Crouse Cruises to Historic East Bay Win

March 26, 2011 – Roger Crouse came close the last time the Gagel’s Auto Parts Open Wheel Modifieds visited East Bay. He watched from second as 2010 division champion Austin Sanders opened the year with a win. On this night, the tables were turned as it was Crouse leading the field home. In picking up the win, Crouse has now scored a feature win at East Bay in every season since 1984, 27 consecutive years.

Crouse praised his crew and pointed out the car was for sale as a new one is being built for him and competitor Mickey Wright. Crouse’s win deadlocks the division points in the early stage since he and Sanders now each possess a first and second.

Kevin Bryant rebounded from an early race spin to claim third in his first 2011 outing. Thomas Pratt, in his first year in the division and Alex Boerner rounded out the top five. Sanders and Bryant claimed heat wins.

The Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Limited Late Models proved to be an interesting race. Three different drivers held the point with Jason Pope first at the helm. Pope lost control of the car while leading, spinning out of the lead and handing it to John Bradley. He kept the top position until a subsequent caution when a fluid leak sent him out of the contest. Tim Gay took over and stretched the lead to more than a straightaway by lap eight. It turned out to be a good thing as Gay’s engine began to give him problems with five laps to go. J.R. Prather Jr. was charging hard but ran out of time as Gay literally coasted across the finish line. By picking up the win, Gay becomes the first driver in 2011 to win features in two divisions. He won the Street stock main on March 12. Prather’s run was good enough for second with Shane Koperda, Waylon Haynes and Forrest Gough (who started last) completing the top five. Pope and Koperda started the night with heat victories.

The Street Stock feature saw heavy attrition as only three cars were running on the lead lap when the checkered flag came out. One of those cars was Jeff Rodgers who had made an earlier visit to the tail after involvement in a spin. Rodgers rallied back and made a pass from third to first on the last restart. James Hook and Billy Carlbert trailed the winner across the line. Last week’s feature winner Jarod Gay spent a lap in the infield and finished fourth, one lap down. Mike Eaton was a lap down, but claimed his first top five of the year. Rodgers and Collin Kruse won their heats.

A field of 36 Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder bombers fought for the 24 starting spots in the A main. Heats were won by Patrick Tabb, Roberto Morfin Sr. and Jacob Vann. Dalton Epps won the B main. In the 15-lap A feature, Morfin Sr. proved to be the class of the field, but he had plenty of company. Patrick Fiore was hounding Morfin to double up his win from last week, but had to settle for second. Don R. Quinn had his best finish of the year with a third. Gene Gross took home fourth with Johnnie Alexander claiming fifth.

Dan Darnell dominated the Old Time Modifieds. Janine Dixon regained the lead on the last lap from husband bill to claim the Dirt Dauber victory.

ASA sanctioned racing returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, April 2, 2011. The program will include Late Models, East Bay Sprints, Street Stocks, Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers, Dirt Daubers and Fan Participation races. For more information, go to www.eastbayracewaypark.com or call the track office.

Tommy Styer and Doug Moff win the 50s at Punta Gorda Speedway

From Linda Jericka

The weather and ten dollars admission made for a perfect combination to bring fans out to the Punta Gorda Speedway for a great night of racing action. The hill in turns three and four is becoming a very popular place for race fans as they packed the place with lawn chairs to settle in for some of the best short track racing in the state. A full night of racing was on tap which included two 50 lap features by the Q Auto Injury Attorney sponsored Open Wheels and PGS Late Models which both had to qualify for position.

The Cowboy Cadillacs were first to take to the track with eight trucks taking the green and it looked like Chuck Sweet was the truck to beat when at the halfway point the 77 of James Dellea over heated and blew water on the track going into turn one. As Dellea brought out the caution and sat sideways in the middle of the turn the hard charging trucks behind him tried to avoid him but the slick track from the water sent Andy Vanscyoc in the 4 truck slamming in too Dellea’s drivers door so hard it knocked the windshield right out of Dellea’s truck. All drivers were OK and James Wright ended up the winner with Les Couch second and Chuck Sweet settled for third after having mechanical problems.

