Ray Cook Wins 9th Annual Chevrolet Performance World Championship Race

cookVLbrp112313 (640x427)OCALA, FL – Driving a car he named “Johnny Cash,” Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC started 19th and won the 9th Annual Chevrolet Performance World Championship Race for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series in front of a packed house on Saturday night at Bubba Raceway Park.

Cook had the right set up and the driving experience on a hard slick track, as he took the lead on 43 and never looked back to claim the $10,000 top prize in the Horsepower By Hedrick Special.

“Howard Stalls asked me to drive for him in this race at the beginning of the season, and they’ve been building it since then, like that old Johnny Cash song “One Piece At A Time” and tonight it made some cash too,” Cook said. “We had trouble last night in qualifying, and had to come through the B-Main to make the race, but we had the right set up with tires and shocks to get us to the front.”

Once the car was finished, the Stalls crew installed a brand new Chevrolet Performance 604 Engine right out of the crate they bought at NeSmith Chevrolet in Claxton, GA for $5,195, so they paid for the engine in its first night on the race track. (more…)

Florida State Championship Races Hit Bubba Raceway Park

1115-16-2013Jim Rouse – With just each division’s respective Championship race left on the table (at least for points) there will be four champions crowned this Saturday and a further four on December 21st in the second half of the Florida State Championship races. This week’s task, however, is the Scorpion Racing Products UMP DirtCar Open-Wheel Modifieds, Bubba Army Limited Sprints, Limited Late Models, and 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks.
The Limited Sprints will tackle a fifth race with seven drivers mathematically alive in the fight. Otto Scrape leads Robbie Smith by a slim ten point margin and “The Hammer” Danny Martin, Jr. is just one point behind Smith. AJ Maddox, believe it or not, is the top driver in the standings with a victory in the Limited Sprints (Martin won in the 360’s) but sits 28 markers out of the championship lead. A further two back is Terry Withersppon, 55 back is “The Peruvian Outlaw” Mark Ruel, Jr. (who has claimed three checkered flags but only has one trophy), and Gene Machuga sits 56 back. Last year’s division champion Matt Kurtz also claimed the inaugural Florida State Championship ring last season but will make his return this week after an injury kept him sidelined for a couple of months. Kurtz will be in a new ride; Martin, Tyler Godwin, and many others have comfort in their machines as they chase a ring and $1500. (more…)

“What A Way To Win It”

IMG_4443Jim Rouse, Ocala, FL- The Bubba Army Late Models, Bubba Army Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, TQ Late Models, and Florida Mini Sprints all put on fantastic shows to wrap up the non-special event season at Bubba Raceway Park.
Hobby Stocks kicked off the night with Wally Schneider jumping to the lead from the pole. Mike Stalnaker would take his chance at Schneider and lead for a few laps before giving way to Schneider and Devin Walker. On lap fifteen Schneider and Stalnaker would go at it in turn two and Stalnaker would take the divebomb and loop Schneider. Schneider would be given the lead back and Stalnaker was dropped to the tail. With three to go Schneider would cut the right front and leave Walker, Dennis Williams, and Tom Burnside to fight for the win. Devin Walker would take home the win on his mother’s birthday with Dennis Williams, Tom Burnside, Joey Forsyth, and Dave Arivett the top five.  (more…)

Try It Once More

11092013Ocala, FL- Five divisions head to Bubba Raceway Park for the final race of the season that doesn’t hand out rings and checks with extra ‘”0’s” and three of the five have drivers with championship clinching scenarios. Rich Pratt, Brandon Elwood, and Nick Snyder can all wrap up their respective championships- Late Models, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and Florida Mini Sprints- while the TQ Late Models and Hobby Stocks shoot for glory as well.
Rich Pratt has a commanding 80 point lead over 11-year old Tyler Clem in the Late Models, but he has yet to return to Coors Light Winner’s Circle. Pratt has had a solid year but wants that win; Clem has been impressive and wouldn’t mind grabbing a victory either. Bryan Bernhardt sits third but has Mark Whitener, three race winner, and Kyle Bronson, the top candidate in the Nesmith Touring Series Rookie of the Year chase, are barreling down on him. It’s going to be a great finish to one of the best seasons in Late Model history at Bubba Raceway Park. (more…)

It’s going to be a great finish to one of the best seasons in Late Model history at Bubba Raceway Park.

