TIMELY CAUTION HELPS BOBBY BLAKE TO SECOND OWM WIN OF THE YEAR AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

by Dave Westerman

Race drivers are often asked how much “luck” plays a part in their sport. Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway, Bobby Blake used a very well-timed caution flag to score his second Open Wheel Modified feature of the year in front of yet another big crowd.

Keith Lilley and Shawn Harper won the heat races for the 19 cars entered for the nights’ Modified competition, but it would not be a good feature race for either driver. The pair tangled on the opening lap in turn three causing a wild melee that saw several cars bruised and bent. Harper took his car to the pits for repairs along with Josh Todd who had to replace a flat right rear tire.

Both drivers made it back out for the restart, but Harper now found himself going from the pole position to the rear of the restart line-up. With the inside row moving up a position, that now put Bobby Blake on the pole with Lilley on the outside front row.

Blake zipped to the lead as Lilley fought to maintain the high line. This time it was Colin Cabre drifting into Lilley in the exact same spot as the first incident happened. Again, Lilley went for a spin, but this time no one else received any damage and a third complete restart was called for.

This time a full lap would be completed before things went awry again… and again it was Lilley involved as he slid high off turn four, collided with Raymond Lovelady and went sliding full-speed into the infield. Lilley’s car struck the Elkins Automotive push truck but fortunately no one was injured. Lilley’s car had the rear end shoved to the side and he was done for the night while the push truck was badly damaged and needed a tow home at the end of the evening.

On the restart, Blake began to set the pace with James Wilkins in tow as the pair sped away from third-running Cabre. Action continued under green until Harper looped his mount in turn two on lap 14. Blake continued to set the pace with Wilkins all over him. On lap 25, Wilkins drove by Blake on the outside to take the lead only to see the caution flag out for a tangle between Eddie Hartin and Ken Lawrence in turn two.

For the restart, the field reverted back to the running order from lap 24 place a relieved Blake back in the lead. Wilkins kept up his charge but things were changing behind the lead duo as Travis Roland and James Wright III both got by Cabre and closed on the front pair.

Wilkins tried his best but had to settle for a close second to Blake who won his second Modified race of the year after taking the checker on opening night this year. Only one driver, Lilley, was able to win two OWM features in all of 2009, now Blake and Kyle Bookmiller have already turned the trick in 2010.

Action continued right to the checker as Wright passed Roland for third on the final lap. Roland settled for fourth with point leader Wayne Morris fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Von Pope, Kevin Macy, Harold Crooms, Cabre and Harper. As a testament to the quality of the field, once again all cars running finished on the lead lap of the 40 lap feature.

The Sportsman feature race was very un-sportsmanlike in the early going with caution flags flying numerous times before the first three laps could be completed with many cars suffering body damage and a few left “dragging their tails.”

Once things settled down, first heat winner Mark Medeiros settled into the lead with Dave Dunkin and second heat winner Bart Weatherford in tow. Weatherford eventually got by Dunkin for second but Medeiros was up to the task and led all the way for his second win of the year with Weatherford a very close runner-up. Dunkin held on for third trailed by Brett Jenkins and Chris Lewellen.

The Mini Cup feature was a much tamer affair than last time out as Harold Crooms won his second straight 25 lap headliner.

Crooms and Sam Scott won the heats but Scott never got a chance to challenge as he slapped the front stretch wall on lap three and retired from the race. From that point Crooms was on cruise-control as he easily topped Rick Ragan and Georgia’s John Beach who were the only two cars within a half-lap of him. Tyler Scofield was fourth and Rick Cline, Jr. took fifth spot.

The Legend Car feature saw some wild late race action, but it was all well behind winner Gerald White, Jr. as he took his fourth win of the year. Just two cautions slowed the event for minor incidents. Justin Brown led the opening 16 laps before giving way to White who drove off from the field at that point.

Jake Perkins would ultimately end up second followed by Tyler Smith, Mason Ketterman and Brown. Heat race wins went to Brown and Smith.

Heat winner Jeff Lacy spun out in turn two while leading the V-8 Bomber feature handing the lead and eventual win to Larry Chumney II. Point leader Josh Borem was second while Lacy got back to third at the finish. Matt Johns and Gene Harrison were fourth and fifth.

Bandolero racing saw the Bibeau family back in action and they scored a one-two finish as son Coty topped dad Mark. Cameron White was third ahead of Teddy Lively, Daniel Conlin, Sr. and Andy Metz.

Heather Guy shook off a balky engine to top the Kids Club feature over Dakota Hunt, Megan Gosselin and Brandon Guy.