Super Stock class had the lineup posted and ready for their 25 lap feature, when pole sitter Shane Leonard took the challenge to start in the rear of the field and try to win for a $50.00 bonus. Bobby Fischer and Randy Sober took the first and second spot for the first half of the race while Leonard was making his way through the field. Leonard had made his way into the second spot on a restart bringing Jim Mieser with him and shuffling Sober back a few spots. Shane Leonard took over the lead from Fischer with five to go and went on to win the feature and the bonus.

The PGS late Model line up was set and fast Qualifier Tom Styer out of Mirimar would be starting in the fifth starting position with long time track favorite Randy Fox on the pole. Randy “Hondo” Fox out of Lehigh lead the first few laps when he had to pull the black number 4 to the infield as he watched the big wreck happen on the next lap sending 4 more cars to the pits. Steve Gill out of Sarasota would be the only one of the 4 to make it back out with 40 laps still to go. Styer took over the lead from David Weaver on lap 11 while Josh Williams of Port Charlotte was in third. Gill battled his way up to second putting Weaver in third who seemed to be spraying oil all over the windshield of Williams 99 car making it difficult for Williams to see but hung in there to finish the race. Styer went on to win the feature with Hard Charger Steve Gill second Dylan Bigley of Naples ended up third.

Q Auto Injury Attorney is the new sponsor for the Open Wheel Modifieds who would come out next for their 50 lap feature with fast qualifier Doug Moff outside and Shawn Harper on the pole.

Doug Moff took the lead on the first lap with Harper in second as the racing action was fierce behind them for almost the entire caution free race until the “big one” with seven laps to go. It took fifteen minuets to run 43 laps with some of the best racing action of the night till something went wrong on the back stretch which involved the 19 of Steve Arnold and the 71 of L.B. Skaggs which sent Skaggs into the back fence and then back onto the track into the 99 of Sean McLaughlin and cars scattered everywhere.

That caution would bring out a red flag till the safety team announced that all drivers were ok, then track officials realized Skaggs had taken some of the fence down when he bounced off it. Some thought the night would have to be shortened with part of the fence gone but track owner Kevin Williams didn’t want to disappoint the crowd or the Pro 4 class that was in staging waiting for their race. Williams and his track officials, safety crew and the help from the Pro 4 drivers worked on the fence and the fans stuck around till it was announced that the Open Wheels would finish their last seven laps which Doug Moff of Ft Myers would that home the win Robbie Cooper of Bronson FL. Second and Shawn Harper of Lake Wales third.

Upward Sports Ministry was on hand for the exciting racing action and put up $50.00 for a hard charger award which was given to Eric Rudd in the number 12 Open Wheel and the number 5 of Steve Gill in the PGS Late Models.

The pro4 class would finally make it onto the track for their 25 lap feature at 11:00 with still plenty of time before the 11:30 curfew. What a great race to top off a great night with the 14 (4 cylinder) cars running 25 laps with no cautions. Dylan Bigley of Naples made his second trip to the winner circle but this time it was for the winner of the night, after his third place finish in his late model, Phillip Ellis of North Port would be second and Paul Richards Sr. third.

April 2nd racing action will be: Pro Trucks and Rookie Trucks, T.Q. Midgets, Pro 4, Fab 4, Road Warriors, Legend cars and Bandoleros. Front gates open at 5:00pm with racing to start around 6:00.  All that racing for only $10.00 so bring a friend . Admission is $10.00 for Adults $8.00 for seniors Children 12 and under are FREE.

Pollard Wins Thrilling Blizzard Finish As 2011 Season Opens With A Bang At Five Flags

Five Flags Media Feature News

How do you like your racing?

In your face or a methodical and calculated brand of door-to-door battles?

