Shelnut Starts Last and Wins Race #6

After 3 months of no racing at Punta Gorda Speedway, at least mother nature gave a helping hand and spared the track of rain for a couple days so everything could dry out. The drivers, crews and fans where all ready to get back to the sport they love and support, and it showed as fans lined up waiting to get back to racing. After qualifying, were the heat races, it took some time for everyone to get back in the swing of things, drivers were a little aggressive and had fans stay till the last featured checker flew.

First up were the Rookie Trucks, James Dellea III of Port Charlotte, sat on the pole and beat Chad Chastain to the line to lead the race. Chastain had a fast truck and by lap five brought out the first caution as he made contact with Dellea and was sent to the rear. Good hard racing by these Rookies while Dellea continued to lead and it was lap fourteen that Chastain made it by Dellea for one lap then broke, Dellea went on to win his first race in the Rookie class, Corey Bigley second and Travis Miller was third. Drainage Issues Forces Punta Gorda to Cancel

Punta Gorda Speedway has no choice but to cancel the race scheduled for this Saturday Sept 22 due to massive amounts of rainfall in the past two weeks and the obvious problems with the drainage in the front of the property, caused by the new road that was put in. At this time, we do not have the answers to this problem since PGS is not the owner of the property, we have made several attempts in the last two months to get a solution. We were very excited about this weekend and the return of the TBARA, we were told a full field of 24 Sprints were expected with big names such as David Steele, Dude Teate, Rex Hollinger, John Gilbertson and many more.

The infield is flooded also but the track is dry so anyone that would like to come out to practice, we will have a Test n Tune night Friday at 4:00. The pit concession will be open with hot food, also the beer pub will be open. For the inconvenience that this has brought on all of us, it will be $5.00 per person to get into the pits for Test n Tune. A new shipment of tires are also available. PGS does not have enough safe parking this week for the race that was scheduled.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

Punta Gorda Speedway Puts a Big Night in the Books Before the Summer Break

After a few rain outs and a lot of preparation from track owner Kevin Williams to try and get close to a hundred race cars into 80 slabs, it was almost time to start racing.

The front gates opened and the fans came to watch one of the only tracks that had racing due to Daytona weekend. It was Mid Season Championship night were several drivers from the regular classes were awarded big trophy’s for the night before the track closes for the 2month summer break.

With ten classes to be run, it was a features only night and all classes were lined up by a four week average except the super late models that qualified for position.

First up was the rookie trucks that saw a great battle for position by the 00 of Corey Bigley of Naples and Chad Chastain from Alva. Bigley led the first half until Chastain made the move for the lead and led the last half. It would be Chad Chastain to win the feature and the Mid Season title and Corey Bigley second and Justin Bond third. (more…)

Punta Gorda Cancels Races for This Weekend, June 30th

PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- The worst of Tropical Storm Debby has left the  Punta Gorda area, allowing City officials to reopen most streets. High tide  hit the City at about 9:40 a.m. today, and it didn’t cause the same heavy  flooding that had resulted in numerous street closures throughout the last 72  hours. Most streets will remain open unless conditions deteriorate. City officials will be monitoring the streets, especially during high tides and  heavy rain falls.

With that being said, the speedways front parking area is one of  the areas under water, as it sits somewhat lower than the new road that was  put in cutting across the front of the speedway.  As of now, it is unsafe to drive into  the speedways parking lots and it will take more than a day or 2 of no rain at  all to become safe to drive on. The speedway owner will not put the fans or  drivers in an unsafe situation and regrets that this week’s racing for June  30th will have to be cancelled. All races and championship night  will be rescheduled for July 7th .

Punta Gorda Speedway  regrets any inconvenience this has  caused, but it is out of our hands and we will keep rescheduling until we get  this huge championship night of racing in. The Punta Gorda Speedway would like to  thank our drivers, crews and fans for their continued support and look forward  to seeing everyone at our mid-season championship.

Another Great Night of Racing Action at Punta Gorda Speedway

You can always count on Punta Gorda Speedway to do their best to put on a great show of racing action, even when Mother Nature strikes. A shower came through during practice and it looked like the night was a wash, but the drivers were there and ready to race. The track was dried, the fans came out and they were not disappointed as you can always count on great fast and furious racing action from the PGS drivers.

First up for the night was the T.Q, Midgets that saw the 63 of Mike Belusar lead the first twenty laps with cars flying around the track on three wheels behind him. Five to go young Chris Gimmler saw his chance to get by Belusar and took it and brought the 51 machine home in the first place winners circle. Mike Belusar would settle for second while “cowboy” Rob Kohler coming out of three on three wheels would finish third. (more…)