Volusia Speedway Honors the Military with Five Divisions

by VSP Media

BARBERVILLE, FL- The racers and fans at Volusia Speedway Park got a break last Saturday night as a pause in the schedule allowed for a weekend off from racing, and when they returned this Saturday it was with a renewed focus and determination, that led to high quality racing.  Fans saw action from the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks, and VSP’s own 4 Cylinder Challengers, as everyone paid special tribute to our fighting forces on Volusia Speedway Park’s Armed Forces Night.

Over the past few outings Mike Tovet has made some waves in the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks, but some time off seemed to refresh others who needed to win, so Tovet found himself following instead of leading.  And from the start of the race, it became evident that Joe Belkey was back, as he grabbed second place from Mike Tovet and began working on the race leader, Cory Hupp.  But Trevor Gamble was right behind him and slipped around for second, and the front four cars began a several lap long mix and match for the top spots.

Belkey, who has suffered through some setbacks as of late, cranked up the determination a few more notches, made his way back to second place, and got alongside Cory Hupp in a battle for the lead.  Belkey won that battle on lap 12 as he overwhelmed Hupp and sprinted out to a sizable lead, as Hupp developed mechanical issues and slowed his pace.  Belkey dominated the rest of the race despite a challenge from Trevor Gamble, and notched his first win of the 2010 racing season. Gamble followed in second place while Mike Tovet claimed the third spot.  Mark Maresca had a good showing in fourth place and “Shady” Grady Christian returned to the field with a fifth place finish.

Many of the racers who normally compete with the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division at VSP used their weekend off to venture west to Ocala for a race, and that event left many of them beaten and bruised.  And one of the most damaged of the group was Aaron Barsness, who got tangled in an accident early in that race and left with a mangled race car, which looked greatly healed as it pulled onto the clay at Volusia Speedway Park on Saturday night. But Barsness had to find a way to overcome a hard charging Stanton Mills, who was out of the blocks like a racer possessed, and who hit turn two so hard and fast that the race car actually bicycled.

Mills looked to be too much for Barsness to overtake as the two of them separated themselves from everyone else, but a lack of caution flags allowed the field to spread out and forced the leaders to cope with traffic everywhere on the track.  And as fate would have it, that traffic came into play as Barsness and Mills entered the final five laps of the race.  A slower car caused Mills to lift just long enough for Barsness to get the advantage, and that determined who won the race.

Aaron Barsness recovered from last weekend’s Ocala disaster with a win at VSP, followed by Stanton Mills in second place. Shaun Daugharty, who also suffered through a miserable experience at Ocala, recovered for a third place finish, followed by Chris Day and Kyle Chappell to round out the top five.

The Daytona Dodge Chrysler Late Models put on quite a show for the fans Saturday night as some regulars fell by the wayside and a determined winner drove a wounded race car into Victory Lane.  The race featured one red flag on lap 7, as Hamp Conley executed a cartwheeling crash along the backstretch wall.  While it was both exciting and frightening to see and mangled the race car, Conley thankfully walked away from the carnage.

The race was dominated by Tyler Ivey, who jumped to the front and left everyone else to fight over what was left.  David Clegg patiently worked his way up to the second spot just before Conley’s accident stopped things, and held that position despite Lawton Minchew’s efforts to pass him. but in a rare moment for the veteran driver. Clegg simply overdrove the car in turn 3 and nosed into the inside barrier, which damaged the nose enough that it sent him to the pits for the remainder of the race.  Joe Kump also worked his way into the top three, but had nothing for Ivey until late in the race.

But just as it looked like Tyler Ivey was going to win by an embarrassingly large margin, his car began smoking heavily and his pace slowed.  Ivey kept after it, realizing that he might have enough left to make it to the finish, and that he had such a huge lead that Kump might not catch him.  Each lap the car smoked worse and the engine sounded flatter, but Ivey never relented, and although Kump managed to catch him in the final laps, Tyler Ivey scored a victory as the laps ran out on Joe Kump.  Ivey celebrated in Victory Lane while VSP fire crews made sure that the car would not provide any fireworks, and Joe Kump went to the pits in second place.  Lawton Minchew finished in the third spot followed by Donnie Chappell in fourth and Jeff Phipps in fifth place.

The Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks seem to always provide a tough and tumble brand of racing, and Saturday night was more of the same.  Randy Strehle was one of the victims as he and three other cars tangled in turn two, Jim Goempel struggled in the race until his engine expired on lap 6, and Robert Donaly suffered a loose wheel in turn 3 that caused him to limp to the pits, following the tire and rim which went there on its own accord.

