Matthews Gets Second Double Win at Volusia

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL-  Fans arriving at Volusia Speedway Park on Saturday night may have thought that they has stumbled into a fiesta as Uno De Mayo Night at VSP brought back five divisions of racing action to the fastest half mile in the south.  The Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models, Budweiser Modifieds, Taylor Racing Products Sportsman, Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers, all took to the festive atmosphere and cranked up the excitement level to maximum.  And the night brought some different faces to Victory Lane celebrations as some of the divisional front runners struggled on the hottest night so far in 2010.

The Budweiser Modifieds were the only regular division to race at Volusia Speedway Park last week, and while Jamie Carter had used that opportunity to solidify his place at the top of the points standings, Jeff Mathews fell short as he had to leave the race early.  This Saturday it was Carter who had some difficulties while Larry Burkins took control and dominated the race, but Burkins still had a hard charging Jeff Mathews right on his tail in the final three laps.  And despite Burkins racing with an intensity that had the crowd cheering wildly, Jeff Mathews managed to get the nose of the 33 car under him in turn 3 on the final lap, then snatch the win away coming out of turn 4.

As exciting as the finish was, Larry Burkins was not pleased.  As Jeff Mathews stood on the Victory Lane stage, Burkins charged up and accosted the race winner in the middle of his winner’s interview.  That incident was very quickly defused by Volusia Speedway Park officials, and the resulting disqualification for bad conduct sent Burkins from a second place finish to the dog house.  Kent Corbin moved into the second spot, followed by Rob Underwood in third place.  Jamie Carter struggled but salvaged a fourth place finish, while Don Rollison Jr. capped off the top five.

As is often the case with Jeff Mathews, he raced again later on, this time challenging the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Model Division.  And as had been the case with the Budweiser Modifieds, Mathews found himself starting in the 7th spot on the grid and having to deal with some traffic to get to the front.  But the early part of the race was no picnic as repeated mishaps took some cars out of contention and required three restarts before lap 2.  Mathews avoided the mayhem and used the opportunity to make his way forward, as Jason Kimball led the early laps.

Kimball managed to outrun Mathews for a bit, but the Tampa “Repo Man” was coming fast and was all over Kimball’s car by lap 6.  Joe Kump and David Clegg were also making moves behind Mathews and Kimball, and had a race of their own developing for the third spot.  The earlier confrontation in Victory Lane must have lit a raging fire inside of Jeff Mathews, because he blew past Kimball on lap 7 and opened up an insurmountable lead on his way to his second double divisional win night of 2010 at VSP.  David Clegg managed to get past Kimball as well, grabbing second place and forcing Kimball to third, while Joe Kump and Bobby Richardson rounded out the top five.

The Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division came into Saturday night with Shaun Daugharty and Aaron Barsness tied at the top of the points standings, and fans knew that the tie would somehow be broken before the race was over.  Complicating matters for both drivers were their starting positions, as Daugharty wound up in the 5th spot on the grid, while Barsness was 7th, and the fact that no one had accounted for the unsponsored car of Chris Day, which shot out to the early lead and became the one to beat.

Both Daugharty and Barsness would be the beneficiaries of six cautions that were fairly evenly dispersed through the race, which kept things close among the leaders and never allowed anyone to run away from the others.  And it was just after one of those cautions when Shaun Daugherty discovered the high line and began using it to his advantage, making four passes in one lap to move to the second spot.  And on lucky lap 13 Daugharty again went high to pass Chris Day and take the lead.

Daugharty may have grabbed the lead, but Day was in no mood to let the front spot go without a fight.  Chris Day kept the 8 car either beside Daugharty, or right under his spoiler, for the final few laps of the race, creating a spectacular battle that had the fans on their feet.  And on the final lap Day positioned himself under Daugharty in turn 3, forcing a drag race to the checkers that Daugharty won by a nose.  Day would be second, with Stanton Mills coming on late in the race to grab third place.  Matt McGillivray finished fourth, while Aaron Barsness came home fifth.

The Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks saw a new face in Victory Lane on Saturday night after a hard fought and exciting race.  Phillip Brown was the early leader, but Mike Tovet was not about to allow a 7th starting position to ruin his night and was rapidly moving forward during the first half of the race.  Tovet would grab the lead after a restart halfway through, but only held it briefly before Tim Hughes cranked up the heat on him and snatched the lead away on lap 12.

While Tim Hughes was finding his grip on success, Trevor Gamble was losing his.  Gamble managed to create a caution as a flat tire sent him to the pits, but he failed to get back out in time to take the green, and thus ended up a lap down to the field and out of contention.  Hughes, on the other hand, was out in front and looking to stay there, as he grabbed his first win.  Mike Tovet was the second place finisher with Phillip Brown following for third.  Steve Oldaker drove his 51 car to fourth place, and D.J. Nobles also notched a top five finish.

Another top racer was having difficulties as the Challenger Division hit the track on Saturday. This time it was Casey Feaster, who has been virtually unbeatable, as his primary racecar developed mechanical issues that forced him into his backup ride.  That looked like a golden opportunity for Shawn Kosier to reclaim his winning ways, but no one accounted for Allen Espy, who climbed into the race car he had prepared for his daughter and showed that he still had a trick or two at his disposal.

At the restart from a late race caution, R.J. Glaser pounced on Espy at the green to steal the lead away, but a spinout in turn 2 forced yet another restart, and Glaser had shown his hand to the veteran racer.  So the second time that the field approached the green, Espy slowed to an absolute crawl, then fired off suddenly which totally snookered Glaser and gave the veteran a lead too big to erase.  Allen Espy got the win as James Sullivan moved ahead of Glaser for second place.  R.J. Glaser finished in the third spot followed by Casey Feaster and Shawn Kosier.

Volusia Speedway Park will take the next week off, but returns to action on May 15th with Fastlane 5 Racing on Military Appreciation Night.  All emebers of our armed forces past and present will be admitted free of charge with their military identification, and will see racing from VSP’s Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks. the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers.

Justin Reynolds Tops Super Stock 50 at Orlando SpeedWorld

Orlando Speedworld – 30th April 2010

A big 50-lap race for the Super Stocks was the highlight of Friday night’s racing at Orlando Speedworld as the season continued into week 8. This would see the best of the division from both Orlando and New Smyrna Speedway competing for top-dog honors on a night that also featured Legends cars, E-Modifieds and that ended with a twist for the Strictly Stock drivers.

The Bandolero racers would take their usual place as the night’s curtain-raiser with a race that saw #17 Mark Hooven beat out brother #27 Shawn Hooven to claim his first win of the season in the ‘Young Gun’ division. In the ‘Bandit’ division for the even younger drivers the win went to #55 Michael Held, who just held off the hard-charging #30 Noah Cornman in a dash for the finish line on the last lap.

by Andy Sandall, FASCAR Media

Orlando, Fl. (April 30, 2010)  The Super Stocks would soon be out on track, led away by pre-race favorites #01 Scott Smith and #16D David Gould, both benefiting from the post-qualifying invert that dropped #211 Jarret Korpi back down to 5th place on the grid despite earlier setting the fastest time. Right behind them would be #3 Jeff Colburn and #16x David Russell, as Korpi started alongside #23 Shannon Kelly, himself already a feature winner at Orlando Speedworld in 2010.

Kelly would have the worst possible start, pulling off the track without a single lap being recorded as he slowed down the back straight and lost power. Ahead of him Gould was taking advantage of his front-row start to power around the outside of Smith and take the early lead, but the cars were soon back together once #316 Joe Bandur suffered a flat right rear tire, causing a big spin coming out of turn 4 of the 5th lap to force the caution lights on. Bandur would head to the pits to get a new tire fitted, but unfortunately miss the restart, instantly sending him a couple of laps down when he later returned to action.

