Choquette Dominates Show at 5 Flags Results

It was a different car for driver Jeff Choquette, but the same result as he won both of the Allen Turner Pro Late Model Twin 50s on Friday night at Five Flags Speedway.

In June, the West Palm Beach driver won both Twin 50s driving a different car.

“It’s a different car, a different chassis, a different motor,” said Choquette. “It’s the second time I’ve raced it and we wanted to see how it would do here.”

It did just fine.

Choquette, returning this season after more than a year hiatus from racing, was the fastest qualifier for the first race and started eighth on the inverted start.

He worked his way to the front, going underneath leader Casey Roderick on lap 36 and taking the lead a half-lap later. Points leader Bret Holmes finished third.

That was the starting order for the second Twin 50s and it turned out to be the same finish.

Choquette led all 50 laps. The only threat was when he came upon some lapped cars, allowing Roderick to close in.

“A few of those lap cars, if they would have just stayed in their lane,” he said. “But Casey kept me really honest. We ran as hard as we could run smart.” (more…)

Wooten and Eunice Shine Brightest in GIS SC5 Runs on August 27!

golden isles logo(August 27, 2016) – The stars may not have littered the sky on a cloud-covered evening. But the stars of the NeSmith Performance Street Stocks shined brightly Saturday evening at Golden Isles Speedway. None was more vivid then Brian Wooten. The B-dub Express topped a stellar field from three states to win the Super Challenge 5 Series 25-lap feature. He led every circuit on the 4/10-mile, red gumbo clay oval.

“Car did pretty good,” Wooten said of his $2,000 win. “Track was a little off this week. I’m not used to the track being this wet. I don’t like it this wet so I have a little homework to do, but it worked out tonight.”

Rain fell during the day three different times leaving a tacky surface throughout the program. That did not stop Wooten shooting from the pole and then opening the advantage again after a handful of restarts. The regular GIS high flyers were in the house as well as the aces from elsewhere. Richie Stephens, Kyle Livingood, Robert Hicks and Ronnie Newsome rounded out the top five. Justin McRee, Woodstock, Ala., jumped into the Dunn Motorsports High Roller Race Cars house car. The Late Model veteran won his heat, but went backwards some in the main and took seventh.

“They are the best of the best,” Wooten added. “Richie has helped me a tremendous amount and to have Justin start beside me and beat him tonight is just unreal.” (more…)

MARTELL GETS SURPRISE WIN IN PRO TRUCKS – WRIGHT ALL THE WAY IN V-8 BOMBERS AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

logoYogi Berra’s famous words “It ain’t over ’til it’s over” rang true Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway after 50 hard laps of Pro Truck racing.

The evening began a bit on the wet side as it took quite awhile to dry the race track following rain showers that drenched the facility from late morning until around 4 pm.  However, with clearing skies looming to the east, promoter Rex Guy waited out the long left-over drizzle and the show went on, although just a bit late getting started.

Qualifying for the two headlining classes was scrapped and starting positions for both the 50-lap Pro Truck race and the 40-lapper for the V-8 Bombers were determined by a pill draw.  For the trucks it was local driver Cody McDuffie using his front row starting spot to zip out to a comfortable lead at the drop of the green while Michael Goddard, Cody Martell, Becca Monopoli and Danny Anderson settled into some nose-to-tail racing behind him.  Monopoli became the first driver to make a move as she passed Martell for third on lap ten.  From there it was green flag racing as the trucks became spread out all over the speedway with McDuffie putting laps on a number of drivers before the first caution flag came out on lap 35 as it appeared second-running Goddard got into one of the lapped machines with the result a whole bunch of torn off sheet metal on the right side of his racer. Steele Crushes Field in Larry Brazil Memorial

david steeleBradenton, FL – On a night that the Southern Sprint Car Shootout Series presented by BG Products and TrueFuel honored one of Florida’s late sprint car racing legends, it seemed fitting that another legend would finish the night on top of the podium. Dave Steele, a two-time Little 500 champion who has several championships on his resume, rocketed from the back of the field and crushed the competition on his way to a victory in Saturday night’s Larry Brazil Memorial at Desoto Speedway.

After winning the first heat race of the evening, Steele took the BG Challenge and started at the rear of the 17-car field. He passed 11 cars in the first three laps, passed Johnny Gilbertson for third on the sixth lap and just passed Troy DeCaire for the second spot when the red flag flew for a hard crash by Jeff Firestine just prior to the halfway point. Steele blasted by Jason Kimball on the restart and immediately set sail from the rest of the field. Not even the lapped traffic would slow down Steele, who was clocking laps in the 108 MPH range in the final half of the race. He would beat DeCaire by nearly half a lap at the checkered flag.

“This is a great honor,” Steele said in victory lane. “Larry Brazil was definitely a hero of mine on the local scene growing up here. It’s tough outrunning these guys.” (more…)

Dutilly Paints Another Masterpiece at Desoto

jesseScott Lookwood – When the Sunoco Challenge Super Series Late Models last raced at Desoto Speedway earlier this summer, Bradenton’s Jesse Dutilly led the final 89 laps of the 100-lap main event on his way to a victory. He one-upped that feat in Saturday night’s return engagement, rocketing up from his fourth starting spot and leading the final 90 laps on his way to another victory against the largest Late Model field of the season on his home track.

Dutilly and early leader George Gorham were battling for the lead when a caution flew for a spin involving Michael Atwell and Billy Bigley just seven laps into the event. On the restart. Dutilly and Gorham spent a couple of laps battling side-by-side for the lead after the restart. Dutilly led at the line at lap 10, cleared Gorham on a lap later and set sail from the rest of the field. Gorham, Winchell, Chris Fontaine and Devin McLeod staged a tight battle for the top five spots while Dutilly built up a three-second lead over the next 40 laps.

As Dutilly continued pulling away, Gorham settled comfortably in second half while Winchell, Fontaine and McLeod continued their fight toward the front of the pack. Anthony Sergi and Nick Neri were also in a position battle, with Sergi coming out with sixth place just prior to the halfway point. (more…)

Gibson, Bass take victories at Desoto Speedway

sean bassSCOTT LOCKWOOD – Kenny Gibson and Sean Bass outlasted the competition – and the sweltering heat – to take victories in the main events on an action-packed night at Desoto Speedway on Saturday.

Gibson and Jeff Firestine, who set the third and fastest times in qualifying respectively, started 10th and 12th in the 21-car field after a 12-car inversion. The pair wasted no time charging to the front of the field and were both in the top five by the time the caution flew for Joe Gerard’s fire on lap seven. After a rash of caution flags and a restart on lap 17, Firestine went from fifth to first by passing Gibson and then with a dramatic three-wide pass of early leader Travis Barfield and Mike Rowland. He was pulling away from the field when a debris caution flew on lap 24.

James Nanney used a series of cautions and restarts to work his way up to second place. He spent several laps on Firestine’s rear bumper before losing a little ground to the leader. Firestine was starting to catch the back of the field when a rear tire flew off Danny Daniels’ car right in front of the leaders to bring out another caution. Nanney was in position to challenge Firestine for the lead in the final laps before nearly spinning off turn four. Nanney’s misfortune moved Gibson up to second behind Firestine, who crossed the line first for an apparent victory. However, Firestine’s car failed post-race technical inspection, which handed the victory to Gibson – his first win of the season in the Street Stocks. (more…)
