Campi Returns to Desoto for FUPS Win

Anthony Campi returned to The Florida United Promoters Series Saturday night and put on show as he picked his way through the field using the outside lane. Starting outside the third row after the draw, the outside lane failed to advance at the start. Stephen Nasse took advantage of his P1 starting position and took off to be unchallenged for 71 laps until Campi ran him down. Picking off the competition one by one he took command and was on his way to his first FUPS victory of 2012. The race was caution free until lap 88 when Jonthan Guy and points leader Steve Dorer touched getting into turn one, the both spun and backed in to the wall doing heavy damage to both, Dorer would be finished for the night. Once they restarted it was clear sailing for Campi, Nasse held on for 2nd followed by Jesse Dutilly, Michael Smith & Anthony Sergi rounding out the top five.

Florida State Sprint Car Championship Highlights The Florida State Sprint Car Championship

Jim Rouse, BRP Media (10-8-12)  Ocala, FL – This week we host our last of the 4 majors with our Florida State Sprint Car Championship races. Joining them this Friday will be our Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks (to make-up last weekend), Barfield Law Group Mini Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators. It’s also Fan Appreciation Night this Friday as we have Raceway Brews (Coors Banquet and Pabst), fountain sodas, hotdogs, and popcorn for just a dollar! Don’t miss this great action and Fan Appreciation!

Our Twisted Tea Top Gun Sprint Car drivers will fight for a beautiful ring and some valuable championship points that leader Matt Kurtz would like to have. Kurtz has been dominant and made 2 beautiful last lap passes on some of the best in the business. Chasing driver #92 down is “Flyin” Ryan Partin. Partin, the 2010 champion, may have to go all-out-RoGro to take a win as he has a heavy downforce wing compared to the rest of the pack. AJ Maddox took a win earlier in 2012 and could very easily visit Coors Light Winner’s Circle again if he could buy a break. Tony Agin is in the top 5 as he methodically works his way into relevance every race. (more…)

“Florida Mafia” to Defend Home Turf at 47th Annual Florida Governor’s Cup

With only 40 days left until the 47th annual running of the Florida Governor’s Cup 200, all eyes of the New Smyrna Speedway Super Late Model drivers, also known as “The Florida Mafia”, are staring at the border, eagerly awaiting this year’s challengers. In 2011 it was 15 year old phenom, Michigan driver, Erik Jones who took the challenge and it paid off in a big way. Jones led all 200 laps in a flawless performance against a full field of seasoned drivers leaving racers and race fans alike stunned. It had been a 30 year streak for the “Mafia” reigning supreme and defending their race. The last outsider to do it, in 1981, was fellow Michigan native Mike Eddy.

What is the draw to the Florida Governor’s Cup? It’s quite simple really. Of course there is prize money and a take-home trophy, but the true prize for winning this race is the pride and honor that comes with adding your name to the Al Keller Trophy. Commissioned in 1965 by then Governor Hayden Burns, the trophy commemorates Florida’s most historic race and adorns the names of those that have stood proud as Governor’s Cup Champions. Legendary drivers like Gary Balough, Robert Hamke, Ed Howe, Dick Trickle, Mike Eddy, Dick Anderson, David Rogers and Wayne Anderson are among the 29 that have accomplished the feat. (more…)