Gould would now have the inside line for the restart, meaning Smith would need to go around him if he wanted to grab the leader’s spot. Once back underway Smith would do his best to have a look at the high line, but this meant his concentration was all focused in front of him, and not noticing Colburn having a look down his inside, pulling level and then nosing his way in front to claim 2nd place. But with this race getting exciting another spin at the back, this time for #5 Tony Bandur, brought the pace truck out once more. This caution period would be critical in the outcome of the race as suddenly Korpi, who had been running well in the top 6 pack at the front of the race, slowed and pulled to a halt on the back-straight, needing a push back to the pits. He was quickly joined there by #14 Roger Benton, who also lost power and headed down onto the bandolero track to wait for assistance.

Korpi’s retirement now reduced the number of threat’s to Gould’s lead by one, and the current Orlando points leader wasted no time at the restart in charging away to build a lead over the chasing cars. Again his progress would be halted prematurely, this time as the race between #77 Justin Reynolds and Russell saw pressure turn into contact as the two came together in turn 3, spinning Russell out as they came around the corner and meaning both cars would be sent to the rear for the restart. This demotion did little to stop Reynolds progress, as when the green flag had been waved once more he was quickly back up to 5th and around the slower cars, while Russell had a little more trouble getting around his fellow racers, dropping slightly back before eventually making his way up through the field.

The first half of the race would see plenty of cautions to break up the action, but each time Gould was able to keep his composure and maintain his slim lead over Smith and Colburn, on one occasion keeping his car expertly under control despite the heavy nudges to his rear bumper from Smith to let him know his intentions of getting past. Once the action began to settle down the battle at the front was between Gould, Smith and Colburn, with a gap now developing between the leaders and the race for 4th place between Reynolds, Russell and #721 John Bennett.

The race’s halfway point would quickly pass, and the drivers made their way up to the 30 lap mark before they were bunched back up again thanks to a spin in turn 2 for #7i Scott Edwards that left him stranded at the bottom of the track. Again the leaders would pull away at the restart and quickly get back into order, but by now Russell had made his way past Colburn, and Reynolds was also beginning to consider a move towards the front, checking out the high line from his 6th position to see if he could deal with a number of his rivals in one swift move.

Russell would see his push into 3rd quickly fade, dropping back and being passed by Bennett, as Reynolds followed him through to claim 4th place. Gould was also having issues as Smith fought back at the front, forcing the Orlando favorite to move high up the track to block Smith’s run and slow him down. The ten laps to go signal would soon be displayed to signal the time for the racers to begin making their final moves, and quickly Bennett and Reynolds capitalized as Gould’s blocking move left Smith high and dry, allowing the two chasing cars through and sending Smith all the way back to 4th. Reynolds and Colburn would also sense a chance to advance at the expense of Smith, but their race got too close and Russell’s spin would see one last caution period for the race.

With so 7 laps to go, Gould made no mistake on the restart to stay in front and leave the field to fight it out behind him, expertly wheeling his car around the track for the final few laps. The race for 2nd was much closer as Reynolds and Bennett went door-to-door around the turns before Reynolds sent his rival high up the banking with just a couple of laps to go. Bennett fought back and set himself up for a drag race for the line out of turn 4, but Reynolds had justenough speed to hold him off and grab 2nd place, Bennett settling for 3rd with Colburn and Russell pushing Smith back even further as the race came to an end.

The result would still be pending the tech inspection of course, and this saw David Gould continue his ‘all or nothing’ year, where he has either won the race or failed to finish so far in the 2010 season, with a new twist as his car was disqualified by the inspector, handing the win to Reynolds and bumping the other drivers up a position. This added to an already successful return to the track after a couple of week’s absence for Reynolds, who has now won at Orlando in two separate divisions this season.

The Legends cars were up next in a race that ran caution free and saw #12 Critter Saile quickly move into the lead and head off into the sunset. Behind him the early running for 2nd place would be by #50 Ted Ruffo, but by half distance it was young #8 Donovan Ponder who had worked his way through and was setting off in pursuit of the leader. By the time checkered flag was waved just Saile, Ponder and Ruffo were left on the lead lap leaving Saile to cruise over the line, well ahead of his rivals for another victory to cement his position at the top of the points standings.

A small field of E-Modifieds returned to the track for their race, finally giving a first win to the #89 Josh Todd as a reward for his patient development of his car week after week so far this season. He would enjoy a flag-to-flag win, beating off the challenge of #40 Michael Williams Jr in their race at the front, both finishing well ahead of the fight for 3rd place between #15 Bruce Packer and #93 Bruce Gayton.

