount, crossing the finish line 4.320 seconds behind Richards. Brady Smith had his Team Zero by Bloomquist car hot on Pearson’s rear deck in the final laps and finished third, while McCreadie placed fourth in the Sweeteners Plus Rocket and 2007 WoO LMS champion Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., advanced from the 19th starting spot to finish fifth in his Valvoline Rocket.

Richards pocketed $10,675 for what might have been the most spectacular of his 21 career WoO LMS triumphs. He won from the 18th starting spot on Oct. 7, 2008, at Fayetteville (N.C.) Motor Speedway, but that race didn’t come with the extra significance of extending an amazing win streak.

“To win four openers in a row is just really cool,” said Richards, who started from the pole position in 2007 and third in both the 2008 and 2009 opening-night WoO LMS events at the half-mile oval outside Daytona Beach. “There’s always the luck factor involved — and we’ve been very lucky here. But I feel like we earned this one too.

“To come from the back really shows how strong your team is. Matt (Barnes), Jimmy (Frey), Joe (Pilkenton), Ernie (Davis), my dad (Mark Richards), Steve Baker — they all did an awesome job.”

Richards found himself mired deep in the starting field after finishing third in his heat race, but he began the A-Main confident he could climb forward. It didn’t take him long to realize he just might be able to still pull off a victory.

“I drove a little hard in the heat and fell back to third, so I was a little disappointed in myself for that,” said Richards. “But I was like, ‘You know what? Just get out there and race, do what you always do.’ I put the heat out of my head and just started fresh in the feature.

“The way the car felt, after a few laps I knew we were gonna be good,” he continued. “The car was just phenomenal. We started passing cars, but I had no idea what position we were in. Then I looked up (at the scoreboard), saw Brady (Smith) was fifth and he was right there in front of us, and I was like, ‘We’re up there and have a pretty good shot of running top-three.’

“After I got the lead I just tried to stay patient. Those last few laps I just about stopped going around there, and I guess going slower actually made me faster. The car was just phenomenal.”

The drivers Richards vanquished certainly agreed with his assessment.

“(Richards) was extremely good tonight,” said Pearson, who started third but moved up one row after polesitter Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., spun between turns one and two at the initial green flag. “He could roll right through that middle or wherever he needed to go. We were a little bit too tight and had to stay down there on the bottom. I don’t even know where he started, but he blew by me and that’s all I saw of him.”

Smith, meanwhile, stood in awe of Richards’s opening-night superiority but was very satisfied with his outing. He didn’t even qualify for last year’s opener at Volusia, putting him in a points hole for the start of his first campaign as a WoO LMS regular.

“I don’t know what it is about the opener here, but Josh has something figured out,” said Smith, who started sixth. “We got tight and couldn’t run the way he could, but we’re very happy with third. This is a lot better start than last year.”

Four caution flags slowed the event, but there were no serious incidents. After McDowell’s opening-lap spin, the other cautions flew for stopped cars — Jared Landers of Batesville, Ark., on lap 15; Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., on lap 19; and Brad Neat of Dunnville, Ky., on lap 37.

Finishing in positions 6-10 was McDowell, who rallied from the rear after his disappointing miscue; Moyer; 21st-starter Tim Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., who earned the $500 WoO LMS ‘Bonus Bucks’ cash for being the highest-finishing driver who hasn’t won a tour A-Main; Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill.; and WoO LMS rookie Austin Hubbard of Seaford, Del.

A banner field of 68 cars was signed in for the event.

Landers, who won the DIRTcar UMP Modified ‘Gator Championship’ on Monday night, blistered the track in 15.961 seconds during qualifying to earn the Ohlins Shocks Pole Award. It was his first-ever fast-time honor on the WoO LMS.

Heat winners were Moyer, McCreadie, Brady Smith, Babb, McDowell and Pearson. The B-Mains were captured by Francis, Greg Johnson of Bedford, Ind., and Dohm.

The 39th annual DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH continue on Fri., Feb. 12 (a grand finale for DIRTcar UMP Late Models with a $10,000 top prize) and Sat., Feb. 13 (another 50-lap, $10,000-to-win show for the WoO LMS). A full program featuring the Super DIRTcar Series for big-block Modifieds is also on the agenda each evening.