And while others were trying to survive , Scott Mooers was totally in control as he led the race from flag to flag.  Matt Schell scored a second place finish thanks to his determined moves throughout the race that helped him climb up from the 13th starting position.  But the big mover of the race was Austin Kirkpatrick, who struggled with mechanical issues in his heat race and wound up calling a friend in the grandstands to come and help fix it before the feature event.  Kirkpatrick finished in the third spot while David Whitt and Richard Calmes finished behind him in fourth and fifth places.

The 4 Cylinder Challengers had something to race for as Astor Recycling provided a $100 bonus to the winner, and from the start it looked like it was once again time for things to change at the top.  Mechanical issues delayed Casey Feaster from staging for the race, and he failed to get onto the track before the green flew.  Shawn Kosier, who dominated the Challengers in the early part of the season, suffered a flat tire and limped into the pits, while Nathan Rhoades and Steven Johnson wound up with damaged cars from contact.

Meanwhile, Tony Laporta was back at the track and looked like his past issues were long gone, as he shot to the lead and stayed there for the win. Larry Langston came on strong and worked his way to second place, but could not find a solution for Laporta and had to settle for the runner up position at the checkers, and James Smith fought his way to a third place finish.  Kevin Dugan was fourth, while Denica Hetznecker overcame some close calls and raced hard for the fifth place finish.  And despite the flat tire early on, Shawn Kosier battled back to salvage sixth place, gaining 13 positions from his original 19th starting position.

Teenagers will be the focus this coming Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park. “Teen Night” will feature giveaways, prizes, contests, plus special events geared for teens, and there will be a special teen section at the track.  Gates open at 5:30PM on Saturday, May 22nd, with racing at 7:30PM.  For more information, visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.net.

Shane Butler tops TBARA at Columbia Motorsports Park

LAKE CITY, Fla. – Patience paid off big time for Shane Butler Saturday night at Columbia Motorsports Park as he waited until leader Larry Brazil, Jr. bobbled on the last lap then sped past on the bottom side to claim the victory in the 30 lap TBARA sprint car feature event.

Steve Heisler and Johnny Gilbertson led the field to the green flag on the very fast half-mile oval but the guy on the move from the outset was young Ben Fritz who had started sixth. By lap eight Fritz was on the point and motoring away from the field until a caution on lap 12 for the stalled car of Larry Brazil.

When the green flag reappeared it was Fritz over Brazil, Jr., Butler, Dude Teate and Bo Hartley. On lap 15 D.J. Hoelzle spun in front of the leaders and Fritz could not avoid contact. Neither driver was injured but both cars were finished for the evening.

Brazil, Jr. was the new leader with Butler, Teate and Hartley in tow but they only got in two laps under green before Gilbertson looped his mount in turn two to bring out the final yellow of the event. The final dozen laps were all green and it appeared that Brazil, Jr.was headed for a win but with three laps remaining his car began to get loose and Butler just waited until Brazil nearly lost the handle on the final lap, then dove for the bottom, grabbed the top spot and drove to victory, his first this season on the tour. Brazil, Jr. claimed runner-up money over Teate, Bo Hartley and Aguilar. Aguilar and Brazil, Jr. won the heat races.

Feature (30 laps) – 1. Shane Butler, 2. Larry Brazil, Jr., 3. Dude Teate, 4. Bo Hartley, 5. Joey Augilar, 6. Tommy Nichols, 7. Bobby Rose, 8. Sonny Hartley, 9. Johnny Gilbertson, 10. Steve Heisler, 11. Ben Fritz, 12. D. J. Hoelzle, 13. Larry Brazil – DNS.

Symons tops Dennis Boyd Memorial, Chastain Wins Late Model at New Smyrna Speedway

by Andy Sandall, FASCAR Media

New Smyrna Speedway – 15th May 2010

The Dennis Boyd Memorial 50 for Open Wheel Modifieds was the headline race of the night at New Smyrna Speedway on Saturday, but it was a couple of horrendous crashes for the Late Models that had everyone in the stands talking. Amazingly the night ended with nothing more than some of the driver’s pride hurt, but the fabricators and race shops of Central Florida would have plenty of work on their hands come Monday morning once the dust had settled and the state of some of the cars as they left the track was fully appreciated.

The Dennis Boyd Memorial 50 brought a big field of regular Modifieds to the track, and the pre-race pill draw fittingly put #22 Jason Boyd, son of the race’s late honoree, on pole position alongside #12 John Zidek, and ahead of #12 Tank Tucker and #12T Rich Clouser, who was driving the hastily renumbered spare car from Tucker’s pit. Making up the front three rows came the always dangerous #4B Alan Bruns and one of the pre-race favorites #66 Jerry Symons.