The final race of the night saw the racing end quite literally with a bang for a number of racers as the Strictly Stock drivers headed onto the track to find themselves heading for a race with a difference. Rather than their usual trip around the oval counter-clockwise, they were being turned around to head the other way. Worse was to come when they followed the pace-truck around their new route and saw cones directing them back into the infield, using the infield crossover road to create a temporary chicane for them to deal with, meaning they left the track onto the infield road in turn 3, made a left-handed turn at the crossover point, and headed back onto the track in turn 2!

The race now became more like an enduro than a stock car race, so it was no surprise that jumping out at the start were Crash-A-Rama regulars #32 Jim Erb and #86 William Hindman, joined up front by #19 Ricky Solomon and #27 Dan Binda, who both adapted to the changes remarkably quickly. Behind them a number of the driverss found the going much tougher, especially former track champion #8 Neil Kirby who was on the receiving end of some rough treatment on an early trip through the chicane that saw him spin out, damaging his car in the process and forcing an early retirement.

Contact was a fact of life in this race, Solomon competing for most of the race having to peer over a bent-up hood thanks to a rear-end hit on Hindman in the infield. Slowly the definition of the course began to loosen, with plenty of drivers opting to run over the infield grass rather than make the hard turn in the center chicane, and quickly the leaders at the front were cutting this corner, instead taking the penalty of bouncing over the rutted infield dirt in an attempt to get back onto the asphalt turns as quickly as possible.

The race at the front would be between Solomon, Erb and Hindman, but this was reduced to two competitors with just 3 laps to go as Hindman headed into turn 4 only to find his car unwilling to turn right, sending him nose-first into the wall with a loud bang that could only mean bad news. Hindman’s frustration was clear – and audible – to all present as he climbed from his car to survey the damage. Having only just got his season underway with his new 2010 car, it was now very badly bent and would be needing substantial repair work before it could head back out onto the track again.

The race would end with Erb and Solomon well out at the front, with Solomon holding off the enduro regular on the line to claim another win, this one in the most unusual of circumstances. His win would end up being much easier than the car length he managed eke out on the track suggested once Erb was disqualified in post-race tech, handing 2nd place to #00 Steve Daniels and 3rd to Binda, both of whom had adapted quickly to the new challenges thrown at them to run strongly for the whole 20 lap

KYLE BOOKMILLER HOLDS OFF FIELD FOR SECOND OWM WIN OF THE YEAR AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

The warmest weather of the season greeted fans and competitors alike Saturday evening at Auburndale Speedway and the racing was just as hot as well.

The Open Wheel Modifieds returned with seventeen racers in attendance to duke it out for the $1,000 first place prize. Kyle Bookmiller and Big Wayne Morris split the heat race wins and had the front row for the 40 lap feature event.

The first attempt at getting the race started was nullified when Doc McKinney and Rick Coffin made contact coming down the home stretch with Coffin tagging the wall. The damage to Coffin’s mount was too much and he went off on the hook while McKinney restarted.

Bookmiller grabbed the early advantage as Morris tried hard to make the tough outside line work. But before he could finally get in line, Morris was back several positions as Bookmiller settled into the lead with a host of heavy-hitters behind him. Caution was out early on lap two as Travis Rowland spun in turn three. On the ensuing restart, McKinney locked horns with Jimmy Wilkins and the two came to a stop at the top of turn four. This time it was McKinney who was unable to continue.

Bookmiller continued to set the pace but already it was evident that his engine was not at peak performance as there was plenty of “popping” from his exhaust. James Wilkins was putting the pressure on for the lead but slipped high on lap ten allowing James Wright III to slip into second.

Lap 20 saw the final caution right at mid race as Rowland and Jerry Artuso tangled in turn three. Rowland pulled off the track and called it a night.

From that point Bookmiller, battling his balky power plant, had to pull out all the stops to hold off Wright, whose car was running extremely hot. Wilkins remained in the thick of things staying right on Wright’s bumper as Kevin Macy and Morris moved up to challenge.