The Super Late Models in the Blizzard Series gave a near-capacity crowd both on opening night at Five Flags Speedway.

Bubba Pollard led just four laps Friday, but they all came down the stretch of the Pepsi Max 100.

As he did to kick off the Blizzard Series season last year, Pollard captured the victory, outlasting Grant Enfinger and Augie Grill.

“We were able to take our time and be patient,” said the Senoia, Ga., driver, who took the lead form Enfinger on Lap 96. “Early in the race, we had some chances, but the door would close. That was OK, though.”

Indeed it was.

Pollard followed Enfinger past Grill following the fourth and final restart with eight laps left Friday.

Two of Five Flags wrinkles to the 2011 season proved extremely entertaining.

The debut of new tire that has a different compound in it allowed the drivers to comfortable run all 100 laps without ever having to worry about wearing out.

Fans also got a chance to see double-file restarts for the first time at Five Flags.

Both Grill, who led the final two restarts, and Mike Garvey, who led the first two, chose the outside lane.

“I was real surprised when those guys picked the outside, but now I know why they did,” Pollard said. “I jumped to the outside on the last few laps and the car just stuck. It was awesome.”

It proved wise early on, but came to bite Grill at the end.

When he tried to get the jump on

“I don’t think the other cars were better than us at the end, I just screwed up on the restart,” said Grill, who led much of the race. “They got by me and I couldn’t get back up. The car was good. I may’ve run it a little too hard.”

Grill racing cars hard? Who would’ve believed it?

It came as no surprise to see Enfinger battling Pollard at the end. The fastest car in qualifying at 16.477 seconds, Enfinger had to start in eighth after a roll of the dice inverted the field.

He bided his time before making his move, leading for Laps 93-95 before Pollard edged to the front.

“We knew we could be patient and pick our time to push the envelope,” Enfinger said. “Everything played perfectly. I thought we had the best car at the end.”

Pensacola’s Johanna Long had a great car, too, for much of Friday.

The reigning Snowball Derby queen and NASCAR trucks rookie driver was running in the top five for most of the race before falling back to 10th.

She watched quite a battled unfold between the top three.

“This was great racing,” Pollard said. “That’s what it’s all about right there. Any three of those cars could’ve won tonight. That’s what the fans come out to see.”

Five Flags never disappoints.

Super Stocks

With the night beginning with a thrilling finish, it seemed only fitting that the night would end with another nail-biter.

Bubba Winslow made a late push on the last two laps to edge Jesse Reid at the line in a photo-finish victory.

“I have to thank my dad,” Winslow said. “He turns wrenches on (the car) like he’s out there driving it.”

Reid led the whole race until Winslow got him at very end.

“It was a good race,” a disheartened Reid said. “The car got a little loose at the end.”

Sportsmen

The more things change, the more they stay the same for Steve Buttrick.

Buttrick posted his 13th victory in the last calendar year dominating the field Friday just like he did all of last year.

The Cantonment driver led every lap. Buttrick briefly was challenged by Brannon Fowler, but did not let that faze him. He pulled away late to win by several car lengths.

Bombers

Pace’s Curtis Faircloth and Jay’s Tally Warrick made it a one-two Santa Rosa County finish.

Warrick passed Johnathan Day on Lap 13 of 20.

It appeared the young Warrick would make a flawless transition from the dirt at Milton’s Southern Raceway to the half-mile asphalt oval of Five Flags.

But, the kid got loose coming out of Turn 4 on Lap 17 and Faircloth pounced. He never looked back.

“That was good hard racing, I guess you could say,” Faircloth said. “We put on a show for these folks.”

Lanigan Outruns Richards For Victory In Friday’s Sunshine 50 At Ocala Speedway

Kentucky Star Remains Undefeated In Two Career World of Outlaws Late Model Series Starts At Florida Track

By Kevin Kovac, WoO LMS P.R. Director

OCALA, FL – March 25, 2011 – Darrell Lanigan has really taken a liking to Ocala Speedway.