From the green flag it was the worst possible start for Zidek who locked his brakes heading into turn 1, sailing high up the banked corner before regaining control, but losing 3 places in the process. Boyd would now have Tucker and Clouser in his mirrors as he set the early pace, but soon the cars were slowed back down thanks to a spin for Tucker, under pressure from #38 Chad Pierce, bringing out the pace truck. The restart would see Symons make a tremendous start, flying around Bruns and up to 2nd  behind Boyd, while Pierce would also make a move to get himself into 4th place. The race at the front soon split into two, as Boyd, Symons and Bruns began to expand the gap between themselves and Pierce in 4th, who was now fending off the advances of the identical cars of Tucker and Clouser.

Another caution would soon follow as #51B Butch Herdegen headed up to the wall for the first of what would be a number of spins or incidents suffered by the Super Stock regular during the race, but this stoppage saw the face of the race change dramatically once Symons used the high line he was handed to great effect as he passed Boyd on the outside to take the lead, while Pierce would also find speed up high to grab 3rd from Bruns. Several quick cautions would break the flow of the race over the next ten laps, but every one affected the back of the field more than the front as Symons showed no signs of struggling, but Boyd equally reacted by looking high and low for a way back to the lead. By the time the racers took the crossed half-way mark flags it was still Symons leading Boyd at the front, but now Pierce was snapping at Boyd’s heels as Tucker and Clouser ran right in their tire tracks waiting for an opportunity to pounce.

Another spin for Herdegen would bunch the whole field back up again, and this time Boyd anticipated the restart perfectly to power under Symons heading into turn 1, with Tucker also doing well to grab 3rd with an outside pass on Pierce. Boyd’s return to the front spot was short-lived however, and just two laps later Symons dropped low to slide under the #22 in turn 1, although it would take a couple of laps of side-by-side racing before Symons could move across and claim the lead all for himself, due in no small part to the distraction for Boyd of Tucker nudging him hard to his rear bumper. Boyd would do his best to defend his place, but soon Tucker was using the high line to get around and grab 2nd for himself.

By now Symons was well ahead and pulling away from the others, and with clear track in front of him Tucker would also extend the gap between himself and Boyd in 3rd. The race for 4th became the closest on the track as Clouser and Pierce ran bumper-to-bumper before Clouser got the run he was looking for out of turn 4 to move up a position with just 4 laps to go. Soon the checkered flags would be out confirming the win for Symons, with Tucker well back in 2nd and Boyd rounding out the top 3 in what must have been an emotional race for him.

For many in the stands and probably for every one of the track officials, the fact that the main race of the night had run free of any major incidents was a relief after the earlier Late Model race that had twice gone to red flag conditions and had seen one popular racer taken to hospital for precautionary observation. Again another sizeable field of cars had been assembled for what on paper looked like a great race, but the action had barely begun before the biggest wreck seen on the track this season brought the drivers back to a halt while the emergency crews raced to the scene. Leading off on pole position #4 Cynthia Strahley led the cars into the first turn with #4B Alan Bruns alongside her and #99w Brett Woodley and #98 Bobby Joe Woodley right on her rear bumper.  Disaster struck as something mechanical gave up on Strahley’s car as it hit the middle of the corner, instantly slowing her down with the whole pack of cars bunched up tight behind her. Bruns was able to get by on the low side, but neither Brett  nor Bobby Joe Woodley had anywhere to go to avoid her rapidly decelerating car. Brett Woodley would have no control as his car plowed under the rear of Strahley, lifting her car up and onto it’s nose before sliding over to hit the catch-fence high in the turn, eventually dropping back down onto its wheels.

Instantly the track crews were out to check on the drivers, but the severity of the crash was obvious to everyone as they looked on at the badly mangled #4 and #99w cars. Having happened at the front of the field a number of other cars had taken avoiding action and needed to be helped clear of the incident, including #9z Zach Donatti and #59 Chris Brannon, but both were able to continue once pulled clear. A lengthy red flag period would follow to allow EMTs to head over to the track to check out Strahley and Woodley, with Strahley heading back to the hospital as a precaution after complaining of pain and soreness. Eventually the track would be cleared and the remaining cars able to fire back up, but the restart would see Strahley and both Woodleys having their cars brought back to their pits courtesy of the wreckers.