Bookmiller kept his car buried on the low side of the track as Wright threw out all the stops but was never able to make the pass aftraid if he slipped trying to make a move in the high groove he’d be “freight-trained.”

Bookmiller held on for his second win of the year trailed by Wright III, James Wilkins, Macy and Morris. Wright was none too happy in victory lane as he emerged from his car (which was leaking water like a geyser) accusing Bookmiller of “mirror driving” although the two shook hands after a brief discussion. The winner was both happy and apologetic in victory lane saying he “did what he needed to do” and that he was giving Wright plenty of room on the outside.

Third place finisher James Wilkins was more than pleased with finishing in the show spot. The 68-years-young driver, in a 26 year old race car, said his car was working good in the outside lane but “it just doesn’t have the straightaway speed to stay up with these other guys.”

Rounding out the top ten were Shawn Harper, Colin Cabre, Billy Bechtelheimer, David Grogan and Keith Lilley. So close were the cars in the race that, even though the final 20 laps were run under green, no one was even close to being lapped.

Lee Davis had a tough night with his new car in the Modified Mini Stocks. Davis never made a lap in the heat race as the car quit before the start and had to be pushed off the race track. Mike Sweet won the heat race and grabbed the feature race lead only to be punted into a spin by Burt Morse who was going for three feature wins in a row.

With Morse going to the rear of the restart line-up, Davis got a new lease on life as he quickly disposed of Sweet and was running away in the lead until his car suddenly shut off with a handful of laps left and he coasted into the infield.

Sweet re-claimed the front position and raced to his first win of the year in style over Jason Rendell and Scotty Sharpe. Rendell’s car was set down in tech however, moving Sharpe up to second in the final running order while Morse recovered for third. Bruce Anderson and Dennis Jones completed the front five. Point leader Fred Harrison, Jr. spun out during the Mini Stock heat race but got lucky when heat race winner Chris Narramore, Sr. had to pit before the start of the race, joining Harrison in the rear of the starting line-up instead of on the pole.

Donnie Guy set the early pace in the feature as the rest of the field duked it out behind him. Harrison sliced and diced his way to the front, taking the top spot away from Guy on lap eight and raced his way to his fifth win of the year. Guy held off the advances of Chris Spring and Narramore to grab second.
Fifth spot went to Kevin Steadman.

Make it a hat trick for Gerald White, Jr. as he won his third straight Legend Car feature. Jake Perkins and Mason Ketterman split the heat race wins and it was Perkins who set the early pace in the feature before White blasted past on lap three and never looked back. Justin Brown zipped up to second by the time the checker fell but was only within shouting distance of White. Ketterman took third while Perkins faded to fourth just ahead of newcomer Tyler Schule who was impressive scoring a top five in his initial start here.

Zach Napoleon, John Inman, Lynn Wiles, Bryan Silas and Dakota Baggett completed the top ten.

Sporting a new “camouflage” paint scheme on his car, point leader Jeff Waterman held off an impressive group of Street Stocks to claim his second win of the year. Dave Colpritt made sure Waterman knew he was there but had to settle for the runner-up spot trailed by Matt McCrary, Bobby Mobley and Eddie Hartin. Waterman and Colpritt split the heat race wins.

The tech shed was not kind to the V-8 Bomber class once again. David Fletcher led the first five laps of the feature before Brandon Duchscherer zoomed by to take an apparent win.

However, both Duchscherer and Fletcher were set down for weight infractions handing the win to Buddy Phillips, Jr., his first of 2010. Jason Howell would have finished second, but his car was also too light over the scales. Tav Gary was the only other car still running and his car did pass tech awarding him second place.

Point leader Josh Borem had mechanical troubles and dropped out of the feature but all the issues in tech still found him finishing third.

There was plenty of action to go around in the Scrambler class starting with plenty of bumpin’ and bangin’ in the heat race which waswon by point leader Kim Gullett. Gene Harrison actually passed Gullett on the final lap but was DQ’d for rough driving.

