BOBBY BLAKE ZIPS TO MODIFIED WIN ON OPENING NIGHT AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Auburndale, FL (February 23, 2010)  There was a bit of a chill in the air but plenty of red-hot racing to keep a great crowd of race fans on the edge of their seats as Auburndale Speedway kicked off the 2010 racing season Saturday night.

Fifteen Open-Wheel Modifieds signed in to do battle with heat winners Keith Lilley and Von Pope leading the field to green for their first 40 lap contest of the year.

Lilley grabbed the early advantage with Big Wayne Morris in tow. Pope had slipped to fifth spot behind Bobby Blake and Harold “Boom-Boom” Cannon when he got into Cannon sending the latter into a spin. That brought out the first caution on lap ten with Pope indicating that the incident was his fault allowing Cannon to have his spot back in the running order. (more…)

Mark Gimmler tops Checkered Flag Sprints at Charlotte County

CFSS MEDIA

The Checked Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) kicked off its third year and the start of the 2010 season at Charlotte County Motorsports Park on Saturday February 20.

The pill pull system was used to set the line ups for the two heat races. Robbie Hackett in the 21A car had the pole for the start of the ROD END SUPPLY first heat race.19 of Keith Butler took the lead on lap one and held onto the lead and took the first heat race win of the season.

The pole position for the start of the SALDANA second heat went to Michael Tharp in the J1. Mark Gimmler in 51 took the initial race lead went on to win the heat.

Pills were again pulled to determine the BROWN & MILLER feature race line up, Mark Gimmler in the 51 had the pole and Gary Gimmler in the 29 was on the outside. As the green flag dropped it was Mark Gimmler who made the best start and took the early race lead, leaving his brother Gary behind him .

It looked like it was going to be a caution free race until contact between the 21 of Jimmy Alvis and the 19 of Keith Butler sent Keith sliding up into turn 3 wall brought out the first of two cautions. Keith Butler in the 19 car was able to restart and rejoin the race.

The race went back to green with Mark Gimmler in the lead, but only one lap later the second caution flag came out when Michael Tharpe  in the J1 car hit the tires at back gate which sent him into the wall of turn 3 and took out front axle and wheels.

On the finish Mark Gimmler was the winner with his brother Gary Gimmler with 2nd, Mickey Kempgens with 3rd, Keith Butler with 4th, and Amanda Ferguson with 5th.

The staff and racers of the CFSS would like to thank everyone for their support and hope to see you all at the next race. March 13, 2010

Landis Musser Takes Opener in TUSA Mod Lite Winter Nationals

Landis Musser TUSA Mod Lite Winner Thursday  @  East Bay Raceway Park       2.18.10

By Charlie Brown, Tampa, FL – Landis Musser of Laurel, Del. barely made the starting grid for the “B” Main in Thursday night’s TUSA Mod Lite Winter Nationals. His front brake broke just before the field took to the track and his crew just shut off the brake line and sent him out. Musser finished third to transfer to the “A” Main starting in 24th spot. The only lap he would lead was the important one as he took the lead from Apollo, Pa.’s Rick Ament coming off the final turn for the checkered.

Matt Hay started on the pole but Steve White quickly took control of the caution plagued 20 lap event. Fourteen year old James Hill went three wide to take second on lap two and then scrapped by White to take the lead on lap four. Hill’s chances ended one lap later when he got around collecting Bud Grossenbacher. (more…)

Bo Hartley tops TBARA at Desoto Super Speedway

by Marty Little/Tom Blakeley

BRADENTON, Fla. – Bo Hartley notched his second 30 lap TBARA feature victory during the four race winter tour on a bitterly cold Saturday night at DeSoto Super Speedway.

Hartley started the main event fourth in the 23 car field while outside front row starter D.J.Hoelzle powered his self-built mount into the lead at the drop of the green with a snarling field on their heels. The action on the track was anything but cold as the winged speedsters worked the high banked oval with close action throughout.

As the laps wound down Hoelzle had Hartley hot on his tail with Joey Aguilar, up from seventh, a close third. With six laps to go Hartley made his move on Hoelzle to wrestle away the top spot. Hoelzle stayed on the hammer to maintain second in front of Aguilar and they crossed the strip in close formation ahead of Shane Butler and Dude Teate in the caution free run.

Heat race wins fell to Tommy Nichols, Bo Hartley and Aguilar. For winning his heat race and the main event Hartley collected the Steele Performance Parts Sweep award, the first time it’s been done this season.

Brady Smith Breaks Into World of Outlaws Late Model Series Victory Lane In Finale Of DIRTcar Nationa

Brady Smith won’t go winless on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series in 2010.

The rising star from Solon Springs, Wis., made sure of that on Saturday night, capturing the national tour’s 50-lap A-Main that closed the 39th annual DIRTcar Nationals by University of Northwestern Ohio at Volusia Speedway Park.

Winless in 2009 during his first season as a WoO LMS regular, Smith broke through with a dominant performance in front of a chilled Sunshine State crowd. He fell to third place early in the distance after starting from the pole position but rallied to pass Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., for the lead on lap 20 and run then run away from the pack.

“It feels great to finally win one these Outlaw races again,” said Smith, whose two previous WoO LMS triumphs came during the 2008 season. “It’s so hard to win these races. I know we’re capable of doing it, but we raced the whole season last year and didn’t get it done, so to be able to do it here at Speedweeks – man, it’s actually harder to win a race down here than it is all season.

“We’re just really thrilled. This gives everyone a boost – me, the crew, the sponsors and definitely my bank account.”

Driving his Team Zero by Bloomquist car with a Vic Hill engine under the hood, Smith crossed the finish line with a winning margin of 2.456 seconds over Earl Pearson of Jacksonville, Fla., in the Bobby Labonte Motorsports MasterSbilt mount. Pearson was unable to challenge Smith following a lap-37 restart, leaving him with a runner-up finish in both WoO LMS events run during the DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH.

Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., registered a hard-earned third-place finish, charging forward from the 28th starting position in the Sweeteners Plus Rocket. Behind the wheel of his backup car after driveline woes sidelined his primary machine during heat action, he gained entry to the A-Main through a provisional spot granted to the highest-ranked non-qualified driver in the DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH points standings.

Opening-night WoO LMS winner Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., who started third, finished fourth in the Rocket Chassis house car – good enough to hand him the DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH Late Model championship for the second consecutive year. Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., completed the top five after starting seventh in the Sheltra Construction Rocket.