From the restart the initiative was grabbed by #36 Ross Chastain who flew around Bruns and into the lead. Bruns would quickly be relegated one more place thanks to #9 Rich Clouser, but the fight between these two seasoned campaigners was far from over as Bruns fought back to pull level. Behind the leaders it was two of Florida racing’s brightest young stars who were battling for 4th place in the form of Donatti and #20 Anthony Sergi, who were putting on their own display of door-to-door racing for the fans. A spin for #42 Jesse Pontello bunched the cars up once more and gave Clouser a brief taste of the lead from the restart before Chastain captured it back with a smooth pass on the low side. Donatti and Sergi would also continue to provide entertainment with two perfectly matched cars running side by side before a spin by #57 Eddie Furtak coming off turn 4 brought the pace truck out once again.

This restart provided the second major incident of the race, and would once more see the track staff scrambling with the rest of the racers sitting in turn 4 under red flag conditions. Chastain had already led the cars over the start line and through the first corner, but immediately behind him a big hit from Donatti on the back-quarter of Sergi’s car turned the young pro-truck ace, leaving him stranded in the middle of the back-straight. Just as with Strahley’s earlier wreck, the cars being so close together after the restart could only lead to disaster, and this time it was Furtak and #46 Rick Taylor who had nowhere to go, Furtak in particular slamming hard into the rear of Sergi’s car. Somehow Sergi was able to return to the pits under his own power, but now his car looked more like a competitor in a demolition derby than a Late Model, while others needed the assistance of the tow trucks to get their pride and joys back to their trailers. Donatti would still be in the field for the restart, but on the final lap before the green flag his car came to a halt on the back straight, ending his night too.

Clouser would make one last attempt to grab the win once the race was back underway, but his lead was short-lived as Chastain gave him a tap to the side and used the space this created to move underneath and reclaim the leader’s spot. With the white flag soon on display to denote just one lap remaining Chastain, Clouser and Bruns were nose to tail, and on the final push out of turn 4 Clouser gave one last nudge to the rear of Chastain’s car, but the #36 was quickly pulled back into line to take the checkered flag, his arm aloft through his window to acknowledge the standing fans cheering the racers over the line in what was an incredible finish.

The night had begun with a Sportsman race that quickly saw #27 Phil Luizzo grab the lead in the car that had been wheeled to victory the previous week under a different number by Mike Soukup, but he was quickly sent back to 3rd as #23 Mike Pletka and #111 Donnie Williams made short work of their push to the front. A caution quickly followed as #28John Emerson span in turn 3 as he attempted to pass Luizzo, his turning rear end clipping Luizzo’s rear panel as he went high up the track to avoid him, and forcing Luizzo back to the pits for a new tire as Emerson followed him in to have his now damaged rear bumper removed to allow him to continue.

By the halfway mark Pletka and Williams would be well ahead in the lead, running door-to-door around the high banks before Pletka finally nosed in front and began to pull away. Williams would make a late charge to get back to the rear of his great rival’s car, but it was too little too late as Pletka took the win by 2 car lengths from Williams, with Luizzo a distant 3rd ahead of Emerson.

The Mini Stocks put on a great show for the crowd, with most of the excitement coming from the race for last place! Even before the race had started the prohibitive favorite was out of the running once #81 Cody Blair went up in smoke down the back straight, giving #10 Michael Seay the first of two face-fulls of smoke that he would receive before the race was done. Blair would limp back to the pits with no chance of making the race, giving little resistance for #09 Todd Haught as he moved from the rear to the front before the first lap was complete, bringing #14 Chace Miller with him.

Behind the two front-runners the race for 3rd was one of the most entertaining seen out on the track this season as #11 Pug Puglisi, who bought a sizeable fan-club with him, and #6 Mark Broat battled for 3rd, all the time being buzzed by the diminutive red Pinto of Seay. With brake problems demonstrated by a spin in afternoon practice, Seay was left with no choice but to use shifting to slow himself into the corners, and every turn was a new adventure as he headed up high in the center of the corner only to cut back hard and shoot down the inside across the bottom of the track. Puglisi would be the first to defend these moves before he was able to get ahead of Broat and leave him to fend off Seay’s charge. This he managed successfully before his engine gave up in spectacular fashion with Seay again in the wrong place at the wrong time and feeling the full force of the oil smoke now pouring from every orifice of Broat’s car.

With the race restarted the action now split into two battles, Haught and Miller at the front well ahead of Puglisi and Seay running for 3rd. Laps continued to tick down and with the white flag on display the cars came around for one lap left, but this proved to be one too many for Miller as he overcooked his run out of turn 4, spinning and heading backwards into the wall. This would see the cars make one last restart, which would lead to Haught taking a comfortable win over Puglisi, who’s legion of fans cheered him over the line to 2nd place despite Seay’s last corner swoop towards the finish line.