In the feature it was Ron Norman’s Ford Escort grabbing the top spot from Gullett and her Honda. Richie Acres had his Saturn on the move though. Driving with the passenger-side door missing after a heat race incident, Acres moved out front and stayed there to take the win. Norman would also eventually be another victim of the tech men as Richard Brown would take the checker in second followed by Brian Tyre, Matt Johns and William “Huggy Bear”
Hindman. Gullett wound up sixth.

The Bandolero feature was over before a lap could be completed. Only two cars showed up to race. Heat winner Derek Sobel made contact with Cameron White going down the back stretch in slid hard into the wall backwards. With his car too badly damaged to continue, Sobel was out and the win was subsequently awarded to White who refused to claim his accolades because he felt the accident was his fault.

Next week the Open Wheel Modifieds return for their second of back-to-back race nights. Also running will be the Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Scramblers, V-8 Bombers and Sportsman cars . Racing start at 7 PM.

Also on Saturday, Auburndale Speedway will be helping out with the World’s Largest Poker Run to benefit the Fallen Firefighter Survivors Foundation presented by the Red Knights Motorcycle Club. The track will be hosting a car show from 1-5 PM. For more information call 863-551-1131 or log on to www.auburndaleracing.com.

Tim Russell Wins Billie Harvey Memorial at New Smyrna

by Andy Sandall, FASCAR Media

Samsula, FL (April 24, 2010) The fans and racers came out in force on Saturday night for the 3rd running of the annual Billie Harvey Memorial 100 for Super Late Models, but few could have anticipated the incredible race they would witness as the drivers came together to put on an instant classic out on the track. The big race would be set-up perfectly by an equally thrilling Pro Truck feature, as well as appearances by other local weekly divisions. But it was the big 100-lapper that had the crowds on their feet for a race that will still be talked about for months to come, and set a high standard for the rest of the season. (more…)

The race got back to green with Tommy Denton in the X in the lead, but only one lap later, the 83A of Christine Auld was re-fired, the race got back underway.

Rasslin Plus Racin Equals Excitement At Volu

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL-  Fans got twice the action for their admission price on Saturday night as “Rasslin and Racin” tag teamed everyone at Volusia Speedway Park.  While the wrestling got an early start and excited the crowd until heat races began, the Top Gun Sprint Car Series, Florida Mini Sprint Association, and Volusia’s own Budweiser Modifieds, picked up where the wrestlers left off and kept the energy level high. And in addition to exciting racing and wild wrestling events, the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association turned out in full force with a museum load of racing history that can still go fast and turn left.

The Florida Wrestling Association got things going early as things got a little out of control.  The American Freedom Fighter defeated The Russian Assassin in a “mask for mask” bout, but managed to allow the hated Russian to escape without removing his mask.  J.C. Clark had two bouts, as he first defeated Barney Rumble in a scheduled bout, then lost to The Genius Lanny Poffo in a challenge match.  And two sworn enemies, Wildman Brody and Rick the Reaper, teamed up in a “Bunkhouse Rules” tag team match against The Mulkey Brothers.  The ensuing free-for-all resulted in everything that a wrestling fan could ask for with continuous action both in and out of the ring.  In the end The Mulkey Brothers won the match, but escaped without compensating the host facility for multiple chairs that were broken over their opponents’ heads.

The only regular racing division on the card for Saturday’s action were the Budweiser Modifieds, which saw Garrett Stewart put his 67 machine on the pole after much toil and trouble, and control the early part of the race.  But Jamie Carter had no concern over how much time, money, or effort, went into Stewart’s racing team, and he was all over the 67 from the opening laps, using the high side to stay all but side by side with Stewart for lap after lap.  Directly behind Stewart and Carter another side by side battle erupted between Jeff Mathews and Larry Burkins over the second spot, which lasted until problems sidelined Mathews’ car on lap 7.

