Campi dominates Late Model feature at Desoto

Jake Wilson – The Open Wheel Modifieds, sponsored by J.D. Byrider took to the high banks of Desoto Speedway for Twin 35 lap features. The field was set from an inversion of the heat races starting Travis Roland on the pole alongside Dalton Nelson. A nice stretch of green flag racing came to a halt as the first and second place cars, #10 of Travis Roland and the #0 of Josh Todd would tangle in turns 3 and four. Nick Hernandez in the 37 machine, who has had nothing but bad luck so far this year took advantage of the restarts to work through the field and pick up a huge win. The 03 of Kyle Bookmiller took second while Josh Todd in the 0 recovered to take third.

A great field of 18 Pro Late Models filled the pits Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway for their second 50-lap event of the year, but when all was said and done, Daniel Keene, Jr. had pretty much dominated the evening. Keene, who hails from Weeki Wachee, came out 11th for qualifying and blistered the track with a time of 17.635 seconds, over two-tenths of a second quicker than Jacksonville driver Ray Black, Jr. who ran a 17.849 second lap. Cody Blair of Winter Park was third fastest at 17.880 seconds. Keene drew a six for the inversion placing he and Black in row three for the start while Ricky Anderson and Jarrett Snowden lined up on the front row. Snowden moved out to the early lead only to see Tyler Thomas loop the Tim Russell Driver Development car in turn two during lap three. On the restart, Cody Blair drove by Snowden for the top spot but it was Keene on the charge, taking the lead for good on lap ten. Being in front of everyone else would prove to be advantageous for Keene in this race. Lap 16 produced the second yellow flag as Michael Williams did a solo spin in turn one. A lap after the restart, a multi-car tangle took place in turn four involving Alan Bruns, Tyler Audie and Rich Clouser. Clouser's car was towed to the pits but he would return to the fray a bit later, although eight laps down. Keene continued to set the pace, leading easily. Just as the field took the crossed flags for half-way at lap 25, Blair and Black tangled on the front stretch. David Rogers had nowhere to go and he plowed into Blair's machine as Will Carroll hit Rogers' car from behind. Both Blair and Rogers were done for the night. Black had minimal damage but was sent to the rear of the field for the restart. Carroll's car suffered some front end damage but he checked the car out after the red flag period was over and determined it to be just cosmetic and he continued without pitting.
Auburndale Speedway, located in central Florida, has decided to take their late model racing to the next level. General manager, Rex Guy, has announced that Auburndale Speedway has teamed up with well renowned tech inspector Ricky Brooks. Ricky has been a tech inspector since 2005, and was also involved in racing as a late model driver in recent years. Ricky is widely known for his abilities as the famous Snowball Derby tech man and in the past 5 years has also been the Florida Speedweeks tech inspector at New Smyrna speedway. Ricky’s abilities as a tech man have been challenged by some of the best late model teams in the nation, which over the years has helped him in keeping the most level playing field for all competitors. Ricky’s duties will not only include being the late model tech man, he will also be the race director for the remaining late model races at Auburndale Speedway for the remainder of 2014. The management of the speedway are excited to welcome Ricky Brooks to their facility to further help Florida short track racing in its ability to promote some of the biggest and best late model races in the near future. Auburndale’s first late model event with their new tech/race director will be on June 21st. Ricky would like to invite each and every late model team to come challenge for the top spot in his inaugural event. Please help us all welcome what most racers would agree as the most respected tech man in the state to Auburndale Speedway.
NASCAR Whelan All-American Series competition continues this Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway with the Pro Late Model class back in action for their second 50-lap race of the year.
The Pro Lates will become the first class to have run two 50-lap events this year once the dust settles Saturday evening. The first 50-lapper took place on opening night back in March and it was a wild one that saw former Little
New Smyrna Speedway Quarter Midget racer Tyler Audie of Orlando score an upset victory, his first in the class. Since then, Cody Blair of Winter Park and Port Orange driver Michael Lira have posted 25-lap race wins. This trio will
be on hand this week along with several other top names like Daniel Miller, Alan Bruns, Colby Clements, Ricky Anderson and Zach Jarrell. Also in the field will be Michael Williams who will be down from his U. S. Army duty station in Richmond Hill, GA to pilot a Pro Late for just the second time. Williams hopes to get in a few more races before being shipped overseas later this Summer.
Also on the card running 25-lap events will be the E-Modifieds, Mini Stocks and Super Stocks while the Strictly Stocks will go for 20 laps.
The Tampa Bay Area Racing Association Sprint Cars made their first appearance of the year Saturday night with Scotty Adema of Ft. Myers holding off a hard-charging Sport Allen to take the victory at what he describes as his
favorite race track. Twenty-one Sprint Car teams made the tow to the high-banked half mile with 19 cars still around for a trio of heat races after both Matt Alfonso and Mickey Kempgens had trouble during hot laps and parked their machines for the night. Heat race victories would go to Ben Fritz, Dude Teate, and Brian Gingras setting the stage for the 30-lap nightcap. One driver who had a rough go was "Flyin" Ryan Partin who had the brakes fail on his mount going into turn three during the second heat race. Partin hit the outer wall virtually head on, then, with no way of stopping the car, slid back down the track and crashed hard into the inside railing. Even though the car was shortened up a good two feet, Partin climbed out unharmed. Partin was racing a second Sprinter for eventual feature winner Adema who got to experience both the highs and lows of being a race car owner on this night. Dave Retzlaf and Larry J. Brazil, Jr. brought the field down for the start of the feature with Retzlaf leading the opening lap. Adema, who started sixth, was on a roll right from the get-go and took the lead during the second lap bringing Fritz with him by Retzlaf.