The Super Stocks feature saw plenty of lead changes early on as #15 Michael Wofford made the best start from the front row before conceding his lead to #01 Scott Smith, closely followed in a group at the front by #3 Jeff Colburn, #56 Bobby Holley and #5 Cody Blair. The race between Holley and Colburn was close and fierce, but boiled over when both driver’s car got loose in turn 3, sending the cars behind them scattering across the track as they slid sideways. The two drivers would be sent to the rear for the restart, but a strong disapproving nudge by Colburn on Holley under the caution flag was enough to send both cars back to the pits for a stern talking to from track officials before the race would be allowed to continue.

Once restarted Blair would head off into an unassailable lead to leave Holley and Smith to fight it out for 2nd. With 25 laps gone Blair would cross the line for yet another 2010 feature win, while Holley managed to find his way around Smith and hold him off to cross the line in 2nd place.

The night finished as always with the Strictly Stocks, who once again saw #9 David Brannon getting away to a big early lead that never looked like being surrendered, while son #35 Chris Brannon put on his usual show for the fans by drifting around every corner, smoke pouring from his wheels. As usual Chris would be disqualified in tech, handing a deserved 2nd place to #21 Maureen Dahm, who enjoyed one of her best races to date in moving through the field to lead the chasing pack.

Five Divisions Provide Excitement at Ocala

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

All Photos Courtesy of rewingphotos.com

OCALA, FL-  Fans who were in attendance at Ocala Speedway last Friday night saw an action packed night of hard fought racing, and may have assumed that this Friday might not could be as exciting.  If that was the case, then they were wrong.  The Colortyme Modifieds, Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, Amsoil Thunder Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Gladiators, all ran exciting and competitive races, which had the crowd on their feet and cheering for the second week in a row.

Chip “Hollywood” Owen held the pole position and led 13 Colortyme Modifieds to the green flag in their feature race, but by the time that the first lap was completed Jeff Mathews had planted himself in second place and was about to pounce on the leader.  But Mathews was surprised by Kyle Bronson who roared past and took up the task of making Owen sweat.  And as it turned out, Bronson got too aggressive with his efforts to pass Owen, colliding with the 1 car in turn one and actually riding up and over it before both spun to a stop.  Bronson was relegated to the rear for causing the caution, while a broken spring on Owen’s machine ended his night early. Michalak tops Sportsman, Anderson in Super Lates at Orlando SpeedWorld

By Andy Sandall, FASCAR Media

Orlando Speedworld – 14th May 2010

For a second successive week it was the Pro Trucks and Super Late Models that provided the most excitement at Orlando Speedworld, but a packed racing program saw the supporting divisions putting on a show for the fans too. A feisty race that boiled over for the E-Modifieds, back-to-back races in two divisions won by two different drivers who share the same name, and a first-time feature win for one local racer were just some of the headlines on a night that saw both fans and drivers battle their way through the traffic heading home from the Space Shuttle launch to get their weekly racing fix.

The Bandoleros led off the night’s racing as always with yet another win in the ‘Young Gun’ class for #17 Mark Hooven, well ahead of brother #14 Shawn Hooven. Finishing immediately behind him on the track came #55 Michael Held, confirming yet another decisive victory in the ‘Bandit’ class, and meaning that the two black cars out on track came home ahead of the four white cars.

Even less variety in paint schemes and decoration in the next race as a group of black and red Mini Stocks took to the track, although admittedly #31 David Russell could argue that his car shaded more towards orange and black than red. With #97S Scott Jarrett starting on pole the race quickly developed into a two-car battle as #85 Rex ‘Boneman’ Hollinger leapt out into an early lead with Russell right on his tail in 2nd place. The battle between these two old rivals went on lap after lap with Russell trying every line on the track to find his way around Hollinger’s car, but with every move he found his path blocked.

After 23 laps of this nose-to-tail action the flagstand displayed the ‘two-to-go’ flags and disaster struck for Hollinger as the pressure being applied by Russell finally told. With his car getting looser with every passing lap the trip out of turn 2 saw the bone-emblazoned #85 start to slide, and try as he might Hollinger just failed to catch it, spinning out down the back straight for a caution. With such a small field the restart would put Hollinger right behind Russell, but the yellow flags had given him the advantage he had been unable to gain so far in the race. Just two laps barely gave Hollinger a chance to fight back, but to his credit he used the last 8 turns to look for lines back to the lead. Sadly for him this was all in vain as even his last-gasp dive out of turn 4 wasn’t enough to give him his first win of the year, as Russell took another 2010 feature win by a car length, with Jarrett a lap down in 3rd place.