The Scorpion Racing Products UMP Modifieds have had a wild season as well and it’s Charlie O’Neill a top the board. Sitting just three- yes, after all of that racing, THREE- points back is Rich Pratt and a further five back is Jeff Mathews. As those three try to break away, Scott Kurtzner will try to stay with them and close the 22 point gap he has to O’Neill. Bryan Bernhardt seeks his first career Modified win and a top five championship position with it. (more…)

Spooktacular Action At Bubba Raceway Park

IMG_0666-MOcala, FL- The Limited Sprints, Hobby Stocks, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, TQ Late Models, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators all took to the track with a spooky theme on board the property.
Hobby Stocks opened up the show with Mike Stalnaker the leader as Eric Moon chasing him until Moon’s rocketship stalled out on lap four. At the halfway point the caution would fly for the stopped car of Cory Hupp; Stalnaker would have to fend off Jon Layerd and Trey Cameron, III for the lead. Stalnaker would hold on for his third win of 2013 as Trey Cameron, III and Rebecca Paugh took career best finishes with second and third, respectively. Charles Cantley and Cory Hupp completed the top five.
TQ Late Models would attack the track next and ten-year old Austin Strosahl would lead lap one. John Hopke would steal the lead on lap two and proceed to pull away from the pack. After a few cautions Dave Rader would jump to the lead and leave John Hopke in his tire tracks. As Terry Wright fought for the lead with Rader, Wright spun the #007 machine around and had to go back to the tail. Dave Rader would win a shortened event to keep the division with no repeat winners. John Hopke would end up second over Austin Strosahl, Sean Babcock, and Kevin McKenzie. (more…)

PJ Wiggins Memorial A Success At Bubba Raceway Park

IMG_3529Jim Rouse, Ocala, FL – The Scorpion Racing Products UMP DirtCar Modifieds, Bubba Army Late Models, Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators all fought for cash and glory as they honored a great racer in Florida in PJ Wiggins.
Limited Late Models were up first and would start with Shane Koperda up front. Tyler Clem would make quick work and had the lead by lap two. A lap eight caution for a Ricky Land spin set up Clem, Forrest Gough, and Koperda up front and Gough made quick work of the eleven year old. Lapped traffic would begin to play it’s hand, but Gough managed it and held the gap over Richard Ferry and Clem as the 25-lapper progressed. Gough would hold on to grab his first win at Bubba Raceway Park over Ferry, Clem, Koperda, and Ricky Land.
The Hobby Stocks saw Scotty Kay, Jr. lead the opening stint which included a wreck between Devin Walker, Chuck Cessna, and Heath Walker that saw the latter two retire. Eric Moon would rocket past Kay on lap ten and pull away, even through a couple of cautions for solo spins. As Moon entered turns three and four, the lapped car of John Florkowski would be present and Moon slipped and spun into the infield. Scotty Kay, Jr. was nearly two seconds back, but would pass the idle car of Moon and claim his first career win at Bubba Raceway Park and he buried the nickname of “Perennial Bridesmaid.” (more…)

PJ Wiggins Memorial Brings The Best To Town

REW-BubbaRP-9-14_2745 copyOcala, FL- The PJ Wiggins Memorial will be run for the third time as we honor a fallen driver in the Modified ranks of Florida. PJ won his final race at Bubba Raceway Park in June of 2011 before he passed away just a few months later. Bubba had no question on what the first memorial race he would create would be and “One Last One For PJ Wiggins” was born. Rich Pratt defeated NASCAR star David Reutimann in a 40-lap thriller, and last year Kyle Bronson swept both nights of the two-night affair with Reutimann the runner-up on Saturday. While Pratt and Bronson look for their second “PJ Wiggins Memorial” victory, drivers like Jeff Mathews, Ronnie Chance, and Scott Kurtzner will try to take their first win in an event for a man who was loved and respected by all. Others, such as Bryan Bernhardt, Hunter Gustafson, and Paul Snyder will attempt to just make it into their first race. There is a raffle for a 32″ TV (generously donated by BendinRulesEmporium.com) with all proceeds going to PJ’s wife and his children. Who will leave their name in the history books as a winner of the PJ Wiggins Memorial at Bubba Raceway Park?

The main event is, of course, our $3000 to win Scorpion Racing Products UMP DirtCar Open-Wheel Modifieds feature. The Bubba Army Late Models will battle for $2000 and many drivers will most likely pull double duty (Bronson, Mathews, Late Model points leader Pratt, Bernhardt, and more) and chase a $5000 prize. The Limited Late Models have $1000 on the line and young Tyler Clem will fight to hold on to his points lead and grab the second largest payday of his young career. Hobby Stocks will race for $600 and no one has points to worry about as Devin Walker has wrapped up the division title early. (more…)
