Volusia Speedway Park Set to Open Weekly Racing
John Allen Takes Over as Weekly Operations Promoter for the 2017 Season
CONCORD, N.C. – February 3, 2017 – DIRTcar Racing announced today that John Allen has taken over as the Weekly Operations Promoter at Volusia Speedway Park in advance of the 2017 season. Weekly racing will commence on March 12 and run through the first week of December.
Allen, a 45-year-old DeLeon Springs, Florida resident, is no stranger to Volusia Speedway Park, having spent many nights at the track with his father, who was a security guard at the track in the 1970s. Over the last three season, Allen had sponsored the track with his successful business, Allen Plumbing.
Allen has many aspirations with the speedway, including rebuilding the track’s prominence in Central Florida and putting fans back in the seats.
The DeLeon Spring speedway is a half-mile, clay oval, often referred to as the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile.” Though its name, size and style have changed throughout the years, it has consistently operated as a weekly race track.
“For me, the Speedway is my joy – to bring all these drivers and fans together,” said John Allen. “A lot of people come out of the wood-work to help out, which is huge. We try to help out the local community and just bring everyone together. I get joy out of giving people somewhere to go on a Saturday night.” (more…)

By SCOTT LOCKWOOD, Desoto Speedway – Brooke Storer and Roger Welch knew heading into Saturday night’s 50-lap Sportsman feature that whoever finished in front of the other would claim the track’s 2016 championship and get a jump on their competiiton for the new season. While no one had an answer for Aaron Williamson, Welch held the early advantage – but it was Storer who walked away with the big trophy at the end of Saturday night’s action at Desoto Speedway. Welch grabbed the lead at the green flag with James Wright and Brooke Storer in tow. A fire erupted from the back of Rick Reed’s car after just two laps, which brought out a brief red flag. Storer got by Wright for second and wasted no time getting to Welch’s rear bumper. Storer took the lead after slight contact with Welch on lap 8 and was joined at the front of the field by Aaron Williamson just before Wright spun to bring out another caution a couple of laps later. Williamson used the high line on the restart to get the lead from Storer and set sail from the rest of the field. He went unchallenged the rest of the way on his way to the victory. Storer claimed the 2016 Sportsman championship with her second place finish. “I can’t thank my team enough. It was an amazing 2016 season,” Storer said. “We had a lot of help and I thank my family for standing by me through our racing endeavors.” Cody Allen, Welch and Tom Zimmerman rounded out the top five.
Week number two of Auburndale Speedway’s Winter Sunday racing series saw much warmer weather than on the opening Sunday last week and plenty of great racing action as it was “DARN Day at the Races” with fans getting the opportunity to support DARN that helps raise awareness of farming and agriculture to the youth in Central Florida through various programs along with supporting local school’s FFA and 4-H programs. It was such a warm day that several fans came up with a new month for Florida – “Januly.”