As one David Russell left the track following his post-race photographs another emerged in the shape of #16x David Russell, sitting on the front row for the Super Stock feature race. More regularly seen on the high banks of New Smyrna Speedway, this Russell carried on exactly where his namesake had left off, jetting away into the lead from the start to pass pole-sitter #77 Shannon Kelly and heading off into the distance. The race for 2nd quickly developed as Kelly fought off the charge of #721 John Bennett, but Bennett made short work of his rival and soon headed off after the leader. He would catch Russell with 5 laps remaining and as the remaining laps slowly counted down Bennett would commit to the high groove, but this still didn’t give him the speed he was looking for and the checkered flag confirmed a second feature win on the night for a driver named David Russell.

With the Super Late Models rolling out onto the track the fans were hoping for a repeat of the previous week’s classic between #92 Dick Anderson, #96 Ben Kennedy and #20 Anthony Sergi that had seen them on their feet in the stands as the racing legend beat out the two young guns with a late race charge. This time the signs were good as the group were joined in the field by 2009 track champion #18 Jared Allison, whose all-action driving style almost certainly guaranteed excitement as he clashed with Anderson. In a field of 13 cars the start was a disaster for Kennedy who quickly dropped back in the pack and found himself balked by slower cars as he looked to regain his ground. Anderson was having no such problems as he flew from the 4th row to be looking at 2nd place before a spin for #12 Scott McKinley brought out an early caution.

The race would struggle to find any kind of rhythm as more cautions followed for another spin by McKinley, an couple of spins for Sergi, one assisted in no small part by #7 Vince Keeler, and a coming-together between #55 Todd Allen and #75 Don Keithley that finished Allen’s race and saw Keithley pull into the infield to allow track staff to remove Allen’s hood that was now wedged solidly in Keithley’s bumper and was protruding directly out of the rear of his car. In-between the trips behind the pace truck the race at the front was between Anderson and Allison, who were delivering the excitement as promised with plenty of banging and rubbing as Allison tried every move he knew to make his way past the veteran.

By the time the race hit half distance Anderson was pulling away at the front, leaving Allison to fall back and into a fight with Kennedy, who had patiently worked his way forward and avoided any major trouble. This tussle for 2nd place became enough of a distraction for both drivers to allow Anderson to draw out a big lead. It would take Kennedy several more laps before he was able to slide down inside Allison into turn 1 and grab 2nd spot for himself, and by then there were barely 8 laps remaining for him to make an impression on Anderson’s lead. Slower traffic that needed lapping helped him somewhat and the gap visibly closed over the remaining laps, but ultimately Anderson again had too much speed and track-craft to be caught, coming home as winner several car lengths ahead of Kennedy, with Allison even further back in 3rd place. In the battle for the minor placings the earlier spins cost Sergi dear as his strong run only resulted in 5th place, beaten out by #1 Tom Root for 4th.

The Legends cars were out next and their feature quickly developed into two separate races, with #12 Critter Saile taking the advantage at the front and shooting off without looking back. Pole-sitter #50 Ted Ruffo would hold onto 2nd for the opening laps before an aggressive move by #8 Donovan Ponder sent Ruffo high up the track to allow the young driver through and into a position that he would not give up. Behind the front 3 the race for 4th place between #51x Roger Englund, #6 Jim Rix and #11 Daniel Conlin Sr. was nose to tail and saw plenty of swapping positions right until the 2nd-to-last lap, when Conlin overcooked it in turn 2 and fell away from the others. With Saile leading Ponder and Ruffo home to make up the top 3, Englund won the battle for 4th place by several lengths over Rix.

Early action in the Pro Truck division saw #17 Ken Lilley take advantage of his pole position to move out into a good lead alongside #54 Zach Harris, while #00 Whitney Poole followed on from her great showing the previous week to quickly move up to 3rd spot. Lilley’s run at the front would be ended by a pass from Harris and an aggressive move from Poole to relegate the youngster back to 3rd place before getting stranded up on the high groove of the track and seeing several of his rivals flying past him on the inside.

By the 10th lap the leaders were now hitting the cars at the rear of field, and trouble for multiple drivers in getting past #03 Wayne Skinner would see the first caution flags of the race thrown when contact between Lilley and #21 Scott Reeves as the pair tried to pass Skinner saw Reeves spin out, leading to both he and Lilley being sent to the rear for the restart. Poole would make a great start as the pace truck pulled off the track, but Harris quickly fought back to regain his lead while the luckless Poole found herself caught mid-track as #20 Anthony Sergi and #40 Jessica Green flew past. Contact between the two lady drivers brought this restart to an abrupt end with both sent to the rear, to be joined by Lilley and Reeves who had continued their on-track argument over the earlier caution and were now both minus pieces of bodywork.