The 40-year-old star from Union, Ky., emerged victorious for the second time in as many career starts at the egg-shaped track, capturing Friday night’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Sunshine 50.’

“Our car runs pretty good here,” said the modest Lanigan, who won the national tour’s inaugural event at Ocala almost exactly one year ago. “We definitely like coming to this place.”

Continuing his torrid comeback in the wake of missing last month’s WoO LMS season opener at Volusia Speedway Park due to a medical issue, Lanigan scored his second A-Main triumph in a row to join Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., as the tour’s only victors in four 2011 events. He pocketed $10,675 just six days after earning over $20,000 for winning the ‘Cash Cow 100’ at Columbus (Miss.) Speedway.

Lanigan, who started fifth, steered his self-owned Rocket car into third place by the second lap. The 2008 WoO LMS champion drove underneath Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., for second on lap 13 and made the same move to overtake race-long pacesetter Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., for the lead on lap 18.

The remainder of the distance belonged to Lanigan, who kept Richards at arm’s length and survived a lap-49 caution flag that necessitated a green-white-checkered conclusion.

Richards, who started third, settled for a season-best finish of second in his Rocket mount. He nearly passed Davenport for the lead on lap 12 but skirted high in turns one and two the following circuit, losing the runner-up spot to Lanigan.

Davenport, who started from the pole position, relinquished second to Richards on a lap-18 restart but held on to place third in the Barry Wright house car. Reigning DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., ran among the top five for the entire distance and finished fourth in his Bob Pierce-built machine, and WoO LMS veteran Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., was fifth for his first top-five run of 2011 in his Rocket car.

“The track was a little one-lane tonight, but it was still racy at the beginning and you had to get there (to the front) – and we had the best car to get there,” said Lanigan, who recorded his 21st career win on the WoO LMS since 2004. “I knew I didn’t have too long to get to the front. We got to third quick, and then those two guys (Richards and Lanigan) slipped up a little and we were able to get by ’em.”

Lanigan maintained a half- to full-second edge over Richards throughout the green-flag run stretching from lap 18 to 49. He had just taken the white flag when the race’s third and final caution flag flew after Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., spun out of eighth place in a chain-reaction scramble caused by the slowing car of Seaford, Del.’s Austin Hubbard, who was struck by a flat right-rear tire while holding fifth place.

Richards, 23, was unable to offer a challenge on the ensuing two-lap sprint to the finish. He acknowledged that he had effectively allowed his opportunity to reach Victory Lane for the first time in 2011 slip through his fingers when his bid to unseat Davenport fell short early in the distance.

“When I was up beside of Davenport (on lap 12) he did what he had to do – he got wide and tried to run me out a little,” said Richards, who has won the last two WoO LMS championships. “When we slipped up (in turns one and two), Darrell got by. That was our shot right there. I knew from then on that there wouldn’t be much passing and Darrell was good, so it would be tough to get back by him.

“I took a chance. I probably should’ve waited because Davenport was softer on tires, but you never know. I knew the bottom was getting rubbered up and I knew we had tire at the beginning, so I figured if we were gonna make a move I probably should try it. It didn’t work out this time, but we still had a good car and it was a good night for us.”

Richards vaulted from fifth to second in the WoO LMS points standings with his performance, closing within two points of Moyer, who remained the leader despite tumbling to 20th in the finish. Lanigan, meanwhile, cracked the top 10 for the first time this season, reaching ninth place, 56 points in arrears of Moyer.

Both of the A-Main’s early cautions involved Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, Ga., a crate Late Model standout making his first-ever WoO LMS start. He spun in turn four on lap five as part of a tangle that included Jill George of Cedar Falls, Iowa, who ran a backup car after a B-Main accident forced her to use a provisional to start the headliner, and 2011 Rookie of the Year contender Brian Reese of Sharpsburg, Ga., and the upstart spun again on the backstretch on lap 18.