As Mathews made his exit, Jason Davis and Jimmy Carter both stepped up their games, moving into the top five and putting pressure on the leaders.  Garrett Stewart began to fade under the strain as Jamie Carter assumed the lead and Larry Burkins climbed into second place, and as the laps wound down Burkins put all sorts of pressure on Jamie Carter but never managed to get the upper hand.  Jamie Carter grabbed the win followed by Burkins in second place, and Jason Davis got past Stewart to claim the third spot.  And while the 67 machine may have slipped a little late in the race, Garrett Stewart earned a very respectable fourth place finish and was followed by Jimmy Carter for fifth place.

Fans were excited to see if young Amanda Ferguson was a fluke or a find as the Top Gun Sprint Car Series hit the Barberville clay, but Ferguson ran into early mechanical issues during her heat race and was forced to retire for the night.  That opened the door for the always exciting Gene Lasker to take control, and he put his 02 machine on the pole for the 25 lap feature race.  Lasker never slows down, and failure to do so under caution early on proved costly as Lasker had to swerve to avoid a wrecked car in turn four, lost control, and backed hard into the turn four exit barrier.  Lasker drove away from that incident but was penalized to the rear for failure to heed the caution flag and lights, then made huge progress toward rejoining the frontrunners, but was disqualified by top Gun Series officials after the race ended.

Lasker’s misfortune was Tommy Denton’s gain, as Denton assumed the lead.  However, Danny Martin had his car hooked up for the track conditions, and he rocketed past Denton before lap 12 and began setting a pace that made the scorers sweat.  Martin outclassed everything on the track, lapping cars all the way up to third place before the checkered flags put a stop to his progress.  Ryan Partin also had a fast car and claimed the second spot, while Shane Kreidler followed in third place.  Tony Agin and Mike Schroeder rounded out the top five finishers.

The idea of watching miniature sprint cars powered by motorcycle engines may send some less seasoned fans toward the exits, but those who have the knowledge to stay and watch the Florida Mini Sprints in action know that the little cars can scream around VSP’s fast half mile at around 130 miles per hour, and that their races are almost always competitive and exciting.  2009 Mini Sprint Champion Tim O’Donnell held the pole and led the 21 car field to the green flag, but not far behind him lurked his son, Brett O’Donnell, who has been aggressively building on last year’s Rookie of the Year honor, and who did not care if it is his dad that he had to beat in order to get it done.  Steve Crabtree held the second spot early on as Eddie Moss Jr. and Jessie Teed joined the O’Donnells in a virtual lock on the top five positions.  And right outside the top five was Rae Lynn Moss, who showed about the same amount of love for her dad, Eddie Moss Jr, as Brett O’Donnell was showing for his.

One of the casualties in a mid race mishap was Sheldon Kinser Jr, who ended up on his side in turn two but righted the car and drove away, then began sorting his way forward toward the top ten, eventually climbing to a seventh place finish.  The caution flag got quite a bit of work during the race as various spins and contact slowed things down, but the periodic restarts also kept everyone within striking distance of each other, resulting in numerous position changes all through the field during the entire feature race, and keeping the excitement level high.

But thanks to the multiple slowdowns the race had to be shortened to 15 laps, and that set up a furious two lap sprint to the finish that had cars exchanging positions more than twice per lap.  Final lap moves gave the win to Brett O’Donnell while Eddie Moss Jr. finished in second place, and Jessie Teed ratcheted up the heat on the final laps to nab third place.  Tim O’Donnell was fourth and Steve Crabtree was fifth, as he managed to keep Rae Lynn Moss just out of the top five.

History buffs had their cameras clicking when the Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association (DAARA) hit the track and raced their machines.  Eric Orewiler of Hernando got a win in 1934 Hudson, and Dave Cash of Palm Coast raced his 1979 Gambler Sprint to the checkers as well.  Lonnie Roberts, who is better known for his exploits in the National Late Model Series, drove a 1932 Ford modified sportsman to a win, and a three quarter midget built in 1975 and raced by Tony Stewart in his teenaged days, secured a victory for Lake Worth’s Jerry Paquin.

Volusia Speedway Park celebrates “Uno De Mayo” on May 1st, as the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models, Budweiser Modifieds, Taylor Racing Products Sportsman, Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, and the 4 Cylinder Challengers, all return to action.  For more information on Volusia Speedway Park, or to see a complete schedule of racing action, please visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net.