The restart would give Sergi his chance to stake a claim for the lead, and both he and Harris began to take laps perfectly side-by side. A similar battle was playing out behind them between Poole and Green before a sharp push to Poole’s door unsettled her truck and allowed Green past and into sole possession of 3rd place. This left Poole to defend her position from Reeves, but the yellow lights would soon be back on as Poole span in turn 3. Sergi would again take control from the restart with Harris in hot pursuit, the lead pair pulling away from Green and Reeves who were now enjoying a nose-to-tail battle of their own.

As the race neared its conclusion the top 4 pulled closer together and it seemed like every driver had a chance to win, but it was Sergi who kept his composure to take the checkered flag by several car lengths over Harris, who in turn had to work hard to keep Green and Reeves in 3rd and 4th places respectively. Lilley would make a late pass on Poole to round out the top 5 positions.

The Sportsman race started in spectacular fashion as pre-race favorite #66 Andy Nicholls rapidly moved into the lead, only for his car to dramatically slow out of turn 4 of the first lap, forcing the driver to pull down off the track and cruise back to the infield with no power. First to capitalize on his misfortune would be #11 Henry Shepherd who suddenly found himself inheriting the lead, but this also meant he was on the receiving end of several hard bumps to his rear from #3 James Frisbie who made his intentions very clear, indicating that he wanted to find a way through. But this was no two-car race as the #44 of Ed Michalak, making only it’s 2nd appearance on the track since being built in the off-season, looked surprisingly comfortable running the high line above the other cars, and he was soon pushing his car’s not-inconsiderable nose in front, forcing Shepherd and Frisbie to move up in an attempt to block his run.

The three cars would run with inches to spare between them for the first half of the race with Shepherd still just in front while Frisbie and Michalak jostled for 2nd right behind him. Michalak would make the high groove his home and would soon be around Frisbie and alongside Shepherd, who responded with a sideways move to bang the #44 hard in its door. This just had the effect of unsettling his own car, forcing Shepherd to ease off the gas and drop back to 3rd as Michalak now found Frisbie underneath him. Another try to take the lead on the high side would see Michalak and Frisbie touch again in turn 3, but this time Frisbie would spin and bring out the pace truck for the first caution of the race. The restart would give Shepherd hope of regaining the lead, but an ill-advised nudge on Michalak span the #44 out over the start line and aborted the attempt at getting back under race conditions.

Once back underway it was Michalak who found himself up on the high line he had favored all race and he wasted no time in pushing past Frisbie and slowly extending his lead over his rivals, never once dropping down the track off the line that had served him so well. By the time the signal for 5 laps remaining was given he had built up a sizeable lead as Frisbie dropped back and was passed by Shepherd.  Finally for Michalak the checkered flag was thrown and he was able to claim his first ever feature win in a race accurately summed-up by Orlando Speedworld announcer Mark Keeler as ‘the best three-car race you’ll ever see’. The driver’s delight on bagging his first victory was obvious as he climbed through his window to take the crowd’s applause, especially in just the 2nd race for his newly constructed car.

The cars of #12 John Zidek and #93 Bruce Gayton had already taken control of the E-Modified race by the time it erupted into life. Two separate cautions saw #00 John Hodge make his way past #6 Mickey Wright and then set his sights on #9 Stuart Lycett, but his hard pass on the low side was too much for Lycett who went high up the track and crashed hard into the outside wall. With the cars lapping slowly behind the pace truck as the clean-up took place Lycett showed his feelings by suddenly roaring across the track and slamming head-on into Hodge’s car and over the top of it. Lycett would head back to the pits on just three wheels with sparks flying from the bare rim hanging from his front right, but he would obviously be pulled from the rest of the race, officials later confirming his instant disqualification.

Hodge would bravely continue in his damaged car as the action started once more but again it was Zidek and Gayton who raced away in the lead, leaving Hodge to battle with Wright and #15 Bruce Packer for the remaining laps. Zidek would develop a large lead over the field as even Gayton dropped back, and would take the checkered flag as the race was completed without further incident. Gayton would lead Wright home in the race for 2nd and 3rd places, as just three cars completed the distance once Hodge had pulled off on the final lap.

The Strictly Stocks ended the night with a small field and a race that saw #51 Wes Railing use his front-row starting position perfectly to run the whole 20 laps at the front, taking the checkered flag well clear of the field. Post race tech would deny him another 2010 win as he would be disqualified, handing the victory to #8 Neil Kirby ahead of #3 Shane Setorus and #8x Luis Guillen Jr., who continues to improve each week.