Rick Eckert of York, Pa., finished sixth and Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., placed seventh despite racing the final two laps with a virtually flat right-rear tire. Ivedent Lloyd Jr. of Ocala, Fla., made his home track fans proud by advancing from the 17th starting spot to finish eighth – and earn the $500 ‘Bonus Bucks’ cash for being the highest-placing driver who hasn’t won a WoO LMS A-Main and isn’t ranked among the top 12 in the points standings – while Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., and Tim McCreadie, whose night went downhill after he fell from second to fifth with two laps remaining in his heat race because he clipped the inside tractor tire in turn two, rounded out the top 10.

Hubbard established a new track record in Ohlins Shocks Time Trials, blazing around the track in 14.873 seconds for his first quick-time honor of 2011. He was one of six drivers in the 28-car field to surpass the former one-lap standard of 15.041 seconds set by Richards on Feb. 13, 2011.

Heat winners were Hubbard, Lanigan and Davenport, and Brent Robinson of Smithfield, Va., topped the B-Main.

The WoO LMS continues its Southeastern tripleheader on Saturday night (March 26) at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga., and Sunday night (March 27) at Needmore Speedway in Norman Park, Ga.

Five Flags Ready For 2011 Opening Race

America’s Favorite Home Track is set for it’s season opener this Friday Night, and we would like to invite you to be a part of it. For the first time in many years, 5 Flags Speedway will drop the inaugural Green Flag for the new season on the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Blizzard Series for Super Late Models, with the running of the Pepsi Max 100. Many of the finest drivers in the region, representing at least 9 states will be on hand. In addition to Friday’s 100 Green Flag Lap extravaganza, the Super Stock, the West Florida Coatings Sportsman, and the Butler’s U Pull It Bomber Divisions will also begin new seasons.

A rematch of the most recent Snowball Derby may very well be in the making Friday Night, as 1st and 2nd place finishers Johanna Long and Donnie Wilson will lead a super strong field of competitors, including recent Rattler 250 Winner Grant Enfinger, 2 time Derby Champ Augie Grill, Georgia hotshoe Bubba Pollard, and last year’s 5 Flags Pro Late Model Champion D.J. VanderLey, making his 5 Flags Super Late Model debut behind the wheel of Eddie Craig’s potent #4. Additionally, Friday Night will mark the return of Pensacola Driver Jeremy Pate, returning after a after a lengthy absence. Last year’s Champ Chase Elliott will be making his NASCAR K & N Series debut this weekend, but plans on returning to the Gulf Coast for Blizzard Series Race # 2 on May 27th.

Randy Thompson will return this week to begin defense of his Super Stock Championship, with Mike Moore, John Schuffler, Bubba Winslow, Shannon Jackson and a host of others out to dethrone the King of Super Stocks.

Thompson himself, and the strongest field ever predicted, of Sportsman Drivers will be on hand to try to stop the long winning streak of Steve Buttrick, last year’s Champion. Buttrick will only be running in the Sportsman Division part time this year, with a part of his schedule being devoted to his new Modified ride. Last year’s Bomber Division Champion Mike Goream will wheel the # 33 on Buttrick’s night off. And speaking of Bomber’s, there is definitely going to be a changing of the guard, with Goream out of the picture.

Inverted starting lineups, double file restarts and a faster running program are just a few of the things awaiting Fans at 5 Flags this year. Additionally on Friday Night, there will be an autograph session for the Super Late Model Drivers prior to the Night’s races. Plan to come early, where at the conclusion of Time Trials, the Fans will be allowed down on the front straightaway to meet and greet their favorite driver. The Steel Drum Band will be providing live music during this part of the activities.

We hope you will like the changes in store for 2011. We think you will. It is our intention to entertain you this year better than ever. Come on out and bring your friends and neighbors. We’re gonna have a blast.
